The Al-Omari Grand Mosque was originally the Church of Saint John and was built by the crusaders in the 12th century. It was converted into the city's Grand Mosque by the Mamluks in 1291. Damaged during the Lebanese Civil War, the mosque's refurbishment was completed in 2004. The Al-Omari Grand Mosque was originally the old church of Saint John the Baptist, built by the crusaders in 1150 over the site of Roman imperial baths. Similar Romanesque churches with triple apses were built in Tyre and Tartus, using recuperated material such as Roman columns and capitals. In 1291, the Mamluks captured Beirut and converted the church into a mosque. It was renamed Al-Omari Mosque in the name of Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, it soon became known as "Jami’ Al-Kabir" (the Great Mosque). Its Mamluk-style entrance and minaret were added in 1350. During the French Mandate the façade was redesigned by adding a riwaq, or portico, and integrating the mosque's main entrance into the new colonnade of Maarad Street. Badly damaged during the Civil War (1975-1990), the mosque's refurbishment was completed in 2004 in a way that reveals the building's origins and history. A second minaret was built on the northwest corner of a new colonnaded courtyard. Beneath it, an ancient cistern with Roman columns and stone vaults has been preserved. 1150: The crusaders built the original Church of Saint John. 1291: The Mamluks recaptured Beirut and converted the church into a mosque. 1350: The Mamluk-style entrance and minaret of the mosque were added. 1975-1990: During the Civil War, the mosque was badly damaged . 2004: The mosque's refurbishment was completed in a way that reveals the building's origin and history.

(Translated by Google) We are a generation in which the friend was righteous and the earth had its sanctity. We gathered early to go to it and come back quickly so that we would be late for our school duties. The words of the parents were holy and respect for our holy ancestors. We learned respect for the neighbor and the right of neighborhood. How sad I am for those generations that did not know and did not enjoy what we lived and enjoyed. In 1291, the Mamluks captured Beirut and converted the church into a mosque. It was named the Omari Mosque to commemorate the Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab, then became known as the Great Mosque. (Translated by Google) The Great Omari Mosque stands in the center of the commercial district of Beirut since the Islamic conquest during the Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab. In addition to being the largest mosque in the heart of the capital, it remains the first witness to the history of Beirut and its centuries-old history. In the era of the Mamluks, the mosque of Fattouh al-Islam was called the victory of Islam, when the Mamluks brought the Crusaders out of the country. In the Ottoman era, it was called the "Prophet Yahia" mosque, due to two possibilities, either in relation to what it was called when it was a Crusader cathedral or by the presence of a part of the remains of the Prophet Yahya. It was built on a steel cage by the Sultan Abdul Hamid Al Thathi year 1305 AH (1888). The large age group has several entrances to the various streets around it to facilitate people's access to it. Its main door overlooks the Attarine market and has a second door overlooking the blacksmith market. It also has a third door overlooking Wigan Street, the electric tramway street built in the early 20th century. The Great Mosque in Beirut was the main mosque of the city, where national and religious ceremonies of official and popular character are held.
