Very long awaited for us. First time we came here, the restaurant was packed and we were told the wait would be 45 minutes. Cool, no problem. We waited an hour, came back to check in with the host and her response was she wasn’t sure how long it’ll be but it’s going to be a “while” so we left and went somewhere else. Definitely didn’t like how that was handled because that was extremely unprofessional. We wouldn’t have waited that long if she told us that from the start. Waste of time. Anyway we played it safe this time around and got there at opening. The aguachile was very interesting. Very good but can get sickening after some time as I don’t feel the acidity “cooks” the raw shrimp enough. The tacos… oh am I disappointed! They look like they’re packed with flavor, don’t they? Very deceiving because they were so lacking. Honestly they all tasted the same even tho we got all different ones. This place is not worth the hype. Would not recommend.

If you’re a fan of Mexican food & even if you’re not - you should definitely visit Clavel!! I had such an amazing time at dinner there. Not only were the staff super friendly, the venue itself truly captures the vibe and essence of what you would expect from a mezcaleria and taqueria!!! I really loved all of the cocktails that I had, and as for the tacos… I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves!! Next time I’m in Baltimore, I’ll definitely be giving them another visit. The highlights from the menu for me were the chips and guacamole, carne de res & the barbacao!!! Basically everything was 10/10!! Just keep in mind they get pretty busy, so if possible - make a reservation to guarantee you don’t end up having too long of a wait!!

Our party checked in and joined the waitlist on a Saturday around 6PM, we were not seated until 6:45PM but we were expecting a long wait. While waiting we did checkout another local spot, once seated the service and food was WELL worth the wait! The chips and salsa were exceptional, the tortilla chips were the perfect texture and level of saltiness. All of our entrees were excellent! Would definitely take the time to check this spot out!!

I have been eyeing this place for years and finally experienced the greatness Clavel offers. From the beautiful decor to the attentive service, Clavel is a place that you will constantly frequent. We ordered the queso dip with chorizo, fish, chicken, and pork tacos with several margaritas. The queso was perfectly hot and creamy with the delicious smokiness from the chorizo. The tacos were phenomenal. They were fresh, and the flavors were authentic. They have a wonderful happy hour selection, so we ordered the margaritas. Once you order one, you will definitely crave another. Overall, everything was wonderful. Tips: Get there early. They don't open to 500 p.m. but the line will start to pick at 4:45 ish. Thank me later😊.

Heard about this place for years and finally made it inside. Great margarita, guacamole was terrific and the tacos (veggie and chicken) were superb. Only quibble is I prefer a flour tortilla but their corn tortillas were quite good. Go. Enjoy!

This place has such a vibe. I love the food, the service and the drinks! Came here after an event. The neighborhood can be sketchy but all is well. The food is amazing! The tacos and empanadas were delicious. I ordered the fish with pablano and cheese and it was simply amazing with the tortillas! Definitely the place to try.

So so so good! Had the ceviche and a bunch of different tacos (chicken, beef, shrimp, fish) absolutely delicious! The chips and salsa was good too

So delicious! These tacos are incredible, the margarita is perfection (and you can spice it up with some special add-ins), and the queso and side of black beans are both *chefs kiss*. The menu is a bit overwhelming and there’s a lot on there that is unfamiliar (especially the cocktail menu) so it may be a good idea to look ahead to get a feel for it. My only complaint is that it is extremely loud in the restaurant, so groups are challenging. I went with about 8 people and we had a very hard time communicating, so it’s probably best for smaller groups/couples.

Strong contender for the best restaurant in Baltimore. An absolute favorite. My friends and I have dined here more times than we can count. Aguachile rojo is my favorite ceviche probably ever. Fantastic cocktails too. Every single thing on the menu is delicious. These guys know what they’re doing.

Writing this as a somewhat delayed review but I am still dreaming about the fish tacos! As of my visit, they are only open for dinner starting at 5 PM (excluding Sundays). You can't make reservations except for the mezcal bar which I believe are hard to get. My friend and I opted to show up right at 5 for happy hour (M-Th 5-7). People line up outside to get in right at 5! If you are coming past 5 I would anticipate a wait. We were quickly seated once inside. The space is really beautiful and aesthetic. Wait staff was super nice and attentive. My friend and I ordered spicy margaritas (delicious) and the queso to start that was discounted for happy hour. Their chips are very fresh and homemade, and I really enjoyed the chorizo queso! We opted for tacos and I got a lamb taco and fried cod taco. They were both very good but I loved the fish taco! We decided to do their chocolate and mezcal pairing as a dessert. It was really interesting! Not a bad price at $18 for two people to share (considering you get the chocolate plus some mezcal). I can't wait to go back. Clavel's high ratings on Google (and elsewhere) are definitely well-deserved!!

Outstanding neighbourhood restaurant, that anyone should be thrilled to call a local. It’s super busy but maintains good order and pleasant buzz. Food is ace, with maybe a little lack of refinement here and there, but you’ve got to really try hard to find anything wrong. Well pitched drinks list, and good service. It’s fun, the food is good, place looks and feels great

This is a place where you have to make a reservation or wait in line because they are that good! Very good tacos and drinks! Great atmosphere, i really enjoyed their tacos!

Have given this place two chances because people rave about it, but I don't understand the hype. I want to like it, and tried four different things the second time in hopes of finding something remarkable, but everything is underwhelming or disappointing. The tacos are extremely dry and the empanadas have a bizarre, nontraditional dough that just makes you feel sad... The drinks and service are great, but I just couldn't recommend this place to anyone for the food. It's extremely popular though so is probably worth checking out!

We LOVE this place! We’ve only been twice but we have had such great experiences both times. The service, food and drinks are delicious. We love the Mezcalita drinks. 3-4 tacos each typically fill us up. The wait staff are knowledgeable of the menu and any recommendations we’ve gotten from them are always on point. We’ve done indoor, shared table dining as well as outdoor, picnic table dining. We’ve never had to wait long and always get a table (no reservation). I would probably be more inclined to secure a reservation if I had a larger (3+) party. Parking is rough over here so you might need to spin the block…don’t get discouraged. I’ve also seen many people utilize ride share. Good vibes here too.

Our family of four enjoyed an excellent meal at Clavel. We started with guacamole and queso fundido con rajahs with their fresh cooked tortilla chips The chips are thick and great for dipping. Two shared the Aguachile Ceviche which had striped bass and shrimp with 3 salsas on the side. The others had Tacos de la Tierra. One each of Puerco Pabil, Barbacoa, Rajas Vegetario, and huitlacoche. We were full but went ahead and ordered flan and tres leches cake. The margaritas were delicious. All the food was interesting, well-prepared, and tasty service was excellent and for all the food and drinks, the price wasn’t bad at all

When we arrived, we were told it would be an hour and forty-five minutes wait. I was so turned off at this point. The hosted suggested we go two doors down and have a drink and appetizers. I went but my mood was thrown off. Baby I got that first margarita🍹 and I loosened up. That drink was absolutely delicious 😋 About an hour and twenty minutes in we received notice our table was ready. The server came over quickly and introduced herself. In a packed to the backdoor restaurant the drinks arrived quickly. Now on to the food, I have never been to a place where I ordered multiple tacos 🌮 and they all taste amazing!!! Best birthday outing I had in awhile!

This beautiful, rustic restaurant is hands down, the best Mexican restaurant in Baltimore area. Authentic dishes with unique spins put on them. Try anything, everything is delicious. Highly recommend making reservations or getting there at opening on the weekends. This place gets busy and fast!

Modern elevated Mexican restaurant in Baltimore. Expect higher prices than a standard taqueria, you’re paying for the vibes too! Happy Hour- M-Th from 5-7PM, $4 off margaritas and queso. Highlights- Carne de res taco, Happy hour wmargaritas, $6 tres leches, great lively interior! Getting there/getting a table- Street parking. We came on a Thursday night and it was packed. We were told it was a 30 minute wait for a table (note: they don’t take reservations), and that we could wait at their storefront next door and order cocktails. We opted for that since the entryway was so small and there weren’t any seats at the bar. The wait was less than 30 mins and we didn’t even get our drinks yet before our table was ready. Restaurant vibes- Very lively. Pretty loud with people talking. A little small. Aesthetic hanging lights in the dining room. I liked the vibe! What we ordered- Once seated, service was quick. We ordered the tuna ceviche to start (Atun con Piña). 4 tacos - 2 pork (Cochinita Pibil, Carnitas con Salsa Verde) and 2 beef (Barbacoa, Carne de Res). We also ordered a quesadilla and added the chicken tinga (Tinga de Pollo). Food review- Atun con piña tuna ceviche on top of a pineapple and tostada, a little fishy but good pairing with the fresh pineapple and the salty tostada which tasted like Fritos lol Tacos I’m not a huge pork person in general so none of those blew my mind. The one that I really liked was the Carne de Res- which was the sirloin tips. It was savory and had good flavor. Would order again. All the meats were moist and not dry. Their corn tortillas were also a highlight for me- there was a blurb on the menu that they prepare them using an ancient process. Quesadilla Pretty good. The quesadilla uses queso chihuahua which has a sharper flavor than a standard cheese blend. Not a bad thing- just expect a little punch. We ordered it with the chicken tinga- which I would recommend. It paired well with the cheese. Dessert - We got the tres leches which came astronomically fast. It had really good flavor and not too sweet which is my preference, but if I’m being picky, the cake isn’t as smooth in texture as other tres leches that I’ve had elsewhere. For $6 though, it’s honestly a steal for a dessert at a restaurant. Give it a try! Drinks- had to get the margaritas of course during happy hour. It was $1 extra for any add ons, which wasn’t really worth in my opinion. The margaritas were good- can’t complain about the happy hour price either! Service- Friendly and fast. 20% gratuity included on your bill.

This place was recommended to me by a co-worker and I am so happy I was able to eat here! Such a cute vibe, I had the one of the shrimp ceviche tostadas and a shrimp taco with a side of guacamole & chips. And their black bean dip is seriously sensational if you like black beans! Also I had a margarita which was cool. I love the decor and the space I can’t wait to bring a friend back. I also LOVE that there was a 20% gratuity already added to my check, kudos to the owner/managers for making sure their employees are taken care of!

Day after Thanksgiving while in town visiting with family, my husband and I came here for a date night to try this 2022 James Beard semi-finalist restaurant. We arrived a few minutes before doors opened at 5pm and there were a few people waiting. We got seated immediately at a two person table along the wall of one of the rooms. The selection of dishes is amazing. Note that due to the low watt incandescent lights and small print of the menu, it can be challenging to read the menu so it is worth reading it online or using your phone light to read it. We started with the EMPANADAS DE PURÉ DE PAPA and loved the texture of the outer shell made from corn and the potato purée topped with salsa. This followed by the A T U N C O N P I Ñ A, which had fresh tuna over a slice of pineapple and on top of a tostada; getting a bite from all three ingredients is a delight. Drinks wise I enjoyed my TUBA POR FAVOR, which has a unique flavor and went well with our starters. My husband appreciated our waiter helping him identify a non-alcoholic cocktail, the PAJARO VERDE. For dinner, we chose two tacos. I got the CARNITAS CON SALSA VERDE and CARNE DES RES, I loved the intentionally of all the ingredients with consideration to texture and flavor. Such a joy to have these freshly made tacos and the side of hot sauce was pleasantly spicy without overwhelming my palette. Given it was a cool night, I had the CALDO DE CAMARON which was a consommé of pacific shrimp with a side of rice and saltine crackers to add as you ate. A very rich soup that warms the soul and the giant shrimp with the shrimp head was so good. I liked that it was served in a cup with a handle cause it was nice to drink it from a mug while warming my hands. My husband liked his BARBACOA DE BORREGO taco with the lamb and beef shanks more than his HONGOS CON HUITLACOCHE because he preferred the meat flavors over the mushroom and corn. We ended with the flan and loved the creamy and not overly sweetness of this dessert. I paired this with their CARAJILLO, which had espresso, ancho chile and bitter orange shrub. I would try the Mezcal flight next time to try a curated sampling of what they have to offer. Atmosphere is nice and a perfect spot for a date night with plenty of options for food and beverages.

Good vibes with friends! It's a great place to grab drinks to start or end the evening! The servers were timely when taking orders, and the bartenders made our drinks quickly. Very impressive for a big party on an extremely busy night! The food served is purpose as a filler in between drinks! The atmosphere is great for hanging out with friends or a date night!

This place is honestly one of my favorites in Baltimore. My friends took me and everything on this menu was amazing They had many types of mezcal and elk the cocktails were also great There is 3 main eating areas . 2 inside and one outside We went on a Monday and it was busy. I would come back every week if I lived in Baltimore The staff were also very friendly and helpful There is a small shop also with lots of Mexican groceries and pottery etc

This place is a hidden gem for Mexican food in Baltimore. The lamb taco and tamales were really great. I would definitely go back to try other menu items. The place is simple yet elegant. I would highly recommend this place. **The orange colored salsa they give with the taco is really good and spicy 🔥 be careful when you try it.

Food was amazingggg!!! The ambiance was very cool, dim lights, Latino music playing, loved everything! Got the mezcal flight (house made), some esquites (delicious), a tostada, aguachile (spicy and delicious) and several tacos! The barbacoa de borrego was probably my favorite.

Been here twice when visiting MD for the holidays. The service is great, especially when you dine at the bar. Super friendly staff and quick as well. Recommend getting there early if possible, there was already a line formed before they opened for dinner at 5pm. My favorite menu item has been the tres leches cake, moist and fluffy. I’ve also had their street tacos, and a number of crudo and ceviche items. Everything tastes fresh and clean especially the seafood and guacamole, but coming from LA, I haven’t had anything that’s been really outstanding.
