The Monastery of Batalha is absolutely a must see for everyone who visits Portugal. The monastery is breathtakingly beautiful, the story behind its construction is fascinating and the fact that its building is undergoing some restoration process inside and out is making the Monastery of Batalha even more wonderful! Moreover, the monastery has a very pleasant location, with parking lots, restaurants and souvenir stores nearby. Whoever visits Batalha will not regret it!

2022 May visit. Entry €6 adult. Student €3. Free parking just next to it by the sports field. I simply love this monastery. It was built to celebrate Castilian war win. Not only its cloisters are absolutely gothic and beauty, the unfinished chapel is one of the kind. No wonder kings and queens have chosen this place as their virtual grounds. Great self guided as there are explanations to and before every room.

Very beautiful monastery. Only one small section requires tickets to enter whilst the rest of the monastery is open to visitors.

Quite amazing that it was built in xiv and xv century, the precision and detail of the masons still very evident. Most amazing is the water supply system that is still operating. No machines!. It is a functioning church, performing weddings and baptisms and daily mass.Well worth a visit or two, then a nice lunch in one of to the many restaurants. ( go to the site and investigate guided tours) Enjoyed it.

The architecture is amazing and stunning. The colors on the outside are magnificent. I just wish there was a professional better lighting for when is night. The light they have doesn’t do justice to the outside building.

Stunning and enormous! We went at almost 5:00 pm (most of the site closes at 6:00 pm), which was absolutely the best time to see the architecture and stained glass windows from inside the church. The carved columns, arched entryways and cloister were an absolute delight.

Oh, what a wonderful place to see. Definitely get tickets to see all corners of the Monastery! Prepare at least 1h to visit inside! The open chapel at the end was just incredible!! Close to it there is a cute souvenir shop with fantastic, helpful staff. The town is small but charming, and you get a free parking space next to the Monastery.

The monastery is huge. The architecture of this building is amazing for the magnitude of work. The entrance to the church is free, but the are a museum and mausoleum that you have to pay a fee to enter.

An amazing place to visit. An absolute must! It's so very important to keep and cherish these important parts of our history. We visited this place on my first visit to Portugal and it definitely did not disappoint. Mostly a tour to do on your own but their are some options to have a guide from Lisbon.

We were blown away by the timeless beauty and sheer size of the monastery - like a giant remnant of the past, weathered but demands absolute respect. It’s beyond my comprehension how were people capable of such wonders so long ago in the past. It’s an absolute marvel, an humbling, emotional experience walking around it, getting lost in the intricate details on the walls and columns. We didn’t have time to get tickets and visit all parts - will do it next time. Can’t recommend this monastery enough!

A giant masterpiece of Gothic architecture, definitely worth visiting. We saw Batalha on our way up north from Lisbon to Porto and have no regrets! The whole monastery is amazing, but when you're short of time we recommend seeing at least three places: the church (free of charge), cloisters and unfinished chapels. The visit really takes you back in time. It took us about 1 hour. The entrance fee could be paid upon entering (6€), and there is a huge parking lot (free of charge) right next to the monastery.

One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site for a reason and it’s in a very quaint, accessible town.

Impressive monastery, it's less crowded than other historical sites since it's outside Lisboa. It allowed us to do our tour at our own pace and truly enjoy the architectural details of this special place. Definitely worth a detour if you're going up North.

Impressive, ornately carved monastery. Church was free to enter, monastery was 6 Euros. Cloisters and fountain are very beautiful. There is also a large room housing a collection of military items. Well worth a visit. The area around the monastery has some restaurants, cafes, gardens and souvenir shops.

Great place to visit, you can see the monastery inside and out over a short period of time. It has a parking lot near it, so it's easy to park. If you like any of my photos, check out my photography account on Instagram: @alex_kei__ I love sharing these places with other people, and inspire others to see things from a different perspective. Thank you! Have a nice day :)

Sadly only saw it from outside. Wonder of its interior. Is massive composition of baroque style buildings. Will come back to go inside for sure!

Superb architecture. The church is free so if you want to skip the ticket that’s totally fine but the incomplete chapel is definitely worth the visit

Wunderbare Bauten, sehr beeindruckend. Für ein Teil der Räume muss ein Ticket gekauft werden. Der Preis liegt bei 6, für Senioren ab 65 bei 5 Euro.

A phenomenal experience walking the grounds of this monastery. Everything is super well preserved and organized for tourist visits. The details and ornaments that you see take your breath away. There are people to guide you through. Renovations are underway in some areas but overall a grand feeling of times past. I won't walk you through history but would highly recommend to get a guide and immerse in the story. Very well spent afternoon!

Initially I was not too impressed. The church is beautiful, but so are many in Europe. What sets it apart is the fine, detailed oldest cloister part next to it. But really world class are the Capelas Imperfeitas. Not to be missed.

First and foremost, I'm not a religious person, so I can't realy give an opinion about this place. The architecture is beautiful though

One of the most beautiful monasteries that we have in Portugal! I love coming here and just soak in all that history and little details carved in stone! They really knew how to build things back then!

Very impressive and well preserved and maintained monastery and grounds of imposing gothic architecture. The towering pillars, aisles and niches and statues, around the main entrance and in the interior, enhance the aura imposed by the silence, even during visiting hours.

Beautiful at night and during the day! The monastery is one of a kind and makes Batalha a very unique location. The people in the area is friendly and the options of cafes and restaurants is good.

I stop here every time I'm in Portugal and it never gets old. They've really developed the surrounding area as well over the years. And, they finally put up a barrier to hide the highway that they built way too close to this national treasure. Still can't believe they did that...

After visiting the stunning Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belem, we were totally impressed by the Manueline and decided to view all 3 UNESCO sites around Leiria (Batalha, Alcocaba and Tomar) at once. Basically, the Mosteiro Batalha is smaller than the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, but more or less similar and less crowded so that you may have a less stressful visit. The remarkable sign of the Manueline is its large, richly decorated cloister where you should pay attention to the incredible details. The special part of Batalha is definately the unfinished chapels, which leave you lots of reverie space. The visit tour is well planned so that you will cover all the important parts without taking a detour. There are also many free parking lots nearby and the entrance fee (6 Euro each or 15 Euro for all 3 sites) is really low.

Absolutely stunning. One of the most superb examples of high renaissance architecture. All the better for having an uncompleted section. They like to boast 'the highest ceiling in the world'! Lovely cloisters. Beautiful small round side chapel where several kings are buried. Batalha itself, close to the monastery, also rather charming. Big plaza shaded by plain trees, with places to sit and relax. Good shops and restaurants. Plenty of parking. Not over visited.

This Monastery is part of most tours. Check out the statue and feet of the horse. A great screw up. Don't buy tickets for the tomb or side section as they're not worth getting.

Absolutely SPECTACULAR 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I risk saying is the most impressive monument in Portugal 🇵🇹 No matter how many times I visit, it always fascinates me how beautiful it is. The whole architecture, detailed stone work, the colour glass windows, stories and legends 📖 Mandatory stop and exploring the lovely village of Batalha !! ⚔️

A really beautiful cathedral and monastery. Worth a visit. We also had a good snack at one of the restaurants on the square. All good.

Huge. Interesting archirecture, tombs, artwork. Good explanations inside about each and every item. €6 entrance fee. Batalha is very welcoming, with a free parking lot and very helpful staff (Yolanda) at the tourist information.

Just simply amazing. Go here, it is a testament to human endeavors. As beautiful as all the pictures you will see of this place, none of them come close to the magnificence of this place. It is hard to imagine the sheer artistry and detail carved and formed into every corner, archway, vestibule and entry. The ceiling stretches for miles as if pulling you into the heavens with it. Be sure to pay the few euro ticket price and walk the entire Monastery. Near the garden inside you will come across military guards protecting the tomb of the unknown soldier, you will also see them marching. Please pay your respects.

One of the Many Wonderful Treasures of portugal ...walk in the footsteps of builders architects, Kings and Queens through is 200 year build and the following 600 years of history..... The Monastery of Batalha is a must see Unesco Heritage Site

Incredibly beautiful monastery! This Gothic architecture is full of history. It was built by the end of the 14th century and required almost 200 years to complete it. Since the construction took this long, different styles were introduced. You can see the full description of the place in one of my pictures.

  • 4/5 Anna D. 11 months ago on Google
Loved the monastery and the architecture. There is so much detail and you can spend hours exploring. Easy parking nearby. Cons would be: several areas were under renovation so were blocked off. The circuit was a bit confusing, when you get to the gift shop, you have to exit outside to see the unfinished chapel and then that concludes the circuit. Also, there should be more signage about where to purchase tickets. That wasn’t very clear and a lot of people kept walking to the different entrances to try to purchase an admissions ticket.

Great stop if you're travelling between Porto and Lisbon. The structure itself will blow you away, highly recommended, Batlaha is very important in Portugal's history.
