It's a long time since I have seen a meat market of this type and size. Everything is on open display and you can watch the butchers at work. It all looked fresh but you if you want to buy you will have to turn a blind eye to the motor bikes driving through and the butchers smoking round the back. It's a hygiene inspectors nightmare. The surrounding streets are lined with shops and stalls selling everything from books to beetroot. Well worth a stroll through.

I travel solo and in my experience a city's central market is one of best places you can understand their culture. Varvakios Central Market offers a-one-stop place for all the local delicacies at extremely reasonable rates. The market is full of local produce of fresh meats, vegetables, fruits, dry fruits and more. I would highly recommend to purchase olives, olive oils, hazelnuts and walnuts. The locals are more than welcoming and warm to let you taste the cheese, fruits, olives etc.

So sorry that we were tourists as really had zero reason to shop here. However, good chance if I lived in local area, my food supply would be from here daily. Fresh seafood of items you don't find here in the states, butchered meat right in front of you. Spices, nuts and veggies in surrounding areas. There are a few random restaurants and wine bars in the vicinity, but think this area is all about your ability to do things yourself. If you find yourself with a meal you need to make yourself while in Athens. Don't miss this area.

It’s certainly worth wandering through here, but if you have a weak stomach then the mix of smells and meat on display might be rather difficult to handle! I’m not sure I could consider buying anything, but seeing how the locals live is insightful and it’d be a shame not to check it out while in the city.

Do NOT enter if you're vegetarian. I repeat. Do not enter. It's a unique experience to walk around and see the various animals and foods. Smells are overwhelming. If you're in Athens, check this place out. It's crazy! But I loved it 🤣

WOW 😳 Just fantastic, great fun 🤩 I happen to like olives and nuts and dried fruits. Endless selections and very reasonable prices compared to the US 🤑 There is also a flea market nearby.

The single biggest place to buy especially fresh and varied fish is in Athens. There is also a red meat section. But the section selling fish was much more attractive to me. In fact, it might be more accurate to say seafood. It is a place where you can find many seafood such as lobster, octopus, shark, mussel. Vendors are very practical. immediately cleans the fish you bought. Transportation is also very easy. But car parking is a bit of a problem.

It’s place is just magical! Glad I got to see it before they start renovating in the winter. I’ll have to come back once it’s finished. Such a great place to come and browse, taste, and experience Greek cuisine. There is a meat, fish and vegetable market. They also have all kinds of teas, spices, olives and nuts.

Definitely one of the best places to have coffee in Athens, far away from typical tourists spots. And you can enjoy in local products, especially at fish market.

In the main building are rows of meat and variety of fish products. It’s easy to buy fish and order to cook in the café on the same territory. Fruits, vegetables and species can be bought outside the main building. Also, the antique market located on the parallel street, interesting and impressive things can be found there.

Love Love Love this market. Great insight into Greek food culture! Defo go. Fish Hall is awesome! ⚠️We were warned twice that the area outside can be a bit dodgy so be warned

A busy traditional market where you can buy pretty much any type of meat (poultry, lamb, beef, pork, etc.) and fresh seafood (small and big fish, squid, octopus, shrimp, crab, oyster, lobster). In one corner of the area there is a couple of fruit stands as well. The prices are very good compared to supermarkets.

The place are very nice but I recommend 2 things... Don't go in the fish market coz the smell is very terrible... If you wanna buy something tack a look at all shops and read the price coz you can find a big difference between them sometimes 10 meters far from each other

When you like market and the market feeling, this is the right place with fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and butchers. Around the market are small restaurants one can visit, great and cheap food. Also a good place to get presents or eatable souvenirs.

Central Athens "Varvakios" Markets is a wonderful destination for anyone looking to experience the true essence of Athens. As a tourist, I was drawn to the market's vibrant and bustling atmosphere, which gave me a unique glimpse into the daily life of the city. The market is located in a large, multi-level building that houses a wide variety of food stalls and shops. As I walked through the market, I was amazed by the sheer variety of fresh produce, meat, fish, cheese, and spices on offer. The vendors were friendly and helpful, and I was able to negotiate with them to get the best prices. One of my favorite sections of the market was the fish section, which was brimming with a vast array of fresh seafood. I was able to sample some of the local delicacies and found them to be absolutely delicious. Overall, the Central Athens "Varvakios" Markets is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and experience Athens like a local. The market is a feast for the senses, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Athens.

The historical center of the city was mostly a market. Trade was carried out here for centuries. These buildings would need significant renovation today. But you still soak up the atmosphere of the past here. You can mostly buy fish, seafood and meat here. All around are stalls with nuts, olives, spices and honey. A short distance away is a small market with vegetables and fruits.

The market is on the "must see" list in any country. I was in this market 15 years ago, it was wilder then. Now everything was nicely cleaned, nothing smelled. In the evening we happened to pass by and saw how it was thoroughly cleaned. Friendly sellers, we even wanted to buy meat, although we lived in a hotel and there was no way to cook it. 😆

Very interesting place to visit and a must see when in Athens. Fantastic selection of fresh fruits and vegetables on one side and the fish and meat market on the other. Interesting to walk around and taste the local produce (which the venders were happy for you to do). I thought the prices were very reasonable although some vendors were a little cheeky and would try and bag more than you wanted. Great fun shopping with amazingly colourful and varied produce from all throughout Greece.

A very large market. In the center of Athinas Street. The fruits and vegetables are particularly beautiful and very tasty in cheap prices! Interesting second hand stores are scattered among the food stalls. not clean. The sights of the Meat Market in the alleys are hard to watch and leave a hard memory. Not for kids. Not the best and most pleasant neighborhood in town to hang around. An unquestionable experience.

Here is a heaven of fishes. It is the best fish market in Europe. Everything is fresh. People are very friendly. They cleaned also fishes that we bought. In addition, i think in Athens fish is very cheap. We bought so many types of fish to cook in our Airbnb. You can see the prices also below. We paid for everything only 10 euro. Sea boss per kg: 6 euro Shrimps per kg: 8 Euro Calamari per kg: 6 Euro Sardinen per kg: 2 Euro

Amazing market place! Many kinds of fish and meat offered by crazy (in a good way) and shouting sellers. Some of them, unfortunately, aren't Greeks so it's difficult to communicate with them in another language than their native. Very good quality products! You'll enjoy it.

One thing you should do when exploring a new place is walking through it's local market, you candidly will know how the locals live their daily life's, what they use on their diets, how much the local products cost and the best, surely you will find a variety of products and some new ones you did not know that exist. In this market you will find all of this, and more, there are places where you can sit and taste food which was prepared using the fresh products from this location. You will watch how the butchers cut the meat, the veggies guy using its weight to precisely dispatching the fresh vegetables to the people who has requested for them, the nuts shopkeeper using its little shovel to serve its products and so on. The place is clean, compared with other similar places and is always busy, at some specific times it is not as crowded, but is not as common. In the surroundings of the market you will find stores, restaurants, boutiques, antique shop and convenience stores in a very secure environment. The closest metro station is Monastiraki (600 mts) or Omnia (roughly 500 mts).
