Bentota, a mere 45 minutes away from Colombo along the Southern express way, hails as a premier resort town with no less than 15 Star class Hotels clustered together plus numerous other less than 10 rooms boutique style hotels with Sun, surf and sand. This gives the visitor an ideal chance to stay in one and savour many different above water activities, Bentota has always been renowned as the water sport capital of Sri Lanka with the hoteliers in the area actively promoting water sports from adrenaline filled speed boat and jet ski riding, wind surfing, boogie boarding, water skiing, kite surfing, to a leisurely ride on a banana boat for the family & kids. A little quaint resort town, Bentota is located towards Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Today, it is one of the island nation’s most popular destinations due to its incredible charm and beauty. Bentota attracts visitors from near and far, and is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to enjoy activities like fishing, diving, snorkeling, parasailing, paragliding, dolphin watching and more. Bentota beaches are especially beautiful and offer you the perfect location for your dream beach holiday.

It's was a beautiful beach. Very fine sand and low gradient. We spent only 3 hrs here but kids loved swimming in the sea. There is a kids playing area nearby and an ice cream shop.

We stayed at The Surf, Bentota with rooms that opened directly onto the beach via a well manicured lawn. Beautiful views of the waters, breathtaking sunset views and nice sand and surf. We had a great two days and will hopefully return back sometime soon. Very Clean, beautiful beach where the waves are reasonable mostly, so swimming and bathing is easy. Good straight stroll possible. So many resorts and hotels in the beach front

Bentota is a coastal town in Sri Lanka, located in the Galle District of the Southern Province, governed by an Urban Council. It is approximately 65 kilometres (40 mi) south of Colombo and 56 kilometres (35 mi) north of Galle. Bentota is situated on the southern bank of the Bentota River mouth, at an elevation of 3 metres (9.8 ft) above the sea level. The name of the town is derived from a mythical story which claims a demon named 'Bem' ruled the tota or river bank. Bentota is a tourist attraction, with a local airport (Bentota River Airport) and a handful of world-class hotels. It is a destination for watersports. Bentota also delivers an ancient art of healing called Ayurveda. Bentota is famous for its toddy production, an alcoholic beverage made out of coconut nectar. It also has a turtle hatchery, located on Induruwa beach. Bentota is a historical place described in ancient messenger poems (sandeśa kāvya). The Galapatha Viharaya is one of a cluster of five ancient temples in the region.[1] In the 17th Century the Portuguese built a small fort at the mouth of the Bentota River (Bentara Ganga), which in Sinhala was called Parangi Kotuwa, meaning the fort of the Portuguese. The river marked the southern extremity of Portuguese held territory in Sri Lanka. The Dutch subsequently allowed the fort to fall into disrepair, converting one of the large buildings within the fort into a colonial rest house for Dutch Officers travelling between Colombo and Galle. The British subsequently converted the rest house into a coastal sanatorium. Sir James Emerson Tennent (1804-1869), the colonial secretary of Ceylon (1845-1850) in his book, Ceylon, An Account of the Island (1859), stated that the rest house at Bentota, situated within a little park, deeply shaded by lofty Tamarind trees on the point of the beach where the river forms its junction with the sea, is one of the coolest and most agreeable in Ceylon. The British introduced the railway in the early 19th century, mainly to transport the coconut produce from the deep south to the capital, building a permanent bridge (Bentota Palama) to cross the river.

Bentota is a popular resort town, only an hour from Colombo. It sees many package tourists but retains its spectacular natural beauty and is worth a visit. The sand is bright white on this wide beach, and the sea is bright aqua-blue due to its light-colored sandy bottom. The beach is surrounded by jungle and tall palm trees. Nearby attractions include many temples and remnants of the country's colonial past, like a fort protecting the old harbor of Galle.

Good beach. Very gentle entry into the water. finely. Safe for children. You can safely jump on the waves. There are several volleyball courts. Along the beach there is a path where you can walk, jog or ride a bike.

This is the widest beach in western province. And this beach is very different than other beaches in western province. Because the sand is very soft and untouched. (In other beaches, government put dangerous rocks to prevent erosions). There was no specific entrance to get into the beach. You have to walk through the children’s park to reach it. I am recommending to go in morning or evening. Because there are no trees to protect your skin from sunlight.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. There are also a large number of hotels where you can stay nearby. A place that has gained great tourist attraction. There is also a children's park nearby where the little ones can enjoy themselves. There are really no words to describe its beauty

An extraordinary experience amidst an ordinary setup lies 65 kilometres from Colombo and is named Bentota beach. Soak yourself in the ordinary golden sand while enjoying the marvellous sound of the mighty Indian Ocean crashing against the shores. The mesmerizing view of the sea will leave you speechless. If you are planning to break the monotony of the routine just try your hands at adventure sports found alongside the palm trees. Highlights: You can visit Kasgoda Turtle Hatchery and also go on a boat cruise on the Bentota River. Getting there: Bentota is very well connected with the cities and is very easily accessible. You can ride from Galle or you can take a ride from Colombo. Bentota is approximately 101km south of the airport from Colombo

Dirty and smelly beach. Sri Lanka is not the place to go for nice beaches if this is the “cleanest” beach they have Trash everywhere, hotels not cleaning their beach fronts, and shady people approaching you everywhere to sell stuff/tours

Beach that is both clean and expansive. Not overrun with hawkers and other types of peddlers who are a nuisance. If you keep a keen eye out, you might be able to spot a turtle now and then. The early, before nine in the morning, is the most peaceful and calm time to wade in, so that's when you should do it if you can.

(Translated by Google) The most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka. A plus There are very few people. It is important because other beaches are overloaded with local people and tourists. Very beautiful fine sand and flowers like bindweed. There is no garbage at all. There is a paddling pool for children. You can fly on small aircraft. Beautiful sunsets. Many people come. But there are all the places equal to a lot. You can take sun loungers for 1000 rupees per day Minuses Waves. But he is everywhere. Annoying sellers and helpers. Sand fleas. If you have ever been bitten by fleas and ticks, be sure to smear a child. And yourself and towels. Otherwise, after a few days you will be covered in abscesses and find out what hell is. But despite the hellish scratches, it goes away after a week. There are no drugs.

We went there in Morning. The sun was less brighter than other days because of the clouds, but after few hours it totally changes to a full sunny mode. Anyway the sea was awesome, good looking, Could see through the water. There wasnt much waves that day. So it wasnt good for surfing. But then i saw there were so many water-air-activities there. We had a great time there. The beach was not polluted so keep it clean.

Bentota has a very beautiful and scenic beach. You love to spend your evenings here. The coast line is huge and there are a plenty of hotels including few big ones. We were staying at the Taj and accessed the beach a few times. Sand is clean and one can enjoy a walk or swim here. There is some issue with the locals as you are forced to pay for sun beds.

  • 5/5 Ruchi S. 5 years ago on Google
Entry to the beach is just beside the Taj resort entrance, you will have to cross the Taj property lawn. Beach is very clean with clear water and less crowd. I would recommend this beach for families. Enjoyed evening walk with very less people around which gave a private beach feel. Not sure if is always this peaceful. There are some big rocks with tress if you are looking some shade during afternoons.
