A MUST DO WHILE IN ATHENS! The views are breathtakingly spectacular- AND really illustrate how HUGE the city of Athens is. There are two ways to get to the top: The Funicular ( Also called cable car by locals, but it's a funicular) or walk. MY TAKE: If you walk to the Funicular like we did, there ARE PLENTY of steps just to get there. If you elect to take a taxi, walking up the hill is probably fun. We decided to pay the 9 Euros round-trip ( cost is 7 Euros one way) to take Funicular. The ride up takes over 2 minutes and was slightly creepy to me, because it's inside a closed tunnel. But the time goes by fast ( I took a video which I will attach). This hill is 277 Meters above sea level and offers a 360 Panoramic veiw of the city- which was truly unbelievable. There is a small church and restaurant on top. This IS DEFINITELY worth the time. The Funicular ran on time ( see attached schedule) and the operator was friendly. In other reviews, some described the employee who sells tickets 🎟 was rude, but she was pleasant the day we went. There is small gift store as well. Highly recommended 👌

It's a bit of a challenge to find this place on foot.🚶 But it is worth the walk, and I walk everywhere when I'm in a new city. I suppose you could take a cab. I've been on 5-6 of these in different parts of the world, but this is the first one that is totally underground 😲 Actually goes up to the top- inside the mountain. There is a cute little gift shop where you buy the tickets. It's 8€💶 for the ride one way. I walked back down.🚶 There is a snack bar and a restaurant at the top. As well as the small monastery. It is quite beautiful inside. But not unique to several others down in the city from that time period. Byzantine I believe. I did not spend a lot of time up at the top by the monastery because of the amount of antennas up there📡. Your cell 🤳🏻 phone will not work📶. I felt my brain🤯 frying ☢️ so I went back down to the snack bar for my views👀

Fun way to get up the hill. A tunnel tram delivers you quickly to the top. We took tram up and walked down stopping at the cafe that’s about 1/2 way down. AMAZING VIEWS FROM TOP.

A great view of Athens from above, especially in the evening

Nothing special about the ride itself, you get crammed in with other people and can get hot and stuffy. Once you’re at the top, it’s very busy, can struggle to find seating as well so if you’re not a fan of huge crowds, then avoid. BUT the view makes up for it. Went for sunset and it was sensational. Luckily you don’t need to pay to visit the hill but it’s just the Cable car you need to pay for.

If the owner ever reads this I'd suggest him/her to change staff. Price for round trip is 7.50 per person (well worth it in my opinion) The cashier (a women) made us pay in cash, she would not accept card at all. And when I was up there with my wife I realized the tickets where from different times and one of them was a child ticket, so these people are obviously stealing the money. I usually don't care but she was particularly rude. Shameful experience for a tourist attraction.

The funicular can be accessed by road or via 300-400m of stairs (not for the faint hearted on a hot Athens day). The funicular takes 2-3 minutes to reach the top of Mount Lycabettus inside the mountain (no views). At the top you get 360 degree views of the city and appreciate the size/density/grandeur of Athens. The journey costs 10 euros for a return trip. At the top is a restaurant and a church.

An enjoyable walk all the way up the neighbourhood from the Olyimpic grounds. Eventually l climbed a very steep stairs and reached the entrance to the funicular. St.Georges chappel is accompanied by a couple of restaurants up there, so enjoy the views over a pint of beer, and then walk all the way down trough a nice path in the wilderness. A good way how to spend the morning.

Great views from the top, we took the cable car up to the top of the hill it was well worth as you get a grey view of the city. If you are limited on time I wouldn't go up here because you can also get s great view of the city from the Acropolis. But if you have time you won't be disappointed and you get a great view of the Acropolis.

The experience once we were up the mountain was great. It was very busy though! So beware (but honestly, every tourist place in Athens is busy!). We stumbled upon the sunset by accident and it was lovely to see it from Mount Lycabettus. If you haven't climbed another hill that day (like we did Acropolis), go there by foot from the Evagelismos metro station. It's a steep hill and in the end there are a LOT LOT LOT of stairs. It may show like 500 meters or so on maps, and trust me, all of that is HILL. We should've taken a bus that day because by the time we got to the cable car, we already felt like we climbed the mountain. Paying 10€ for the round trip of up and down seemed unnecessary. 7.5€ for one way which is a ridiculous price difference. I don't mind the unspectacular ride up. The cable car was in an okay condition.

Definitely the fastest way to get to the top of the hill. Nothing special because you are basically in the dark for 3 mins. Get there early because it can only take about 35 people at a time so fills up fast. Can buy your tickets when you arrive using the machine if you want to use card.

Great view from the top on port of Pireus and Acropolis. You can walk to the top or you can buy ticket for "train" which will take you in several minutes to the top. Restaurants on the top are nothing fancy like advertised of social media.

We decided to visit this attraction to get a unique funicular experience. When we got there regular price of ticket was €10 and for my disabled parents it was €7 euros per person. They had set timing to go up towards the mountain. At the top there was a church plus amazing views and a restaurant. Restaurant was over priced as expected. Church was surreal and views were breath taking. Our way up and down on the funicular only a small portion was lit up and rest was just dark enclosed tunnel. The experience could have been made better by adding different flickering lights for ambience. If all I see is darkness then it’s not worth while going on the funicular.

The cable car is underground, so there won't be a nice view to the top. But the top of the hill is amazing and you can see so much from up there. It's roughly a 20 min walk (uphill) from the Acropolis/Acropoli metro station. If you're taking a TAXI from Acropoli, they will try to extort more money from you. The maximum they should charge you is €10, and say no if they demand more. If they ask for more, demand to be charged by the meter instead. I would recommend getting a one way fare, taking the cable car up to the top of the hill, and walk down to the foot. The views are amazing from all direction. There is a quiet Orthodox church on the top of the mountain too, and a small cafe if you fancy a top of hill meal.

Overly expensive funicular that you have to wait for too long to get into it. At the top, it's practically just restaurants and a tiny church. The view is good, but I don't think it's worth paying for the funicular.

The uphill walk from the metro is quite an achievement. The view of the city is stunning especially sun set and late evening. Over the weekend very crowded and can be tricky to get a good spot to take pics but being patient is the key. Wonderful view to assimilate.

From metro station takes about 20 minutes uphill to the cable car station. R/T cable car 10 Euros. Sun-set view is really nice. Lots of people at the top of the hills and during sunset too many people. Careful for the valuables as Athens is not an safe place. Especially metro from airport to city center not a safe place. Be careful to approach you in the metro. Lycabettus hill worth to visit before sunset.

Awesome panoramic view over Athens, much better than those crowded rooftop bar in the center. The climb is not that difficult. There are bars and restaurant on top of the hill.

Good thing to do in Athens The funicular goes a set distance in a tunnel (ie it's not outside) to get you to a point where there are some fantastic views 360 of Athens. There's quite a few steps after you use the funicular so bear that in mind. Can get a bit crowded too. Nice bar restaurant at the top but id suggest just sticking to drinks as naturally it's overpriced. Can

This cannot be missed. And you need to come at sunset. Watching the sun set over Athens and the Acropolis was an experience I will never forget. Managed to squeeze right to the front of the busiest viewing point and spent an hour watching Athens fall into the night. Incredible, absolutely incredible.

Nice little funicular in the middle of the city. Fantastic views on top, but expect to climb ~50 steps to get to the very top. The funicular itself is in a dark tunnel, so there is no need to be first as you won't see anything during the ~3 minute ride (claustrophobics beware). There are a few parking spots outside as well, but quite limited. The ride costs €10 both ways per person and goes every 30 minutes.

Very beautiful sunset, however it gets very busy up there during the popular times. Cable car up was a no-brainer as it was a very hot day. Tickets can be bought on site, either by card using the machine or cash at the register

  • 3/5 Emily T. 1 year ago on Google
Not much to do at the top. The view is phenomenal, but the ride up does not have any view. If you’re here just for the view, probably best to add in a coffee or meal at the top to enjoy it a bit longer.

Lycabettus Hill is one of the best front views of the Acropolis and gives a very good bird's eye view over Athens right till the ocean. Come here for sunset, but be prepared for crowds during that time. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and the twinkling lights come on thereafter. The cable car is the best option to get here and runs pretty frequently during this time. You can get tickets directly at the station office. We did not have dinner at the restaurant at the top, but that's also a good option if you want to combine your views with a meal.

If you want a quick ride up on the hill, you can choose the cable car. The ticket costs around 7 one way or return 10€. Safe and clean. The hill is one of the most spectacular places to enjoy the amazing view of Athens, with restaurants as well as a small chapel built at the top.

The view and atmosphere is amazing. My wife ordered the linguini with lobster. She really enjoyed it though the eggplant in the sauce made it a bit sweet for me. I had the rack of lamb and unfortunately it came out medium well instead of the standard medium rare. Definitely worth it one time for the view alone

The best way to get up the mountain (unless you like taking an uphill walk). It was a quick trip up the mountain. Each car has 4 seats in it for sitting. The cost is 10 Euros for a round trip ticket. We went an hour before sundown and there was no line to get up. On the way down, after everyone viewed the sunset.

Cramped, Stuff and Hot: Although the views at the top are magnificent, the funicular ride itself is nothing to write home about. First of all they only go when they fill up all the seats so you have to wait a long time in the heat. The carriages are stuffy with no fans. The ride itself is not outdoors so you don't see anything going up - you go through a tunnel. Once again it is very stuffy and they cram people in every carriage. It's a short ride so that's good and it saves you from walking to the top.

This was really fun to go up the funicular. The views at sunset are amazing although it was really busy

Top view of Athens. A must do at sunset time. Climbing the steps I'd advise only for fit people.😂 Better take a Uber if you are not ready for a workout.

The cable car ride is very short. In my personal opinion it’s much better to go on foot to the top of the hill so that you can enjoy the beautiful nature and the Incredible view of the city, especially at sunset I enjoyed a Fredo Cappuccino while looking over the city.

  • 5/5 Will C. 1 year ago on Google
The funicular is a convenient means of transport to get to the top of the hill. The view up there is amazing. You can see the whole city including the Parthenon.
