James was our tour guide and provided an amazing tour today as we walked through wonderful sites in Athens, Greece. He was knowledgeable and funny as he shared so much history and information about this wonderful city. This is definitely your first stop if you are visiting Athens. Don't miss this free tour and get to know the City from an experienced guide like James!

This is a GREAT tour! Our guide, Billie, was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. The group wasn’t too big, just 10-12 people, and the tour was as described. We saw many of the sites in Athens, and Billie was sure to stop to discuss each place in the shade. We saw the stadium, presidential house, gardens, those iconic narrow streets, Plaka, and so much more. Billie even pointed out a few local restaurants and shops that she enjoys herself. She was a fabulous guide and the tour was both informative and fun! Huge thanks to Athens Free Tours!

Basically it was the best walking tour that I have experienced! Really enjoyed the whole tour! Even he is originally from Ireland (Living in Athens or 11 years), our tour guide was knowledgeable and had the all details about both ancient and modern day Athens! It was really fortunate to have him with us and had spent 3 breath taking hours. Strongly recommended for all who discover the city from a local eye!

This free walking tour is a must! I recommend doing it on your first day in Athens — great way to get the lay of the land and then you can decide what sites you want to go back to and spend more time at. Jon was fun, engaging, and super friendly! He was more than happy to help us with our Greek, give recommendations, and point us in the right direction to wherever we wanted to visit during our time in Athens. 10/10 🇬🇷

We did tour with James (I hope I got his name right, he is from Scotland), it was by far one of the best tours ever: he is very informative and funny, very interactive and spontaneous, very knowledgeable but at the same time he's not a local so you get both perspectives of the city. Being from Croatia I have to add that he's very knowledgeable about the whole Balkan region which was very impressive. Highly recommended!

I was lucky to have Eleni as my guide in Athens. She is a wealth of knowledge, is extremely personable, and her American accent is easy to listen to. She made Athens' complicated history easy to follow. Her tour was nearly three hours but it flew by and we covered a lot of ground. The tour was well-paced and gives a great overview of the city. Definitely a great way to start a visit to Athens. Cross your fingers that you get Eleni as your guide!

Outstanding 3-hour tour with Nick Lucas, five star guide. 100% recommend everyone do this! We covered a big portion of city centre, major town squares, visiting the parliament to see change of guards, national garden, olympic stadium, the archeological ruins and good food spots!

✅ One of the best walking tours I've ever done, and that was thanks to Odysseus! He is in love with Greece, knows everything about the history, culture, and has so many tips. ✅ Also, his energy during the 3-hour tour was impressive. We did not see the time passing. ✅ Without the tour, we couldn't have visited so many interesting and beautiful spots. 📍I wholeheartedly recommend this experience. Athens demands all this information to better understand and appreciate this amazing city and country. Don't miss out, when you're there.

This was an extremely useful , helpful and interesting introduction to the city. Johnathon was funny, knowledgeable, and able to give us all great tips on culture, food and drink, mythology, geography and background to life in the city. So much information packed into a short time, allowed plenty of time for questions and showed an ability to let the group share experiences. Thanks a lot! Highly recomended.

Not just is this tour free (expected you’ll give a tip-and you should), but it is well worth doing especially at the beginning of your trip. You visit sites and even a ceremonial exchange of guards which my group would have not figured out on our own. A must do! Hopefully you get lucky and get Stathis as your guide, very animated and funny guy.

We had a wonderful tour with Johnthan! We saw so much of the city and it was a very diverse tour. He spoke to us about the historical landmarks, museums, food, dinning, nightlife, local culture, parks, getting around town and even where to get covid test for international travelers. We are going to be booking a food tour he recommended as well. After the tour ended we and another attendee went with him to a local favorite restaurant which was just fantastic and we continued to discuss local culture and more. I highly recommended this tour. I just wish they did a night life bar hopping tour too because it was very personalized and fun. I should add that it is also one of the only tours going right now during Covid; which our group was very mindful of as well. Please tip these guides!!

Had a blast doing this tour with a Scottish fellow named James. He’s completing a master’s degree on this region of the world and was full of so many historical facts and insight that I doubt many other guides know about. Definitely do this tour.

Had a great tour with John the redhead with the beard. Lot of knowledge and humor full with surprising facts :) I enjoyed it and he showed us new spots, highly recommend! From time to time he makes specific anecdotes about Israeli tourists, or Israelis who buy properties in the city - I took it with humor

Fun and informative tour. We passed many points of interest in the city. The guide Odysseu was very friendly and knew how to explain the history and culture of his people very well. A knowledge of value that I will carry, as if it were a "coin of Alexander the Great". I recommend

Maria was such a wonderful guide. The 3 hours went by quickly as we were absorbed in Maria's captivating storytelling and many interesting facts she had to share. She broke up the time very well, with some fun interactive activities like a dance or a demonstration. She has a fun sense of humour and is clearly passionate about her home and teaching others about it. Thank you Maria for your energetic, friendly and informative tour!

We joined Maria's tour on our second day in the city, and were blown away by both her depth of knowledge about the city's history, and her passion for the topic. She encouraged everyone in our group to get to know each other, which made for a very fun couple of hours as we explored the city with our new friends. Marina lead us to interesting and unique spots around the city that we had entirely missed on our first day, all while providing us with local knowledge about this unique and historic city. I'd recommend this tour to anyone this city for the first time, as it will leave you well equipt to discover the city over the duration of your stay.

This was a wonderful tour with exceptional guides. The information about the sites we saw provided a historical background and was conveyed in an interesting way. There is nothing better than having a knowledgeable tour guide who can provide you with an interesting tour while being able to answer any other questions you may come up with along the way. I would highly recommend this to anyone who comes to see Athens.

This tour was fabulous! George was such a great and entertaining storyteller. I remember insights from Greek history days after (and hopefully also in the future). There was just the right amount of walking and talking and whenever I had an additional question, George could answer it on the spot! I loved the additional recommendation on where to get a great view of the city and what museum to visit. I did both and I sure was not disappointed. I fully recommend!

Jonathon was an excellent tour guide full of historical, practical and directional knowledge of Athens. I also thought he was quite funny. If you don't have a lot of time in Athens, this tour is definitely still worth your time as they'll tell you good places to go, what to avoid, and show you where and how to watch out for pickpockets.

Really wonderful tour. Our guide, Evangulio, was very knowledgeable, friendly and polite. Always happy to answer our questions, even if we went off on a tangent from the point he was explaining :-). The walk itself is not at all strenuous, covering all the main highlights of this historically fascinating city. Any point that involved a slight climb, was broken up by points of interest, allowing people to rest. We highly recommend it.

(Translated by Google) Fatal, we did the tour with George, and apart from telling things that, by documentation read before the tour in travel guides did not coincide with reality, the police stopped him at the time of starting the tour, putting us all in a situation something awkward I do not recommend it. Look for other alternative guides in the afternoon (when there are no official guides) because the situation of the free tours is very tense. And yes, there is a George, or at least he was holding a sign from your team. And he was wearing what was described in the confirmation. So no, no mistake has been made. We did this tour Aug 2019, it was awesome, the group sizes can get a bit big but the guide does well to ensure that everyone hears the content. He covered alot so if your like me, i suggest putting some notes in your phone. We stopped numerous times for water because it was SOOO hot, I recommend having a hat and even an umbrella as there is hardly any shade on the walk. I recommend doing the sunday morning walk as they incorporate the changing of the guards! My wife and I had great tour in August! Our guide was very kind to make it only for 3 persons who showed up, because of rain! It was super interesting and informative. We enjoyed the tour a lot. I wanted to mention a name of the guide, but unfortunately, I forgot it 🤷‍♂️ She is Greek, but was raised in US and when Greek National team was celebrating victory on 2014 on Panathenaic Stadium she was lost there and came up on the stage with a team 🙂 Maybe owner can mention the name in the response message 🙂

Must do walking tour on Day 1 in Athens. Our guide was Jonathan who made the walking trip around Athens very enjoyable. He shared interesting bits about the history of the country and it really felt like we covered most of Athens in under 3 hours! Jonathan was witty and concise which made time go quite quickly! Highly recommended.

Very interesting tour and well worth joining if you have time . Jonathan was a lively, well-informed tour guide with a great humor. Difficult to cater for a large audience, but I would prefer if tour group sizes were smaller and more of the time was spent explaining the historical timeline of the city , as well as its contributions to the formation of western philosophy and civilization.

The tour was amazing. George made the whole group smile and laugh frequently. I would love to go on a tour with them again in the evening. I hope I have enough time to do it. Thank you for all the support & for opening our eyes to the hidden gems of Athens.

Always take a free tour when in a new town. A very good start to get bearings and plan your Athens visit.

Myself and my girlfriend did the walking tour with a guide named George. The tour itself was excellent. We were brought to places we never would have visited and learned so many interesting things about Athens and Greece. We also got to witness the changing of the guards which was a bonus. Our guide George was amazing. His English was perfect, he was a lot of fun and knew his stuff about history! Would highly recommend and thank you to George for guiding us!!

Me and my girlfriend had a fantastic walking tour with Jonathan. He took us not only to the most relevant places, explaining their stories, but also to some hidden spots that we could have never found alone. He gave us useful tips, recommendations and, in the end, some of us joined him for dinner and drinks in Athens. I totally recommend this tour!

Highly recommend taking this tour on your first day in the city. You’ll get great knowledge and history on the city (along with some exercise!) learned so much and met great people. George was our guide and he was fabulous. Bring water, sunscreen and comfy shoes!

The tour covers all important landmarks of central Athens and includes a lot of fun facts from the city's life and history. Our guide, Vera, was extremely nice, enthusiastic, and super knowledgeable! I can wholeheartedly recommend the tour to both those who came to Athens for a quick visit (like me) and those who wish to stay longer, as an introduction to the capital.

Vera was a wonderful guide! The tour gave great historical details and context to Athens. I’d recommend doing this at the beginning of your Athens trip because Vera had wonderful advice about what to see and prioritize for the rest of our trip.

Our guide George was very welcoming and knowledgable. The tour was a great start to our trip in Athens, and would thoroughly recommend to anyone as an introduction to the city. George also gave great recommendations for food and drinks over our trip.

Our group of four really enjoyed our free walking tour of Athens! Our tour guide did a great job of giving the highlights of the city with many interesting facts. Our guide found out last minute that she would be the only guide for a group of almost 50 & handled it extremely well! Thank you Athens Free Tour. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Athens!

I would definitely recommend this tour if you are new to Athens. George was our guide. He was exceptional with his storytelling and sense of humour. Even though it was an evening tour we didn’t miss out on our experience of the city. Thanks for the amazing experience!!

Great tour from Eleni. She covered a lot of the city in 2.5 hours, was really knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend athens free tour to get acquainted with the city. One of the best curt walking tours I have done

We had Johnathan as our guide and couldn't be happier with the experience! The three hour tour flew by as we walked all over Athens and Johnathan showed us around. He made sure to give us historical and modern info on the different monuments, neighborhoods, streets we saw. We wouldn't have seen half the places we got to see if it wasn't for him! Highly recommended experience for anyone looking to see the city!

Jonathan was a fantastic tour guide. Entertaining, informative, always making sure that we knew where we were in relation to where we started. I do free walking tours in every European city that I visit, and I think they're an absolute must for new places. I picked up enough things to do from this tour to fill my entire trip. It was a beautiful walk too, I can't recommend it enough. Jonathan is likable, well-informed and genuine. He made an effort to get to know everyone on the tour, answered off-the-cuff questions about the city, and his love for Athens is clear in his presentation.

We had a great tour with Eleni. She covered a lot of the city monuments in a 2.5 hours tour. She presented everything in a very detailed and authentic way. She was extremely nice and outgoing. The tour is highly recommended for everyone! Great experience 🙂

The walk was very nice and we managed to see many interesting spots. The historic/cultural content of the tour was substandard. The tour guide gave a many local recommendations.

The tour was ok. We had someone from Ireland, he took us on a 3 hour tour and showed us points of interest. However, he wasn’t very engaging - didn’t really bring much energy with him and was quite dry and a little unfriendly even. I guess for a free tour with tips at the end it does it’s job but we’ve been on many of these in other countries and they happened to be much more engaging.

  • 5/5 Marc B. 2 years ago on Google
A fantastic Sunday morning tour led by Jonathan. Lively, informative and entertaining. Proof, if needed, that you can never keep a good Irishman down, wherever he is!! ☘️☘️☘️

  • 5/5 RMR 2 years ago on Google
George our tour guide was as engaging as he was knowledgeable. He did spare more than enough time in going the extra mile to explain fun facts as well as important details in every stop. I also had the impression that you could ask him anything and he would know the reply. Higher quality than the average free tour elsewhere in one of the most important cities in Europe.

The tour was great. Just what we needed. Eleni was a great guide. Gave us so much information. She speaks English fluently, which is a great plus. Gave us a lot of recommendation. It is a great tour to do at the start of your trip, it will help you focus on what you want to see next.

This walking tour gives you a fantastic insight into the, philosophical, geographical and architectural way Athens has developed from 600BC to present day. Throughout the tour our guide, Jonathan, shared in-depth knowledge and informed opinion of ancient and modern Athens. The way he engaged with our group was exceptional and drew on our shared travel experiences. We cannot recommend this guided walk highly enough.

We enjoyed our tour of Athens with our guide Jonathon. He was VERY knowledgeable about many things in Athens and was very personable. He pointed out many areas and highlights of Athens and answered whatever questions we had. I’d definitely recommend taking this tour!

We had the 6pm tour. Our guide was Jonathan, the Irish. The tour was wonderful. You get to see all of the center of the city and hear a lot of interesting stories. Jonathan as a guide was amazing, one of the best tour guides that i had. Note couple of things :1. It is a a lot of walking. A lot. Bring water and comfortable shoes. 2. Things always change in Athens so the tour will not be exactly the same every time, Jonathan knew how to deal with the changes perfectly. 3. As a free tour we don't get into any of the archeological sites as they cost money, but we did see them from outside. 4. Tip your guide at the end of the tour. This is how they make a living, i suggest 15 - 30 euro for person, depend on the length, quality and your enjoyment of the tour. You can always do more or less. 5. Sign up for the tour in advance (don't have to be a lot in advance, even an hour might be a enough, but earlier is better). 6. Have a good time, ask questions and talk to the rest of the group.

Vera! Vera! Vera! Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, helpful and fun to be with. We did a 15 day trip to Greece mainly visiting Crete and Cycladic Islands. Thought of doing a free walking tour during our one night stay in Athens. I have no plans to come back to Greece but if I do, it’ll be because of Vera. She rekindled my love for history.

Fantastic walking tour around Athens, we are a family who travel full time with our two teens (11 and 13) and we all enjoyed it. Eleni is an energetic and knowledgeable guide and made it fun and informative with just the right amount of historical facts, current events, sight seeing advice and fun anecdotes. We do many guided tours around the world and this one was one of the best. Highly recommended for adults and teens.

Great tour with Nick! He was very nice and very informative on all aspects. The pace was pleasant and we even got a 15 minute coffee break before the hill! Which was still doable and easy. Thank you Nick for our introduction to your great city.

Lilly was a very knowledgeable guide and made it fun. You learn some great fun facts about Athens and Greece in general and also tips for local spots. Meeting point was easy to find and while we didn’t quiet hit all the spots that are on the list, we entered streets and places we would have never seen. Must do!

It was a truly great experience! I highly recommend our tour guide Nick, who provided us with multiple fun facts about the city. I learned a lot about the history and culture of Athens as well as Greece in general. It was a pleasure to walk and listen. Those 3 hours passed too quickly! Thanks Nick :)

Had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide Jonathan brought us around many fascinating sights and was very knowledgeable with his insights and facts about each location. A great way to learn about the history of Athens. Also was happy for us to stop off and pick up a few beers for the walk!

Fantastic 3 hour tour of Athens. Our guide, Billie, was a wealth of knowledge and expertise. I have been on quite a few free walking tours, and this was one of the five best. So much more enjoyable than riding in a hot bus.

Great experience last Sunday on our 1st morning in Athens. Tour guide Jonathan was great fun with plenty local knowledge. Covered lots of the city in our extended 3+ tour. Highly recommend this as was brilliant to get your bearings fir our next 3 days around Athens.

Really great way to get your bearings on the city. Nick did a fantastic job in telling us the best (and worst) parts of the city. He was very knowledgable and showed us how walkable all the main sites are. Some fantastic advice which we would have needed to spend months to learn by ourselves!! He was really fun and stayed for a couple of drinks after the tour chatting more as a friend than a guide. We bumped into Nick later in our trip and he was so friendly - stopped to ask how are trip was going and catch up. He went above and beyond and would recommend to anyone - 5 stars!!!

Super informative tour! Was able to navigate important sites easily after the tour. Our guide, Dionysus (wrong spelling sorry) was so fun and youthful! Highly recommend to do this as soon as you landed in Athens.

Outstanding experience - definitely recommend! I have already taken dozens of guided tours around Europe, and this one was one of the best. "Odyssey" was a fantastic guide. He has a very good knowledge and knows how to keep everybody entertained. If you are lucky enough to have him as a guide, good for you! Thanks for the amazing experience!

Jonathan led us through the streets of Athens while teaching us so much about the history and culture of Greece. He made sure to keep us on time to see the changing of the guard, but never rushed us. He also provided an excellent recommendation for lunch and sat with us and chatted even when the tour was over. Highly recommend!

Definitely one of the best walking tours I've joined. It's a must do if you want to get a proper introduction of Athens. Persephone was an excellent guide. I could tell she enjoys what she does and loves interacting with people. Her passion for the city and it's rich history was apparent. Her story telling skills and knowledge was very impressive. She was a joy to talk to. She answered all our questions and provided great recommendations. The tour was very immersive and enjoyable. I consider it as one of the highlights of my trip to Greece. Thanks for the amazing tour, Persephone! 🙂

This was a great tour! First thing I did in Athens and I’m so glad. Lots of friendly people to meet, especially the guide. Our guide was Jonathan, the Irish redhead, but he has been living in Athens for years and he know a lot about the city. Our walk was full of history, jokes, stories, and fun facts. Note that on the tour you don’t go inside sites that require tickets, but you may see some from the outside and you’ll definitely hear about them which is fun! He knows not just the tourist stuff but also how the locals live. He personalized the tour by asking us what we had already seen and making sure to show us some things he thought might be new to us. He took us on the most important streets you need to get around central Athens. He was also a great resource for recommendations on what sites and museums were actually worth it, what order to visit them in, how to avoid pickpockets, etc. So glad I did it!

Athens Free Tour was a wonderful free walking tour around the city. My family and I were a big group of 9 and took this tour during our first day in Athens. Odysseus was a fantastic guide, keeping us moving at a fast pace and offering so much information and insight into Greek history and the sights of Athens. He took us to places we never would have found on our own and helped us connect to the city through his enthusiasm and passion. We did the 5pm tour which worked out well as it wasn’t as hot out during the walk. We were on our feet for a good 3-4 hours but there were opportunities for short breaks to sit. I can’t recommend this more if you’re in the city for only a short period of time, the earlier in your trip the better.

I've traveled the world and have been on a bunch of walking tours. This by far has been one of my favorite. My guide was Teresa on the Saturday 3pm tour, and she was excellent. The tour is definitely jam packed with facts, history, sightseeing and interaction -- be prepared to be on your toes the entire time (literally and figuratively)! She showed us all of the highlights one would want to see in Central Athens, plus so much more. Thank you for being a great, funny, and engaging guide! Highly recommend!
