Possibly the best Art Museum in Rio at the moment. Great location, easily accessible by VLT, the new Rio tram line, close to the Museu do Amanhã. Their exhibitions, shown over several floors and across the two buildings, are quite original and spot on, Brazilian themed, equally displaying well known and new artists. Beautifully curated, each room has its own distinctive feel. The rooftop offers a stunning view of the surroundings, and if there is not a café at this spot, yet there is a fine restaurant on the ground floor.

This is a great exposure to historic and contemporary cultural artefacts which partially explain the dichotomy of the rich but poor and joyous but desperate plights of Brazil. Great collections including some interactive areas - Carmen Miranda’s fruit headpiece is also on display. Brazilians can’t enjoy anything in peace, not even a celebration of their history, so expect it to be noisy and confronting if there is a tour of locals on at the same time as your visit.

It was fine. Different kind of art collections. Free on tuesdays otherwise it is 20 BRL. Nice view to the museum of tomorrow and the bridge. Tbh I went here only because it was next to the museum of tomorrow and had 30 min to spend. Didn't regret it.

Amazing and diverse collection showcasing the incredible creativity of Brazilian artists. On the day I went, admission was free, as was the valet for your bags. Highly recommended!

I had the chance to see "The Rio do samba: resistance and reinvention" exhibition. As you walk into the museum, you are transported to the world of samba through an installation that puts you in the mood for the visit. The exhibit takes you to the origins of the genre through different photographs, music, videos. I really liked the approach to the history, the social fabric, the life and conflicts of the country's people. I also particularly enjoyed the "Women in the MAR Collection" with works by Brazilian and foreign women artists. Chapeau to the curators! The museum is definitely worth visiting. The entrance is free on Tuesdays. If you want to avoid queues, I recommend that you go there in the morning. Don't miss the wonderful view of the surroundings from the top floor!

I went on a Saturday, around 2pm. Was not too busy, great exposition and very educational. Loved it! Note that if you are Carioca, you pay 1/2 the price! The ticket box told me I could not bring my empty eco bag, NO ECO BAG are allowed in the museum, all other bags under 40cm are allowed...It was policy etc. They dont charge you to store the bags, and they lend you a small bag to put your items in it. Just have that in mind.

Good museum. Interesting samba exhibit. They provided text info in English and Spanish with a laminated book that you can carry around with you while viewing the exhibit. Long line to get in and crowded inside, but it was free! We went on a Tuesday.

(Translated by Google) The place is very beautiful and its cultural exhibitions are wonderful. They help in building your critical sense and assist in building your worldview. I recently visited the exhibition "Casa Carioca", which showed all the challenges, inequalities, but resilience and stories of hope that every Carioca passes and has passed. In another session I saw a part with the title "Who is the house really?", Highlighting the role and the idea of possession that blacks had in Casas Grandes and Senzalas during the time of slavery. It is very worth the visit !! A museum should inspire and lift the soul by showing beautiful art. This place is a collection of videos and poorly drawn pictures made by entitled middle school kids who think you can be famous by being yourself, dressing up with expensive clothes and listening to loud music.

We saw the funk exhibit at MAR. It was honestly the coolest art display I've ever seen. It celebrated a wombo-combo of lgbtqia+ and afro-brazilian culture through music, art, and video. Go see it if you're in Rio!

MAR is composed of 2 buildings: a stunning modern pavilion with a great rooftop view, and the adjoining classical building with various exhibits. When we visited in April 2023, there was an mesmerizing exhibition of local art. The museum makes a point of explaining its significance in the local community. Not to be missed when in Rio!

Beautiful museum, one of the best in Rio! rich permanent collection, interesting temporary exhibitions, they also host many music and other artistic events. Some days you can even visit for free.

  • 4/5 Kasia B. 7 years ago on Google
The expositions were very interesting. I didn't like the way in which the art works were displayed (a bit chaotic) and as the rooms are small, I found this museum somewhat overwhelming. Also, the fact that you have to take a lift to get upstairs is annoying as there are always queues. The 4th star is for the rooftop and the views.

Amazing building and spectacular exhibitions, our favourite was the Samba exhibition which had film, photographs, artifacts and art all related to samba and carnival. We even saw Carmen Miranda's head-dress.

Nice local Museum full of local history, from the Indians that originally lived there to some take on Brazilian modern artists. If you have the time, you can have lunch on top of the museum with some great views to the Museu do Amanhã.

A great transformation to the building from its previous past done in a sympathetic pleasently unobtrusive way. Interesting art collection though some not of great merit. However one of the nost interesting Samba Exhibitions and slavery period I have ever seen (3rd floor) tracing Samba roots and developement since slaves were brought in inhumane conditions 1532 by Portuguese and other european crowns, how Baianas tias brought it to Rio end of XVIII C and subsequent changes transformation, revivals/modifications and evolutions the genre has had since, plus throughout the end of XIX, XX and XXI C. It gives you a comprehensive 360 degree view of Samba and the hideous hardships of end of XIX C slavery abolition, wars, independence and abject poverty that lead to the creation of Favelas. Not to be missed!

High concepts regarding the planet and endless statistics displayed interactively but Brazil 🇧🇷 needs to focus more on its own dismal environmental record first before preaching about the world.

One of the best museums in Rio, always presenting more than one exposition. The building is extremely beautiful, there's a rooftop with a amazing sight of the Guanabara bay area. On Tuesdays the entrance is free, but it's very crowded as well. If you go on any other day of the week (except Monday that is closed) you can buy tickets for visiting MAR and Museu do Amanhã with a huge discount.

Im not an art buff by any means but it rained for 3/5 days we were in Rio so we needed to find something to do. The art museum was just that, very interesting to experience a different culture art form and the history behind it. Many interesting things to look and see if you cant take in the sights of the city. If you cant understand Portuguese you wont be able to immerse yourself as much.
