A total dump. Also not quite a hostel. The fact that refugees in the next room were cooking really smelly foods there and kept yelling and shouting on the hallway and banging doors was explained as part of their „social work“. This was also the explanation for no warm water - they shut down the water heaters to save energy cost. Otherwise the rooms would be too expensive for the refugees, I was told. Supposedly there would be water mid day through some solar tank, but that was not the case. On top of that the place is poorly maintained with things more than obviously wrecked. See pictures. Staff seemed disorganized and confused, except for one young guy who was friendly and promised to „inform management“. Just it seems this place is some sort of self-organized refugee shelter that has no management, at least none that would deserve the name. To be clear: I have stayed in many hostels over the years. My expectation is realistic: a clean, basic room with a hot shower and a bed, everything functioning and in good working order. This „hostel“ does not meet these expectations. Did I mention the drunk guy reeking booze walking the hallway? Or Kids playing and yelling in the hallway during the night, well after midnight? Different than advertised, also no breakfast was available. Probably a good thing. One star is way too much. Don‘t be stupid. You get a decent airbnb room in the same area for the same price or less I paid for a private room at this dump. My response to the answer from the hostel: Yes, my review is fair and it is truthful. I even provided evidence with pictures. What you write is not true. Yes, Welcommon Hostel is unique - uniquely horrible. It is also strange that you do not accept criticism to upgrade the experience and make things better. Instead you insult those who had a horrible experience in your dump.

As a solo female traveller I did not feel safe, clean or comfortable here. There were fights in the reception, no wifi in rooms and no real washing facilities. With broken lights, no working plugs, shared showers with no hot water or soap and just a broken shower head over a drain and no curtain or aircon or ability to buy drinking water to stay alive (as you can’t drink tap water) and metal frame beds with dirty floors and weird rust underneath the bunks- this place is below basic. The lockers don’t lock, the lifts don’t work, the kitchen has no cooking facilities other than a basic oven. There is no kettle, no microwave, no space to store food as the fridge is used by the refugees as their home. Whilst the staff are kind and awesome, this is not a hostel for tourists but a refugee centre. It’s too dirty, noisy and hot in the rooms to sleep and has no comforts whatsoever. I wholeheartedly support their intentions but would not recommend staying here. It’s not a vacation place. Go to a hostel that is built for tourists.

I stayed in this hostel for a while and it was an awesome human experience, living around refugees teaches you so much. The staff is open minded, ready to help at any time of the night and makes awesome cappucinos! The hostel is very clean, and even if solar pannels are used for the water, the shower is always hot! The initiative of the hostel is amazing and I would like to stay there again.

No hot water for showers in May. Room was reasonably clean. Kitchen has virtually no cooking utensils for cooking or even eating. No dish soap, no hot water for cleaning dishes, no microwave, no free breakfast. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Has a good variety of restaurants, bars and small grocery stores nearby. Toilet was continuously running a a small amount of water as it needed a new flapper, I guess. Price was inexpensive (we paid 140 euros for 4 nights!), and you get what you pay for. They seem to have changed their mission from being a youth hostel to being a refugee centre.

Nice comfy beds and friendly staff but the meals were not great.. rarely any hot water in the room and sometimes i found cockroaches in the bathroom. Also wifi only works in the lobby area. No wifi was available in the rooms.

Welcommon is awesome! As a hostel it is clean, inexpensive and perfectly located in the heart of one of the coolest neighborhoods of Athens.Their social mission, to empower refugees, to integrate them into society, and to operate in an environmentally sustainable fashion is brilliant.

Was here for a week long conference. The staff were really friendly and made some lovely food for us. As hostels go it's a fairly good one.

What a nice place!! It was my first time in Athens and I immediately felt welcome and at home! Such a great atmosphere, wonderful people from so many different places, good talks, good vibes... thanks again for everything!

It is a such great place. The staff and the volunteers are super helpful and nice. The social aspect about the Hostel is amazing and I appreciate your work a lot. They organize a lot of very cool and fun activities for travelers, refugees, locals etc. - just for everyone who likes to join. It is a safe space where they make you feel welcomed and empowered! I love it!

I had a great experience at Welcommon hostel. I stayed here for about 10 days. The hostel is clean, the rooms are cleaned frequently, towels and linens are included, and breakfast is free every morning. The staff is extremely kind and sociable and has gone out of their way to make us feel comfortable. The entire hostel and its funds are completely devoted to taking care of refugees and helping them to integrate into society. It was an honor to stay here.

I stayed in Welcommon Hostel this summer and had a great time: great location close to the center and the monuments and a lot of nice places to eat and have a drink, I liked the atmosphere, the friendly staff, interacting with various volunteers taking part in social activities and the refugees from all over the world who came to learn or take part in activities. A great place with a noble mission which deserves all our support!

Nice location, the rooms and the conference room were clean. Staff was kind and very helpful (except for one guy who wouldn't leave us alone) and took extra care of us all during riot hours in the area. The woman in charge on the other hand was horrible and only cares about making MORE and MORE and MORE money, had no manners and zero respect. Hostels are meant for kindness and care, not over-profiting and exploitation.

Welcommon and welcoming hostel. One of the better hostel in the Europe in the very heart of Athens run by two always kind owners and always next to the guests.

  • 5/5 Audrey S. 4 years ago on Google
Absolutely loved staying here. The location is great for getting a feel for Athens, there's great places to get authentic Greek food for just a few euros around every corner, and the street art and graffiti are incredible. The rooms are clean and well maintained, and there are lounge areas with couches and books in different languages that are perfect for a quiet afternoon. There are beautiful murals from back when Welcommon was a refugee housing/social integration facility. Friendly staff, breakfast every morning (simple but tasty with different options), awesome location, overall a great place to stay.

It is unfortunate that it went pretty bad because the staff is nice and the place seems to put effort on develloping social projects. Beds were clean, matresses were good. However, some things were broken in the room, such as the curtain of the window, the curtain of the shower, the sink and the shelf of the bathroom. Not that bad but quite annoying sometimes. Also it wasn't the cleanest : hair was found in the shower, some spots here and there. But I could have forgot all of that if the air conditionning was working. The heat wave was fully hitting Athens and the room was a nightmare to sleep in. I had to wake up four times during the night to drink a all bottle of water and still felt thirsty. Only had a fan to help a bit but it was just too much. As I told them about it not working, they said they had to fix it but they couldn't really do anything more. It's probably a good place for students to stay when the air conditionning works so I hope they'll fix it and the sooner the better. They should tell about it in their socials cause someone older could have been really sick from the heat. Too bad.

I visited the hostel 2 days ago, as they hosted an Erasmus project that my friends attend there. I felt really sorry that my friends have to stay in this unacceptable place! The place is so dirty, the lobby smells awful and it is so crowded with people who don't wear COVID masks. The elevators may randomly stop working, depending on whether you're lucky or not. I won't talk about the aesthetics of the rooms, because the real problem is that they have cockroaches... There is only one shower and one toilet to share for so many people, and everything seems to have never been restored. I wouldn't go back.

Dear all, It is embarrassing for me to see all those illusory and unreal negative comments regarding the Hostel, just heartbroken! I hereby, highly appreciate all the services they are providing for the refugees who doesn't even pay a Cent. This so kind of them! Their generosity, kindness and good behavior is well appreciated. Thumbs up!

This is by far one of the most run down hostels I've come across. No aircon and the rooms are absolutley boiling. Didn't feel safe leaving the windows open at night in this area. Lots of children running around so think this hostel has some permanent guests. The area itsself isn't ideal as it is about a 20 minute walk from athens center and on the streets there is lots if litter, smells like urine etc a positive about the location is it is about a 30 second walk from an amazing little road of bars and restaurants that were fun and lively. Although one of these clubs closes at 6am and it is very loud and you will hear it in the hostel. The sheets and towels provided were a bit dirty and the shared facilities were grim. No handsoap in any of the bathrooms. The only positives of this hostel are the friendly staff and the cheap bar.

No aircon. In 40 degrees made the room a straight sauna. We had booked for multiple days but had to cancel our stay after only 1 night. Our roommate (who had been in prison before) described it as worse than prison. I would highly recommend…to my worst enemy

There was no air conditioning and plastic wrapped mattresses so we were sleep in a pool of our own sweat. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience. There was no point to be able have the fan to hit all of us.

€18,50 for a bed in a dormitory is crazy! they say they’re inclusive, but that’s not an inclusive price at all - especially that I arrived late in the night. They also charge €5 for keeping the bags if you are leaving later than checkout time…. They apparently take pride in taking all kinds of travelers - I wonder who can stay for this price….. But I for sure had to spend the night outside when they had free beds because I couldn’t afford it.

Everything about my stay at Welcommon Hostel was absolutely superb. The breakfast was delicious, the staff was kind and helpful, the facilities were clean, and many tourist destinations were just a short walk away. Welcommon has a fascinating history of being a place of cooperation and integration for refugees, and the kindness that the owners have shown to the populations that stayed here in the past is shown through their customer service to guests. Finally, the balconies on the top floor have beautiful views of the city. The balcony off of our room had a table and bench-- it was the best place to bring back takeaway food from a shop down the street and eat in the evenings. If you are to visit Athens, Welcommon should be at the top of your list of places to stay.

This hostel has clean rooms and a really friendly staff. They have a convenient conference room and a nice lounge area in the lobby, as well as a kitchen and dining area. They are a short walk to the Archaeological Museum and the metro, so it's a nice place to stay when you want to travel around Athens!

When we arrived there were people in our room doing nothing which was very weird and kind of unsettling, but after that everything was fine. Air conditioning was not working and it was fine at the time but not ok because on booking they said air conditioning, was more like ventilation. Bed surprisingly good for the price, not much noise either. A dog almost bit me near the entrance because some weird people hang out there. Never felt in danger though. A definitely OK place for young people with low spending power, overall.

Our stay in Welcommon was wonderful! The staff was friendly, the rooms were spacious and had great views of the city, the complimentary breakfast was delicious, and the location was close to great tourist attractions. The national archeological museum and mount Lycabettus are only a short walk away and the neighborhood around the hostel is vibrant and full of shops and cafes. The unique experience for a good price was unbeatable. 100% recommend.

Welcommon is an amazing hostel with an outstanding staff. The history behind the place is rich and full of stories of refugees and humanitarian work. I highly recommend staying here and helping out the cause. The area surrounding the hostel is full of life and it is also within walking distance of the acropolis, agora, national archeological museum etc. All the must see spots. The beach is only a 40-minute bus ride away on one line. It was nice not having to transfer and the ticket was only three euros. The neighborhood comes alive at night and the hostel is surrounded by bar after bar. The rooms are simple and clean. We got a two-bed room with our own private bathroom and it was more than ideal. It felt more like a hotel than a hostel and If you frequent hostels you know that's a breath of fresh air. We were on the sixth floor and had perfect wifi in the room and also in the lobby. We were able to stream netflix at night before bed. The hostel has two elevators so you don't have to lug your luggage up six flights of stairs. The hostel also has a meeting room with an overhead projector that can be used for meetings. This place would be awesome for people of all ages and I will definitely be back the next time I am in Athens. I have nothing but good things to say.

Stayed here for 9 days and I definitely would book again! The staff is very helpful and kind, rooms are clean and neat, free wifi, free breakfast. Walking distance from many spots such as the National Archeological museum and mount Lycabettus. Truly an Athens inner city experience. I stayed on the 7th floor and loved the view !!! If you're traveling solo there is very convenient and comfortable rooms for study and if you're with a group there is a conference room on the second floor available to the guests.

  • 5/5 Noorul J. 4 years ago on Google
After a very long flight and exhaustion, it was refreshing to be welcomed by polite guests. the hostel is located in a very active place. It's a catch for those who seek local adventures, inexpensive food and streets covered in graffiti. amenities include wifi, lobby, kitchen, conference rooms, dinning room, breakfast and delicious dinner cooked by those at the hostel. The rooms are clean and the balcony has a great view of the city and Mt.Lycabettus. Once this place used to accomodate refugees, so you will be able to experience the artwork of the refugee kids in the walls throughout the hallways and stairs. There is a conference room with projectors ideal for student groups and those traveling for business purposes. The streets near the hostel are also covered in artworks and very friendly people. I highly recommend this place for your stay in Athens.

It was a pleasure to come and stay at the Welcommon Hotel. The human and social aspect are the main qualities of this hostel and I felt it as soon as I arrived. The staff is very welcoming, human and especially listening to our needs. Their enthusiasm and their kindness were felt and it is in that that I recommend to all the people in search of sociability and new discoveries to come and stay at Welcommon Hostel.
