This has to be one of greatest pubs in the world. My wife and I used to visit here a lot when I was posted at RAF Coltishall so when I got the opportunity with work to revisit the area I couldn't resist staying here. The menu is still as good as ever. The selection of fish dishes is the best I've ever seen and everything is so tasty, fresh and moreish. Nice to see the place is still as busy as ever. Stopping overnight also meant I could try their breakfast which was just as good as the dinner. Can't wait to visit again, hopefully it won't be as long this time!

This is is a nice restaurant with superb service and really good food with big portions. We were office group and enjoyed our time for dinner at this restaurant. They have indoor dining with outdoor seating with and without shades. They do have rooms too but we were there only for the food. This restaurant is out of Norwich main city limits with ample of seating capacity. if you are looking for good food, just try this restaurant.

Very nice food and staff quick service . prices from £20 up for a evening meal. The only thing I didn't like that they allow dogs in the evening .I've got a dog lunch time yes evening no was like having a meal with a dog at the vets a lot off people don't won't that in the evening Barking dogs. But that's my own 🤔 thoughts. But yes food service price all excellent 👍

The restaurant came highly recommended to us some time ago and we've been stopping since for lunch or dinner every time we visited Norfolk. Fantastic selection of dishes to choose from, even for a vegetarian. Hearty portions and great service from really professional and friendly staff. For dog owners- there are some fantastic walks nearby too! We can't fault it and we've already booked a table for our next visit.

Ample parking. Ambience acceptable although ceilings were typically low. Outdoor seating available. Food and drink orders were taken promptly and food was served without too long a wait despite the restaurant being almost full. The servings were generous. The seafood chowder was slightly salty. The haddock had more potato than fish! The ribs were good, tasty and tender. The Chilean Wine suggested was reasonable.

We went for a Sunday lunch and cannot fault it at all. Very generous portion sizes and incredible cooking makes the prices feel great value! The staff were so friendly and helpful. We sat outside with the dog and he was dead chuffed with his complimentary sausage alongside our roast.

Amazing place , great staff and food out of this world. We were in room 5 which was a bit on the small side and not the best shower. Nevertheless we still enjoyed our stay. Will highly recommend and definitely stay again.

Fantastic food, very generous portions and friendly super efficient service. We were a table of 15 for lunch, everything was served together, piping hot and as ordered(except a slight hiccup with a steak that was rectified very quickly without question). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Yes it is a little more expensive than some places but well worth it especially as most of us couldn't manage any tea! It's a shame that I live so far away or I would be back regularly to work my way through more of the extensive menu as it was so difficult to choose!

If you are booking make sure you book a table early! The food is amazing and very very popular! Staff were very accommodating and managed to get me a table for food. The room was good a little noisy with road traffic. Role top bath looked very nice but wasn't really practical for a shower on a business trip. Bed was very comfy and rooms very clean

We stayed here recently for a couple of nights which was most enjoyable. The staff were helpful, friendly and polite all round, especially at breakfast, the full English is delicious. The one evening meal that we had here was decent quality and the quantity was just right for someone with a good appetite. The room was spacious and spotless, there is road noise throughout the day but by early evening it quietens off and becomes unnoticeable.

Polite staff, accommodating and efficient service. Food was good quality and taste. Portion sizes are massive so go in hungry or order light bites. Always seems popular and busy.

Lovely looking pub nice atmosphere lots of character. Staff could be more attentive (didn't ask how I wanted my steak?) I had to tell her before she ran off.. Gardens would benefit from a little something for the children. you don't get the vibe where you feel you could let the kids play for 10 minutes while you have some adult conversation. Food was nice big portion sizes I've definitely had better steak but overall nice menu was vast with lots of different things and isn't too badly priced. Would I come again? Yes just not with the kids they were bored

Can't fault this place. Excellent service consistently. Really well trained staff. Always jolly & well presented. The food is also consistently good and portions always on the large size. Even coming here for years & have never been disappointed Highly recommended 👏

We went for a meal at 4.30 on a Saturday…the food was very delicious however my husband did say the ribs were fatty and not much sauce… he other thing I was slightly disappointed about was the damp, the walls were wet and the gent’s toilets didn’t smell very nice… but excellent service from all waitresses

Great food menu. All food coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. We ate outside on a lovely sunny day and the service was outstanding. Will definitely be back. You'll need to be hungry as portion sizes are large !!

Liked this place. The menu has much to choose from. 6 of us all enjoyed our dinner. Very popular with customers so finding a parking space can be difficult. Recommended.

We went for sunday lunch, celebrating my husband's birthday, Wow is all I can say, We had heard good thing about the food and it was correct. It was amazing, the staff were very friendly. 5 star place. We will definitely go again

The Recruiting Sergeant has been a family favourite of ours for years. Even though the food sometimes takes a while to arrive, it is consistent, and portions are large for the amount you are paying. Staff are also kind and willing to help with any issue you may have. I would always recommend getting the barbecue ribs!

A superb meal of fresh oysters and smoked Haddock. Always a big menu, so choosing a good combination is essential. Great friendly and efficient service and a vibrant atmosphere

Huge portions which were absolutely delicious. Fantastic menu to choose from with lots of different options. The staff were all very happy and attentive. We had a few drinks in the garden area to which is very well kept and a beautiful setting to relax in. Our favourite dinner out of the week we stayed in Norfolk.

For someone who has struggled to accommodate their partners dietary requirements this place ticks all the boxes. Visiting Friday night and explaining Heidi was gluten and lactose intolerant are server said that they could accommodate her. She then took the time to explain the options available and how individual dishes could be prepared to meet her needs. The end result met all my expectations and I would totally recommend this place to people who have specific dietary requirements 🙂

Best meal that I've ever had out, it's not cheap but by christ it's absolutely worth every penny and more. The staff are fantastic and if you want to go there book early as its extremely popular for obvious reasons.

Fourth visit and as always we weren't disappointed. Arrived NYE with my brother in law and his wife and 3 dogs for 2 nights. The rooms are comfortable with plenty of space with lovely modern bathrooms. The food is incredible. There are no other words to describe it. So much choice and always made with the freshest ingredients. The portions are very very generous so go hungry. You will not be disappointed. The hospitality here is second to none. Every member of staff always delivers the best service and Nicola, the joint owner, is the real driving force behind them. Her and her husband deliver the best hospitality and food we've had in this kind of establishment it's a 3 hour drive from our home to here but absolutely worth it.

Delicious meal today, a menu that you will enjoy taking your time over and will probably change your mind at least once. Fabulous fish options, I enjoyed scallops followed by halibut. Absolutely enormous portions and terrific quality ingredients and attention to detail (de-veined prawns...fantastic!). Piping hot (free facial sauna with the steaming suet pudding, see pic) and quick service, very impressive given how busy it was. Lovely setting and excellent service, efficient, friendly and experienced! What a treat! We all enjoyed our dishes and would highly recommend. Thank you!

Great rooms with heating and fans. The bathrooms are a good size and the service is excellent. The food at the restaurant is amazing. The portion sizes are perfect and it's a decent price. This is now my go to place in Norfolk.

Great meal, well cooked and well presented. I would recommend it as a treat. Not great value however, overpriced by about 30% but you won't be disappointed

Fabulous meal at this busy but cosy pub. It's one of a small group of pubs, all of which are amazing so although I hadn't eaten there for several years I knew I would not be disappointed! Portions are extremely generous and they happily pack up any leftovers if asked, so dinner tonight is sorted! The staff were friendly and welcoming. Our server was a young lad, didn't ask his name, but he was cheery, cheeky, polite, professional and just added completely to the experience. A great choice of dishes, varying meats, flavours, cultures. Several fish dishes and good dietary accommodating options too. The dessert menu was delicious, there were about five I wanted to try! Only one dairy free option which my friend couldn't have as it was not something she liked, so a couple more vegan desserts would have been good. Parking is available and plentiful but as the place can get busy, you can park across the road in the evening if needs. Absolutely recommend. Also advise booking in advance for meals as they seem busy all day.

Very busy when we visited. The range of the menu was a cut above a standard pub fare whilst still offerings some of the classics. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the bar offered a range of real ales. You definitely need to bring your appetite with you as the portions were generous. Best to book ahead.

The Good: Really lovely pub with great, friendly staff and a nice outdoor/part covered area with heaters perfect for any time of year. The bar looked well stocked too, from what I briefly saw before being shown to my seat. If you're a meat/seafood eater, you're in for a treat! The menu for these looked excellent. Needs Work: their vegan menu isn't much up to scratch. There is one vegan starter, two vegan mains and no advertised vegan desserts (sorbet is mentioned but not specified as vegan). The sample Sunday menu on their website doesn't specify anything as vegan, neither does their 'B&B Guests Only' menu. There are So Many potentials for vegan food - particularly desserts - that are missing from this menu. Clearer labelling would definitely help, but so would a little imagination in the kitchen. As a result, I'd definitely have drinks here but couldn't recommend the food to anyone who eats a solely Plant Based diet.

Outstanding. Everything from the warm friendly greeting, the venue temperature, the open fire, the cleanliness, the attentive understanding service, the food! The food is simply some of the best in Norfolk using locally sourced ingredients and skilled staff for preparation. The whole dining experience is first class and with a lovely friendly atmosphere this place is a must for any local or beyond. Can’t rate is six stars, but deserves it! Thanks and already looking forward to our next visit!!

Went for evening meal out with family. Great menu with lots of choice, I had steak and kidney pudding which was best ever - would recommend missing starter to properly enjoy! Despite venue being really busy, starters out within 10 minutes and mains really quickly after starters. Vegetarian options available but fairly limited. Friendly and helpful staff, and portion sizes really generous. Highly recommend for a great night out.

The staff are extremely friendly. They recognise their regulars and remember what regulars drink. The food was faultless. I had the roast beef and it wad cooked to perfection for me. My friends had a selection battered fish. I have never seen such light batter. The food was reasonably priced for the amount we had. Booking is advisable as the RS is very popular.

Stayed and ate dinner here after seeing great reviews. The food was excellent and such a great choice! Service was very friendly and accommodating. Room was nice, a little small as in the eaves and quite hot and needed a plug closer to be able to use mirror for styling hair. Would definitely return.

I do like this establishment albeit we’ve been too busy to visit of late, but Sunday lunch today addressed the deficit an boy they didn’t disappoint. The staff were helpful cheerful and attentive, as always. As we’ve not been recently I had to have my favourite off the menu, steak and kidney pud and that didn’t disappoint either, shamefully I couldn’t manage it all as they’re certainly a large plate full. Marvellous, simply marvellous

First visit and most definitely will not be the last. We had a fantastic meal and the portion sizes were very generous. The staff all had smiles on their faces and were extremely helpful. The surroundings are warm and comfortable. Can't wait for a good excuse to go back!

Great food, bring an appetite as portions are generous. This is definitely NOT your average pub that does food. The menu had several items I’ve never seen before including my cottage pie made with salt beef which was full of huge chunks of meat . My wife had the pork and said that too was excellent. Visited when staying nearby , wish it was closer to home as I’d be back regularly.

Brilliant place to eat. The food was excellent and portions were ample. So much so we asked to take the desserts we us and have them later. To good to miss. Which they accommodated us. Welcomed the dogs as well. Try it , you won't be disappointed. Book first. Very busy

Called in for lunch, the first time we have visited. We both had the steak and kidney pudding, excellent quality but my god the portions are huge! I would advise to not eat for a couple of days prior to a visit! Excellent, polite staff. Lovely experience.

Very nice meal indeed. Lovely flavours, everything well cooked. Dessert was beautiful and they even swapped my ice-cream for clotted cream...thank you! Attentive waiting staff. Will come back again.

Booked a table for 30 in the marquee outside as a lunch following our wedding the day before at a nearby venue. Absolutely fantastic service from the team, especially Lisa! We were so well looked after and Lisa was so flexible with our requests. Delicious food and generous portions. Thank you so much to Lisa and the team for making it a lovely occasion after our wedding!!

If you need good food for your party, don't waste any time looking any further! The choice, food and service is simply the best. Guaranteed you won't leave being hungry. Also the dressing of the plates is nice but also the quality is superb. I can highly recommend this place. Attached the plates we tried over 2 evenings. Enjoy!

We moved to Norwich a couple of months ago and this place was recommended to us for Sunday lunch. It could be the best Sunday lunch we have ever had and so quick, hardly wait at all.... We love our Sunday dinners and always seek out our favourites, this is undoubtedly the best we have found for many years.....

  • 5/5 Barry S. 10 months ago on Google
My wife and I went with friends whilst on holiday as the result of a recommendation. The staff could not have been better: friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The food was exceptional and the portions were huge. I had their 'notorious steak and kidney suet pudding', (their words), which was absolutely superb. Unless you are ravenous I wouldn't recommend having a starter before tackling this but you will not be disappointed. I would recommend booking in advance as it is very popular. As the Norfolk Broads is a favourite holiday destination of ours we will definitely return. I only wish we'd found it years ago.
