What happened to this place. Let me just start by saying that the food itself was pretty delicious. However, that's about the only good thing I experienced. We had a reservation for 10 as soon as they opened and we waited 10 minutes for them to get set up. There was no other customers. We then waited another 15 mins be served for them to take our order. Meanwhile, another family came after us and were served first. After our server took our order, we waited close to 30-40 minutes to get our food, while the other large family of 8-10 got their food before us even though they arrived after we us. I also forgot to mention that the whole place was leaking and had random buckets on the ground to catch the water. The walls were also filthy, all roughed up needing a new coat of paint. The whole experience was just bad, luckily when the food came out, it was still pretty good. I do hope they get some more help and renovate the place.

WOW! We have just fallen in love. My husband and I ordered takeout and were blown away by the food. The star of the show goes to Char Kway Teow - so smoky, so balanced, so easy to enjoy. This is a must try if you haven’t had it already! Next time, we’ll order two of the Char Kway Teow, cuz it is far too delicious to share and you’ll want leftovers! Second runner(s) up: A tie between the Tom Yum Noodle soup & the Penang Har Mee soup. Both were so flavorful, packed with veggies and seafood and each with a unique flavor profile that can only come from a kitchen that lovingly invests time into their own authentic broths. The Tom Yum Noodle soup is also different from that which you might expect at a Thai restaurant- this one has more of a fresh tomato base that is rich and light at the same time. The Penang Har Mee is more similar to a Jambong (Korean soup) with a smoky flavor but a deep crab broth base. Spicy, so it will catch you at the back of your throat, but so worth it! Nasi Lamak - I haven’t had this dish as much, so I can’t really judge. My Korean husband loved it, and my favorite part (we only sampled cuz it was too much food to eat a lot) is the fried anchovies- so perfectly crispy and salty!!! We will definitely be back!! Highly recommend.

Halal chicken & lamb, authentic flavors and some dishes I've never had stateside! Would come back to try other things on the menu. Roti canai and nasi lemak were favorites among what we tried, char kway teow was also good. Mee goreng was ok.

As a fellow Malaysian, I am disappointed. First, the food is not authentic. None of the curry dishes had curry flavor. They simply use chili oil to make it spicy and use it for all their curry dish. Yes they are spicy but not curry spicy. I did not get the Malaysian feel at all. Nasi Lemak ... it looked good but the sauce they used was "sad." They are trying to use the sauce to cover the fact that the fried chicken was not seasoned and over cooked. The dried fish also had no taste. Again, if you have ever been to Malaysia, you know it is not authentic. Worst of all, they lost the Malaysians' hospitality. Even if I complained about the food, they refused to do anything. In contrast, the owner would keep words in my mouth and accused me this and that. I have informed two different servers that the curry was too spicy for my friend's to eat. The server simply informed me that they pre made the curry, nothing they could do. But at the end, the owner accused me lying and put the blame on me. I am ok to pay for the food I do not like. But I have an issue of being accused as a liar if I have done all I could. I will never go back to this restaurant as I do not like the food. Most importantly, I will not give them a second chance to hurt my dignity, I deserve respect.

I have passed this place for ten years and after trying to eat at two sushi places that were closed for some reason, we finally ended up here. I liked the layout and the decor. The food however, ... was awesome 😉. I found something new that I had never heard of, beef Rendang. I loved it. My wife and son had a great Pad Thai and a good sized bowl of wonton soup with some spring rolls. I will not drive by again with getting my rendang fix.

Great food and excellent service. Waitress was very helpful and answered our questions and made excellent recommendations. We ordered 4 dishes and it fed us 4 quite well. Definitely recommend the Malaysian dishes and not the generic Asian foods. The Malaysian foods really shine here. The aesthetics and atmosphere is decent but it's nothing really memorable but the food is what makes this place very memorable. The amount of food you get from the dishes is good. Not super generous but good enough to fill up your stomach without getting bloated. Overall, I would recommend this place if you want to try something different.

Wait is long but totally worth the wait. The food was great. The crispy noodles was such a welcomed new dish for me. I totally recommend it, also really generous portion size. Nasi Lemak was just as delicious. Beef rendang is always a hit. Overall great experience.

I've passed this place for probably 10 years now coming to Arlington Heights. We finally got around to trying it. Ordered the Mi Goreng and the Nasi Lemak. Both dishes were super flavorful and not too spicy. Definitely recommend. There appeared to be other dishes we wish to try next time we come back.

What a gem to find, we went on a Monday afternoon and we were blown away by the quality and taste of the food. The chef/owner came out to talk to us while we ate and was very friendly and was a blast to chat with. We ordered the Assam laksa, char Kway teow, and half a duck. The Laksa was deliciously sour and the half duck was outstanding! This was a highlight of a small trip through Chicago and we couldn’t recommend it more!

Surprisingly good restaurant. Decent prices, nice decors, and tasty food. The only comment I have is the portions were quite less compared to other restaurants with the same price range.

I really enjoy the food here at Penang Malaysian. I’ve been coming here for years to the Arlington Heights, IL location since they relocated from downtown Chinatown Chicago. Like a lot of businesses post Covid, staffing is short and service takes longer, but it’s worth it. Annie is often serving when I am there. She’s a lovely and sweet woman who is at times overwhelmed as she is doing everything. If you check in and ask her how she’s doing, you’ll get a surprisingly big smile. Food here is rather unique and a lighter alternative to Chinese and although very flavorful not as spicy as Thai food. Tonight I had the Roti Telur with chicken (murtabak). It comes with a delicious curry dipping sauce. A signature item along with the gado gado salad. This salad is so tasty and yet pretty healthy. Shredded jicama is covered with lightly wok seared string beans and potatoes with fried tofu, egg and cucumbers covered in a light flavorful peanut sauce. I also tried the Tom Yum chicken soup, which was super flavorful and had a nice kick. I was quite pleased. If you haven’t had Malaysian food get out and treat yourself. If you haven’t been in a while, visit again, knowing you’re supporting a wonderfully unique dining experience here in the northwest suburbs.

I had a mixed experience at this restaurant. The food was good and the portions were decent. The server was rude and I didn't really feel welcomed there. We went for dinner close to the closing time, so probably she might have had a long tiring day. The menu was more pan-Asian than authentic Malaysian.

Ordered to share between 2 people and the amount was just right! My friend recommended trying these dishes and they were really good :,) the roti canal (not pictured) was a nice appetizer too. I also recommend trying the dessert~ it was not too sweet and was delicious

The service was definitely not the best. The final receipt came with the tip included which is unusual. The food was great. We really liked it. The menu looks more like Pan-asian and not purely Malaysian. Definitely must try for the food, but not for the overall dining experience.

If you have time, stop in. They have been low staffed each time, but if you are patient, the food is WORTH IT! During this visit, the waitress/hostess was swamped and thanked us profusely for our patience, but she remembered everything and was very thorough. We will definitely be back!

Average service, seating area was ok. Portions were good with reasonable price . Hainanese chicken was cook perfectly and tender. Beef loMein was good , beef was tender , I love the vegetables comes with the LoMein. Chicken and shrimp with Tofu dish was mild flavor, it goes perfectly together . 4 stars for the foods.

This place far exceeded my expectations. The food was amazing, and service was quick. Everything we ordered looked and tasted great. Prices were about on par with other similar restaurants - it's not cheap but I wouldn't call it expensive either.

I am not from Malaysia, so I could not tell if it is authentic or not. Overall, the food was tasty but did not surprise us at any point, the portion sizes were appropriate. The server was friendly and nice.
