The people who work there are great, and so many are genuinely caring. Admin staff, Nurses, Orderly, doctors. All wonderful!! If you're admitted, I'm sure you'll get great care from the staff The ER itself is horrible. Being from Baltimore, I've always been proud that Hopkins is such a huge part of the city. This ER doesn't make me proud. Myself and two others who are close to me, we've had 3 visits to this ER within the past 5 months. Wait times in each situation were 10 to 14 hours on the low end. Two left before being seen because there was no updates or end in sight. The waiting room is filled often with drug addicts, people with mental health issues, etc. While I'm sympathetic to some of these situations, it doesn't make for a good environment when trying seek emergency assistance, stuck sitting in a waiting room all day. I'm shocked that such a critical area of Hopkins could be managed so poorly. Horribly run ER. I know it's not easy making a decision on which ER to go to during a stressful emergency situation, but I would recommend another ER if you have the option. Not a pleasant experience

I have given this ER one star only because there is no option for a zero star rating. AVOID THIS CIRCUS AT ALL COSTS. Early in the morning, I contacted my PCP about substantial pain in my neck, left shoulder, and down my left arm. She directed me to go to an ER immediately. I asked about using a primary care facility and she insisted that I go to an ER. As a Hopkins patient of over 20 years, my wife drove me to the Bayview ER. The intake nurse was great. All of the multiple techs that saw me were great. The security folks were great and very much needed. However, the employees (green uniforms) were the worst medical providers that I have encountered in my 72 years. After 6+ hours in the circus from hell, I was tested but never seen by a doctor and I was never told was was being done other than the tests that I was given. I asked the green gowned employees three times over the 6+ hours what my status was and the answers were just have a seat and we will be with you as soon as passible at about the 2.5 hours point; you are third in line at about the 5 hour point; and, yet again, you are third in line at the 6+ hour point. After the second time that I had asked about my status, one of the employees was so upset at my simple question, she started call me names; my instant reaction to that was less than polite. We left about 15 minutes after the third exchange as it was obvious that we were not going to be seen and no one would give us a straight answer about anything. Additionally, the pain had become too great to remain in the ER while being ignored. During our 6+ hours in the ER, we watched folks plug in their chargers and then fall asleep -- or pass out -- without being seen or checked for hours; we watched one fight and heard a second one while being tested (again, security was great); we observed one person asleep who rolled over and his lighter and drugs/drug paraphernalia fell on the floor where the staff ignored it; we had to avoid patients forcing their way to the bathrooms and vending machines, often yelling or shouting at the top of their lungs; and we observed one lady who did not speak English being ignored for 2+ hours before someone who spoke Spanish helped her. We were at the far end of the ER and heard but did not see MULTIPLE other problems behind us. MY WIFE AND I WILL NEVER AGAIN SEEK MEDICAL HELP AT THE HOPKINS BAYVIEW ER. Since our visit to the Bayview ER, we have read the other reviews that generally detail the same situations. The average of 81 other reviews is 1.7 stars; Hopkins really needs a 0 star option.

I must admit I was apprehensive about going to this ER after reading all of the bad reviews. And so I was pleasantly surprised by my semi-good experience here at Bayview ER. I drove myself here on an early Sunday afternoon because of heart palpitations and mild chest pains. I was second in line at the check-in window and I only waited for about 10 minutes. After another 10 minutes I was taken in to check my blood pressure, EKG, and chest X-Ray. Then I was sent back to the lobby to wait while a doctor read the results. This time the wait was 20 minutes before I was taken into a room in the ER. The nurse hooked me up again on an EKG machine and blood pressure equipment. Then she took blood samples. The ER doctor finally came to see me after waiting in that room for almost 45 minutes. I could tell he read up on my medical history when he was talking about a stress test I took three years ago. He told me the results of my tests and said he wanted me to stay overnight for observations. By that time it was already 6:00 PM. My nurse and doctor did not return to tell me when I was going to be moved upstairs for the night. At 7:00 PM the shifts changed and I could hear the nurses talking to the night shifts about the patients there. I was fully expecting either my nurse or doctor to introduce the night nurse and doctor who would be taking over my care. Did not happen. I was really hungry at that time since my last meal was 7 hours ago. I had to buzz my new nurse to ask when I would be getting something to eat. She said she would talk with my doctor about it first. After 30 minutes of waiting I had to buzz her again. A different person came to see me who was definitely more helpful than my nurse. It took another 30 minutes before my dinner was delivered. It was almost 10:00 PM when I was finally moved into a room upstairs. And it only happened because they needed my room at the ER. Morning came and I was happy that the doctor came to see me around 7:00 AM to tell me that I was scheduled for a Coronary CT Scan that very morning. Sure enough I was taken downstairs for the scan at a little after 8:00 AM. Then I went back upstairs to my room for breakfast while waiting for the doctor to read the results of my CT scan. It was after 11:00 AM when the doctor came and said my scans were normal and I was going to be discharged. But it was more than an hour later before I was officially discharged. I had to buzz my new nurse and reminded him about it. I gave three stars for thoroughly examining my symptoms and making sure I was in the clear before discharging me. I would suggest that Bayview work on improving their communications between the doctors, nurses, staff, and patients.

One star but it should be zero. This place is completely packed with trauma and code blues all the time. Went on a Monday and was told the wait times are up as high as 28 hours. You sit in a hallway and are ignored. People crying, moaning, and calling for nurses to help for hours on end. People vomiting in the hall because they are waiting so long. If you love your family go somewhere else. Cafeteria is only open for lunch so your only option for food and drink is a mostly empty and sometimes nonfunctional vending machine. Just awful.

I would like to give them no stars. They never took medical history, then put in record that my husband has history of MI- completely unknown to us. Went for kidney stone pain and vomiting- he was treated over 2 hrs later after pain and nausea had subsided. He was in Er for 15.5 hrs- did a CT after 12 hrs. Refused to give him pain meds for possible next episode, even though they saw more stones on CT. Now he has pain again- I suppose we are supposed to go back for another 16 hour wait. Lab work that should have been addressed was NOT! Disorganized and incompetent are best descriptors. They move you here, back to WR, move you there, back to WR- they must have moved him 5 times- moved him to an exam room one time but did nothing there- just moved him again. As a long time ER nurse and NP for many years, l’m telling everyone- this is as bad as it gets. I have filed complaint with Board of Medical QA for MD and recommend others do same or these problems will never be addressed.

Thought I would buck the trend here, but alas, it was not meant to be. Went to the ER for unexplained migraines and to get a CT scan. Started off well enough. Blood work was done quickly and results uploaded to my virtual page to review. CT scan done within three hours of being there, so no complaints so far. Staff also perfectly nice. After the scan, I was told it would be 30-45 minutes before a doctor would be out to review the results with me. This was around 9:30pm. By 1am, no one had any indication of when a doctor would be out to see me. I basically told the nurses triage that I was going home and they were able to tell me that my results looked normal. That being said, they were not uploaded to my virtual page until 8am the next morning, which means it would have most likely been another seven hours before I saw a doctor. There is a serious disconnect between the work the ER nurses do and the doctors there. Thankful for all the work they do and the quickness on their end, but there needs to be more doctors available. I also overheard someone say that had been there two hours longer than I had.

The nursing staff was very kind. As well as security. But I would’ve loved to have felt like a priority to the doctors. I spent well over 15+ hours waiting to see one. I’m afraid I feel worse now than when I came in. I’ve been respectful, kind & understanding of the circumstances. I deserve the same in return.

If I could give it, zero stars, I would. Checked in today the nurse that checks you in was more than rude she was ignorant, and downright rude and everything she didn’t say!! She did not deserve her job. I normally don’t report this stuff but need to say this and warn any body thing of going to turn around. I will never go back. The Bayview emergency department!!! I’d rather suffer I didn’t stay

The worst hospital I’ve ever seen and I grew up in Chicago. Came in at 2 pm and still waiting at 9 pm. People are in the waiting room with IV’s in their arms and crackheads running around stealing with no security.

👍 In general this was a fairly good experience. On the positive side, there was sufficient parking, check in was seamless and quick and there was enough room to keep distance from others, at least when we went in but this obviously is subject to change by demand. The doctors were thorough, most staf...

👍 I honestly want to give Union Memorial a good rating, I sincerely do. However, it's so challenging when some of the doctors are just not that good at their job. It must be extremely tedious yet easy to write a referral for all issues your patients are experiencing oppose to doing a few simple tasks...
