I
visited
the National
Archaeological
Museum
of
Athens last
week
and
I
was
amazed
by
the
richness
and
diversity
of
its
collections. It
is
the largest
archaeological
museum
in
Greece and
one
of
the most
important
museums
in
the
world devoted
to
ancient
Greek
art. It
houses
some
of
the most
important
artifacts from
a
variety
of
archaeological
locations
around
Greece
from
prehistory
to
late
antiquity
The
museum
is
located
in
a
beautiful
neo-classical
building
that
was
completed
in
1889.
The
building
itself
is
a
work
of
art,
with
a
grand
façade
and
a
lovely
garden
decorated
with
sculptures.
The
museum
has
11
galleries,
each
dedicated
to
a
different
period
or
theme
of
Greek
history
and
culture.
Some
of
the
highlights
include
the Antikythera
mechanism,
the Mask
of
Agamemnon,
the Bronze
statue
of
Zeus
or
Poseidon,
the Jockey
of
Artemision,
and
the frescoes
from
Akrotiri.
The
museum
also
has
an
impressive
collection
of
inscriptions,
pottery,
jewelry,
coins,
and
other
objects
that
illustrate
the
daily
life,
religion,
trade,
and
politics
of
ancient
Greece.
The
museum
is
very
well-organized
and
informative,
with
labels,
maps,
and
audio
guides
available
in
different
languages.
The
staff
is
friendly
and
helpful,
and
there
is
a
café
and
a
gift
shop
on
site.
I
spent
about
four
hours
in
the
museum,
but
I
could
have
easily
spent
more.
There
is
so
much
to
see
and
learn
that
it
is
impossible
to
cover
everything
in
one
visit.
I
highly
recommend
this
museum
to
anyone
who
is
interested
in
ancient
Greek
civilization
and
art.
It
is
a
must-see
attraction
in
Athens
and
a
treasure
trove
of
cultural
heritage.
