Rangitoto is the youngest and largest of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field, having formed in an eruption about 600 years ago. It was set aside as a recreation reserve in 1890 and became a favourite spot for daytrippers. In addition, Rangitoto and neighbouring Motutapu Islands were officially declared pest-free with both islands. For the ferry schedule, only one outbound ferry can be selected, and multiple return ferry for chosen. If you buy the ticket from the Fullers360 website, you can have approximately 10% off the ticket price. Furthermore, you can still book an overnight bach on the island. Today's track is the Rangitoto summit track, which will cost you an hour and 2.5 kilometers to the viewpoint. There are some attractions that can be reached through the forks along the track, such as Islington bay, Wilson's park track, and Lava cave.

Fantastic hiking, the caves are great and the view from the summit is really good. The hike is not too long if you take the direct track but it is quite steep. Don't be an idiot like us, BRING WATER, and more than one bottle. There's no fresh water, food supplies etc on the island.

The summit track is awesome. The crater at the top is beautiful. And the best view of Auckland city you can get. Highly recommended and perfect for beginner hikers

Totally worth the ferry ticket. An amazing and unique landscape, the views of the crater at the top are really cool. Great views of Auckland city and the surrounding areas from the top too.

Beautiful easy enough hike to the top of the old volcano. We did it with 5 and 7 year olds. Just make sure to pack plenty of snacks and water. Comfy shoes are a must. Even though a lot of the track from Islington to the summit had tree coverage it can get pretty hot and humid out there. Well marked and maintained walkways, but some of the rocks can be slippery underfoot.

A straightforward but beautiful hike. Easy enough that toddlers were walking up the trail as well. The lava rocks soak up heat, so definitely bring water as you’ll be sweating. Great views at the summit and not too crowded on a weekday.

A not too difficult hike to the summit which delivers beautiful views of the island. The summit is not too high up which makes the track up easy but the views may not be as impressive as other locations with higher summits even on the main island. A great way to get some exercise going up the island with a well marked and mostly well paved trails at every corner and turn.

Great day out. A short ferry ride and then options of walking straight to the summit and back or longer more scenic routes. MacKenzie Bays little beach is an unexpected delight after the tough terrain of volcanic rock from the summit. I hope that DoC has a plan for the serious wasp problem at the summit.

It's a great track for beginners. It's a 2 - 2.5 hours trek up and down. The track is through a ancient lava field. On reaching the top, you could see the Auckland city, which is amazing. The trek is also kids friendly.

Awesome track, breathtaking views. However I prefer the tracks along the coast of Rangitoto Island over the summit as the summit track is harder and the actual track is more boring. The actual summit of the island has great views though. The coastline tracks are my favourite.

Absolutely a must do. I loved every minute of getting to the summit and lava caves. The walk is just so enjoyable. Would do it again. Great track well marked.

A good walk but not wheelchair friendly. You need a physical fit to get to the top. Certain parts of the track is slippery and uneven. View from the top is great you can see some old military facilities.

Small rocks on all walkways make it slippery under foot. Roads are poorly marked. Erotion due to rain/floods on Rongitoto summit track. Dongas are formed for about 2 km No fresh water on island. Pitt toilets smelly. Last ferry at 4pnm. Not able to do all routes on the island due to poor road conditions that slow you down. NOT an easy climb. Heavy on the feet.

Great and quiet place, keep in mind that there are no services at all

A nice day out for the family. Some parts were quite steep, so a challenge for the younger kids (kids were aged 7, 8, 12, 16), but certainly do-able. It was a very overcast day which was actually awesome - not too hot especially as much of the track is in the open.

Great tramps through this volcanic landscape. Fun birds too. Additional crater rim loop and offshoot lava caves.

I loved Rangitoto island. The tracks are quite easy, with the only exception of the costal trail that could be tricky if you have not boots because of the many unstable rocks. Take your time to reach the summit and enjoy an amazing view of the bay. My suggestion is to leave the island with the last ferry at 4:00 pm.

πŸ‘ We have visited most of the Vineyard's on Waiheke and this is up there with the best in terms of quality of food. The location is nice and pleasant and is beautiful on a sunny day, but the location does not have the sweeping views of some of the other vineyards. Back to the food, it was delicious an...
