Amazing museum! A lot of interesting pieces. Also very nicely suited for class field trips (treasure hunt activities for the little ones in each of the rooms).

(Translated by Google) It is understandable that one separates from an old concept that embodies a partly colonialist-racist view. But what does the museum stand for now? The museum leaves me at a loss. Above all, I notice that some of the exhibits are missing at once. In addition, the museum still seems to believe that it has to give visitors a perspective. The visitor is not docked, as the lack of interaction possibilities shows. You won't find QR codes, spoken comments in an app or on the Internet. It remains to be seen whether it is modern to show old exhibits on trestle tables and to lean pictures / photos against the wall. For that, everything is confused. Conclusion: A museum looking for self-discovery. The admission price then seems a bit too high.

(Translated by Google) In many places the explanations are too small and not high enough for me. The illumination z. B. in the American area is just too dark for me. I found the free wardrobe storage and the nice service there as well as in the restoration good. I really enjoyed the coffee and cake.

Absolutely overpriced, the woman at the entrance didn't even accept my completely valid student card. Really not much to see, most of the museum is empty, only in the second floor there is actually something, and still really not worth the visit. Also there is an estetically horrible part of the museum focused on how modern south Coreans live a normal life, with ramen, coffee and videogames. What is the point of that? Also I really don't understand why use so much of the space of the museum showing colonialism and tourism in African regions. I also find quite offensive the fact that in the area (quite randomly placed as well) dedicated to New Guinea ecc. everything was dark, with no lights, and weird "tribal" and jungle noises. It really is not necessary, if it's a museum connected to the university it should show some kind of appropriate way to show cultural objects, without make it seem like something far and obscure.

(Translated by Google) I was completely overwhelmed by the museum, the visit felt like a little adventure trip. The rooms are very varied, interactive, with activities for children. Above all, I thought it was good that the museum takes a critical look at its own heritage and deals with exhibition issues that are long overdue, such as the exhibition about female employees in the last century and their important contribution.

What a surprise. Great museum. Fabulous exhibitions on cultural topics - especially the second floor is well worth visiting with its changing exhibits. Exhibit on Benin status is excellent and will return for good to Nigeria in 2023! Great move!

Very nice exhibitions on Egypt and Korea. Having lived in Seoul for a year, it was really amusing to see the display about Korea nowadays. Everything is explained both in German and English, and there is a mix of modern and classical art. The museum is not so big, but you can spend at least an hour inside.

(Translated by Google) A museum that attaches great importance to the detail of its exhibition and exhibits. These are displayed on two floors. We were there on the day of the museum and were pleasantly surprised. Since no admission had to be paid on this day, it was unfortunately very full. A big plus is the free lockers at the entrance.

It’s my 7 years-old daughter's favorite museum in Hamburg. Very friendly staff, also at the café, frequently renewed exhibitions and high diversity of materials. We always have fun there. We loved the exhibition on Korean culture as well as the one on "wolves and men". And souvenirs are cheap.

A magic place with a calm and an almost private atmosphere. Though the museum certainly does not feature the largest ethnological collection in the world, it always has interesting themes on display, non-temporal as well as temporal. The building as such is worth a visit if you are interested in architecture of the 1930ties

This is a review of the venue and not the exhibitions quality. So the only reason I have an issue with this museum is that the accessibility for wheelchairs and pushchairs is a bismal. Probably out of the control of the staff, who are very accommodating and friendly. But it's 2022, provisions can be made to ensure people don't feel like second class citizens. I don't want to use the service lift, nor enter exhibitions through side doors.

(Translated by Google) Many interesting objects. In my opinion, however, the history of the museum's employees has lost nothing in an exhibition. Why are 100 year old paper cuts issued by employees with the indication that you don't know why they were made? (Original) Viele interessante Objekte.

Very good and beautiful museum to introduce a wide scale of different cultures. The only disadvantage I saw is the labirynth-like rooms, as it's not possible to go through the exhibition but you have to go back in several areas.

I was expecting more from this museum based on the reviews. But sadly, I was disappointed. Most exhibits were in German (to be expected), but I feel it also limits the enjoyment of the museum for those who aren't fluent in the language. Last but not least, there wasn't much to see in the museum itself. If you can't read German or have someone with you that can, your visit will probably be very quick! If you're into history, go, if not, don't go! Visited 8/30/23

Due to the nature of ethnographic museum, but still in my opinion, the exhibition was a bit random. There was an exhibition about skiing from Hamburg to south Tirol, Benin kingdom, Polynesian islands and South Korea. The building itself is very beautiful but if you are in Hamburg just for a couple of days as a tourist, then this might not be the priority. Of course depending on your personal interest.

We were taken on a world tour through the South Pacific, Korea, China, Egypt, Papua New Guinea, Palau and many countries and islands more ... The exhibits are incredibly interesting, give an impression of the high culture and way of life with impressive show pieces and a good description in German and English !!! We had a child of 9 years with us who took an infinite number of pictures with his camera, because the world can be very colorful and diverse, nothing was boring !! We are back for the next exhibition topic !! Worth it..... Due to Corona there is no gastronomy available yet ... The museum is great, especially for kids. It has a small restaurant with two kinds of cake and a few meals (definitely not a great place for eating but relatively cheap) it is usually pretty empty. It has a scientific library in the back which very interesting, even for children. Only downsie besides the food: there is not a lot of staff so you can't really ask questions.

It is a grand museum with different aspects of people around the world. The approach is rather un orthodox and you get not only heritage but also contemporary history of peoples. The only thing lacking is history of europeans - museum is only for exotic peoples!

Interesting museum worth a few hours; many different exhibitions from Africa, Asia and the Pacific as well as a Native American/First nations section plus a history of the South American/Meso American civilisations which was quite good. Main plaques in English and French as well as some exhibition specific languages like Tagalog, Maori and Quecha. It is advantageous to know German though as many of the minor plaques are in German.
