Awesome scenery, but watch out for the shady locals. We were camping at one of the backpack shelters overnight and had two backpacks stolen as we were loading our car. We reported it and they said it happens all the time. Keep all valuables locked and under supervision, even in the campgrounds. Or better yet, camp somewhere else!

Stayed at shelter number 1. It was perfect for someone with pets or children. I was about a half mile from my car in case anything were to happen. The trails are beautiful and well maintained! Such a good time!

Wide variety of parks, trails (hike and bike), and waterways to kayak. Favorite hiking is Zilmer (wide, not overgrown in summer). Kayak around Mauthe Lake and the MKE river. Parnell tower for the views. Ice Age Trail Center is also a must see.

Had so much fun out here! We just pulled off on the side of the road and found a cute section for the dogs to run free β€οΈπŸ™

Wonderful hike along the trails! I'm still questioning what's in the tree?

The park was beautiful, clean bathrooms and well cared for campsites. My wish is that people be respectful of others. We had neighbors whose dogs barked every time one walked by, the dogs even visited our campsite a few times, and then the owners were constantly yelling at the dogs. And they had crying babies and many visitors. Not the get away weekend we hoped for, but the rest of the park was a great getaway from our neighbors.

I love hiking. This hike was pretty fun. It's a tad hilly. The dogs enjoyed the hike too. It was a nice fall hike. Was pretty. Most of the leaves are on the ground. Peaceful area. Mindful hiking if your into that. I recommend going here!

Great Camp ground. Hiked out on the Ice Age Trail. Went in April and only the pit toilets were open, but they were the cleanest pit toilet bathrooms ever. Even with standing water around our site, there were no bugs or mosquitoes. Thank you April. $6.00 a bundle for firewood. The machine doesn't give change. Bring enough $5 and $1 bills. You can only buy 1 bundle from the dispenser at a time.

I've been trying to finish the trail around the lake, I've been unsuccessful each time due to flooding on the trail. I will finish one day!

I backpacked with my 5 kids to the hiking shelter B6 in the Zellmer loop of the northern Kettle Moraine. We went at the start of July. Pluses: were that it is a short hike in from the trailhead-less than a mile- so for a first try backpacking for the kids it wasn't an overwhelming thought. We saw deer, frogs, Lunar moth other cool bugs, and blackberries were ripening along trail. The campsite had a spring next to it- it is recommended to still treat it though. The campsite had firepit, pit toilet, and a shelter. Here are the down sides that we laughed off as story plot items- mosquitoes and deer flies oh my. Be ready to deal with those. Also, the hiking shelter...bring a tent for sure. I brought a 2.5 man tent thinking most of us will just use the bench in shelter...at night time out came the mice- cute as they were, it meant that 5 people slept in the little tent and I slept in hammock swatting mosquitoes all night. The shelter also smelled like, well wet mouse droppings. So, overall I am glad we went but I don't think it was good enough to do a second time in the future and obviously I would be better prepared and hopefully you can be if you have read my review.

It is simply amazing at this time of year. I already have over 10 lb of black raspberries from the forest and about a pound of red raspberries but they're still ripening up right now. The blackberries are going to be ripening up in about 3 weeks maybe. Just walk the trails they are everywhere. And of course look just off the trails because you'll spot the berries when you're not looking. And if you're lucky walking along some trails you may even find cherry plum trees. They are delicious.

Winter season ice age trail hiking from Mauthe Lake

  • 3/5 Kevin S. 1 year ago on Google
This post is in error, review is of parnell tower (I think), photos are of Mauthe Lake. I'll fix asap. Lots of stairs. Of course stairs up the tower, but there are a lot of stairs leading to the tower. Not good for hip, knee or back issues. I'd prefer a hill VS the stairs personally. Good view of trees. Probably best in fall. We stopped in spring so mostly just bare trees.

Not easy walking terrain. Lots of hunters during gun season.

  • 5/5 Joseph R. 2 years ago on Google
Great trails, camping, and views. I would definitely recommend bringing a decent water filter or jugs of water if you plan to camp at Mauthe Lake though. The water available on site is pretty hard to drink.

The hike is quite pretty in the fall. The tower has great views. The foliage is top notch throughout the hike. If you have a hot wife like me, it's a great place to spend a few hours. Now for some beef: The state needs to stop hiring socialist park rangers who don't know how to do the most simple of things like inform visitors where parking is prohibited. Very poor customer service. In fact, the folks hired by the state should be chloroformed to sleep and tazed in the nuts to be awoken. Then they should spend the remainder of their careers hand cleaning the pit toilets.

Very calm and lots of cool views. Gives the feel of the mountains without actually being in them.

Great park! They have lots of sites available for camping so even showing up last minute we feel safe to get a good site. Very easy to book Wisconsin state parks right on their website and the parks in this state are beautiful.

My gf and I camped here in June 2023 as a last minute reservation in the 900s camp site. We were quite impressed with the facilities made available to campers: (a) fairly private and expansive camp sites, (b) well maintained grass, (c) plentiful water filling stations, vault toilets, flush toilets, and showers, (d) ice bags for sale onsite, and (e) a vending machine firewood machine which is $6/cord. All in all, a good experience. We did the Zillmer Yellow Loop hiking trail one day. Not a lot of wildlife, but a good 2-2.5 hour stroll through nature.

Beautiful park with tons of stuff to do. The Ice Age trail is always cool to learn about and explore!!! 99% of the park is dog friendly (on-leash), and Pike Lake is warm and perfect this time of year. Our entire family had a blast and as long as you pack a lunch, you can make an entire day out of this adventure!!!

Been here many times but this was my first at one of the group sites in Green Bush. Did not disappoint. Trails for hiking and biking are much more woodsy over here. There was even some forest space next to the open area where we set up some hammocks. Definitely coming back.

Really enjoyed this campground. Two beaches within walking distance. Private campsites. Not too rowdy but also not too quiet like a library.

Beautiful weather for hiking today. Nice trails, take a walking stick as some hills are Rocky and can be a little challenging going down. Mostly flat with mild hills and the occasional steeper hill.

My first time to northern kettle. I did a two day 40 miles section of the Ice Age Trail. Colors were popping. Trails were nicely maintained. All good.

It is pathetic that they allow pets in the campground but offer zero pet friendly lake access for dogs anywhere around long lake. Highly disappointed they can’t accommodate families with dogs

The trails are not well marked or well maintained. The scenery is beautiful. The lake is clean. The beach is nice. All in all it is not a bad place to visit.

Well kept trail. Wide enough, and always clean. Never had any issues on this trail. Great trail, 1 mile to rustic road.

Campers are out of control this year. Loud, disrespectful, fireworks, drinking, screaming after 11 PM. To many people at a camp site. Not just one camp site. Do not plan on sleeping until after midnight. Did I say loud. I felt very unsafe with the activities that were going on in the evening. Not family friendly.

We learned about this place from another camper last year and decided to check it out this year (2020). It is a quiet beautiful campsite with a close-by beach. Very clean and well-maintained with fairly good spaced-out campsites. The surrounding landscape was very charming and relaxing. You may blame Wisconsin for such typical beauties:). It is now added to our list of campsites for future visits. Note: We happened to be there in August and were met with countless annoying mosquitoes! Just be prepared in advance :)

So many places to go, 2 main campgrounds on lakes with beaches, 1 equestrian campground and a few remote hike in campsites. Trails galore, Ice Age National Scenic trail runs N-S through whole park. Tons to see and do.
