One of the most serect place in colombo area.located near the road.Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple situated in Bellanwila, Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Located around 12 km south to the Colombo city, near Dehiwala - Maharagama road, the temple attracts hundreds of devotees daily and is famous for its annual Esala Perehera festival which usually takes place in the month of August or September. One of the most venerated Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, many devotees flock to worship the sacred Bo tree of Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara, which is considered to be one of the first offshoots of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The present chief incumbent of Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara is Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka Thera.

Miraculous and Marvelous temple referred to as the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, with a heritage of glorious history, stands out as the most historic and significant among the many temples in the island today. Situated on the Dehiwela-Maharagama road about two kilometres away from the Colombo-Galle highway in a scenic location, originally surrounded by green fields, this powerful enchanting temple is among the oldest, dating back to the Anuradhapura period. The earliest available documentary source for the history of the temple is one of the early chronicles – Bodhiwamsa. From what can be gathered the history of the temple dates back to the Anuradhapura period during which time Theri Sanghamitta brought with her a branch of the Sri Maha Bodhi under which the Buddha attained Buddhahood. Bodhiwamsa speaks of 40 places where the Bo saplings from the original were planted and Bellanwila is clearly stated in the list, leading to a definite conclusion regarding the origin of this sacred temple. Whatever this may mean, it cannot be denied that this temple is a sacred place, as sacred as the place where Buddha attained his enlightenment. When examining the history of the temple it has been classified into 3 phases. The period associated with the planting of the Sri Maha Bodhi during the Anuradhapura period, is the first phase. The second phase begins with the reign of Sri Sangabodhi Parakramabahu of Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, a generous supporter of Buddhism, who patronised the temples of the area. The third or the modern era begins with the re-discovery of the temple by the Thera Thengodagedasra after the dark ages subsequent to the Portuguese conquest. There is difference of opinion regarding the name as expressed by researchers of repute. The general accepted view is that Bellanwila literally means a pond consisting of Bellan (a kind of snails) which is supported by a pond located in the centre of lush green paddy land in the east. As you enter the temple premises on your right there is the building which house the dieties of Vishnu, Eeshwara and Ganeshwara. There is a small statue of Buddha too, very similar to the Mahamewna Samadhi Pilima. Behind this, is the most venerated, historic Bodhiya with its outspreading branches as if it is bestowing compassion, loving kindness and patience to its worshippers. Right round the Bodhiya are found the small Devalayas housing the symbolic images of gods such asKataragama, Saman, Vibheeshana, Huniam, Dedimunda, Natha and Paththini Matha, once again depicting the architecture of the Polonnaruwa period. Early morning is the best time to worship in quiet serene surroundings and engage yourself in meditation, Pirith chanting and worship to your heart’s content.

Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple located in Bellanwila, Sri Lanka. Many pilgrims come to worship the sacred Bo tree at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara, one of Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist temples near the city of Colombo, the first branch of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The current head of the Belanwila Rajamaha Viharaya is Leader of the Belanwila Dhammaratana Thera. This temple is so sacred that there is a long held belief that a child will never fail in life when he sinks under the shade of a frightened Bodhi tree.

The temple is aesthetically pleasing and architecturally elegant place. There is a parking 🅿️ area in front of the temple. It is comparatively cheap and 30 LKR only. There are different god temples in front of the Bo-tree. The temple is very clean and appreciate the effort done by the temple administration. There are some shops in front of the temple. We can buy flowers from these shops and it is 100 LKR only.

Very beautiful and calm place. Parking Available. Highly recommended. Great spiritual location among Buddhists. Very good place to have a calm mind. Bit crowded on poya days but you can sit and meditate if you want. Recommend everyone to pay a visit at least once... If you wish peace of mind, you should go to this place. But be aware of the beggars and people who seek your assistance with donations (Both money & food). Most of these people are not showing you there real face. So better ignore them.

This place is very busy in the evenings irrespective of weekday/weekend. There’s a huge parking lot so don’t worry about parking. You can buy oil, incense sticks, flowers and other required stuff from small stalls available inside the parking lot which is in front of the temple.

This is a great famous historical Buddhist temple around Colombo Sri Lanka. The temple has a very old appearance from its building, historical statues, painting and as well as very old large Bo-tree. The premises is rich with “Budu Madura, Sthupa, Bo-tree, Several Devala, and as well as pilgrim worshiping area. The main building has several large-scale statues of Lord Buddha in three different postures, all the inner walls are flourish with stories of Buddhist literature and the rest of wall have statues related to same literature. The pilgrims can have seat on tile floor inside and the area is not much crowded at day-time. There are number of “Devalaya” inside the temple walls, for instance, Kataragama Devalaya, Saman Devalaya, Wibishana Devalaya, Paththini Devalaya, Ganeshwara Devalaya, Ishwara Dewalaya and Shri Wishnu Dewalaya. Other than Devalaya, devotees are there to do our requirements, furthermore, the items for sacrifices (fruit buckets, flowers, oil lamps, etc.) are available at few stores at the temple car park opposite to the temple. An office has established just ahead the entrance for donations, spacious car park is available at cheap price (20LKR); however be aware with falling coconut at front area of the car park. Car park area have few brick and mortar shop to buy essentials and some sweets. Other than that paid shoe keeping area, wash rooms are also available in the temple. It seems the place is not tourist attraction other than Buddhist people. Last, a walking track, cycling track, food court are also in walking distance from temple.

This village has become the cynosure of all – Buddhist – non Buddhist, locals and foreigners – because of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya located therein. This temple is considered a place of great sanctity and veneration. And this is mainly due to its sacred Bodhi – tree. Historical records reveal that this Bodhi – tree is one of the 32 saplings that sprang from the sacred Bodhi – tree at Anuradhapura planted in the 3rd century B.C. The 32 saplings were distributed throughout the Island over 2000 years ago, and the one at Bellanwila temple is one of these 32 saplings. The belief in the sanctity of the Bodhi – tree and the temple precincts is so long – cherished and deep – rooted in the minds of the people, it is generally believed that a child who treads the ground under shade of this sacred Bodhi – tree will never fail in life.

My Google Review # 000100. Closed down. We visited in March 2019 and my daughter was very eager to see such a show. Surprisingly....rather disappointingly, when we reached there, we got nothing but one old building with the signage as shown in the picture on the website. The locals told us that it was closed down weeks/ months ago. Pl check with your guide before shortlisting this place, as I am not very sure about its reopening.

This place exhibits the traditional Sri Lankan puppets. Puppet art has been spreaded into many countries around the world, but the Sri Lankan puppet art has a Sri Lankan hereditary. The main reason for this hereditary is the social, cultural and religious correlation that exists in the Sri Lankan community.

The Bellanwila temple is known mostly for the sacred "Bellanwila Bo Tree" which is 2300 years old. The Bo tree is considered as one of the first Thirty-two saplings (Young trees) which arose spontaneously from Jaya Sri Maha Bodiya- Anuradhapura on the seventh day of its plantation ceremony. The King Dewanampiyathissa who has planted the "Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi" has invited prominent ruling heads from each respective area of the country and handed over these thirty-two saplings to be planted in their ruling areas. Sri Maha Bodiya was planted in 288 BC which is 2300 years back. The thirty-two saplings including "Bellanwila Bo Tree" are only seven days younger to Sri Maha Bodhiya. From these thirty-two saplings only four to five Bo Trees Including "Bellanwila" are survived or recognizable today.

Elephants are decorated and carries the Relic followed by the chief monk and other officials of the temple. Weekdays are much calm than weekends. You have to park your vehicle and obtain a ticket from the car park. There is a place to look after your shoes. If you are giving your helmets to look after they are asking Rs.50 to put in till box. Otherwise you can donate any amount for only shoes and slippers. This temple is a heart of Buddhists in Colombo

Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya is well known for its 'Ashta Phala Bodhi' which is considered to be very sacred and holy. The history of the temple runs back up to the 15th century, even in literary works. The temple is a famed place among many Buddhist devotees in all times of the year. Mostly famous for the Esala Perahara conducted here. On poya days, it's extremely busy here. Parking isn't difficult because there's a huge parking lot in front of the temple premises. You can be flowers and other offering from flower shops in the parking area. The Bo-tree, which is one of the first 8 offshoots of the tree, is venerated with much respect and honour.

It's a place of significant religious interest. It is somehow crowded in Wednesdays and Saturdays, however the ample amount of parking space and the huge temple complex will always give you enough space and peace of mind despite the crowd. Flowers and other offerings are found on the other side of the road at reasonable prices, though the prices may vary during the day.

This is a place of historical and cultural value with beautiful frescos. However it is not a spiritual place in my opinion nor a place where one would go to learn real Buddhism. The "temple's" main function is to maintain the new (post Colonial) Sinhala Buddhist cultural practices mixed with Hinduism (polytheism) and superstition. The temple is known to sell amulets, often strings of lime and chilli, as a way to protect vehicles from accidents. The "temple" also keeps elephants in captivity to be used for parades and there have beem many complaints about the abuse of these elephants. If so this is not in line with the Bhikkhu Vinaya (Training rules for Monks) as monks are not supposed accept animals, ride animals, let alone keep them in captive. My sincere hope is that this temple will once again return to the true teachings of the Buddha and free itself from the shakles of ignorance, superstition and conceit.

The Bellanwila temple is known for it's most sacred "Bellanwila Bo Tree" which is 2300 years old. The Bo tree is considered as one of the first Thirty two saplings (Young trees) which arose spontaneously from Jaya Sri Maha Bodiya- Anuradhapura on the 7th day of it's plantation ceremony. The King Dewanampiyathissa who has planted the "Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi" has invited prominent ruling heads from each respective area of the country and handed over these thirty two saplings to be planted in their ruling areas. Sri Maha Bodiya was planted in 288 BC which is 2300 years back. The thirty two saplings including "Bellanwila Bo Tree" are only seven days younger to Sri Maha Bodhiya. From these thirty two saplings only four to five Bo Trees Including "Bellanwila" are survived or recognizable today.

Holy temple. Mind relaxing place. This temple is in 119 bus route in between "Boralesgamuwa and Bellanthota" junctions. Poya days is very crowded. Ample parking space available. Calm place as many Buddhists do religious activities wishing good luck for their lives, vehicles or starting a new business. Closer to the Bellanvila walking park and less than 1km to the Pillewa Temple. The story of the revival of Bellanwila Viharaya is closely linked with Attidiya, a village adjoining Bellanwila. This sacred place was abandoned after the Portuguese invasion of the country’s coastal areas. There is evidence in ancient texts such as the Sinhala Bodhivamsaya which records that the Bodhi-tree in Bellanwila as one of the thirty two saplings that sprang from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodi at Anuradhapura planted in the 3rd century BC. Every year the Bellanwila Esala festival consist of a series of processions, namely Deva-dootha Perahera, Kumbal Perahera, Mal Perahera, Paawaada Perahera, Ransivili Perahera and Randoli Perahera. The Diya Kapeema Perahera and Deva Daanaya which concludes the esala festival, follows the Randoli Perahera which is held in the final night of the festival. The Bellanwila Esala procession usually consists of drummers, dancers (low-country and up-country), decorated tuskers and trumpeters who parades the neighbourhoods of the Bellanwila temple premises. Lantern bearers, together with devotees who carry Buddhist flags also take part in this grand display of religious piety, which portrays the Buddhist cultural and artistic heritage of Sri Lanka. I think one of the best places to visit in Colombo area.

A very small place. I do not know about the history here. But the shrine here is very beautiful. Finished with beautiful paintings and Buddha statues. This place is near to Colombo, because of that there are lot of crowd in holy days. Also car park is getting full of vehicles. And road is also getting blocked some times. But place is very beautiful for some one interested in places like this. Like "kalani rajamaha wiharaya" this place also looks alike(in pantings) not in historical view. Pantings also very interesting. I have some in my photos. Also videos.

Quite crowded on weekends. Not a place if you want to meditate. Temple is expansive with the bodhi tree being a sapling of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura. The bodhi tree is now enclosed in a containment area of sorts, whereas earlier it was more approachable. The shrine room has magnificent statues and beautiful artwork. There’s a sense of history when you walk into the building, when you think of thousands who walked the same steps to offer their prayers to the giant statues in times gone by. There’s a large carpark, with shops to buy flowers and other paraphernalia.

Tranquil Oasis in the Heart of Colombo - Bellanvila Temple Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) I recently had the pleasure of visiting Bellanvila Temple in Colombo, and I must say it was a truly enchanting experience. Nestled amidst the bustling city, this temple provides a serene escape that transports you to a world of peace and spirituality. The first thing that struck me upon entering the temple grounds was the lush greenery and well-maintained surroundings. The meticulously landscaped gardens and scenic pond create a tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal place for contemplation and relaxation. It's a haven of calmness, contrasting the urban chaos just beyond its gates. The architectural beauty of Bellanvila Temple is a testament to Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage. The intricate details of the temple's structures and statues showcase the craftsmanship and dedication put into its construction. The vibrant colors and ornate carvings add to the overall charm, making it a visually stunning site. During my visit, I had the opportunity to participate in a religious ceremony. The chanting of prayers and the rhythmic beats of traditional drums created a spiritual ambiance that was both uplifting and soothing. The friendly and welcoming demeanor of the temple staff and devotees added to the positive experience. Google Maps proved to be an invaluable companion in navigating the temple grounds.
