My wife and I went to the Saints Louis Art Museum on a Saturday a little before noon. It wasn't very crowded at all. It definitely feels more like an art museum than an art gallery which I think I prefer. Lots of art ranging from paintings, pottery to medieval armor and mummies. I had read it would take about 2 1/2 hours to see everything, well after 5 hours, we still hadn't seen everything. This place has a lot to see, and if you take your time it can take up a whole day. We really enjoyed our visit here and will definitely be coming back in the future.

I was recommended to visit the free Saint Louis Art Museum during my stay in St. Louis. I'm glad I did too because this museum has a wide variety of art including sculptures, artifacts, ceramics and paintings. I came hoping to find some inspiration and broaden awareness of art history and left feeling as if I accomplished that mission. Thank you for a lovely time!

First-class free museum (except for special exhibits) with something for everyone. Classics or modern, painting or sculpture, this museum has it. We were impressed with the very good, helpful explanations for each piece. Lots of free parking and a stunning view over Forest Park. This is definitely a sampling of "everything art." - From classic paintings, famous artists, and cultural art ranging from a variety of American Indian cultures to Egyptian to the various art revolutions, and even modern art, this museum has it all. Various furniture pieces and fully furnished rooms of historical times give the viewer a sense of what a room would look like during the period of time and location portrayed. It has so much, I could see visiting and focusing on particular aspects and needing to come back multiple times to appreciate all that they have to offer.

Like so many other amazing stops in St Louis, the Art Museum is free. 3 levels of art collections from every culture and genre. Everything you can imagine. Also has a gift shop and a small cafe. One really unique thing they have is they've taken the inside of some historic American homes and relocated them here inside the museum. Love visiting here. Outside there is the view on Art Hill, overlooking the water and fountains. Its very nice and a lot of people had professional photos done outside of the museum. Parking around this area is the biggest challenge. Depending on when you go there might be an open spot in the free lot. Otherwise, there is the museum garage that costs, or you can street park, but expect to walk a few blocks. Don't try and park in illegal spaces. The park rangers are out in force.

Thank you for helping me reach over 9 million views!!!!!! If you'd like to see more reviews of the places we visit, follow, like, and share. Here's the review: Our family went to the Saint Louis Art Museum today for the Kwanzaa event and the Hip Hop exhibition. We wore festive attire for the holiday spirit. Check out the attached photos for a look at what we put together. The Gallery was welcoming as always. The DJ was also amazing. He took time to connect with the audience and take photos while playing music, celebrating the wide variety of Hip-Hop culture. He read the crown well and when he saw me doing Bay Area dances, he put on some E40 right away. The Kwanzaa celebration was beautiful. They had a large precession of African-Americans of all ages, drummers, dancers, poets, readers, unity recitation from the youth, and honored our Elders. There was a scavenger hunt, an overflow room, refreshments, crafts, and so much to keep us entertained for the day. I always enjoy the quiet exhibit days, but today was a louder exhibition, and I enjoyed every moment of it. We look forward to more events celebrating diversity and culture.

I think it is so cool that this is free. You could definitely spend an entire day here. It houses so many different styles of art and it is huge...three floors full of art theres an outdoor sculpture area. I went on a Saturday and didn't have to wait. Everyone that greeted me and at the desk was very helpful. When you enter you are technically on the second floor. Go check it out!

Easy to spend a whole day here. Lots of famous paintings and art. Many unique collections. We had a great time! We didn't even see the paid exhibit but the rest of the museum is free. Cafe was OK. Only gripe was the many guests loudly talking and kids running around. You're supposed to be QUIET at an art museum.

What’s an art museum in a working class city like St Louis? In this case it turns out it’s quite good. While it has some of the stalwarts of the museums (Rousseau, Holbein, etc), and the modern conceptual art. The real treasures come from the unexpected places. The Oceania Art and Sub Saharan African art collections are actually far superior to some comparably sized museums. No entrance fee either. Go check it out.

Visiting with friends at the Art Museum The Hip Hop Ego event "THE CULTURE" Expanding my experience with hip-hop music in St. Louis. I thought the experience was enlightening. I liked and appreciated the symbolism from some of the pieces. The exhibit "camouflage" was impressive. Ascension was another display with a meaning. This exhibit conveys the trials and tribulations the Hip Hop culture has endured. Knowing this struggle, they continue to express their life through their music and fashion. This is worth the price of admission. As you leave the exhibit, there is a print of St. Louis Hip hop artists is on display as a tribute of the East Coast artists.

Beautiful museum with amazing artworks. The building itself is fascinating. Such a really gorgeous place that it's located in...a must see! Loved everything I saw inside. The employees were really friendly. A true jewel of Saint Louis. Also, it’s free!

SLAM offers free parking in the lots opposite the building. However, be aware that visitors to the zoo often use those lots as well, so they can fill up quickly. The regular galleries are FREE all day every day, and the visiting gallery is free on Fridays as well. The Museum boasts three floors of exhibits, and has a self-guided tour option, as well as lightweight stools you can carry with you and sit on while meditating on the art. The building is gorgeous and on a grand scale, and the park opposite has lots of green space, a walking/running trail, and lovely fountains. The zoo, museum, and park are built on the site of the 1904 World's Fair, and the neighborhood feels very safe and upscale.

I visit the Museum and the collection was able to satisfy my cravings for art. They have nice pieces of art from very famous painters. You will definitely add these paints to your art checklist. I would highly recommend it to everyone. Also it has many other activities surrounding the building. You don’t even have to move your car if you wanna do a walk, a bike ride, visit the zoo, or just chill out in the grass or do some sport. The outdoors reminded me of Versailles, in France.

I came specifically for the Monet Exhibit ($12). I loved that the Museum itself is free and has quite a selection. It was really easy to navigate but maps are available if desired. So much space so it never felt crowded. Very well done Museum.

This was one of the best museum experiences I have had. The exhibits were beautiful and the museum is large. My husband and I spent 3 hours walking through the museum and we could of spent all day. They have a restaurant on site. We didn’t eat there but the menu looked appetizing and the prices were reasonable. The park in front of the museum is very beautiful and relaxing.

If you appreciate art, there is no reason you wouldn't like the St. Louis Art Museum. With over 34,000 objects from collections around the world, it's easy to spend a couple of hours here. The staff is friendly, and the bathrooms are clean. I was surprised by how quiet it was, especially considering that admission and outdoor parking are free.

Really nice museum, easy to spend a couple hours here. Collection did feel a bit catch-all and didn't seem to have a real focus beyond the large amount of German works. Bonus that it is free, shouldn't be skipped.

Awesome museum!! & FREE, what are you kidding me?!?? I thought we had a great museum in Denver, but this is NYC quality. Displays & content are amazing & huge. I didn't expect so much art nor the age & quality of the displays.

The art museum is the place to go when the weather outside is not the best. Entry is free and the underground parking is only $5 for members which I am. This past weekend, we went to see the special exhibit Nubia which was free for members. Our visit to SLAM is always a great experience.

Free admission! A wide range of collections! Super nice organized in different categories and themes. Loved the landscape design outside the museum: open view of the pond on a hill in the big park!! What a great treasure and gift that the city of St. Louis sends to the visitors. It greatly changed my preconception of St. Louis as a city in the Midwest. Such a great city with so many to offer!

This is one of St. Louis’ gems and I love that it is free and easily accessible. Whether you’re looking for the perfect date night spot or it’s a rainy day and you need something free and indoors to do - this place is it! The museum is clean and well maintained and the staff are friendly and very informative about the exhibits. Many of the newer exhibits are interactive and accessible to those with visual impairments - creating a safe place for everyone to come and enjoy art. Right outside is the famous Art Hill where you can enjoy the view of Forest Park and have yourself a picnic and enjoy this little slice of St. Louis heaven. It‘a also within walking distance of the St. Louis Zoo - another free and famous St. Louis attraction.

It's wonderful. One of the gems of our city. I've visited twice, once on a terrible date with a mansplainer and once with a fantastic friend. And I enjoyed it both times. 😅 Find out when the free exhibitions happen--I believe it's Friday nights--and arrive on the bus so you don't have to park. The bus stops RIGHT outside! I don't know what else to say. Plan to visit again and again, because you'll never take it all in within one visit. Take your time and wander.

The only other art museum that I've been to that rivals this one is the Denver Art Museum, and that location charges you. This is a free art museum with multiple floors of some of the most breathtaking pieces that you've ever seen. The amount of genuine treasure they have is amazing, and their cultural sections have a ton to offer. My favorite is their Egypt exhibit. You can expect to spend between 2-4 hours there if you've never been before. If you are looking for entertainment and you are new to Saint Louis, this should be near the top of your list.

Very large museum, there are 3 floors full of art. Be prepared to stay all day to see as much as possible. There is an eclectic selection of art here. They have art works from Rodin, Monet, Van Gogh, Dali', Gauguin, Picasso.... and many more magnificent works from less known artist, but just as spectacular. The newer "modern art" works are not of interest to me. Some of them had me asking, WTH is THAT! With an eye roll. I took some pictures of the eye rolling ones too, for humor. There have Roman, Egyptian, Asian, Religious art just to name a few. There are paintings here that look like they could reach out and touch you. So life like. The restaurant inside the museum has a lunch & dinner menu, our lunch was nicely priced and very tasty. Reservations to dine there are recommended.

Another great part of the Forest Park experience. This was a great place to take family who is in town they were so surprised that all of our museums in Forest Park were free attendance. I told him that museum had at least one exhibit that it cost money but on this particular day we brought them on Friday when the tickets are free as long as you get there before they sell out. If you haven’t been in a while, they do have a new modern art area that has some new stuff with a couple of really impressive pieces. Their collection overall is so massive that we did wear out the family before we got to see everything but we did get to see the entire first floor, and the right side of the building on all levels . There are some steps to get into the building so if you have trouble with mobility, it’s possible to go, but I think it would be a little bit harder. If you have trouble with steps once you’re in the building, they have elevators to get you from floor to floor. I did see a lady inside and a wheelchair so it is possible. Currently, there is a hip-hop art exhibit. So check that out if you get a chance, and St. Louis is such a Catholic town there is so much religious art and artifacts here at the St. Louis art Museum, but one of the things that the most is the diversity in the different exhibits from Traditional European Renaissance and impressionistic art two different cultural art that includes the various countries of Asian art and African art. As a local artist, I would love to see some permanent installation of artist who have come out of St. Louis, and more of how art is in business with some graphic artist, muralists, and illustrators to showcase some of the great art that has come out of the city. But when I have friends and family in town, we treat Forest Park almost like people in Orlando treat Universal Studios and Disney World. It takes several days to get to see everything, there’s a lot of walking involved, there’s always some sort of café or food available except the cost of entrance is much more affordable, and still so much for children to do. And instead of seeing Disney princesses, you get to see art that actually has royalty from all over the world so whether you’re from St. Louis or just looking for a great place to visit on a budget this is it make sure to learn more about Forest Park and the St. Louis Art Museum as a must destination.

Beautiful museum! Memorable visit, but they don't play about their closing time. The campus itself is large, beautiful, and serene. It's definitely alot to see, I'm not sure that you can do it all in a day if you are taking your time to appreciate the experience. You should wear comfortable shoes for sure. I will be going back. I was surprised to find out it was a free art museum. Check them out if you have the time. You won't be disappointed.

The museum is immaculately maintained and pleasant to visit. Extra precautions due to Covid-19 were in place when we visited but there was no wait and all galleries were easily accessed and people were maintaining distance and wearing masks. Parking was plentiful with several open spaces close to the entrance (free parking lot area). Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Several fun items at the gift shop! (But the cafe was closed)

I totally enjoyed my day at SLAM! Got there as soon as they opened and, with the exception of lunch, spent every minute until closing time browsing the works. The main exhibition (German art since 1800) alone was worth the trip, and not only it but the entire museum was free of charge! I particularly enjoyed the collection of Romantic paintings, the West African masks and other pieces, and the Egyptian sarcophagi and carvings. To be honest, I didn't even get to see everything, so I'm already planning a return trip :) Do note that their food services are currently not operating, so bring a lunch if you don't want to leave the premises to eat. Enjoy your time at this excellent museum - I know I sure did!

I always really enjoy coming here. Staff is questionable at night, there was an older man that was rushing a couple that was next to us and being rude and raising his voice because they wanted a quick photo by one of the art pieces but he told them no and was pestering them until they left. Other than that, this is a lovely museum and definitely will be back!

We came on a very cold day so I did not get to explore all of the beautiful park but just this short visit has me excited to come back soon. The textiles exhibit was interesting and well worth checking out (especially on Fridays since ticketed sections are free). It looks like they're expanding the arms and armor exhibit which is pretty exciting. The cafe food was really good too! Looking forward to my next trip.

The underground parking garage is $15 This museum is great. It is so big, it will take you at least 2 days to see everything, maybe more. I personally would like to see just a few more places to sit throughout the exhibits for those like my friend who has mobility issues. (He can't stand/walk for long periods of time).

This is an absolute treasure to have in your city! To say the art is beautiful, and the experience is fun is an insult! I truly feel like having my children coming here has made them better little people! The only complaint I have ever had is the way we are treated by the posted staff throughout. I realize some children may be a handful, but mine aren't, and they enjoy going. And being stalked and getting blatant dirty looks like we are doing something wrong is very bothersome. And I think young people get turned off from going here because of how they are treated, which is vety counterproductive for the future of the museum!

If you love art and would love a place to share some space with someone new as you get to know them, the art museum is your spot. Just make sure you wear some nice shoes and pack a lunch because this museum has a lot of square footage. If you grow tried of the art the park is nearby and several other free locations to visit. Have fun and visit fantastic works of art in this awe inspiring museum.

This museum is arguably one of the best in Midwestern US, and the coolest part is that admission to the permanent collection is completely free of charge. When we went to visit in early March, they had a Van Gogh and Millet exhibition (on loan from the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands) that was ticketed, and 'Starry night on the Rhone' was on display, which was an absolute wonder. The permanent exhibit houses an impressive collection of European, Mesoamerican and Asian Art.

The Saint Louis Art Museum is housed in a lovely building in Forest Park. Typical of many such art museums, they have a very bright, open and airy atrium. We were greeted by staff that seem to be truly attached to and knowledgeable about the museum. They were friendly and willing to guide us to areas that we might find of interest. We only had time to visit a fraction of the galleries but the collections, while not overly large, were very well chosen and displayed. We parked in the free, above ground parking lot which I have heard does not have security cameras though this did not cause problems or concerns for us. Museum entry is always free. Well worth a visit.

We attended the special Millet exhibit today. Even 1:15 on Wednesday was busy. Social distancing meant waiting for people to move to next picture so you could move. Having directional requirements might have helped. But overall it was still a good experience and a fascinating experience. Millet was the most popular painter of his day and the exhibit positions other painters who used his works as their inspirations, with the original Millet. Even Van Gogh got his idea for Starry Night from Millet! Leaves soon; make a reservation!

We chose to drive here from our hotel instead of Uber, and it seemed like the right choice. Traffic wasn't bad in the area. One of the best places in St. Louis , MO. Of course the location could not be any better with the Zoo right down the street and Forest Park right next to it . You can't ask for a better place to visit.

Beautiful place to visit both inside and out. The grounds and park area outside are a great place to relax and stroll and the museum itself is a true gem. Make sure to make this one of your stops when visiting St. Louis.

Favorite place in the city. Free and surprisingly better than most of the museums in nicer cities. Go figure right?

One of these best collections of German Impressionism in the world. If you love Otto Dix or Max Beckmann, it's hard to beat their permanent collection.

We decided to drop in the St. Louis Art Museum as we were at Forest Park visiting from Wisconsin. I really enjoy that the Museum is full of a variety of exhibits yet can all be seen in a single visit. Enjoyed the gift shop as well!

You really gotta come visit this place. It's free, parking is bountiful nearby and they unexpected had hellenistic and byzantine art. Really peaceful place, then go walk around the park.

This place is HUGE. We spent 2 hours here roughly and I'm positive there's things we still didn't see. Several exhibits with countless art styles and periods spanning land, culture and time. Located in Forest Park which is also a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The art museum had several areas to sit and admire pieces or catch your breath and take it all in. Beautiful and peaceful, very quiet and exciting. Can easily see myself coming back many times over.

We only spent two hours here but could have stayed the entire day, there were fascinating older pieces that my significant other enjoyed as well as some huge modern works that stayed on my mind long after leaving. The medieval room was so neat!

A world class museum which, unlike nearly every other major museum I have ever been to, has FREE ADMISSION. Great place to admire and commune with great works of art, or bring a date, or bring the family. A favorite game of parents is to purchase a few post cards of artwork in the gift shop on arrival and then challenging the kids to find the objects on display in the museum. Great way to keep them engaged, invite questions and teach them about art history. After your visit, walk outside to the Apotheosis of St. Louis sculpture and gaze out over the fountains of the Grand Basin or have a picnic on Art Hill. Probably my favorite outdoor space in St Louis. I absolutely love our art museum.

The SLAM has a very nice collection, and free admission is an added bonus. (Even if it were a mediocre collection...it's free! Enjoy it.) It's also a nice location in Forest Park, which is a nice, natural park.

This museum is huge. The location is beautifully maintained and cleaned. I can't believe it is FREE. It is a self guided tour and you do have to wear a mask to prevent COVID spread but did I mention is was FREE. History rich and absolutely full of artifacts from all over the world. My kids loved the Egyptian exhibit. I mean, when you're 7 and get to see not 1 but 3 real mummies up close, that's a lifetime milestone. A St Louis must see.

The crown jewel of Saint Louis! If there's an artist's work you want to see in person, chances are there is at least one here. The employees are friendly and informative. The information desk also has workpages for enthusiasts of all ages. It is much easier to find free parking on a weekday but there's always the paid parking open. The kids LOVED the mummies. The best part is that this is free!!!

One of my absolute favorite places in STL, as a local who hasn't lived in STL in years but I always love to visit the art museum. It's a free, air conditioned afternoon and you can spend hours and hours looking at beautiful art and history. We spent two hours on one floor the last time we visited. Highly recommend checking out Water Lilies by Monet and some of the Van Gogh paintings they have, as well as the mummies in the Egyptian exhibits, those are just a few of the highlights of the art museum.

Had an afternoon to kill before we could check in to our hotel so we came here for a bit. We had a great time looking at all the beautiful paintings and sculptures and everything inside. My only complaint was one of the staff was a little rude, I had stepped slightly over the line (not realizing I'd done it) trying to get a closer look at wether or not a painting had cracks in it. I was JUST LOOKING, not trying to touch, my sister in law had said that if an artist didn't get the proper amount of oil and other element mixed together the painting wouldn't set right and would eventually crack, she's an artist herself and had just told me about it so I wanted to look. anyways the lady got onto me and I had no idea what I'd done at first, and I apologized and stepped away, and for literally 20 minutes after she followed us around. I am a 31 year old wife and mother from the upper middle class, I know how to behave and do not need a baby sitter or scolded for an honest mistake.

Absolute favorite place in St Louis, I specifically requested we drive 3 hours up here for my birthday so I could see the museum again. It's quiet and beautiful, plenty of seating when you just need to relax and enjoy the art, and filled with art history and masterpieces. It's completely free as well which is amazing. Expect to be there a while, it took me two days to see everything, and I skipped half the lower level.

The Art Museum is one of my favorite places in all of St. Louis and I can't believe it is mostly free. The halls are grand and the paintings are historic. Yes there is always a pretty cool rotating paid exhibit, but there are always free rotating exhibits too so make sure to check online or at the guest services counter to see what's new.

One of the best museums I've visited in St. Louis. It hosts many special works of art, you meet many civilizations around the world. In my opinion, one day is not enough if you want to benefit from its full potential. Personally, I would have liked to find more information and objects related to local creators, current or past.

I come here all the time! I love seeing the beautiful art and it's such a nice area too! The Art Hill is stunning and really relaxing! Perfect for a picnic or evening watching the sunset. However, lately, on Friday evenings, a man does paint in front of the statue of St. Louis a quite blasphemous and upsetting piece that is anti- Catholic and how he is able to do that while offending everyone around him is beyond me. I hope it gets resolved since the statue of St. Louis as well as the museum is a common spot where lots of Catholics from all over the city hang out.

A stunning place, great collection, I enjoyed it very much. Had to give 4 and not 5 stars because museum gift shop sells matryoshkas. Seriously. While there is a biggest genocidal war in a center of Europe since WW2, you’re selling and promoting occupants culture. Disappointing.
