A beautiful church standing as a testament of history built on top of an older church not until recently unveiled. Beautiful architecture and a great place for prayer and peace.

This church will surprise you in many ways. It's an eighteenth century church that was built on top of a much earlier one from the 4th century. The much older church had been forgotten for hundreds of years, but a bombardment that took place during the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) unveiled the ancient church when a bomb bore a hole through the newer church's floor. It is possible to visit the older church during the day through a separate entrance to the left of the newer church's main door.

The Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George is the oldest church in Beirut, small in size, but of impressive beauty, an essential visit if you are visiting the city. Although the first construction was destroyed by an earthquake in the year 551, it was rebuilt and suffered serious damage again after another earthquake in 1759. Finally rebuilt with the current plan in 1772. In the Lebanese civil war it suffered damage and vandalism and was restored to the current state in 2003. As a curiosity, there are images representing Christ that were "shot" and the shots remain in the frescoes, they were left as proof of how far human beings go in their madness.

The temple was destroyed many times over the centuries. The church reopened its doors on December 15, 2003, after the last maintenance work. Today, the damage caused by the explosion in August 2020 in the city is being repaired.

(Translated by Google) Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral: It is a church that is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Bishop in Beirut and its regions. It is the oldest church in the city, located near Nejmeh Square in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. • This church was built on the ruins of the Church of "Anastasy" by the decision of the Byzantine Emperor "Theodosius II", and the work was carried out by the Bishop of Beirut "Astathius" in 450 AD. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 551 AD and rebuilt during the twelfth century. • In the year 1759 AD, it was destroyed by another earthquake that struck the region, to be rebuilt again with one altar dedicated to “Saint George” but it collapsed after 3 years. It was rebuilt in its current form in 1772 AD and became three massacres. • In the modern era, it was burned and destroyed during the Lebanese Civil War, but after the end of the war, exploration and exploration campaigns were started, then they were restored and opened in 2003. Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan bishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut and its dependencies. It is the city's oldest extant church: it has been built over the disappeared Anastasi Romano-Byzantine Cathedral. Wikipedia

An abandoned church in Khandak El Ghamik Area (what is known the green line)... Due to 1975 civil war all Christians fled from the neighborhood... It's now being sided by two new towers by some capitalist... Bordering the church from both sides

Almost 250 year old, this gem of byzantine architecture and iconography stands as a witness of past time and cultures that have been present in Lebanon. Its amazingly well restored interiors show an extreme richness like all byzantine art and the underground museum reveals much about the history of the old city that lies underneath the current Beirut. Must See!

Historically interesting. Old church built over an ancient one whose remains can be seen. Successfully restaured after the damage done during the war. Very attractive wall paintings inside, nicely lit. Beautiful old gold colored screen, iconostasis, with icons.

The most beautiful of the churches in Beirut. Not only the church itself is beautifully decorated, with paintings in every wall and in the ceiling, but there is also a chapel and a museum in the same complex. The chapel in the back is pretty, simple and gives a relaxed feeling. I felt I could spend hours there. An oasis in the turmoil that is a day walking through Beirut. The museum under the church, which is accessible from the left side is small but really interesting and a well maintained. It costs 5 thousand and is worth it. There you can see ruins of other ages in the same site. So it gives you the idea of how long has this soil been used by different civilizations.
