I cannot recommend any food tour more highly than the Delicious Athens Food Tour with Alternative Athens! I was lucky enough to be with Josephine as a tour guide. She is fun knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. I really enjoyed the tour through a lot of traditional Greek foods. You get a great experience from fresh olive oils, breads, meats, coffee, numerous traditional dishes, desserts, and so much more. Additionally walking around town you will get info on the neighborhoods, customs, and even some historical background thrown in. While the tour is food centered it is a great way to get a crash course in local Greek life. I ask a lot of questions so I really got a great education from the 4 hours we toured around. Josephine is from Athens and she also happens to have a masters in archeology so she really has a lot of wisdom to share. I really enjoyed touring through the Central Market and seeing all of the food vendors there. I can’t think of anything negative to say about this tour. It is a very designed tour and well thought out in terms of stops. I am someone who tends to go on a food tour in every major city and country I visit – I’ve probably been on at least 20+ food tours – and without hesitation this was the most memorable experience that I had. I was even sent some traditional Athens recipes via email after the tour ended. The company Alternative Athens is prompt at responding to inquiries and they are incredibly professional (but also without losing that personal touch). I hope to return and to do more tours with them. Thank you again to Josephine and Alternative Athens!!!

I booked a tour to Acropolis with a friend. I am Greek and I have been to Acropolis many times but this tour was special and I found out so much more about Acropolis and ancient Greece than I anticipated! The organisation of the tour was excellent, clear and easy. Our tour guide, Danai, was inspiring, and gave us a holistic view (historical, mythological and architectural) of the Acropolis. She also told us various stories about the myths and the history related to Acropolis. It was fascinating! I would highly recommend it.

Really great tour of the acropolis. Very high quality guide (she was an archeologist), great narrative and kindness. You really learn, get the full context of what you are visiting and enjoy the journey. Highly recommend.

Did both the Mythology tour and the Food tour and both were fantastic! Good combination of mythology and history whichever tied together so well for the locations! Very informative. Made sure to stop often and tried to find spots in the shade because it was really hot! Comfortable shoes and sunscreen are a must on the Mythology tour but the food tour had some sitting down at places or being inside. I've had a few friends ask me about these tours and I keep recommending them!

We took the Alternative Athens city tour with Katerina in early June. We have had city tours all over the world and Katerina's tour was one of the best. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the city was infectious. We saw so much and learned so much in our 5 hours. My feet hurt at the end. This is the best way to start a trip to Greece !

Excellent graffiti tour, very interesting, going through places you would never get to by yourself, telling the stories behind the street art. Highly recommended!

Josephine is a fantastic guide. As an Athenian, art lover and archaeologist, she was able to show us the alternative side of Athens. We did the street art tour with her which we cannot recommend enough. We would have never found some of the cool streets and neighbourhoods without her. She was patient, attentive and enthusiastic. Highly recommended!

Our family of six booked the Young Heros Mythology Tour. Our guide, Helena, was knowledgeable and so patient with our boys. She answered all their questions and joked around with the kids. I enjoyed how the tour focused on noble characteristics and also flaws, it lead to great conversations with our kids. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone, it was definitely worth the price.

Wonderful tour guided by Elena. Each guide blends in their neighborhood favorites and local guides exchange tips with each other. Felt like walking and exploring the city with a friend.

Very interesting street art tour with Elena on 6 Jan, which included parts of Athens you may not usually visit. Elena was very knowledgeable regarding the art and artists - even though the art seems to be constantly changing and being updated. If you want to know all about artists like Ino, Maria, the Krah and Achilles and want to differentiate between Roko and Ruin, this is the tour for you. We spent the reamining days of our holiday spotting additional pieces by these artists all over the city. Highly recommended.

Great experience! Andreas was a fantastic host for this intelligent cultural tour. Often we see graffiti and grime and wonder why the city doesn’t just clean it up. For some graffiti, that’s a fair point. But for other types of graffiti through to genuine street art, that would be a misleading impression. Andreas educated us on the history and cultural significance of street art, from basic “tagging” to elaborate and beautiful scenes that often had political undertones we would’ve missed without his guidance. This involved a few hours walk through some areas we would’ve missed and an introduction to named street artists such as Ino, whose work would grace any building. Overall, highly recommended for a sense of Athens that will round out the more typical tourism activities.

Pavlina S was our guide and she is an absolute gem of a guide! She is personable and took the time to get to know everyone by name and she has great knowledge of the Athenian culture and food! She even went as far as giving us a recipe book for most of the foods we tried via email and also told us to contact her for anything more for tours! We had an asking tour with her finding all the authentic hole in the wall restaurants and learning the culture and history about all the foods. It was a wonderful time 5+ stars to her and the tour. Can’t highly recommend it enough. A MUST do at the start of your trip to find all the best places. Cannot recommend enough!!

My wife & I took the Delicious Athens Food tour offered by Alternative Athens on November 8, 2023. Our guide was Haris Balasopoulos. The tour was a walking tour that lasted roughly 3:15 hours. I believe we made seven stops along the way, with each stop offering some different aspect of Greek Cuisine. By the time we were finished, not only were we very full, we had also gained a solid understanding of the many types of foods that make up Greek Cuisine, but also gained an understanding how it contributes to the legend of the Mediterranean diet. Haris was very knowledgeable, and kept his promise of following up with several recipes to those of us who volunteered our email addresses. We highly recommend this tour.

I highly recommend the Street Art Tour with Alternative Athen - it’s a great way to see parts of Athens you wouldn’t find easily on your own. Andreas is a wonderful guide. He’s very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the street art scene, ancient and modern Greek history and politics. A great way to begin your stay in Athens.

Pavlina's graffiti tour in Athens is a vibrant exploration guide her infectious passion for street art. With a keen eye for diversity, she skillfully weaves together politically charged murals and abstract expressions, creating a captivating journey through the city's hidden gems.d by The tour's perfect pacing allows for questions and discussions, making it both informative and enjoyable. Pavlina's engaging storytelling, coupled with her deep knowledge and personal connections, sets this tour apart as an unforgettable cultural experience. Whether an art enthusiast or a curious traveler, Paulina's guided tour is a must for anyone seeking a colorful and authentic glimpse into Athens' street art scene.

We had the best time on this tour. I didn't realize that a tour covering the last several centuries of Athens' growth would be so fascinating. Pavlina is a great guide and you should definitely ask for her if you're wanting to do a great our.

We had the best time! Josephine was kind and an engaging tour guide that answered our questions and gave us a memorable experience in Athens. I was there with my husband on our honeymoon and we were paired with 3 other families during our tour. In total 10 of us. It was so fun to experience different foods from small, locally revered places most of us would never find. The walk a great way to view the city and experience local foods. My favorite was the moussaka and the olive oil tasting (with cheese, local bread, olive tapenade and eggplant spread)! We tried baklava, turkish coffee, pork souvlaki and more. My husband and I really enjoyed the tour, learning about food and culture in Athens. Would recommend!

We spent the morning with our fantastic guide Elena tasting the very best of Athens. Via a thoughtful curated itinerary, Elena guides with through traditional Greek deserts, coffee, souvlaki… by the time we were done we had seen numerous neighborhoods, dove into ancient history, and tasted an amazing array of dishes. Elena, our guide, was great with our 12 year old twin boys. She engaged them in conversation and really enjoyed their quirky comments and patiently answered our questions. I was a little concerned about the kids handling the tour with jet lag (we arrived the night before from Seattle.) The pace of the tour was just right! Would highly recommend as a first pass at the city to learn about food, culture, and the city.

Fantastic tour yesterday with Magda. The 4 hour Acropolis Mythology Tour was amazing. Magda is so friendly and welcoming making sure she knows everyone by name and where they come from within minutes of meeting. Not only is Magda extremely knowledgeable about the sites and mythology, she is also informative about life in Athens. The pace of the tour was perfect. Plenty of "free time" at the sites to take photos etc. It didn't feel rushed and walking between the Acropolis and Agora sites gave us a better idea of the layout of the city (we had only arrived the night before). Highly recommend.

My brother and I did the Athens Highlights: A Mythological tour with Danai (sorry, not sure about spelling) and it was an incredible experience. Danai is an amazing storyteller and each tale she told was captivating in the way she was able to pass down stories from Greek mythology, but also enlightening in the way she was able to interweave themes and takeaways about democracy and humanity. The experience was so much more meaningful than if we had just went to see the sites ourselves.

Hello, we were a group of 6 (2 adults and 4 teenagers) and we had one bad and one good experience. The bad experience (over over rated and very expensive) was the Olimpic game workout. I think the way the games were organized, the facility, the lack of space to practice, the improvisation (“let’s jump here…no, maybe here, no, no…” ), the lack of quality of materials made it a very unfun, unatractive, boring experience. At the end I felt it was lost money (lots of it). The good experience was with a guy named Nikos, who made us a tour of Streets Art. Even we were tired after the Olimpic FAILURE, Nikos managed to show us interesting art, spoke very pragmatic about it and we spend 3 great hours very nicely. Thanks Nikos! Good value for the money.

Had a lovely private food tour hosted by Josephine on our first day in Athens. A great way to get to see the foodie areas of the city and Greek culture. Josephine was a fantastic guide and her tour was very accomodating of the gluten intolerance in our party.

This tour is a MUST when in Athens! We enjoyed an AMAZING tour with our guide Andreas who was very kind, knowledgable and entertaining. We tasted many delicious foods for the first time and dicovered new shops and restaurants we never heard of even though we've been to Athens before. We learned so much about Greek culture and the amazing delicacies we sampled. We loved every single aspect of the tour and it was such a great way to experience Athens ! Will definitely book again! Thank you so much Andreas and the Alternative Athens team 🙏💕

Great 2-day trip to Delphi and Meteora - THANKS!! Alternative Athens put together an amazing trip from Athens up to Delphi and the Meteora for us. Eleni, our guide, did a terrific job setting the context with fantastic details about cities as we passed them and then within the sites Eleni was amazingly knowledgeable - pulling all of the details together into a single cohesive picture. We are both veg and they easily accommodated the request, not only making sure that we had veg food but also switching one of the side activities to be veg-friendly. It was a great way to spend 2 days.

I highly recommend going on one of their tours. We did the Unexpected Athens Orientation Tour and Christina was a great guide. Was great to hear more about modern Athens and learn about the history and culture of each neighbourhoods we visited. The whole tour was highly engaging and we had way more meaningful conversations you wouldn't normally get through a normal tour group. Can't recommend enough.

We took the food tour, for my opinion it was very expensive. 63 euro and we really almost didn't eat anything. One place we spend over 30 minutes to here about oil and to test 3 kids of oil. I was expecting to have in the tour more greece food, and local places. The places that we ate are: baklava (which is turkish), place to taste 3 kind of oil, coffee, one taverna which the only place that was good, but we were 6 people and the plates were very small, and we stopped to eat suflaki on a place which is familiar in all the Facebook and places.

This tour was a great way to explore some of the less touristed areas of Athens. Our guide Josephine is extremely well qualified to lead the tour and made it an interesting and up informative 3 hours. The pace was easy with lots of discussion about motive, influences, techniques and history.

We had an amazing nightlife tour with Josephine taking us to her favourite craft beer bar, where the personalities were as great as the beer; then we went onto live local music and retsina (it had to be sampled, if just the once); and finally onto a rooftop bar we would have never found. The views across to the Acropolis were fabulous. Time passed so quickly and we made wonderful friends. Can’t recommend enough!

With lots of fun tastings along the way, Andreas our guide talked about the early Greek city states and other Mediterranean food cultures mingling over time, creating the delicious Greek culinary traditions of today. He also spoke on more modern Greek history and the city’s variety of neighborhoods as we went. This tour is a fun way to start exploring Athens.

I highly recommend the Beat the Crowds Acropolis afternoon tour. Our tour guide was Alex, who is an archaeologist. He was amazing! So knowledgeable and passionate about Athens' history. We were very lucky to be the only 2 people on the tour, so it was our own private tour. I learned so much from the tour, and I liked that Alex focused on the importance of mythology, society and civilization, and how it all culminated in the creation of the Acropolis. It wasn't focused on only pointing out the touristy or photo worthy things. I walked away knowing so much more, and having a deeper appreciation of Greek culture. Alex is a fantastic tour guide and was incredibly engaging to listen to. Highly recommended!

The Alternative Athens Mythology tour made my trip! It was well designed and a perfect length. Shout out to our guide Elena. She was very knowledgeable and thoughtful in her presentation of Ancient Athenians. Instead of allowing us to judge the Ancient Greeks for their superstitions, she reminded us that they used mythology to “fill in the gaps” of their understanding. I liked that. Very relatable. Elena had the presence to skillfully guide her group through a sea of humanity, yet exuded a gentleness and compassion, that made us feel well cared for. Thank you for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Private - Best of Ancient and Modern Athens Tour with Vicki. Exceptional tour of ancient and modern Athens. Blended mythology into the architecture and guided us through the main sites in Athens. Enjoyed Greek food and drink. There are so many sites to see that it takes someone with an understanding of all of them to guide you through them. Vicki did an excellent job providing a fun, educational experience without overwhelming us with information.

We took the Alternative Athens tour with Josephine. It was really amazing! We discovered so many things about the city, it's history and the differences among neighborhoods! Josephine was a great host: she was able to create immediately a friendly and familiar environment among the people in the group. Moreover, she was very kind and open to answer to all our questions. I highly recommend this tour to have a felling about the daily life in Athens.

Marcelle and I met up with our tour guide Andreas about two weeks ago during a heat wave in Athens, and we were pleasantly greeted punctually in a large public square as previously planned. We had been in regular contact with him so there was no stress about finding him. Andreas is highly intelligent and has excellent educational credentials and a post doctorate. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of his country, with a passion about his people, a balanced view of the problems they face, and of the concerns his generation has. We had been on several tours already and opted for an unusual type of walking tour through various interconnecting neighborhoods. While walking he provided historical background, socioeconomic and cultural perspectives on the various Athenian communities and the problems they face. He periodically stopped while we hydrated and showed us photos and diagrams illustrating his points and documenting how areas of Athens have changed over the centuries, often from similar vantage points with regards to landmarks. Andreas also provided a didactic background on changes in population makeup and density, Athenian art and architecture, and how they have been affected by war. He had an excellent command of the English language and he was patient in allowing questions and time to stop and rest. We were especially privileged to have a lot of personal time during our two-person four-hour tour. As we neared the end of our experience we felt as if we needed more and he offered and dutifully provided us with photos, additional suggestions for visits, meals, shopping and nightlife. Our tour with Andreas was one of the highlights of our visit to Greece and we enthusiastically recommend contacting him if you plan for an educationally and culturally satisfying tour of his country's capital. He offers other tours outside the city and we will reach out to him for our next visit to this beautiful part of the world. Our impression of Athens was greatly changed by this encounter and we will never forget it. Les S. Marcelle G. USA

Small Group Athens Food Tour - 100% would recommend, if you love Mediterranean food and want to get a really lovely and intimate overview of Greek cuisine from a local! Andreas was an excellent tour guide, gave a lot of history and background of local foods and favorites during this walking food tour of Athens. So many delicious foods to try, both sweet and savory options. I particularly loved the local bakery and olive oil shop, where we had a wonderful review of Grecian olive oil and traditional bread making. Also loved the stop for Greek coffee, and the end for a meze lunch at a classic Taverna. My husband and I were travelling on our honeymoon, had a lovely time chatting with several other couples of all ages, as well as some solo travelers from all over the world.

We booked the Acropolis afternoon tour and a food tour with Alternative Athens. We had such a great experience with both tours! We had Magda for our tour guide for the Acropolis and she was amazing. She had so much knowledge on the Acropolis and made our experience so much better. She was also so knowledgeable about the town and was a great tour guide.

We have been on many food tours in cities around the world, and they are always a great way to get to know a place. The tour led by Paulina was extra special. Our group was only five people, so it felt like a very personal tour. We met Paulina at the designated spot, and got to chat for a few minutes before the others showed up. She was extraordinarily knowledgeable about all facets of Greek culture that we asked about. Any guide can probably tell you about the history of baklava, but she also knew all about the evolution of Greek coffee culture over the past few generations. The changes in how Greek society views the roles of women and men are captured perfectly in the coffee bars. We even got to read the coffee grounds to tell our futures! Of course, we were stuffed to the gills with amazing food by the end of the tour, but we now have a great base of knowledge about Athens for the rest of our stay. Paulina was a great guide, and I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone.
