Ermita
de
Sant
Joan
de
Blanes
is
a
church
in
the
city
of
Blanes
(Selva).
It
is
located
on
the
top
of
the
hill
of
the
same
name,
next
to
the
Castle
of
Sant
Joan,
of
which
it
is
a
chapel,
but
due
to
lack
of
space
it
had
to
be
located
outside
the
castle
walls.
It
seems
to
have
been
recorded
as
early
as
the
13th
century,
and
in
1377
it
is
recorded
that
there
was
a
priest
at
the
castle
who
looked
after
it.
In
the
17th
century
it
was
a
center
of
pilgrimage
in
the
time
of
St.
John
the
Baptist.
It
was
restored
in
1959,
the
roof
was
redone
and
the
artist
Maria
Teresa
Bedós
from
Blanca
painted
the
interior
murals.
It
was
restored
again
in
1991,
following
the
restoration
of
the
castle.
In
the
second
half
of
the
13th
century,
on
the
hill
of
Sant
Joan,
there
was
a
fortified
chapel
dedicated
to
Sant
Joan
the
Baptist.
This
chapel
was
built
by
order
of
the
Grau
de
Cabrera
in
the
mid-13th
century.
Its
function
is
clear:
it
is
the
castle
chapel,
built
outside
the
walls
due
to
lack
of
internal
space.
The
couple
Guillem
and
Guillema
Maria,
lords
of
Blanes,
established
a
foundation
there,
collecting
£350
for
the
maintenance
of
the
cult.
The
chapel
contained
the
relics
of
St.
John
the
Baptist
and
his
image,
which
were
later
transferred
to
the
altar
of
Our
Lady
of
the
Parish
Church,
containing
a
gilded
wooden
urn,
visited
by
many
residents.
Its
current
appearance,
form
or
landscape
is
the
result
of
many
reforms
and
reshapings
throughout
the
20th
century.
Some
of
these
restoration
measures
are
perfectly
documented,
since
on
the
inner
face
of
the
north
facade
we
found
a
plaque
recording
the
renovation
of
the
monastery
in
1900.
