My dad and I just visited and we were both very impressed. We could have easily spent many hours here, but felt that two was about right given our timing constraints. Most of the museum is outdoors, with buildings that you can peek into. They have many kid-oriented signs along with the standard adult-oriented signs.

I was surprised and impressed by the depth and breadth of this collection. I moved to Kern County in 1996 but didn’t visit until 2022. Don’t wait! It’s great for all ages, something for everyone. There are several great exhibits covering the history of Kern County, it’s pioneers, influencers (think Bakersfield Sound and Cesaer Chavez), lifestyle and industry.

This place is awesome! I absolutely recommend it. It's totally worth the money. Each exhibit is unique and lots of fun. Definitely stop by the church if you're feeling hot. You'll thank me later. This place is so huge that we ran out of time. We'll definitely return to see the rest!

Their event for Halloween 🎃 this year was great! Not too long of lines to get candy, not too scary for the younger kids, tickets were five dollars each and five dollars more to get a bag for candy. No buckets allowed since they give you the bags and you have to pay per person to get candy. Most of the museums attractions were open to view and walk through. There were some vendors there for food, coffee, popcorn and tacos. They had a projector playing a Halloween 👻 movie and they had some bounce houses for the kids. Parking was a little intense but we ended up getting super lucky with a good spot. Highly recommend for next year if you want to do something other than stay in or go house to house.

I loved it! It was like going back in time. The weather was nice as we walked around and took our time looking at everything and reading the history for each display. There was plenty of parking and it wasn't crowded at all.

Highly recommend. Very informative plaques in front of numerous historic village buildings full of artifacts from Bakersfield 's past. Beautiful displays and an enthusiastic docent. Watch the movie in the exhibit hall first!

I love this place!! Best place to visit - you could spend hours and hours here!! The coolest collection of local history- both indoor and outdoor exhibits of great interest to All ages! Get here early so you can spend the whole day here! The country music building was especially cool 😎 they had historic outfits and instruments on display! Great way to get some exercise and learn about the history of the area- they even have fossils of sabertooth tigers found at the nearby tar pits! Go here! You won't regret it.

We went for Ronald Mcdonald's house walk for kids with Texas Roadhouse. There were Starwars costume actors that put in lots of effort as well as other this to do. It was so well done and a lot of fun. Very well maintained and clean. I hadn't been in 20 years since my last visit. Great way to spend a morning or evening and see or community's history

The Kern County Museum is a wonderful place to walk around and take in the wonderful history of Bakersfield. From the iconic Clock Tower to the old schoolhouse, it forms a comfortable village atmosphere that you will want to visit time after time. The green trees protect you from the valley's heat and adds to the whole experience. It's a great place to get outside and exercise.

Great museum for a place as culturally and economically decimated as Bakersfield. The exhibits start in prehistoric times and tell you everything you need to know about the area, up thru the oil boom that put Bakersfield on the map for goldrushers to Dust Bowl refugees. Added bonus: Merle Haggard's house is here. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed seeing the various time period house's and businesses that were moved here. Really enjoyed the country music building with the show biz clothing, boots, and Billings. Have a tribute to Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, native Bakersfielders.

Very unique place. Lots of stuff to see. Great place to get out & walk. Take the kids & get them outside & off technology. (Work off that pent up exercise) Great learning experience in a safe environment. Friendly people & very low cost.

Expansive self paced museum that has a lot of history. I like being able to go at my leisure and read the information for each building. My daughter (4) likes to pretend we live in the buildings and we play along as we go. Lots of ground to cover and you gotta make it exciting for little ones. If you like history and old buildings this is the place for you. We usually end up here when the lori brock center is closed. I like their neon signs and being able to glimpse the life of people long gone.

Kern county museum is always cool to attend when you have an event you are going to but if you have the spare time to return and look at all the rich history there is it's very rewarding! They also have a really nice area to engage your littles at their discovery center! Absolutely love the Kern museum i have taken my children several times, i myself have gone maybe about 100 times since childhood and I still love it. Great family place to enjoy with the children.

This the second time I have been there. It's amazing. A couple of things that were new is a gallery that has pictures of the towns music history which is really nice. They have a New Bakersfield Sound exhibit that just opened and is a wonderful tribute to that music and they have Merle Haggard's actual Childhood home there. Great place.

Our City's heritage all in one place! This place is well run and fun to visit. Any event here is worth attending, and they have a children's center with an interactive experience. My favorite parts were the oil exhibit and the skulls in the main building ! Something for everyone, and nostalgia for Kern county.

The Kern County Museum is an excellent place to visit for those interested in learning about the history of California's Central Valley. Located in Bakersfield, this museum houses several exciting and educational exhibits that cover various aspects of local history. From Native American artifacts to early pioneer life, visitors can explore the past through interactive displays and engaging activities. The museum also offers a variety of special events throughout the year, so there's always something new to discover! One highlight of Kern County Museum is its permanent exhibit on oil production in California's Central Valley. This exhibit features original equipment used by pioneers during the early days when oil and photographs provided insight into what life was like back then. In addition, several interactive components allow visitors to learn more about how these wells were operated and information on current operations! It's obvious to see why this museum has earned such positive reviews from locals and tourists alike; it truly offers something for everyone who visits its doors! So whether you're looking for an educational experience or want some fun family entertainment - you will be satisfied with what Kern County Museum has waiting inside its walls!

Safe Halloween had always been a family tradition for my kids now I just took my grandsons for the first time and I thank all of you who are still keeping this event afloat. But I also seen that the community needs to help more for the kids!!!

Great ! Very interesting oil part. The Indian part could be improved with a hut reconstruction or a real boat. Details on the social and cultural life of the Indian, not just artifacts would be great also.

It is more like a historical park with lots of historical buildings with old furniture moved/rebuilt there. There is also a small museum with interactive exhibits about petroleum exploration and a small kids museum. We spent around 3 hours going through everything. Kids had a great time peaking into each house to see what it looked like in the old times. We were there on a Saturday but no one was at the ticket window so we got in for free.

The museum displays a lot of historical houses and shops, and was a great outdoor activity to bring our children to see what life was like during the turn of the century.

Last year I bought the annual pass and I have no regrets. I love coming here with my kids just to walk around and have a nice peaceful trip outdoors. Kern County Museum has done such an excellent job with providing visuals of how our past residents used to live, and with keeping the preservation of the places in which those lived-in or conducted business. My family loves experiencing all of the interactive exhibits and we always look forward to the awesome events the museum has year-round.

This museum is quite literally a step back in time. Everything is so interesting and you learn tons of stuff. Then there's the store filled with really cool things. The clock tower is so awesome! And they host a variety of events. I highly recommend a visit.

Lovely retreat to the initial settlement in Bakersfield. The plaques are very informative in regards to who the inhabitants of the buildings were, where the buildings originally were and when they were relocated in an effort to preserve history. There are a lot of undisturbed spiders by the train. Admire from afar if you are afraid of spiders. The spiders I found there were pretty harmless. My three year old had fun playing with the spiders.

The Bakersfield Christmas Town Lights was very mediocre. Sorry I expected more than just lights being thrown up on old buildings and trees.

  • 5/5 Maria G. 3 years ago on Google
The Christmas lights were wonderful my 3 year old loved it the only thing that my son didn't like was that he wanted more lights the ride seemed to short for him but other then that it was okay for 25 bucks

I went to see this thinking was so small. It’s huge and I loved it. Too bad I can’t see when the Xmas lights go on. I will be going back to Chicago. I so loved it. Taken care off and the employees putting the lights on. A couple was there too Swedish but it was awesome. Mostly alone due to COVID but I had a great experience. Wish I could volunteer here. Too bad the store was closed😟. I really left wanting a souvenir. This place is a must see.

Did the Christmas town drive through, was very well put together, lots of attention to detail, went smoothly. I appreciated the efforts of the museum to make it a safe and enjoyable experience. They offered hot cocoa and marshmallows as well and it made the whole night memorable.
