    I've had over 300 sessions with the team at Underground Fitness, and at this point it's become a home away from home for me. Everyone at UF is super friendly and strikes the right balance of fun conversation and focused work. I really appreciate that the workout plans incorporate lots of balance and mobility - I used to shy away from squats, and the trainers at UF helped me identify mobility issues in my upper back, hips, and ankles, and worked tirelessly to help me address these over several months. I'm now doing exercises like deep front squats, bulgarian split squats, kettlebell halos on a balance beam, and turkish getups, and they make me feel way more athletic and way stronger than back when I was just trying to add plates to my bench and deadlift. On top of everything, the UF studio is really well designed and all of the equipment is very clean, in great condition, and high quality. I trained at Equinox for 3+ years before switching to UF, and the experience is night-and-day better, since we're working in a private studio and not trying to find space and equipment on a crowded gym floor. Joining Underground Fitness has been amazing for my physical (and mental!) health, and I'd highly recommend it for anyone looking for one of the best fitness experiences in Boston.

    Joe is simply the best trainer. I have been a client of his for six years. He treats me as an individual with my own needs and goals - not as just one of many. He listens well and asks questions each and every time we meet so as to ensure a great and safe workout. He learns your body and has a solid knowledge of musculature and structure. He designs the program I need to reach my own optimum health level. He is friendly, kind, personable, fun, and a great communicator. He has really changed my life, not just physically but in my overall health.

    Joe’s dedication and professionalism to his job is amazing. I have trained with many trainers (10 plus) over the years , but simply put Joe is the best by far. His educational background, combined with his focus, creativity, and encouragement are just a few of the reasons I enjoy and work hard in our sessions. I had been morbidly obese and made the decision to change my habits and my lifestyle almost (3) three years ago with weight loss surgery. Joe has been instrumental in helping me achieve not only my physical wellness but my mental wellness as well. He Is kind, compassionate and very motivational. His encouragement throughout my continued journey to wellness goes beyond the walls of his studio. If you are looking for a trainer with a stellar reputation, amazing talents and a wonderful personality to get you motivated and healthy Joe is the one to train with.

    Joe is truly the best of the best. I have been.training with him for more than 5 years, and am so grateful for all he has done in helping me exceed the fitness goals I had set for myself many years back. His workouts are challenging and thoughtfully designed, making each training session unique to any other. Best of all, he has an easy going personality and an incredible sense of humor, so even through the painful exercises that leave me sweating and out of breath, I still find myself laughing and enjoying the conversations we have. Highly highly highly recommend!

    Joe and Dan are fantastic trainers. Joe tailors workouts to my goals, abilities, and various injuries. Dan is very accommodating and flexible for group classes, making sure everyone gets the most out of the class and it is tailored to their abilities. I highly recommend one on one training with either or group classes with Dan!

    I have been training with Joe for over two years now and I can’t say enough good things! Joe has tailored workouts to my specific goals, strengths, and weaknesses, as he does with all his clients, and is able to motivate and encourage me based on my personal motivational and fitness style. He is fun and easy to talk to about everything from the more obvious fitness and nutrition topics to movies, books, the latest reality show craze, or even deeper philosophical issues. Training does not stop when you leave the gym, as he continues to check in throughout the week to provide oft-needed boosts of motivation, and he has even helped provide home workouts for times I would be away or otherwise unable to make it to the gym. He has done more for my low back problems than physical therapy ever did, and continues to help me strengthen it to avoid more problems down the line. Joe has always prioritized safety in our workouts above all else, but especially during COVID, by providing endless supplies of sanitizer, requiring masks at all times, and limiting the space to one client at a time. I would highly recommend Joe, as training is certainly his calling!

    I highly recommend Dan as a personal trainer! He is personable, knowledgeable, motivating, and makes working out enjoyable. Dan does a great job at creating challenging, individualized workouts that are different each week, and is sure to correct me on form when needed to prevent injuries. He helped me achieve the results I wanted for my wedding, and then made sure I stayed in shape when it got postponed twice! I appreciate Dan’s continued help with becoming stronger and healthier!

    Joe Howard has developed a loyal following for his ability to motivate and train individuals of all ages with varying personal training goals. He prepares and develops specific regimens that help his clients prepare for athletic events, maintain fitness levels, and recover from injuries. His new space, Underground Fitness, is the perfect space for getting into and staying fit through one-on-one sessions with a dedicated professional trainer.

    Underground Fitness offers personalized and skilled training to people at all levels. The lead trainer, Joe Howard, provides custom sessions that help each client reach their individual goals. I have trained with Joe for 7 years and he has among the most dedicated clients in Boston - ranging in ages from their 20’s to their 90’s.
