Quick Summary Great food, ambiance and service. The best steaks in Bakersfield! Try to get street parking around the area; the lot next to the restaurant is a paid lot Food- 5 stars Escargot- this was decent. I would order a different appetizer in the future Ribeye- this was divine. The steak was so tender, juicy, and fatty. Ordered the baked potato and Caesar salad along with it, and they were very delicious as well. My go-to steak order Filet- this was very delicious as well. I'm usually a fan of fattier cuts (e.g. ribeyes) but this filet was very juicy and tender Rack of lamb- this was cooked perfectly as well. They even lollipop the lamb as well at request. Very good Veal- this was cooked perfectly as well. I'm not usually a huge fan of veal but the flavor and tenderness was great here Dessert- we tried all 3 of their house desserts. The cheesecake was standard, but the other 2 desserts (Malva pudding and South African Cape Dutch) were very good and I highly recommend it The bread was very good as well. They had melted butter which was great Drinks- 5 stars We tried the Manhatten and Apple-tini and they were very delicious. The drinks are strong here and I do like that they ask for your liquor brand of choice here Service- 5 stars The service was solid throughout. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout and the owner/chef greeted us at the end of the meal as well. Terrific experience throughout Ambiance- 5 stars It's an interesting vintage steakhouse vibe in an alleyway (e.g it looked really ghetto from the outside, but transformed into a classy steakhouse when you entered). Really enjoyed the playlist in the background as well Bottom Line Great food, drinks and service. The ribeye was the most memorable dish of the night. Try to get here early or late to snag free street parking!

Our server was amazing. She cared so much about the history of the building and shared every detail She knew. She showed as pictures of the old card room. Which was awesome 👌. Food was amazing. Maybe a little salty. But still awesome!

My meal was nothing short of spectacular! It was like I took a trip back in time to where the world was a much simpler place. From the moment I walked into the horseshoe bar to the last bite of dessert. Every detail was thought out. The drinks were perfectly handcrafted. Each appetizer was carefully crafted. My salad was next level. My salmon was cooked to perfection and my dates fillet was cooked to perfect temperature. They have an events space that I already have future plans for with family and birthday events. You really can’t go wrong with anything this establishment has to offer. Thank you for a wonderful trip back in time and an even better meal. Didn’t have time for many photos but here are the two we took. Hurry just make the reservation go and have the best meal of your life.

I had the most amazing birthday dinner here last night! I can't thank Beth enough for making the night so special. The atmosphere was classy, the decor gives it an artistic feel. The food was to die for! A quote from my brother after his first bite of lamb "this is utopia." 😂 Definitely the best lamb we have ever had! I had the Block Filet and my mom had the Brandy Bleu Filet, I cant remember the last time I had a steak that was so melt-in-your-mouth. Especially with the brandy bleu filet, the strong and rich flavors go so well with the delicate filet. And it came out the perfect medium rare! I'm a stickler about my cook on my steak so that was just awesome. The pudding was super yummy too! Not overly sweet so I was able to eat the whole thing after a big meal. I'm so happy I chose Horse in the Alley for my birthday dinner, definitely will come here again for another special occasion!

If you would like a great place for an intimate dinner with your spouse or group, this is the place for you. The service from when you walk in the door is 5 Stars. The menu and the food is the best you can get in this town of ours. Every time we come here we know exactly what to expect and they never disappoint us at all.

The dessert, Malva pudding, (bread pudding in a creamy sauce) deserves all the stars! We came here on a friend’s recommendation. The appetizers were okay. The stuffed mushrooms which were very sweet and the escargot was all butter. I ordered the steak blue cheese salad and my husband ordered the block filet. I tasted my friend’s shrimp pasta and it was amazing. It came out steaming hot and the right texture. However, I was disappointed in the steak especially for a steakhouse. It was tender but SO salty and overpowered with pepper. The service was incredibly friendly but slow. Took us quite a while to get our food and drinks. The ambience was nice. I would come back to only stick to the pasta and dessert.

This is an amazing restaurant. The food is by far the best I’ve ever had. The service is top notch. The spacing of the courses is perfect. You definitely don’t feel rushed to finish one thing before your meal comes. I had a steak with peppercorn sauce that was to die for. It melted in my mouth. The mixed vegetables were perfectly cooked. The atmosphere when you’re in the restaurant is very romantic. This is the perfect place for a romantic night out.

We need 100 more stars for this restaurant. Tucked away in an awesome area of downtown. The building is from the mid 1800s. Inside is a throwback to the art deco Era. Beautiful horseshoe bar. Dining area with large cushy booths. Service impeccable. But the food...off the hook. Bakersfield just got probably the best restaurant ever. The owner/chef made it a point to meet us and chat. Kudos to this great restaurant. If you haven't been there, go. You won't be disappointed. Time number 2, an utter failure. Bad excuses for terrible service. Horrible food. Unfortunately we will never go there again, and certainly tell everyone we know to never go there. Too expensive. They claim fine dining? Not even. Too expensive for Bakersfield. Good Luck before you close down.

This restaurant is the best in Bakersfield and one of the best I've eaten at. We celebrated the holidays with my wife's parents, her sister and husband. I had the rack of lamb and the others had various steaks; New York and Fillets. Everything was outstanding. The cocktails were great (Old Fashion and wine). My father-in-law is 92 and on oxygen, the staff took their time in helping him to the table and securing his oxygen tank. This is an interesting restaurant in that the entrance in in an alley and basically unmaked, kind of like a "speak-easy". Just find the red door and your in! Again, thanks to the owner/Chef and all the staff for ensuring a great evening. I apologize for not remembering the names of all of those that took such great care of us. I live in LA, but we are already planning on making the trip for my next birthday.

This place is absolutely amazing. The ambiance, was slow and romantic at the beginning of the night, then shifted to a more fun night life, while still maintaining a soft elegance. The service was next to none, a very intimate experience thanks to our server Gilbert. My steak was perfectly cooked and delicious. My fiancé's surf and turf was mouthwatering. Save room for sweets because the house dessert, was decadent, and quite polarizing in my opinion, delicious. We will definitely be returning.

MASON n MATHEW are a Huge reason for these 5 STARS!! These gentlemen are class acts and make the dining experience that much better. Beth and Jason....LOVE your establishment. It is my wife and I's favorite date night. We WILL see you again soon. Atmosphere is very romantic and intimate. Food is delicious to put it lightly. I had to order a bowl of the chicken soup because a cup was not enough. Prime rib is always perfect. The salmon was amazing. Thank you guys for making our Valentine's wonderful. With Gratitude John-Michael

A true steakhouse experience, just like the old days. Came to town with no particular plan but the highlight of the trip was a visit to the Horse in the Alley! Saw the reviews and said, "I got to check this out." Well, it is better than the amazing reviews. We arrived early and the helpful bartender got us a drink and had us sit down for the 45 seconds until our server Gill invited us to our table. Great ambiance in the main room! Quickly the real action took place. Gill demonstrated what a true professional server can do in the right environment. His attentive service and attention to detail were only part of the experience. He let us into his world and showed us how he learned his craft. After the delivery of our most amazing food (truly out of this world) we were greeted by the owner and chef who wanted our honest feedback and ideas for an even better experience. I guess he listened to all his previous customers because we had no one suggestion as to how to better this amazing experience. In a 1-10 scale I would give it a 15! Highly recommended!!! Will be your best memory of Bakersfield if you are passing through.

Magnificent and cozy place. Samantha was among the highlights of our visit. The service food and atmosphere were amazing. I would've never thought that by looking at the location I would find this hidden gem. Highly recommend it to anyone who values quality and fine dining.
