Expansive rugged rock area with ancient caves showcasing some 20,000 years of rock art. The museum before the rocks in my opinion can be skipped

Worth visiting. About 1 hr drive from Baku city. A historical place with great scenery. Well displayed and nice walkway with steps. You have to be able to climb steps to fully enjoy the rocks. You need minimum 1 hr

It's really worthy to visit this site. As you will see on the map in the museum, there are not many places like this one around the world. The museum from its exterior doesn't looks like many things can be seen inside, but you will be surprised once you enter it.

It’s a very important place from a historical perspective, showcasing petroglyphs from possibly 15000 years ago. It’s worth the 1 hour trip from Baku. I liked it and definitely recommend it not to be missed when in Baku

Historically important place showcasing petroglyphs from possibly 15000 years ago Worth the hour or so trip from Baku Do wear appropriate shoes and gear as the trek up and around the site is not completely paved, and you'll be exposed to the elements The museum nearby can help familiarize you with the history and petrolyphs

(Translated by Google) Fantastic place, a must visit. Nature is like on another planet. Rock carvings - as if you got into a time machine and transferred to it thousands of years ago. It is as if the history textbook revived around, but not boring, but very exciting. A good, modern museum with Russian-speaking workers. But to go from Baku is not close, it is necessary to allocate almost a day for a tour.

I came here twice, the second time bringing my class of international students. The park guides were incredibly knowledgeable of the history of rock art carvings world wide and had a deep appreciation for their work here at Gobustan. I was really impressed and had a great experience learning about the ancient history of this place.

Spectacular (if you have an interest in such things). Cave drawings, weird/cool cliffs, perfectly camouflaged little lizards bouncing around . The museum has an excellent video that puts it all together chronicling the lives and deaths of the inhabitants. It's close to Baku and definitely worth the trip.

This is a beautiful mountainous region with ancient carvings on one side and the calm Caspian Sea on the other. You can easily spend a good 1 to 2 hr walk in this region. Recommend to wear walking/running shoes while visiting this place. Its rich in history, has a museum, a small local restaurant, washroom etc. This place does have snakes so always walk in groups and never leave kids alone as it can be accident prone due to the uneven rocky walk area. Always walk on the pathway only!! Enjoy the cold drink outside that an old lady sells, she says she prepares it from water pumped out of the mountain directly.

Probably 62.4km from Old City An open museum and included in UNSECO Heritage last 2007 Entrance fee is 10AZN (as of December 31, 2022) Better to use rubber shoes as there are too many interesting view as there are more or less 3,500 petroglyphs. As I said, images such as camel caravan, bull fighting, ritual dances, primitive humans and lots more. The carvings is dated back to 5K years ago. Obey the rules. It takes more or less 2 hrs to check one by one

Fascinating views of the rocky terrain and the petroglyphs - engravings dating back to 20,000 years ago. The museum along the way is worth a visit before heading to the site, since it gives a good idea of what the petroglyphs mean. Not wheelchair accessible. No waits required during early visits, However, crowd starts to build up later in the day.

Amazing place with breath taking view... Caspian on one side and high rise mountain on the other side... Scenic place and above the ancient carvings done are mesmerizing. The viewing gallery is pretty good... There is a binocular viewing provision here which is worth a try. There is also a public toilet available unlike most of the places this facility is not available in Azerbaijan!

When you will see the figures on the rock turn around and look at the sea. Imagine those boats with the people in them. Imagine them doing their hunting dance and shamans singing their songs. Imagine wild animals around you.

(Translated by Google) One of the oldest and richest historical monuments of Baku is Gobustan, known in the world for its rock carvings. In Gobustan, in the Boyukdash, Kichikdash, Cingirdagh, Songardagh and Shikhgaya mountains, there are many rock carvings, camps, dwellings, tombstones and others that witness the Stone Age and the great past of the Azerbaijani people. Monuments of all periods from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages can be found in the Boyukdash area. Located about 1 hour south of Baku this little known historic attraction rises out of the bone dry foothills. The museum and rock art are well worth a visit. The museum was informative, interesting and modern. The displays were well presented with a few interactive displays. I am not usually a great fan of museums, but I enjoyed my visit. It is unique, not all countries have such place, it's totally worth to check, but u need tour guide otherwise, you will not enjoy it and know where to look. The sheer number of rock wall drawings were also impressive.

Amazing place with so strong energy. There is a small museum where you can see art pictures which is not able to see on rocks and some history about Gobustan. Then you can walk between rocks and observe rock pictures from very ancient times. From pics area not so far you can drive to Mud volcanos. There are around 800 of them on the Earth and almost half of them in Azerbaijan.

Nice place to visit and to know first humans how lived. It was around 90mins away from Baku, they had 3 main caves you could see drawing of first humans, one was very big covered by huge rocks, you could go inside and walk, but other two they were smaller you have to see from out side. Place facilities were good, there were many ares you were not allowed to go and you see many signs all over the place. I really recommend to visit this place with tour guide or read about it before you visit, otherwise it is not going to be something interesting for you

  • 5/5 Haziq A. 5 years ago on Google
I am not a very big fan of historical places and sights (hence i skipped all the castles) but this is not just any regular historical sight, it is in fact ancient, one of the earliest men probably used to live here :) (just kidding but it is actually too old). The drawings on rocks and the signs of how people used to live here as a community is just mesmerising. You would think that someone just made those drawings to attract tourists but UNICEF as recognised this place as true historical place and the drawings to be legitimate. One of the must go places in Azerbaijan.

  • 4/5 Bryan H. 4 years ago on Google
Qobustan is a pretty unique place. The museum itself is nothing to right home about. Maybe I am spoiled by Western museums but this seems more like a high school science project then a well put together museum. Harsh but true. The real gem is the petroglyphs located outside. The walk through them is stunning and you can get up close and personal. I highly recommend you book a private tour guide and do Qobustan, The Mud Volcanos, Fire Temple and Yanardag in one day.

This ancient art on rocks preserved as a UNESCO site has a museum close by with explanations. But seeing the actual rocks with ancient art (petroglyphs) was wonderful! It was even better because we has a guide to explain so many things to us. Also we went in December so it was quite cold. The guide we had showed us a lion rock where ancient man would lure big bulls, corner it and force it off the lion rock which is like a cliff. It's called a lion rock because it has the shape of the face of a lion and is like a cliff. This is how they would capture big animals. We also saw a rock structure which was like a cave where we were told animals would we cornered and killed. The art of rituals were also drawn on these rocks. The presence of a Shaman was also depicted in the drawings. It was really interesting to know that one particular drawn image could have been the structure of DNA (as told by our guide) discovered in modern science only in the 1950s. The double helical structure could actually be recognized on the drawing if you looked for it. This site is not very expansive but a short walk which is better with a guide.

👍 The road to this museum has been paved since the last time I was there on Feb 2023. So you can in fact drive here or hire a taxi to get here all the way now. There is no need to change taxi at the town of GOBUSTAN or get a jeep or 4wd according to a lot of blogs.
