A Berkeley establishment. Feeding hungry students for decades. Visit after midnight for the full experience. The sausage are also pretty good and condiments are available free of charge.

Loved their calabrese sausage on sesame bun with all the fixings (ketchup, Russian mustard, chopped onions, sweet relish and sauerkraut) as a college freshman and still a must eat after every Cal football game!

I can't believe of all the places that have survived the last 50 years, Top Dog is still here. I remember as a graduate student, I would buy a hot dog no drink for 65 cents. Load up on sauerkraut and that was dinner. I can't believe nothing has changed but the prices.

Incredible, the cook does all the work on her own. We were there as a family. She took the order and cooked the food in an instant. I took a 100% beef hot dog I was not disappointed the bread was hot and crunchy the sausage cooked to perfection a good place for a hot dog. my family chooses equally delicious sausages. I imagine that all is good in this place.

Tried both top dog and with garlic. Quite normal at $4 a piece.

I love their dog but don't like the bun- too hard. Also, waste so much plastic by not assembling condiments on the dog, but packing them in tint plastic containers individually. I prefer more eco-conscious establishments. But the staff was super friendly and communicative and welcome to this out-of-towner.

I loved this very humble hot dog stop. Although plain, (most likely because I didn't ask, and they didn't offer). Nonetheless this place was delicious and well priced. The quality of the bread was immaculate, and the meat.. omg. If Berkeley wasn't over the bridge I'd go more often. I highly recommend this delicious spot.

When I die, I will miss this spicy sausage from Top Dog. It is one of my all time favorites meals to eat. Only $4. Having a bad day? Have a hot dog. Simple and lovely, year after year. Decade after decade.

If you don't like hot dogs, it's only because you haven't had a top dog. The best dogs, kielbasas, bratwursts, garlic dogs with all the trimmings. It's not that they've creatively added things no one has ever thought of. None of that. They've just taken the time to do the classics to perfection. Perfection.

Berkeley beloved oldest hot dog place opened since 1966. It’s at the salty and greasy side of my food scale, but young people in our group each got two. So there you go!

I stopped in on a Sunday while I was in Berkeley to attend a performance. I remembered the location because I love hotdogs and I had been there a couple of months before But unfortunately, it was closed then. I walked in and saw A variety of hotdogs on the grill already and thought that it was ready to go. I ordered and it took about 8 to 10 minutes which surprised me and I couldn’t figure out what was going on until I was served My garlic dog on a perfect crisped Bun, with a nice hot, garlic, dog! It was cooked to perfection. Truthfully, I would wait 20 minutes for one of those now. It was so good and tasty. I literally bit in to it without even putting any condiments on it, and it was absolutely delicious! I saw the mustard and sauerkraut and added a little bit, and I have to say it was the best hotdog I’ve had in a couple of years for The best price too!!! I look forward to going back to Berkeley and will definitely have another one of those hotdogs when I do. Thank you very much for caring to serve a perfectly cooked hotdog.!!

Worth every penny!!!! The 100% beef is the way to go if you love hotdogs. So tasty! So crispy! My boyfriend got the garlic dog and I snagged a quick bite. If you like Garlic, you will like this one!! I like this is not a corporate feel too!

I helped my old pal Stinkbug Stu and his right hand Weasel the Mulletboy deliver a Standing Triscooner Crossarm to their buddy...not mine Freakshow Freddy up on Telegraph and then we went to lunch at the Top Dog hotdog joint, it was amazing. The dogs were perfect. ☆☆☆☆☆ The best in Crazytown.

This place is such a staple of Berkeley. Definitely a must if you're in the area and more so if you're a student at Cal. Over time try all the dogs and find your favorite. The roll and the way they perfectly toast it on the grill is fantastic. It's open late so that's a huge plus when you have a late night craving. The lady working the grill at the time was super helpful and friendly. I remember that about all the people I've run into in the past. Helpful, efficient and friendly.

Great hot dogs at all times. It was one of my favorite food while I was a student. Start to enjoy the hot dog 40 yeas ago with less than 1 dollars a piece and it’s now 4.25. Still a very reasonable price and most importantly, the taste is as good as usual. Hot link, Calabrese and Top Dog Frankfurter are the best three on my list.

Fantastic food, great selection, and incredible pricing. Friendly conversation with the staff who offered recommendations, and then lots of options for condiments (not many places that keep spicy brown mustard on hand, but this one does!). Highly recommend the garlic dog if you like garlic. Always a good choice when I’m in town.

Absolutely the greatest for over 50 years. Amazing bargain, too. If they added seating, they'd get a Michelin star.

Love top dog. Such a Berkeley classic with excellent hot dogs! Everything is amazing, but my favorite was the bratwurst. Their sauerkraut is amazing, too. I frequented this place when I went to Berkeley and it never disappointed. Just checked their website and apparently I can relive my glory days at Cal by ordering at least $150 worth of sausages and buns by mail!

It's a tight squeeze but worth it if you like all kinds of hot dog sausages served with add your own sauerkraut and pickle relish with mustard or ketchup on a bun. Traditional, good and hot off the grill with great lemonade or sodas to go. It kept my husband fed through several years at Berkeley. Glad it's still there so many years after graduation. We still visit to eat every time we are in Town. He likes the New York Frank's with crisp skin that pops the flavor in your mouth with each bite. I prefer the Bockwurst, fatter and juicier; each to their own. It's an institution not to be missed.

I've been going here since I was a toddler in the 1970s and I love that this institution is pretty much one of the last standing establishments of the Telegraph Ave area. Any dog is grilled to perfection within a few minutes despite having a line. When you are called make sure you know what you want. Tell the cook and they'll put it on the grill. Then they will usually ask if you want a drink (1.50) before cashing you out. What's great about Top Dog (this is the original flagship spot) is the added conversation about the local happenings and weirdos. Top Dog is the number one place for Berkeley Telegraph Ave., UCB, Peoples Park gossip. T-shirts, posters are for sale as well. Prices have gone up over the years however one can still purchase 4 dogs and two drinks for 20 bucks. Can't really beat that in the Bay Area. I always take my friends here if we wind up on Telegraph Ave. They are also probably the last eating establishment open in Berkeley until 2AM/3AM. All staff here are great and if you appreciate the old Bay Area, you'll love this place. Dogs are provided by Saags, San Francisco, California. There is also a Vegan dog called the Bird Dog for you vegans. Tip em well, folks!

Love it! I've been going to top dog for years finally got a chance to bring the kids. Best hot dog stand ever!

I always love getting back to Top Dog. Their sausages are excellent. Not up to the best places, like Rosamunde in SF, but darned good, and at a superb price. The people are always very nice, as well, if a bit gruff at rush times. And it's a kick reading all the Libertarian propaganda on the walls. Highly recommended.

If I tried, I probably can eat four in one sitting because Top Dog is so good. Top Dog is exactly as I remember it. They make very good hot dogs. It starts with a simple menu of popular dogs. Then the guy cooks it right there. He puts those little burnt marks on it, all served on a sesame bun on top of wax paper. They moved the condiments outside since Covid. It is on a little table now on the side of the shack. I like how fresh onions are available with sauerkraut. The relish and deli mustard makes them so heavenly. Great job everyone at Top Dog.
