One of the best museums we’ve been to in our travels. You can spend several hours and learn so much about indigenous culture as well as natural wonders. The Geology and Paleontology exhibits are amazing but the Native American storytelling was our favorite part.

Wonderful museum with lots of North Dakota history. They cover everything from pre-historic to natural history, to Native American history and military history and much, much more. The best part - it’s free! Come check it out!

So many great things to see and learn about. If you need further convincing or were second guessing on going, admission is free! We were practically the only people inside. Sanitation stations all around the facility. Family friendly and they even have a treehouse upstairs for the littles to play. My only regret is not taking more pictures.

Its alright. Definitely worth checking out. Its pretty disappointing that I heard another addition is being pursued. Tax dollars could be spent in far better ways.

We had so much fun! There was not only a dinosaur (with the skin still on it!) But there was so much more to see and do. I cant believe it was free! The kids had a blast pushing buttons, watching videos, and listing to phones. There was a Case tractor simulator/game the kids had an absolute blast in. We even found something called "the tree house" for kids ages 2-8. It has an actual tree house- complete with green tube slide, fire house, fire truck, exploratory tree- we thought the snail home was super cute, cockpit of an airplane, and a ship with kaleidoscopes! Honestly we had so much fun and time just flew by! Could have spent so much more time here.

Exceptional! And free!!! The building itself is very modern and deceptively big. We were warmly greeted by the gentleman behind the desk, welcoming us to the state and gave us a 3 minute overview of the Center. The special exhibit featured Native storytellers and the land which was very well done with some amazing photography. The three main permanent collections were geologic time, early people’s and yesterday/today. There were so many artifacts, you could easily spend all day and still not see everything - did not know a mummified dinosaur existed. Ended up learning a lot about North Dakota. Well done! And to finish it off, go to the capital building 18 floor observation floor and check out their wall of fame on the main floor. Good way to spend a day.

Such a beautiful place to visit. I came here as a child and loved it then and I love it now as an adult. If you're visiting Bismarck this is a must!

This place is pretty darn cool! I love that it is free also! There was a lot to see when inside! Different rooms with different themes. Defiantly stop in here when in the area. It’s a great break from a long road trip of driving.

This incredible museum is a must-see for anyone traveling through North Dakota. Most people don’t know it’s here. Perfect place to check out for families and we can’t believe it’s free!

This place is a must-see FREE museum!!! If you have kids, definitely go! The museum is great but there is also a “tree house” on the top floor! Kids of all ages were entertained! There’s a space ship and fire truck and so many other fun things, if we lived here we would visit all the time! Such a cool place!!! We will visit every time we are in ND! So much that the photos don’t even capture! They also have a super cute gift shop, great place to buy souvenirs that aren’t stupid. It is such an incredible place!!! Oh yes, and let me repeat…. IT’S FREEEEEEE!!!!!

A fascinating stop. For the curious, could fill from 2-4 hrs. Very clean and spacious. Interesting and well-designed, informative exhibits. The geology exhibit is terrific! The tree house play zone and some very well done interactive touch-screen displays are engaging for kids.

Great museum with fantastic and enthusiastic staff..! Seeing 'Dakota' alone was worth the effort..! How many mummified dinosaur skins are out there? Lots of great information about the state of North Dakota, too.

This place was really neat to walk around. I was kinda concerned since it was free, what it would be like. Lots of really neat history. We had fun hearing story's from our dad about what he used when he farmed as a kid. He was also impressed with what they use now, he hasn't farmed in 60+ years. So fun, we walked over to the capital, and walked around the observation deck. We spent 3+ hours there, and everything was completely free!

So much to see! Several sections of varied content, kid play area, audio informationals, interactive educating gems scattered throughout. Of course there is a cloud spot and gift shop. This is located right beside the ND capital building with a beautiful garden.

Great free museum with a a dinnomummy or a dinosaur body part with preserved skin. The architecture is nice. There is a very cool dinosaur exhibit and Native American exhibit. The history of North Dakota has cool industry points. It’s kid friendly but interesting for adults. Entry is free but there is a cafe and gift shop. The museum is open relatively early and has parking.

This place is an amazing stop for anyone visiting North Dakota. The museums are great, the play area was perfect for our daughter, and the cafe had amazing food. It was a fantastic way to spend some time part way through our trip.

The North Dakota Heritage Center was such an amazing place to go see and that fact that it's completely free is fantastic! The exhibits are well-done and a ton of care was put into the design and layout of every aspect of this place. The Center itself is huge and there is SO much breathing room which means almost no one to get in the way and interrupt your time! We're went early afternoon and a couple of small groups of children were there on a field trip, but the place is so big that we only ran into them once and never again - not even in the nearly 3 hours we were roaming and browsing. The taxidermy is certainly museum-quality - absolutely gorgeous! There were some older gentlemen seated near the cafe playing folk music with guitars and singing. As we spent more time at the Center, even more people arrived and were participating. What was especially nice was the volume they were playing at and songs they were saying were not offensive or too distracting to enjoy the exhibits or carry on a private conversation. It made for an especially calm ambience when wandering around and seeing what the Heritage Center had to offer. We visited the center with an almost one and a half year old and found out from an employee here that there is a playplace for children called The Treehouse on the upstairs level. He absolutely LOVED playing here! It was not super busy and it was also absolutely free. With our son being the youngest and the oldest child being maybe 7/8 years old, there was still plenty to interact with without the kids constantly running into each other.

Wow, this place is a real gem of a museum. As large as a small sports stadium and a complete history from dinosaur age to modern age. This place give a Smithsonian museum a run for its money. Must visit here if in bismarch area. Kids seem to love it alot too.
