Gorgeous lake with very good hiking and trekking routes around. The Herrenchiemsee Palace is on this lake itself along with other palace islands. Closest train station to reach the lake is Prien am Chiemsee. There's a pretty good and reasonable boat service to/from the islands. Highly recommended for day trips to walk/hike around too! Top place!

On a rainy summer evening , we visited chiemsee lake. This was a spontaneous lake while returning from Salzburg to Munich. This is underrated place of Munich. Intercity train between Munich and Salzburg stops at “Prien am Chiemsee” station. Lake is 20 mins walking from station (or you get mini train till 5 PM). Lake is absolute beauty. You may easily lost into the nature and enjoy your time here. Chiemsee was a prince and this lake is third largest lake in Germany. Recommended to visit.

Small village, amazing food and cruising around the lake with Mountain View!!! Sounds like a perfect short trip. Not really far from Munich but a nice place. Coming by car and train: both are possible. The cruising timing is also flexible.

Everything about this place is amazing. It’s wide and you have many visiting spots. Best place in Bavaria. You can have a nice longgggggggggg walk, have a short trip in vintage train, drink and eat food all at one place. Finally sit on the Chiemsee walking bridge and enjoy the sunset 🌅 view.

One of the beautiful and biggest lakes in Bavaria close to Munich and Rosenheim. Chiemsee is a place which has lot to offer starting from boat rides, ferris, vintage train, barbeque, food and as a surprise a small water park too. Visiting this place with a group of friends along with a packed lunch is the best package one can go with. The boat rides are very nice along with manual and electric powered and that too not so expensive. For pedal boat it is around 12 Euros per hour and motor it is around 20.

One of the most beautiful lakes of Bavaria. A well planned 1 day trip should suffice. Basically you will be visiting two islands in a single ticket . It is a very picturistic place. Loved it!!

Taking a train then bus then walking then a fairy! Its the ultimate summer experience =p Herren Insel or island is the largest then the Frauen Insel then the third one (can not remember its name) The fairy takes you from an island to the other one (depending on the fairy plan you book) Its really about the castle (on Herren Insel) and the church (on the Frauen Insel) But more importantly, the fairy ride is just something else, The scenery is absolutely stunning.

The Chiemsee was formed, like many other pre-alpine lakes, at the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago from a hollow carved out by a glacier (a Zungenbecken). Originally the lake covered an area of almost 240 km2, which is about three times its present area. Within 10,000 years its area had shrunk to around 80 km2. Before 1904 the water level was lowered by about a metre. As a result, large areas of dry land were reclaimed. There are three main islands on the lake: Herreninsel ("gentlemen's island"), the largest, with an area of 238 hectares; Frauenchiemsee, 15.5 ha, also called Fraueninsel ("ladies' island"); and uninhabited Krautinsel ("cabbage island"), 3.5 ha, called this name because in the Middle Ages it was cultivated with cabbages and other vegetables.

Worth day trip from Munich with dogs. There are plenty possibilities to rent a small electric boat and move around. The place is dog friendly as well, renting the boat with 2 dogs was no problem. There are also several restaurants nearby.

    - Nice view, nice atmosphere - Easy to travel Cons - too many mosquitos if you walk around the lake. - Many places work only with cash

Wonderful lake to visit, along with the female monastery. It is crowded in July that I ve visited, but worth it. Definitely try the fish sandwiches. Swimming, erm not sure I would do it again, maybe deeper in the water if there was access to a boat. Loved the ducks and other birds in the lake, a joy to see.

Beautiful place. Late minute change of plans bought us here. Mosquito heaven was a big downside for me.
