If you are in Panama you must include on your bucket list a visit to the Panama Canal which is completely managed and maintained by the Panamanian government. The third canal which is now open allows super sized vessels to pass through the 100 kilometers of canal. Try something different and ride the Panama canal railway back to the city and kick back and watch the world(well maybe trees) go by.

I really enjoyed my trip through the Panama Canal. Having been through the Suez canal last year I found it much more interesting, with all the wild life, shipping & of course the famous locks with their mules just keeping the ship in the middle of the lock. We were lucky to have an ex Panama Canal pilot on board who gave us a detailed account of the canal & all its workings.

Miraflores Locks was a great place to hang out and learn about the Panama Canal. Sadly, the museum was mostly closed, so you do have to do some research on your own. On the too floor, a person with a microphone explained what we were looking at in the locks. Plan to spend the whole afternoon there because ships move slowly through the locks.

Great history, and well organized. Kind staff- awesome to get to see not one but 2 ships go through! I know some times there is not much traffic but that day was a busy one :). Please allow yourself a lot of time because if boats go through it's easy to miss out on the history if you're on a timeline.

The movie was great and very informative. The canal itself is pretty cool but you only see the "small" boats cause it's the old canal. A lot of people in the afternoon. I recommend the morning so you can see the boats going up which is more impressive than going down.

Great experience to see the Panama Canal and importance as one of the modern marvels of the world. After watching the movie, it's best to go around 2 pm since most ships pass around that time. Recommend calling ahead to see how many ships plan to make the pass so can see it first hand.

A great museum and even greater viewing experience of the great Panamanian locks. My mom and I got to take lots of cool photos and rush downstairs in time to watch the ships carried through the lock right in front of us. So much history and so many experiences collected into one place. Life wouldn't be the same if Panama did not provide for the world its services. Incredible.

The visitor centre was an excellent view point. We were lucky to watch two different ships passing through the locks into the Pacific ocean. One lock chamber usually drains in 8 minutes and then the doors open for another 1 or 2 minutes. There was a load speaker explaining what is happening in both English and Spanish languages.

Absolutely incredible experience to see especially if you get to witness ships sailing through as well! Definitely worth seeing, even if you don't get to see a ship. Can't visit Panamá without going! Pretty easy to get to from Albrook mall, 810 bus stops right outside the entrance inside the complex. The best time for this is around 15:00. The museum is OK, not a lot of information and most of the exhibits were not on show due to work being carried out. The restaurant was also closed. (August 2022).

The 3D movie was fantastic. It's a documentary of about 45 min explaining how the locks work. The view area is great too. The narrator was fantastic, funny and informative. Loved the experience!! Much better than the new locks Agua Clara!!

Excellent experience. Whenever I had a visitor made it a point to take them there. I used to spend hours watching the ships pass by, the staff working round the clock to ensure the ships pass through without a glitch and the and enthralled faces of visitors who are experiencing it for the first time. Love the feeling and felt the same when I was first there. Must visit place when in panama .

Such a cool thing to visit. Try to go there when there's boats coming in. I believe they inform that or any vessel tracker system can provide you that info. It's much better of they re doing the canal thing!!

The Miraflores Locks allow you to view the passage of vessels through the Panama Canal and is a must see if you ever visit Panama. There is a 45 minutes movie shown in 3D narrated by Morgan Freeman which gives the history, construction and expansion of the Canal. The cinema is equipped with the usual surround sound and is very state of the art. There is also a cafe, bar and lounge to wait to see the movie or to view the vessels. Vessels pass through in the morning (7:30am) and also the afternoon (2pm or after). We got there at 12:30pm; waited for the movie and then saw a vessel pass through at 3:15. The only complaint is the bundling of folks at the bleachers taking pics or videos and on the day we visited it rained. All in all 3 hours well spent which costs USD17.22 at the time of our visit. Definitely recommended!

The experience of watching the ships go through the canal was amazing. Unfortunately it was super crowded. You expect a place like this with such amount of people visiting each day to improve the space. Be awere it's super hot and there's no shadow.

The panama canal, a piece of human engineering, is fantastic to see how the gates get flooded and they open to get the boats thru the next section. Definitely on the bucket list. The IMAX presentation was in 3D, it was about the construction history of the canal. Visitors are invited to see how the boats are maneuvered thru the canal gates.

Truly a wonderful experience. The IMAX movie will educate you about the marvels of engineering it took to build the Panama Canal, and the inadvertent medical science discoveries that occurred as a result of the endeavor (GO USA 🇺🇸). Seeing the locks in action will impress anyone and it is a great way to spend the afternoon.

Crowded on a Thursday afternoon, but still worth seeing. We actually saw the first ships to pass through the locks that day. The Imax movie is a bit pricey, but worth it. This truly is one of mankind's greatest engineering feats.

Visiting the canal was more interesting than I was expecting it to be! They announce every ship going through, including sharing information about it. You can stand so close to the ships that you can talk to the people on them! The movie is amazing. I really enjoyed my visit!

Amazing experience watching an engineering marvel operate in front of our eyes. The visitor center was understandably crowded - but it is great to see major interest in how this operates. These massive locks, located in the Miraflores section of the canal, play a crucial role in facilitating the passage of ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Towering steel gates, operated hydraulically, control the flow of water, allowing vessels to be raised or lowered to match the elevation of the next section of the canal. Completed in 1913 as part of the canal's original construction, the Miraflores Gates represent a marvel of early 20th-century engineering and remain a vital component of one of the world's most important maritime routes. Beyond their functional significance, they also serve as a symbol of human ambition and determination to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles in the pursuit of global connectivity and trade efficiency.

Sailed down the Panama Canal as an excursion from our cruise ship. It was a brilliant experience and to think that it was manmade too was just amazing. The view of sailing under the Bridge of Americas was spectacular. Loved the view of Panama City from the Pacific Ocean too. Highly recommend.

Last week was my first time at the Canal, I wish I had more information. I enjoyed the whole thing, but it could have been better. I watched the movie, etc. I didn't know there were better spots to watch the ships going through the Canal, if I'd known this I'd skipped the movie and get a spot at the 2nd level of the building and maybe watch the movie later. If you go with kids [it is hot there and a lot of people] you know your kids better than anyone else, just prepare if they're between 1 and 7 yo.

If not for this man made Canal all the ships need to go around South America to go to Far East or Europe. Though it was handed over to Panama by USA it is professionally maintained by Panama and very efficient pilots.

(Translated by Google) In this place the work of the locks in the Panama Canal is appreciated. There the gates are closed and filled with water to raise or lower the level of the boats as if it were an elevator and continue the journey inside the canal. Since the channel does not have the same height throughout its route and boats must go up or down to advance within the channel. (Original) En este lugar se aprecia el trabajo de las esclusas en el canal de Panamá. Neat to see the locks, and the museum is extensive. I thought the price was outrageous, especially as no ships were going through at the time of or visit, so we spent $20 to look at empty, unmoving locks.

It's a nice place to see the Canal however, the water system is active only 2 a day. There is a ship around 11am and 3pm. If you miss the time there isn't much to see. I strongly recommend that you go there at the time there is a ship passing. Otherwise you may be disappointed that there are no ship considering you pay $15 for the entrance.

Friendly staff and informs you of when the next ship is going through. You only have a hour on the viewing deck. If deck is full it is hard to view the ship. Wish they would add a row of seats to view then people standing behind can also see the ships and canal. The exhibition is great to look at and read while walking to the forth floor viewing deck.

Well I know I should give it 5 stars but I am not that much into the Lock. I mean it's nice to have seen it once in a lifetime...but nothing special to me. The history of it is very sad any many, many people died building it.

Well worth the visit. An easy trip from Panama City, it is a must during a visit to Panama. Be sure to check on when the ship go through the locks. It didn't start until 1pm on our weekday. Also use the online reservation to get ahead in line. You don't actually pay until you get to the front of the line but this will save you standing in line to buy a ticket. The exhibits are closed but the show is the ships moving through the locks. The observation deck on the 4th floor is a great view with a bilingual speaker. Also go down to 1st floor observation deck to see the ships up close.

Witnessing two container ships, one big and one "super", transiting the locks was far more interesting than I anticipated. A great experience. My guide had an app on his mobile phone showing ships entering and transiting the locks so we arrived in perfect time to see the transits. You definitely want to time your visit well.

Approximately half the viewing area was open, which meant the area was overcrowded. It was difficult to get a good view of the locks until several hundred people had left. Watching the ships pass through is certainly something to see. Unfortunately the IMAX theatre was closed, limiting the amount of information available on how the locks and canal worked. The are toilets as you reach the first floor but they were not marked.

So fascinating! So interesting to see this world-famous marvel. A guide shares info over PA system as you watch the ships. Kind of crowded at the observatory, but the ground floor had plenty of room (and you can still see everything). There is no observatory for the new set of locks for larger ships. The movie after was well worth it! Very good production. Entertaining and informative.

Interesting to have seen. The canals look deceptively narrow but two huge ships passed while I was there. It was pretty crowded, a long queue but it moved pretty quickly. They also have an IMAX theatre with a feature narrated by Morgan Freeman although I didn’t see that. Apparently locks don’t operate between 11am & 2pm so take that into account.

So fascinating & interesting to see the canals. It takes a long time to go through. A guide shares info over PA system as you watch the ships and going through the locks. Kind of crowded at the observatory and mostly everywhere (and you can still see everything). A once in a lifetime thing to see.

Awesome and unique experience. I do recommend checking the boat schedule before you go. We got there at 11 and they told us there were no boats until 3pm. So we watched the movie (10/10) and then left to eat somewhere else, then came back at 3pm to see the boats. Once you scan your ticket to go on the dock, you can't go back in again, so they're nice enough to warn you that there are no boats at the time before you scan it, in case you want to wait until you can see boats. You can go in and stay as as long as you like.

Yes there are currently renovations, yes there are some marks on the IMAX screen, yes the 2, 3 and 4 level viewing platforms are closed. And this will be better when those are all fixed. However, for less than $20 to see the canal working to guides commenting on the specific vessels is a must do if you are in Panama. If you can time it for a cruise ship that is really cool. Check the transit times. Usually ships cross early in the morning and then again after 2pm. Also getting a marine traffic app is also cool (there is at least one good free one) to see details on the vessel and which ones are coming next.

Absolutely amazing experience passing through lockss. I went from the Pacific Ocean side to the Atlantic ocean side. The mules that are pictured do not actually pull the ship through. They are there to keep it centered so ship does not grind up against the wall. We were in the older, smaller channel, which locks fill up within about eight or 10 minutes.

A few things to know when you go. You buy tickets to go through. There is a 3D imax theater that shows a documentary about the history of the Panama Canal and then the area where you can see the locks. The staff told us what time a ship was scheduled to pass through so we could see it. If you can, try and find a schedule for when a ship will be passing. When we got there there was a listing for times for the movie and the ship crossing. We didn't know this and just showed up and ended up having to kill a few hours waiting around until it was time to see the ship. It gets pretty crowded so go in early so that you have a spot to stand for a good vantage point or you will be stuck behind lots of people and their cameras and won't get a good view. The other two amenities are a gift shop and cafe where you can buy drinks and snacks.

Must visit while in Panama city. This is an interesting engineering concept with rich history on transport by sea travel. The centre is easy to reach by taxi and there is a movie that explains the history of the Canal in a simple way.

Loved my visit. Wasn't expecting guides to be narrating what was happening, so that was really nice. The guy who started narrating was funny and spoke very clear in Spanish and English, and was funny. The girl who took over when the boat was through the 1st lock spoke much softer, so was difficult to hear and understand. Arrived around 8:40 and was told we just missed the first boat crossing and the next boat crossing would be around 9:30. There was a movie showing at 8:45 but by the time we got our tickets we decided to see it after. A lot of the staff kept telling everyone to watch the movie right then, even when it was already 8:50 and we might've missed the first 5 minutes. We went to the locks and read the information panels, then claimed a front row spot on the viewing platform at 9am. When the announcer said the boat was approaching, suddenly the platform was packed. So definitely claim your spot early if you want an unobstructed view! They also only had 2 boats in the morning that day, so people arriving after 10:30am would've had to wait until 2pm for the next one crossing the other way. So best to get there early! The movie was nice, but I think would've been better in 2D. The 3D was too fuzzy for me. Popcorn was good!

Great to experience in person the trafication of the Vessels trough the Canal of Panama. The 45 minutes 3D movie narated by Morgan Freeman gifs a good explanation of the history untill the present situation of The Canal de Panama.

Very interesting place: the film is very educative and all the structure is gorgeous. There are 3 stores inside. it's also importat to say the ships use to cross the channel until 8:am and after 1pm. So, try to get there early.

The locks are amazing to see especially when there are boats coming through. There is also an informative movie in English with Spanish subtitles. However there is not much to see when there isn’t a boat and the timing was not well communicated. I recommend calling in advance to see what time the boats will come through. If possible see the film first but leave at least 30 min between the end of the film and when the boats arrive so you can get a good spot. It is very hard to see from the ground level so move to a raised area. It is also hard to see from the seats in the observation deck because people stand in front of you. The best spot is standing by the railing in front of the observation deck but you have to get there early because it crowds out quickly. You can’t go back to the locks once you have existed so make sure to bring food with you if needed. Also the boats are scheduled but don’t always arrive on time so be prepared to wait.

Really cool toll both for boats to pass through. So cool to watch a boat go through the locks. They have 3 floors but only 1 is open so gets a bit over crowded. Rumor has it that it cost about 400k to cut the line and go first by now with the major back ups and water shortages is close to 2MM some people may call this a bribe. Others call it business

It's an understatement to say that if you only have a quick stopover you MUST come and visit this place and learn about it's history. Make sure you can make time to watch the IMAX 3D movie.

This is a very informative and underrated tour location. There is a 3D video, narrated by Morgan Freeman which precedes the viewing of ships traversing the locks of Miraflores. The viewing points are crowded so be sure to sit close the exits of the theater to ensure being one of the first to arrive at the view point.

  • 5/5 Dilpreet J. 7 months ago on Google
Incredible. It's $18 and well worth it, it includes a 3D film narrated by Morgan Freeman explaining the entire history of it. There are descriptive annotations everywhere to explain how the 50mile canal works. The most ingenious human creation and more like being in a museum but you also get to see it in action!!! Take your camera and watch the huge ships flow through with less than a meter of space. Also the exclusive bus takes you to/from albrook but only once per hour, the taxis are a rip off

Seeing the canal operate was a wonder in itself. I sat for hours watching the ships enter the locks. The IMax movie was very informative. I learned so much about the building of the canal, the vessels that pass through, and its importance. I'm glad I came to Miraflores as I was hesitant in the beginning.

The Museum of the Engineering Wonder of the Panama Canal. Tourists may purchase a ticket to the Imax movie for $7.22 and a $10 ticket to the balcony overlooking the 2 ship docks. It is recommended to arrive at the end of the film immediately to be in the front row and watch what is happening. Each step sounds for about 10 minutes and there are 3 steps that a ship has to go through. In the movie you can buy popcorn, drinks, coffee, wine and more. The observation of the ships is in the direction of the sunset and therefore it may be dazzling and hot during the sunset hours.

Cool to see! You can pay about $20USD to watch a 15 minute film about the canal but it’s not mandatory. You’re still able to see the canal & where ships go through without having to pay the fee, just need to drive around the corner a bit. A must see part of history!

These are truly an engineering marvel you must see. We enjoyed the movie before which gave us some history and then we went outside to see a ship go through the locks. In the distance, you can see the new canal with the larger ships.

  • 3/5 Ajet R. 5 months ago on Google
It is true that Panama is famous for the canal, but I believe that there are many other things to see than this. It's usually crowded, hot, the whole process takes more than an hour... not worth it.

The Miraflores Lock is a must-visit when in Panama! Watching massive ships navigate through this engineering marvel is a fascinating experience. I'd recommend checking online for information about the ships scheduled to pass through the locks as sometimes they may need to wait due to weather or other circumstances. Buying tickets in advance is a smart move to ensure a convenient trip. Additionally, the IMAX movie at the visitor center is a fantastic way to learn about the history and construction of the Panama Canal in 3D. It adds an extra layer of insight to your visit. Don't miss it!

Going to see the Locks was an amazing experience! It's incredible the sheer size of these ships!! The 2 people who were narrating the experience were very knowledgeable! When one of the freighters was going by, I caught a glimpse of a woman on the ship which I'm sure is a male-dominated field. Super encouraging! Girl Power!!

You use to be able to see at least part of this without spending the $40 to get in. They are changing to much more of a Disney feel. Pay pots of money, get herded into the movie, get herded through the gift shop, get herded along the proper walkway to the locks, then back thru the gift shop. If you want to get a little more up close to the actual locks, and are there to spend money, fill your boots. If you want to see the ships and the operations, save yourself the cash and drive up the road a bit, there are several areas to park and see the locks and the boats.

Paying for the full experience is nice if you have no knowledge about the damn at all. The movie was very informative and has some great shots of the damn being built and of the lake that was created. Seeing the lock was cool however there is no set time for the arrival of the boats and to watch the locks in action, so when I was there I did not see them in use(sad face). The weather is humid and hot but there is a covered area you can use to wait if you wanted to but as there is no scheduled time that will be entirely up to you. I did this little trip without a tour and there were tours there around the same time so even the tours don't know when the boats will arrive. Paid for an Uber and then to get inside and watch the movie and see the locks. Really wasn't all that bad price wise. Definitely put this on your list of things to see. Enjoy and I wish you better luck than I had.

The movie telling the history of the canal is very well produced and informative, very recommended. The visit to the locks is very well explained by a guide, also entertaining although it's mainly in Spanish but I guess it depends, the guy reads the room. The only thing I would change is the capacity, since everyone wants to be by the edge of the balcony there is virtually no place to be. A third level doesn't sound crazy.

Very affordable and a seem-less flow since there is staff there to direct each transition. The narrator during our visit was very funny and informative. The imax is a great film and precursor before going to see the actual Canal.
