Nice gallery. Actually did some research before and after visiting the gallery. I did volunteer work for them as well. I assisted in tours and desk management. I even briefly visited the Carl Van Vechten art gallery while attending Fisk University for my History of Fisk class course. We, on the class trip, walked across campus to the gallery but when we went in we went down the stairs which unveiled a new section of the gallery that had a different variety of options expanding from 1890 to present day!! I love love love the art they have available.

The Carl Van Vechten Gallery—named after writer, photographer, and Harlem Renaissance patron, was the ideal size gallery so I would not overwhelm myself with multiple levels and stairways. I love museums and galleries, but I try to look for something more manageable since I am not always able to walk as far or as long as other friends and family members. I want to mention this for any visitors who may bring along an elderly relative or someone with an illness or restrictions to their movements. While in Nashville with my husband, I knew I would like to tour some of Fisk University's campus and take pictures because I enjoy the rich history of African Americans. I was not anticipating such a powerfully creative display as we toured the exhibit full of collages, paintings, ceramic sculptures, and textile-based work. Reading about the artist and professor, Alicia Henry, was both inspirational and meaningful. In the 20 works of art, you will gain an opportunity to witness the artist’s outsized talent. We found out the gallery changes exhibits every several months, so I can't wait to visit again, if I'm ever in the Nashville, Tennessee area. I must take time to mention the gallery director and curator, Jamaal Sheats,  who was so welcoming and friendly even before we got inside. We just happened to pass by him outside as we were walking towards the building. I had no idea who we were chit-chatting with until we went in the gallery, and he came in explaining things to us and answering questions we had. Stopping here, as well as touring the whole campus, was a highlight of our morning!

Fantastic tour by Jordan and Jamal. They are a wealth of information about the exhibits on display here and they really know how to interpret each of these amazing works. I brought my history class from another college and felt so lucky for the students to have a chance to see original Alfred Stieglitz photographs and a variety of unique paintings - they have a Renoir, a Picasso and several from Georgia O'Keefe among others. Bravo!

I got to attend an event at the Fisk Galleries put on by Urbaanite. The event was great’ we got to explore the gallery and learn the history behind all of the different pieces. Here is a pic of Jamaal telling us all about a piece that he created! Truly a great experience!

The librarian shared so many wonderful stories with me about how African American families that moved from the south used to send money back home to help out their families. Beautiful art work in the library

Small but excellent gallery that displays African American artists. A historically significant gallery with a multimillion dollar collection. A lot of the collection is borrowed by much larger galleries in the US.

Fisk University itself is a MUST see! You can feel the history of the space as the first HBCU. This art gallery hosts black artists to dive deeper into the black stories and share historical perspectives many folks may not know.

This gallery is famous for its collection donated by Edward Steichen. However, this collection is now on loan to Crystal Bridges and is not on display. There is little else to recommend this museum.

Wonderful experience. Personal tour from a Fisk student, which included some good discussion about the pieces. Current exhibit is fantastic. Don’t miss the basement exhibit.

Learn a great deal about HBCU professors & artists such as Aaron Douglas, Hale Woodruff, Hayward Oubre, Ernie Barnes and many more. All of these extraordinary artists have impacted the nation's art tremendously.
