This was quite a beautiful museum. It costs €12 per adult, students under 25yrs are €5. It took us about 4 hours to work through the whole two story building. It has so many beautiful statues, weapons, vases and jewelry going all the way back to 3000 BC.

Amazing collection of artifacts. However about 30% or so of the museum was roped off with some fantastic collections I wanted to see. When I asked different staff members they said it was because they didn’t hire enough staff to be in those sections. So you pay full price for entry, no warnings, and can’t see over a third of the collection. This was on a Saturday. Not great.

Wow. If there is one thing to do in Athens besides visiting the Acropolis, it is this museum. This is filled with tons of rare artifacts and knowledge about the entire history of Greece. You can see beautiful statues starting from Ancient Greek all the way up to the Roman period. They have an incredible display of items that easily should take you several hours to review in full. I also highly suggest going to their cafe at the end for some excellent coffee.

A great collection of tools and artifacts from all over Greece, this museum is absolutely impressive. There was almost no queue this time of year, and the entrance fee of 6 euros is reasonable for the amount of work and artefacts we see. I was told that Greece has more archaeological museums than any other country, and this museum is perfect one of the best amongst museums in Greece. Centrally located, and it was great to spend the whole morning here. Highly recommended.

I just had a short visit intend to return soon then will give a update. Visit was fantastic no bags allow inside. No problem they have a holding cell for it😁. Don't leave your phone you need it to take photos. I really enjoyed it and was surprised by the volume of the little I've see.

Be prepared for a thorough security check at the entrance, which delays the queue, especially on a Sunday visit which is more crowded. After that, smooth transition into multiple rooms... Remarkable exhibits, unique Hellenic history, well maintained facilities, amazing ticket prices. An excellent choice for an educational family outing.

World class. What a mindbendingly fascinating museum. A highlight of Athens and good value. I had 2.5 hours to see it and it was only just enough. The range of things to see is incredible: Bronze Age, Mycenaean, Minoan, Roman, Egyptian periods, and more. There were so many objects there older than 3,500 years, it’s astounding. A lot of it is in fine condition. This was my second-favourite museum in Greece after Acropolis Museum. There is a bathroom and a cafeteria downstairs along with some gardens. It’s unlikely you will be allowed to bring a bag in, but there is free storage and the staff were lovely about it.

(Translated by Google) It is the largest museum in Greece and one of the most important in the world. His collections, with more than 11,000 exhibits, present the ancient Greek culture from the beginning of prehistory to the end of the Roman period in Greece. The building where the museum is housed was designed by the architects Ludwig Lange and Panagiotis Kalkos, while it was edited by Ernest Ziller. Its construction was completed in 1889.

This is, by far, the best museum I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. It has an impressive entrance, it's the perfect size she the top floor is staggering. The juxtaposition of the Parthenon on the hill while you look at the marbles is one I'll never forget. It's very clear, standing in front of the gaps in the museum, that the marbles should be in Athens, not London. Make sure you have a Greek coffee at the museum, it's sublime.

One of most important spots in Athens! I would recommend to spend half of the day here. Very interesting collection and so much things to explore. The museum's garden cafe are also nice place to chill / take a break from walking. The coffee and bakery are nothing special but the garden is very lovely - worth to visit.

A good, simple archaeology museum in the centre of Athens. The layout is straightforward to navigate. The descriptions to the exhibits are well-written in English and Greek. There is also historical information about the different eras, which was very helpful for better insight into the Hellenic culture.

Great museum with plenty of Ancient Greek artifacts. Visit the cafeteria on the lower level to see the beautiful garden. I spent 3 hours there without a tour guide or audio tour but you could easily spend more or less depending on your interests. To things to see are: Tombs of the Kerameikos, The Horse and Jockey, The Mask of Agamemnon and the The Antikythera Mechanism. Cost 12€ to enter.

Great experience you cannot miss when being in Athens !!! Understanding better the Greek ancient culture and how it influenced the region and the world. Several master pieces shows how the culture started here and how people understood the natural phenomenon and convert them Into believing and then into mythology. Also it is reviled how the mythological creatures really are, for example that sirens (Meermaid) are really closer to a half human half bird rather than fish. Vessels, sculptures, small trinkets, etc. transports you to an ancient culture that shaped the modern world. A must go place in Athens for sure !!!

Amazing Museum, you can easily spend 3-4hrs on it. The ticket is around 6$ to 12$ . They allow you to take pictures and everyone is very welcoming inside. The exhibition is well preserved, some parts have better lighting than others. I recommend going early so you’re able to see it all. Loved the Egyptian Collection

Filled with things from before you were born! Unfortunately many of the rooms were closed, such as anything Egyptian. Still it was a good way to stay out of the rain on a gloomy January day.

(Translated by Google) The treasures of the country are there. The National Archaeological Museum is the oldest museum in Greece and one of the most important in the world. Its foundation in 1829 is intertwined with the liberation of the country and the creation of the Modern Greek State, signaling the state's concern for the protection of cultural heritage. The current Museum building was designed by L. Lange, modified from the façade by E. Ziller, and opened its gates to the public in 1881. Its role was to promote antiquities as a fixed reference point for a newly formed state. and at the same time protect them from constant kidnappings and looting. Soon the museum, enriched with antiquities from all over the Greek world took the form of the central one. After the completion of its re-exhibition, a work that began in 2002 and ended in 2009, presents in a more complete and comprehensive way a panorama of ancient Greek culture from prehistory to Roman times. His permanent exhibitions also include antiquities from Cyprus and Egypt.

Absolutely wonderful museum. Definitely up there with the world's best and a must see in Athens. Go at opening time and have the lives of ancient Greece displayed for just your own enjoyment. The golden mask of Agamemnon is just one of many treasures here. The second floor has an awful lot of pottery, wonderful if you are into them but otherwise move swiftly through to get back to the statues and sculptures downstairs. However do not miss the fascinating Thera/Santorini exhibit there Make sure you go the cafe as there is even great works on the wall here, the Medusa mosaic is particularly good.

Good peak into the history of ancient Greek civilization through their exhibits and artifacts. If you have only time to visit one museum in Athens and you want to get a glimpse into ancient history of all the different civilizations then this is the museum you should visit. You can check out the notable highlights in a couple of hours. The plaques are not very informative though, so better to take an audio guide or a guided tour.

We quite enjoyed our stay here. We came as a family and already had our tickets booked. We also had an audio tour guide booked trough get your Guide. That worked quite good and we were able to spent a nice afternoon looking at the expositions. The museum is quite big and is lovely organized. The small garden was quite lovely as well.

This was a great museum. The flow was amazing. It casually directed you through the entire museum with arrows on the ground. The staff here is incredibly helpful and ready to answer questions to their ability. I would recommend going on your own without a guide because the group sizes were very large and seemed to take away from the amazing pieces of history. I'd highly recommend visiting this museum and stopping by the cafe downstairs. It has a lovely atmosphere and some historical artifacts within it.

Great museum! MUST GO! Only €6 and you get your money's worth. I went twice while in Athens. The museum is filled with many ancient artifacts and can take someone a while if they are particularly interested. Must see exhibits include the Antikythera computer, the Greek moon rocks, statue of Perseus, and the unidentified statue of Zeus-Poseidon. The garden in the lower level is also quite beautiful.

I would definitely recommend going to the museum. It had many interesting displays of artifacts that have been found throughout ancient Greece. The flow of the museum itself is somewhat choppy and nothing that was interactive and they had a ton of the same types of displays. Overall, I would have gone again. Just a side note, there is a courtyard near the bathrooms but it was almost unbearable with smoke from the smokers and the bathrooms were not the nicest or cleanest.

A museum that you absolutely have to visit in Athens. Full of history and great accomplishments of the ancient Greek civilization. It feels a bit unreal at times, how advanced ancient Greeks were and their amazing understanding of the universe, math and science. My only complaint is that the museum seems to be understaffed and some sections were closed for the public. It is such a pity honestly! None the less, it's a must visit for sure!

A great journey to history.we learned a lot. A great place in hot summer days. It is a big museum with multiple exhibitions. We enjoyed this place with young boys 5-7 who were amazed by the size of statues and details. A nice coffee shop outside and inside. It was a smart choice to go there.

We went 6 of September and outside was big line but we wait maybe 10 min tops to get inside and buy the ticket (12 euros 💶). It has 2 floors and in the basement you can find cafeteria(you can enter also from 2 floor and enjoy the view of very pretty cute small garden where people sit, talk and enjoy their food and coffee ☕️) and gift store 🏬 Museum itself very nice but not big so I think you will spend 2 hours tops there! All well organized and clean :) outside you can find small park with lots of green parrots 🦜:))))

We went to this museum and we loved it. There’s lots of works, different rooms and everything is properly explained. The installations are correct, even though the exposition route can be a little difficult to follow. However, if you are looking forward to learn about both art and handicraft in different ancient periods, I would recommend it a hundred percent!

One of the better museums I've been to. Buy your ticket online to avoid the long lines. I was impressed with how large it was. They had many eras throughout the complex. Just when I thought I was done I walked into the Egyptian exhibit. It was also really nice to relax inside with ac on a hot day.

This place was inspiring both as an archeologist and an artist. Some rooms are more compelling than others, but you can see world famous artifacts each after another in every one of them. If you only visit a couple of museums in Athens, I would recommend putting this on your list. Otherwise, its a bit like every other archaeological museum, so if that's not your thing, visiting this one won't change that.

Pretty huge museum full of various artefacts from local antic era. I was there during summer 2020, so it was probably a slightly less awesome experience than what it usually could be - logically you had to wear a mask and museum employees had to count everytime how many people are in one room (I think max was around 8 people at once) so if there were more in the advanced room, you had to wait. Sometimes we got stuck like this for a few minutes. Exposition was great, but if you are not a much of a history fan, I guess most of it can look the same to you (lots of vases and lots of statues). For example my girlfriend was kinda bored after like one hour. Also beware, that during such pandemic times you can't just go anywhere you please - you have to follow an exact route, however in the end of this route it looks like you should head for exit already, yet there is a room full of interesting excavation stuff without any route to it (you have to ask and then they have to let you in). I wonder if we did not missed any more rooms this way. Also apparently you should not be permitted to take pictures, but everyone around was doing it so yeah I took a few as well. PS. EU citizens under age 25 have a free entry

The museum is not as new and modern as Acropolis Museum, but definitely got tons of collections. And, it is not prohibited to take picture, so it's very nice. If you are a university student or member of scientific institution, better bring your ID card. It's 50% ticket reduction for non EU member, and it's free entry for EU member. Don't forget to put your bulky bags with the staff. It's for free and will spare you some hassle while enjoying the history.

Give pride of place to statues and other pediments, stone is omnipresent. The room reserved for gold and Mycenae is exceptional. The staff are a little on the teeth, probably due to the fact that we went there one evening of August 15th free and open to all. This isn't my favorite type of museum to visit, I normally prefer art museums. I am aware that a lot of the antiquities "Elgin marbles" are in England. There wasn't the same wow effect you get when you enter the Louvre or Metropolitan Museum in New York. There was an extremely large collection of vases and small artifacts. I initially enjoyed the gold pieces until I saw the top layer peeling, so now I'm not sure if I was looking at gold plating. Majority of the statues were broken or missinIg pieces. That may be because they were so old. I recommend visiting the museum. There were so cool pieces, and definitely important to get some history of Athens, Greece. Also had a nice lunch after the museum. Very reasonable prices.

For disabled (and their caretaker if the disability is over 80%) and students up to 25 years the entrace is free. After explaining that in my country we have levels of disability, not percent they allow me to also take the caretaker for free, no problems here with that. As in every museum during covid times you have to show covid certificate to enter the building. The museum itself is HUGE and you definitely will be tired. However, there are many interesting, beautiful and different things inside and most of them are very nicely described. In the down area there is a restaurant/café in kind of park or just among green. Its one of the main places in Greece and not only, yet it doesnt cost fortune, recommend!

Great museum showcasing the history of Greek antiquity. The exhibition progresses from Ancient mycenaean ages through to the Roman period. Some amazing highlights of the exhibition in the pictures below - personal favourite was the mask of Agamemnon. Tips: - Rick Stevens does a great 1 hour highlight audio tour on his app - worth it! - few bay checkin if - like us - you are doing it on your last day in Athens and have already checked out of your hotel.

This museum is an absolute must see when visiting Athens. Just know, it has a ton in there to see and read..... I'd highly recommend planning an entire day here so that you can read everything. Also, the informational signs are in both Greek and English which was super cool.

It’s a MUST. Definitely worth to pay the ticket. It was €12. Unbelievable the amount of material that you can find. It also has an Egyptian area that has so many interesting things such as mommies, papyrus, etc. Also a computer dated from BC and moon rocks brought by Apollo 11.

This is a must see place for all antique Greece tourists. Recommend. The museum is rather large but yellow arrows on the floor really helped us to see everything in order. There is also a nice café in a beautiful ancient Greek style garden. Lot of magnificent statues. The building is air-conditioned with very pleasant atmosphere. People of 25 years and below have a free entry.

The museum is extensive and provides detailed explanations in English that will add to your appreciation of other historical sites in Greece. I also enjoyed the Egyptian exhibit. I would recommend going with a guide or asking for an audio guide, because the size of the museum can be overwhelming.

We are a disabled family so accessibility is a big deal to us. We were able to get in via the wheelchair ramp on the left side of the building as you are facing it and it landed us right inside the exhibits. The drawback to that is if you have a bag with water and other necessities, you have to be escorted back through the entire museum to the front door to drop your bag outside at the cloak room, which is free. The day we went the museum was free due to a holiday, and this led to massive lines, so prepare for that if you are visiting on a holiday. Also, several exhibits inside the museum were closed, including the Terra Cotta warriors, which was a huge disappointment, but they have to rotate inventory and build new exhibits sometime. We did enjoy the Mechanism exhibit, though the mechanism itself is stored at the now closed National Library, so you can't see it, but there are several excellent models of it and it remains a baffling enigma worth studying. We were also surprised that only Greek historical characters specific to Athens and the Parthenon excavation were featured. They had nothing on Archimedes, but then it IS called the National Archaeological Museum, and as far as I know, there have never been Archaeological finds surrounding Archimedes. The bookstore has sparse but affordable trinkets and books for purchase, and some much more expensive replicas of finds for as much as $6600 Euro. The cafe has a good selection of snacks and is inside the Museum. There is another cafe at the street entrance in front of the Museum, but that was not a good experience for us.

One of the best museums i’ve ever visited! A must see for those who love archeology, ancient greek and/or art. Such and impressive collection of mainly statues! This museum offers you a trip trough the history of Greece, having pieces from every time period. It really shows the progression of art trough the ages and how the Greeks ended up with their iconic style. When in Athens make sure to visit!

An amazing experience. We had visited many of the archaeological sites where these items came from so it brought to life the richness of past civilizations. The treasures from the burial sites is particularly impressive. We had a guided tour but we need to go back to spend time to really study the wealth of culture in this fabulous museum.

I paid 6€ off peak (winter) to visit. Rich history, just a pity that there is no audio guide yet. But there is sufficient written info to not be completely lost. The cafe in front of the museum is a lovely place too :)

No crowd on a weekday morning at 9am. Find out how to view the collection in chronological order, it will make more sense! Various rooms closed at time of visit in April. Restful cafe in very pleasant garden with goldfish, nice for a refresh after viewing the exhibition. Highly recommended to sum up Greek history. Best to visit sites first, then see artefacts to make more sense of what you are seeming.

Very interesting museum if you're a history buff out researching the financial history of different societies. It will give you a better understanding of why things are the way they are now. Entrance staff is a bit brisk but the space is gorgeous and well organized so it's worth overlooking any attitude. The visit was suggested to me by my Athens guide and her dog Kuzya. I wasn't disappointed.

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value. There are numerous objects not to be found anywhere else in the world.

Far more dated building and exhibits when compared to the Acropolis museum. We were told to hurry up while looking through the displays as there were people outside lined up, despite the fact we had been in the room for no more than 5 minutes. The area the museum is in isn't particularly pleasant, we were quite eager to get out of there after finishing up inside.

Visited this museum last week. Due to Coronavirus government restrictions, there was a terribly long queue and we had to wait a long time to get in. Moreover, you can only follow a specific path once you're inside, and there is a time limit for each exhibition (again, government restrictions). There were a lot of gold items which I would have loved to have seen better, if I had more time. The exhibitions are interesting but we loved the inner garden the most. It would be worth a second visit to see what we missed.

This museum was one of the best I visited in Athens. The statues on display really tell the story of the progression of Western art and beauty. Beginning with statues that could easily be mistaken as Egyptian or Babylonian, you can see the change to a distinctly Greek form of sculpture. The bronze of the javelin thrower is simply stunning. I was also surprised to see the Antikythera mechanism on display here! I did not know this is where it is kept. My only complaint is that because of COVID there is a route planned out that was not as clear as it could be. We ended up missing the courtyard and possibly a room or two. There are also several rooms that are blocked off, notably the advertised exhibit based around Hadrian and the Roman period of Greek history. Still, this is well worth the visit and I would like to return when the restrictions are lifted.

Our admission was €6 and €12. The woman at the window asked our age and my partner since she was still 25 got the 6 euro price and me being 26 I got the 12 euro price. I originally thought admission was 6 for everyone so yeah that slightly bothered me. Pretty cool museum but I wasn’t overly impressed by anything. They have an exhibit completely made for a statue head of Zeus which tends to be the largest of all head structures made within the museum. Interesting artifacts, but the captions weren’t that appealing to make me ponder of the mysteries of these findings. Nonetheless it’s cool to spend the day walking around and taking pictures, we came during a rainy day so it was fine. Don’t forget to come back to the center area to see the last of the museum before you leave.

The only downside is that working hours are not accurate on either Google or website, nor staff cares enough to let you know in advance that working hours are different than usual... Ended up being asked to leave 2.5 hours before stated closing time due to national protest.Highly recommend, just perhaps confirm opening hours before buying tickets on the day.

Houses artifacts from all over Greece not just the Acropolis... Sit and ponder if the bronze statue pulled from the sea is Zeus throwing his lost thunder bolt or Posiden wielding his missing trident. Reveal in the realistic features of the Bronze jockey boys face .. is it fear, surprise or shock... Read about the influences that other cultures had on Greeks.. such as Egypt, Mesopotamia and Phoenicians... Plan on spending about 3.5 to 4 hours wondering the museum that is structured in such a way that you miss very little and learn more than you realize. Hours depend on day and if tourist season or not. Nov to April is not tourist season so crowds are few and prices are half of what they are in May through Oct. Well worth 4 hours..

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is dedicated to ancient Greek art. Greek culture, Greek art basically the Greek history. It fascinating and artefacts from the Greek mythology are the museum’s magnet. The kids will have fun spotting the mythological kings, creatures, gods and goddesses. It is a cultural visit not to miss out for a non Greek.

  • 3/5 Anthony T. 1 year ago on Google
The museum itself is well organized and nice. The collection seems redundant at some point and many of the rooms were closed (apparently due to lack of staff). It’s unfortunate because some of the rooms that seemed nicest were inaccessible - specifically, both the Egyptian collection and the Gold collection were closed off. Some of the pieces could also use a better description.

  • 3/5 Lance Y. 1 year ago on Google
The museum definitely has some valuable Greek antiquity collections. However, it should do a better job at introducing the history and context. The text next to the collections is very lean and dry. I have been to many museums on Ancient Greek civilization, such as the one in Istanbul and the Louvre. They did a much better job in telling stories instead of just exhibiting items.

Very interesting museum. Much ancient historical artifacts even predating the Greeks. Much about Cyclades and micenyans. There is also a small section about Egypt. People younger than 25 enter for free.

Great place...first you may want to visit Mycenas...they have a free service to keep your backpack. Cafeteria is great and not expensive . First floor for me is the most.important. No audioguide..it is a pity such a museum is not providing audioguide they say COVID..which is nonsense as all museums in the world are providing...I assume it is a business with private tourist guide who charge incredible amount of money

Very comprehensive collection of artifacts ranging many periods of ancient/Classical Greek history, from many different areas of Greece. Highly recommend to anyone with a strong interest in history and/or mythology. For those of us (myself included) who may be less up-to-speed on history and mythology, this museum is still worth going to!! For instance, you may start to connect the dots to other archeological sites you’ve visited and gain a better understanding. Or you may just enjoy art and looking at the forms of the pottery and the patterns in the gold and jewelry :) At this museum, you’ll find lots of pottery/ceramics, marble statues, and gold artifacts. All are in excellent condition!

Beautiful collection of art you've seen in art history textbooks. We spent about 4 hours there, but we read a lot of the signs... A little difficult travelling with a disabled companion because the elevator is located far inside and the restrooms are on a lower floor.... That said, the staff was very helpful and gracious and wheelchair was freely available. Perfect ending to our trip to Athens.

Amazing displays of ancient vases, jewellery etc. Almost a bit too overwhelming. We were lucky to skip the line, because we had a baby with us, otherwise we would have had to wait quite a while in line. I therefore recommend going earlier and not in the late afternoon.

A decent museum with a great range of figurines, pottery and statues through the ages. I was a little disappointed that many sections were roped off without notice, but there was still a lot to see. I found it beneficial to download the completely free audio tour by Rick Steves, which was super helpful and informative.

No trip to Greece is complete without this museum. This museum is worth every penny of the entrance fee. It is well lighted, chronologically laid out with plaques that explained what you were looking at. Lots of statues and armor and pottery of different eras. There was so much to look and all so interesting at this museum that you would need several hours. You will not be bored!

I visited the National Archaeological Museum of Athens last week and I was amazed by the richness and diversity of its collections. It is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. It houses some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity The museum is located in a beautiful neo-classical building that was completed in 1889. The building itself is a work of art, with a grand façade and a lovely garden decorated with sculptures. The museum has 11 galleries, each dedicated to a different period or theme of Greek history and culture. Some of the highlights include the Antikythera mechanism, the Mask of Agamemnon, the Bronze statue of Zeus or Poseidon, the Jockey of Artemision, and the frescoes from Akrotiri. The museum also has an impressive collection of inscriptions, pottery, jewelry, coins, and other objects that illustrate the daily life, religion, trade, and politics of ancient Greece. The museum is very well-organized and informative, with labels, maps, and audio guides available in different languages. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there is a café and a gift shop on site. I spent about four hours in the museum, but I could have easily spent more. There is so much to see and learn that it is impossible to cover everything in one visit. I highly recommend this museum to anyone who is interested in ancient Greek civilization and art. It is a must-see attraction in Athens and a treasure trove of cultural heritage.

While it's a little difficult to follow the layout, it's a great way to spend a hot summer afternoon in Athens. Some great pieces in the museum, including the antikythera mechanism (It looks a little different than the Indiana Jones version! 😀)! Side note: PURCHASE YOUR TICKET ONLINE BEFORE YOU GO! We did, thankfully, and avoided the LONG line.

This is a museum worth visiting. It has multiple collections and exhibits. Lots of interesting sculptures and pieces of ancient art in various forms. Plenty of vases with Greek motifs, pieces of jewelry, coins, full recovered statues, and many other historical objects. Highly recommend to anyone interested in ancient history and those who are curious about finding out about ancient civilizations.

Beautiful museum describing Greek history from the prehistoric time throughout the Ellenic era and more. Nice collection of vases and statues.

Great experience if your into ancient history. Don't take any backpacks or large bags. They have to be checked at the door. You can pick them up after your done in the museum.

Interesting museum with lots of cool artifacts and iconic statues! Bag was taken and held at the free coat check but we could keep water with us (definitely bring water). Bring your passport or other ID if travelling with teens - may qualify for a cheaper price if you can prove they’re below 18! Only down side was that many areas were restricted to tours only.

The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is truly a gem. While the Acropolis is iconic, this museum is a captivating highlight. I enjoyed a pleasant two-hour solo tour, using the audio guide for a rich experience (while the museum does offer an audio guide, I found the Rick Steves Audio Europe free app to be a fantastic alternative. Highly recommended). A must-visit for history enthusiasts.

Museum has great exhibits and artifacts. The starting area is very cool and interesting with how it starts off in Neolithic Greece and walks you through the ages into Cycladic and Mycenaean times. However once the starter exhibit ends so does the organisation because it opens up into a big sprawling area without much guidance. They should keep the theme of moving through time as this adds great context to the exhibits. Otherwise, this is a great museums with tonnes of amazing statues and artifacts from Greek history. Lots of great information for the exhibits in English as well. The Antikythera mechanism is amazing but they don't really do much with it other than show it. Overall definitely worth a visit if you are in Athens and like history.

Must visit museum in Athens. There is the usual pottery and statues, but the most interesting exhibit here for me is the Antikythera mechanism. It's also a good place for cooling down if you are visiting Athens during summer as it gets very very hot in the afternoons.

If want to see stuff from does all around Greece, this is the place to go. This place is a lot bigger than what we expected, especially for the price. I was awe struck most of time. Thankfully all the informational tablets were in Greek and English. I would highly recommend this is your a history buff or even if you just want too go look at some statues. Exhibits run from ancient Greece through the Roman empire in Greece. Downfall, we took our camelbacks and they make you check your backpacks. We tried to explain that this was just a wearable water bottle, but the guy checking bags spoke only enough English to tell us or number. We tried to use our translator, but he seemed uninterested and irritated in our efforts to inform him. Otherwise I would give a full on 5 stars.

A museum you need to visit. Very interesting and some top pieces in their collection. Also nice that students don't pay anything if they are from the EU ( in all museums in Athens) A little bit party Thatcher the walk direction through the different spaces isn't clear.

Very spacious museum with beautiful artefacts and insightful historical information provided. We took our time to go through the galleries and after a couple of hours we had done only about half the museum. We were not handed a map at the entrance so you may try to get one if possible; in particular because there are some corners of the museum that seem quite hidden, like the one of Athena that is worth seeing. From the museum you can access the garden to have a break at the cafeteria.

It hosts some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity. It is considered one of the greatest museums in the world and contains the richest collection of Greek Antiquity artifacts worldwide

The best and most complete museum I visited in Athens. I can't belive the Antikythera mechanism was here. The place is huge and I recommend taking your time. Students get a discount so the ticket is 6 euros.

  • 5/5 Andreas F. 7 months ago on Google
We spent around 3 hours. 12€ during summer and 6€ during winter, but check the website, because there are days and special occasions with free entrance.. It is worth a visit and captures the entire ancients history of greece with marvellous exhibits.

This is one of the best museums I've been to. It doesn't have any fancy concept. But the descriptions are informative and it has some of the most amazing artfiacts in the whole world. My favorite: The mask of "Agamemnon".

One of the best museums I ever visited. This museum has a vast collection of vases, statues, and many other artefacts. I recommend anyone who comes to Athens to visit this place. They have a shop and a cafe down below. I recommend.

It's good to visit the museum after going to the archaeological sites though I found it hard to keep track of the different eras at times. It's 12€ in summer and the café and terrace are pleasant. I visited on a Saturday afternoon and although it was busy there were no queues.

  • 4/5 Patrícia N. 5 months ago on Google
Worth visiting if you want to learn more abou the history of Athens and Greece and you have some spare time. I visited the museum in November when the price was reduced to 6€ and I didn't have to wait at the entrance at all. Inside, it is a little unclear which direction to follow, but the displays are very interesting and you can learn a lot.

Museum should have been closed. It was however "open". Paid full price for the entrance. Half of the expositions were closed "for renovations". 90% of the screens with interactive content were broken or off. Shop was closed for inventory. Cafe was closed as well. Quite a terrible experience. Wouldn't recommend. Go to the Acropolis Museum instead!
