The
Church
of
Nossa
Senhora
do
Carmo
began
to
be
built
in
1787
and
spent
the
following
century
being
built
and/or
renovated,
until,
in
1879,
the
work
was
completed.
Authorization
for
the
existence
of
the
temple
was
given
by
Dom
Antônio
de
Guadalupe,
bishop
of
Rio
de
Janeiro,
the
director
of
the
works
and
also
the
artisan,
was
none
other
than
the
Portuguese
master,
Francisco
de
Lima,
who,
in
the
same
period,
he
also
worked
on
the
construction
of
the
Church
of
São
Francisco
de
Assis.
Structure
The
church's
architecture
holds
some
curiosities,
starting
with
the
twin
towers.
From
the
bases
to
the
domes,
they
have
an
aspect
that
differs
from
traditional
colonial
architecture:
they
were
built
in
an
octagonal
shape.
Another
point
is
the
carving,
the
wood
was
carved
and
painted
white,
but
the
gilding
and
colorful
painting
process
can
never
be
completed.
Famous
works
of
art
The
entrance
to
Igreja
do
Carmo
is
very
well-known
and
eye-catching.
The
Carmelite
iconography
was
delicately
carved
in
soapstone
and
features
the
work
of
three
artists.
The
most
famous,
Aleijadinho
sculpted
the
angels
under
the
pilasters,
which
hold
the
stripes
and
scapulars.
The
cherub
next
to
the
door
and
the
medallion,
in
turn,
were
the
work
of
two
other
artists.
And,
inside
the
church,
there
are
also
works
of
art
worthy
of
attention,
such
as
the
mysterious
unfinished
image
of
Christ,
whose
closure
or,
rather,
its
absence,
has
already
created
legends.
Full
Entry
R$5.00.
Opening
hours:
08:00
to
17:00.
Bell
Museum
Opened
in
2018,
in
celebration
of
the
305th
anniversary
of
São
João
del-Rei,
“Sentinelas
Sonoras”
is
the
first
bell
museum
in
Brazil.
The
project
was
designed
by
André
D’ângelo,
an
architect
from
São
João
who
studied
the
ringing
of
bells
in
Minas
Gerais.
Anyone
who
visits
the
space
will
find:
the
history
of
bells
in
the
Western
world,
the
manufacture
of
bells
and
their
status
as
a
musical
instrument,
the
bell
ringers
of
São
João
del-Rei
and
the
language
of
bells.
The
museum
is
positioned
inside
the
left
wing
of
the
Church
of
Nossa
Senhora
do
Carmo.
