Abayagiriya Stupa The second largest of the stupas in Sri Lanka, Abhayagiri Stupa has been built by King Vattagamini alias Valagamba (89-77 BC). This extends up to an extent of nearly 200 hectares. According Bhikkhu Fa-hsein who visited Sri Lanka in the fifth century there had been three thousand resident bhikkhus in the Mahavihara and five thousand bhikkhus in the Abhayagiri. The development of Abhayagiri reached its peak in the reign of King Mahasen and was the centre of Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhist buildings found in the environs of Abhayagri indicate that this complex had been an important educational institution both locally and internationally.

චතුරස්‍රාකාර ස්තූපය - අභයගිරිය විහාර සංකීර්ණය අභයගිරි විහාර සංකීර්ණයට අයත්, එහෙත් අප්‍රකට මෙම අසාමාන්‍ය ස්තූපය පිහිටා ඇත්තේ ඇත් පොකුණට නැගෙනහිරින් වූ උස් බිමේ ය. මෙය අතීත මහනෙත්පා මූලයට අයත් වූ ප්‍රදේශයයි. ලංකාවේ අතලොස්සක් වන මෙවැනි ස්තූප, තායිලන්තය, බුරුමය වැනි මහායාන බුදුදහම ප්‍රචලිත වූ රටවල් වල සුලභ වේ. අතීත ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බුදු දහම කෙරෙහි වූ මහායාන බලපෑම මැනවින් විදහා දක්වන්නක් ලෙස මෙම ස්තූපය දැක්විය හැකිය. Square Sthupa - Abhayagiriya Monastery This extraordinary Sthupa is situated in the eastern side of the Ath Pokuna of the Abhayagiriya Monastery. The premises where this situated belongs to the 'Mahanathpa Mula' of ancient Abhayagiriya school. It is very rare in Sri Lanka these kinds of Sthupas, but in countries like Thailand, Burma where Mahayana Buddhism is abundant, these types of Sthupas or Pagodas are very popular. Therefore, this creation depicts the Mahayana influence to the Sri Lankan Buddhism in ancient times.

තායිලන්තය වැනි අග්නිදිග ආසියානු රට වල දක්නට ලැබෙන ගෘහ නිර්මාණ ශිල්පයට අනුකූල, මහායාන බෞද්ධ ස්තූප වල ලක්ෂණ සහිත මෙම ස්තූපය වේදිකාවක් මත ගොඩනගා ඇත. එහි පාදම පිරමීඩයක මෙන් හතරැස් වන අතර, ඇතුළතට ගමන් කළ හැකි පරිදි සාදා ඇත. ක්‍රි. ව. 7-9 සියවස් වලට අයත් මහායාන මන්ත්‍ර ලියූ ඊයම් ඵලකයක් මෙහි නිදන්කොට තිබී හමුව ඇත. අභයගිරි විහාරයේ මහායාන හැදෑරීම් හා පුදපූජා වලට තිබූ නිදහස හා ආභාෂයට කදිම නිදසුනකි.
