In 1656 (the great city fire) and in 1692 (a major earthquake) caused much damage to the roof and tower, but both times the interior was spared. The monastery was abolished in 1802 as a result of the French Revolution. The St. Nicolas Church was severely damaged in 1944 during World War II, but after the war it was rebuilt in its old form. On New Year's Eve 2010/2011, a flare hit the choir through a window, causing a fire and much damage. The church is open every day from 9:00 am and 7:00 pm.
