terrible place, avoid at all costs. We bought tickets completely legitimately through resident advisor for a recent event. We had actually booked the main DJ for a gig back in our hometown and we were really looking forward to seeing him. We had arranged to swap shifts at work specifically to go to the event. We arrived fully sober and queued like everyone else. Once at the top of the queue, we had a brief pleasant exchange with the bouncer, everything seemed fine. At the last second, the bouncer told us we wouldn’t be getting in. He provided zero explanation and we were escorted out. The staff were very rude and unprofessional. There is no sign of us getting a refund. It seems they are trying to cultivate some sort of ‘elitist’ techno culture, similar to berghain in Europe but for no reason. Completely unreasonable behaviour which ruined our night. People were randomly being turned away at the door. Even if you pay you are taking a risk, you might not get in ! This is no way to treat paying customers. I would give a zero star review if I could.

I've been coming to Basement 4-6 times per year since it opened November 2019 (including opening weekend). Never had any issue with ticketing, security or the staff. Almost always my group was diverse (age + race) and tended to dress appropriately for a techno dungeon aesthetic. Last weekend, our group was denied entry to Peachlyfe. No reason given. To clarify: not everyone was denied. A "certain" type of people of a "certain" age range were rejected while others (namely young and white) were ushered in. I saw this taking place up and down the line; this was not an isolated incident. Basement is a wonderful venue with world class audio and some of the best artists in the techno game. It's unfortunate that they have decided to appoint a washed up, surly DJ FadeFace as the gatekeeper to an otherwise terrific Basement experience. I really hope management reflects on their decision-making putting this guy at the door. The 1-star reviews from the last few months are almost at parity with the 5-star reviews over the last 3 years. Get your life together before you lose more dedicated fans and customers.

An Attempt at European Vibes Falls Flat My experience at this techno club left me with mixed feelings. While it aimed to recreate the ambiance of European clubs, it did so in an unsuccessful and somewhat exclusionary way. Upon arriving, it became clear that they had a strict dress code policy, allowing only people dressed in black. My group, consisting of one French and three Germans, was fortunate enough to gain entry, but we witnessed several individuals being turned away simply for wearing colors. This made us uncomfortable and gave off an unwelcoming vibe. Inside the club, they tried to set the atmosphere with an excessive amount of smoke, which honestly felt overwhelming at times. The red lights, while not too remarkable, added a certain charm. However, it was clear that the club was trying too hard to emulate the European experience without fully capturing its essence. One redeeming aspect was the music, which was undeniably good and kept us dancing throughout the night. The outdoor space was also a positive feature, offering a breath of fresh air amidst the somewhat suffocating indoor atmosphere. In comparison to other clubs in Bushwick, known for their open-mindedness and unique identities, this club falls short. Rather than imitating European clubs, perhaps they should take inspiration from their local counterparts and work on creating a more inclusive and genuine environment for all music lovers. While the music was enjoyable, the overall experience left much to be desired.

The music and dance floor they provide is good. There’s always big names playing there. However the atmosphere of the staff, management, and security is elitist and outdated. Me and my friends waited in line when we already pre bought tickets only to be refused entry with no explanation. As a member of the music industry I can confidently say that the scene is shifting to a more inclusive atmosphere where everyone is welcomed and looked after. This 1996 underground, elite techno dungeon is fun but it’s worth nothing if it doesn’t keep with the times and create an inclusive space for anyone to go and feel safe and welcome. Make sure to wear your best outfit because they will objectively judge you at the door to see if your good enough to go in There are at least 50 other clubs with the same music and dance floor but a way better environment. Go to those. Not this place.

Some people complain about this club but were they drunk? This place is fun and affordable. Yeah, the bouncers will take a look at you for real. Just smile back and answer the simple questions. Idk. Be genuine. Next Dance for hours!

Read some reviews on here and security isn’t the problem. Security was actually extremely nice and helpful so this review doesn’t reflect them. We purchased tickets before the event and showed up at a reasonable time there wasn’t even a line. The doorman made us wait for about five minutes when we were the only ones there just to deny us entry with no explanation at all. Just scanned our ticket and told us he refunded us our money with no actual proof that he did refund us. For a place that says they don’t care about dress code and makes it sound like everyone is welcomed it’s a shame they turn people down at the door for no reason at all. I live an hour and a half away and wasted my time going there so I advise people to have a backup plan if you do go just in case.

Please don’t go here ! I had a great rave outfit on and they rejected me after asking me if my night is going well. Extremely discriminatory, they definitely target certain races. It’s just going to be a horrible experience for you or your friends so definitely don’t even bother buying tickets. Someone is bound to get rejected and almost certainly that person will be brown. The people commenting that they’re okay with these policies are just part of the problem.

Fun when you get in, but good luck bringing your friends who aren’t familiar with the pretentious unspoken rules of ‘etiquette.’ Basement’s stated door policy is designed to “curate a vibe” (whatever that means.) In reality they’re perpetuating a culture that’s antithetical to the entire ethos of techno. This means someone at the door will judge you, or your group, based on your appearance or your adherence to the mysterious codes of conduct expected. Bought a ticket for you and all your friends but caught talking on the phone or taking pictures in line? Denied. No refund. Asked the bouncer about closing hours or coat check? Pshh act like you’ve been here before, that’s no way to behave — denied. Imagine a night club that’s cool and fun but also filled with people who are eternally resentful of the fact they never were in the “popular” group in high school and have made it their life mission to get revenge by fabricating their own adult version of a cool kid club, where instead of being the jock, you have to wear all black and know their secret rules.

Most terrible experience at this place! We had a group of 6 people and when we are waiting at the gate, they directly denied our entry without any reason. They are definitely discriminating against certain groups. They are using a vague so-called vibe check to disguise their discriminating behavior! DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE! You will be the next victim and the night will be ruined.

Most unwelcoming place. Even though we had tickets, door man turned us down for no reason. When we asked for the reason, they came around us and started intimidating us and threaten us to go immediately to the exit gate. Very unpleasant and discriminatory behavior that ruined the rest of our night. I am not going back and will let my circle know of this toxic behavior from their door security. I prefer to be a patron at businesses who respect their customers. Let them be out of business so they learn the basic lesson of being respectful.

One of the best party I’ve been so far. Real dark techno with awesome sound system. We came from Toronto and we had a blast. I saw a lot of bad reviews before we get there and I was a little bit nervous that maybe they don’t let us in but the securities were very professional. As long as they know you like bloody techno party you are fine . Thanks Basement New York for making an incredible night and amazing memories for us.

You basically need to be dressed in a gimp outfit or Halloween costume to enter. I managed to get in. The bouncers are idiots who probably were doing security at a local Dollar Tree or Dollar General before here and I can tell know nothing about techno. The toxic fog machines inside are suffocating and it’s dirty here. The venue also robs people — spoke to some people who got turned down and didn’t receive a refund. Scummy people, dirty environment, and the security (even though I respect that the security are probably listening to Mystikal and not techno) are absolute trash. Didn’t respect how they were turning people down for discriminatory reasons. DJs should boycott Basement. Hell-hole.

If you’re denying entry for no reason and claim to refund the ticket - then refund the ticket. Been here 10+ times and was finally graced with the aggressive dude on a power trip at the door who denied entry for no reason. It’s been fun Basement! 👋

One of the best venues in USA for techno and just curating an excellent crowd. I've now been over 30 times and only rejected twice, when you go in and experience it you understand why there are literal gatekeepers for the space. I usually wear just a black t shirt and black shorts, not dressed like the matrix or anything. There are some nights that require fetish attire, and some where it might be more of a queer leaning crowds and you'll get bounced for not fitting those aspects, or for being a bro. One of the biggest queer positive spaces, people seem to be very comfortable, and there's always people there to help, but not like security watching and scaring you on the dancefloor. The no cameras / phones atmosphere is awesome; Great place to get a meditative vibe while seeing some of the top names in the techno space. Very cheap tickets ($15-25) and for someone who doesn't usually have a large budget this is great, and drinks are pretty cheap although I mostly just get water / red bull. I love the heavy fog, the dark atmosphere and halogen lights - very minimal and puts the focus where it should be - on that mesmerizing bass and crisp highs from the speakers in both the studio and main stage.

Edit: Seems like things have changed over there since that one bad experience, updating my review because this place is really great overall Loved this place pre pandemic, but its gone terribly bad. If you don't live close don't even try to go. There is a high chance you will be turned down at the door even if you have a ticket. They will claim to have refunded, but you will never get it. And you won't be given a reason as to why you were turned down. Really unfortunate, I moved to NYC for this place and now I have nothing to be here for.

Even though the club rule say no racism was tolerated but I feel the bouncer was definitely racist. They kept on asking where I’m really from until I say my family are from china. l grew up in New York and have never feel such disrespect. I’m completely fine with questions on my ethnic origin but “where are you really from” is where I draw the line. Do not go here if you have any self respect.

They denied me and my friend entry from out of town even with tickets already purchased just based off of how we looked. Said “sorry tonight’s just not your night fellas” and rejected our entry and refunded our tickets upon arrival. I have been here DOZENS of times. I have never felt so embarrassed or awkward. Will never return.

The bouncers don't know anything about techno and techno culture. They told them to choose people suitable for the techno venue and they only allow people dressed as clowns to enter. I went here 4 times and entered twice and couldn't get in twice. I don't going anymore. Instead of going to this stupid place, follow the techno brooklyn events and enjoy real techno.

I have been here countless times! The door policy works amazingly to keep people away who don’t belong inside. Lately it has been different than in the past. There are a lot of new faces with security and they seem to be much more relaxed at their jobs and barely paying attention to what is going on or they themselves are partying there with everyone else. This club used to be a techno safe haven and has instead become a playground or hangout for people who poorly represent the club or the space upstairs. I hope management can get things back to the way they were before and have staff who is more attentive and less concerned with hanging out and partying.

Two stars cause the Artists the pick are really amazing. However. I ordered the same exact drink 2 times. Paid 3 different prices, with 2 different bartenders, for the EXACT same drink. They should really have their prices posted. Really sucks that the bar isn’t under control. Also the re entry policy really sucks. You CANNOT come back in if you leave. But the vibe they create is amazing. No phones , no pictures, allowed on the dance floor.

We booked tickets in advance but the door keeper didn’t let us in, without naming a reason and we can’t get a refund for the tickets either. He was very unfriendly and seemed annoyed. Tickets and knowing the event/ Dj’s won’t guarantee an entry.. We were friendly sober and a just a group of 2. Messed up place. No need to go there :)

Had an amazing time, stayed til 5. Got in, was solo and early, and wearing a comfortable simple outfit and was visibly ready to just dance for a while, which I did. Only annoyances are $14 shots, but at least the bathrooms have drinking fountains, and I wish they actually enforced the dance floor rules of "no conversations" a little more. But the DJs and atmosphere were incredible and focused on the music, and I'll be coming for more. I saw this in the reviews, I am Asian myself and saw some other Asian girls but they also matched the vibe of the evening. This isn't a standard dance/EDM club, it's more intensive techno, and even on what seemed to be a slower night they really kept that atmosphere. I'll leave it at that. (edit: I've come multiple times now, once without a ticket, still got in)

Please change your requirements to say “No Brown or Asian People Allowed”. Your so called bouncers openly practice racial discrimination. I wasted 2 hours of my life coming here from Staten Island by Subway to hopefully just listen to techno music to get turned down and be told tonight was not my night. They asked “why are you here?” Tf kind of question is that? Why do you think I’m here??? The only vibe check you will get is that your kind is not welcome. And all the bouncers were black, which makes this so ironic and extremely disappointing. Went to Elsewhere instead, was worth every penny. Don’t go here and don’t waste your time like I did.

I recently had a terrible experience at the Basement NY club. My friends and I waited in line for an hour, only to be greeted by a manager who asked why we were there. When we responded that we were there to have a good time, he abruptly told us to leave, claiming that the club "wasn't for us". As an Asian person, I couldn't help but feel discriminated against and targeted for no reason. It was clear that the manager's actions were a senseless attack on minorities, specifically the Asian community. Afterwards, we asked the security personnel for an explanation, but they were unable to provide any legitimate reasons for the manager's behavior. They suggested that our attire or my female friend's sequined dress may have been the cause, but everyone else at the club was dressed similarly, if not more extravagantly. I am appalled by the club's discrimination against Asians, and their complete disregard for our time and enjoyment. This experience has left me feeling disrespected and humiliated, and I will never return to the Basement NY club. I urge others to be cautious when considering this establishment, as their treatment of minorities is completely unacceptable.

We got turned away last night even after having tickets. We are not from US. But have been living here for over 15 years+. They asked each single of us which country we are from. ( we are Asians) The bouncer mocked us and told us we can’t get in. What an irony that they listed no racism sexism homophobia tolerated. But they are clearly a racist and xenophobic.

This place is low class. We napped until 2 a.m. and then drove over, but the hood rat at the door took one look at my friend who is Arab and rejected us. I've never been rejected at Knockdown Center without my Arab friend ( is this my white privilege?), but tonight the hood rats there also rejected us. My poor friend felt terrible, like it was all his fault that the bouncers were rejecting us despite that we were both dressed in black and sober. So no more going to either venue. Happily, there are a lot of good venues in the area. If you prepaid for tickets on Resident Advisor like we did, use a credit card with good service like Amex Platinum. Call your credit card company to dispute the charge. Others have informed that the service charge is not refunded if you request a refund from RA directly.

As a frequent basement goer, I can assure you that you're not getting in because you're just not cool enough. Make sure that you and your group dress according to the vibe, not like some random frat dude with a jean jacket or sports jersey. Be chill and just know who's DJing. That's all I can tell you. Immaculate sound system, good sturdy e-girls, sketchy bartenders, long nights. MOVIE. It's our techno temple and it's here to stay.

I live in Germany and have been to many techno clubs around Europe. People complaining about the entrance policy should never come to Europe and try to get into clubs like Berghain then 😁 In comparison with Techno clubs in Germany, the bouncers and stuff at Basement NY are really (but really) kind, welcoming and not picky at all. All those who did not get in might not be the right people to be in that specific club anyways. As the Berghain’s bouncer once said: Bouncers only want to keep a good atmosphere inside the club. If you can’t get in, it’s because you might not be at the same level. That’s how you provide a good techno scene. But as mentioned, here they aren’t really picky in my opinion. In my last trip to NYC I was there twice and I was happy to have seen how the techno scene has grown in the US. I loved the big outdoors space with a mix of the basement industrial feeling. If you know what techno is and means, I would really recommend this club 🙌🏼 See you soon again guys 😎🖤

One of the best clubs in the US hands down. If you don't get in it's because you didn't know who was playing, or because you just didn't fit the vibe for whatever reason. It really isn't hard to get in lol especially now as its become much more commerical. Just go like you belong there, don't wear anything too flashy and know who's playing. If you are genuinely going there for the music you will get in. If you are going for the scene or because you just think it looks cool, the bouncers will feel that and not let you in. I have not once not gotten in lol these reviews of them being racist or whatever is funny to me. Im a brown guy and have been dicriminated fr at many other places in nyc, never at basement. Thanks basement for bringing true underground music to nyc, a city that has unfortunately become more and more "sceney" in the years after covid. This place is a breathe of fresh air.

Went for first time last night/this morning. As with everything else in NY, will prob change at some point, but for now, without a doubt the best club to dance. Proper rave energy, deeper techno than you'd find virtually anywhere else in the boroughs. I hear what people say about the selection sometimes seeming random, but it's rather refreshing there to be somewhat of a "vibe check." The lack of one has become the death of many a previously fine club in Brooklyn, IMO... Will hopefully keep the finance bros on the other side of the gate. Dark, booming bass, reasonable drink prices, lots of nooks and crannies... Studio's energy as the morning light starts to come in is special. Can't wait to come back.

We need to get real in these reviews. Dress in black or dark colors, no big groups, don’t ask too many questions, look like you belong there. Stop smiling, even. Don’t be on your phone in line. Do everything the bouncers say! Yes, it is “vibe-based,” so work on your vibe! Once you’re in— amazing experience.

Amazing club. Underground dungeon feel. The people here review-bombing basement with one star are precisely the people who would probably suck all of the air out of the room and kill the vibes upon admittance. No phones, just people living in the moment. We went for the second time last night for the opening of the second room (studio) and had such an amazing time. If you're here for the music, and not to posture on social media-- come here and have a ball

Best place in NY for techno. 2 rooms, plus a nice outdoor area to chill. Crowd varies a bit based on the event, and there are a good amount of queer parties. If you are used to this type of club/party you won’t have an issue at door.

Small. Dark. Not enough room to find a good space to stay in if you’re there to dance all night. Might be good for those who like to go out and socialize inside and outside but ceilings too low and nothing like a real techno warehouse. Music ok but not enough variety within the techno genre.

I went there last Saturday, music was amazing. Be sure to wear your best outfit and know the dj’s that are playing or you may not get in, we almost didn’t. The only thing is that they stop selling alcohol around 4 am so yeah, get your drinks before that time and I personally love the no videos no photos policy.

I was very nervous about getting in based off of the reviews but it’s not that complicated. Just be chill. I wore all black (cargos, plain T shirt, Dr. Martens) and got in fine. Know the name of the DJ’s playing that night and just don’t be overly loud or stand out in line. Stay off your phone. Be a little serious. It’s so worth it cuz once your inside it’s unforgettable.

I really wanted to see TT on September 11-12th. Purchased early bird tickets as well. It would have been great if the person processing the tickets allowed me to go in. Their website warns that a ticket does not guarantee entry, but when you do get rejected, the person doesn't give any reason. It feels somewhat personal. Was it my hair? My shirt? The shape of my body? My lack of companions? They said they would refund my ticket, but I spent time, gas, and toll booth money to get to basement. This soured my experience with the venue, and I don't think I will try to go again.

Just recently went inside once again to hear & see FJAAK. Wow, what a wonderful time. No issues with the door or staff members despite recent past reviews. Eventhough I ahd unkonowly had a fake ticket, they had actual tickets at the door which I chose to purchase of course. If you ever been to Tresor, Basement reminds me of that place abit in my opinion. Now I need to get some rest... :) P.S. Umfang played vinyl & was crushing it. Cheers.

I'll keep this review as neutral as possible and try not to sound complaining. I went to Basement to see FJAAK on Oct. 22, 2021. I waited about 15-20 mins on line to enter the venue. I was excited to see them because they're excellent German DJs that I was thrilled to see. My license and vaccination record checks went smoothly until I approached to the doormen to scan my ticket. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed inside with no reason given and they kindly told me that my ticket will be refunded. I acknowledged that I didn't meet one of their house rules without a reason and I respected their decision. I wasn't going to put up a fight but I asked 'why' while I was surprised. The security guards were friendly and kindly told me to leave. I was a bit disappointed thinking what went wrong. I got over it and moved on. I'll try my chance to go in next time because I would love to experience Basement. I'm glad they're making it exclusive to get inside to experience the real authenticity of the techno culture and I know where they're coming from. I truly respect that and next time I'll do my best to come in to meet their expectations. Don't take this personal if you're not permitted in. It's meant for techno connoisseurs. I'll give them props that they're making it as authentic and exclusive as possible for NY. They deserve a 4 star. If one day I'm permitted in and love the experience, I'll give them a 5 star rating next time. Good luck and cheers everyone. Stay safe out there!

Bought tickets, showed up sober, behaving, decently dressed. Our group has previously come here. They scanned all our tickets, and when we started to go past they said "Where are you going? You are not allowed in." Would not give a reason why, would not give any of their names, and claimed to issue a refund, however I have not received one. Likely their system will show as though we went in, since they scanned the tickets, and it will be hell to claw back a refund. Bouncer got physical with me over essentially me saying "I'm not sure I understand what's going on".

(ATTENTION RACISM) I came as a tourist to New York for a few days and I wanted to go to this place, it looks great! It's a shame that those who work there are racist and only let Americans in. If you're Spanish or Latino, forget about it, that's how they work and we even had tickets in advance!!!! They separated us from the queue and kicked us out for no reason, they didn't give us our money back either! I don't recommend it to anyone, better to go to a bar!!

All of the negative reviews are for people who did not get into the show. Its unfortunate that Basement is trying to be super exclusive and becoming stricter at the door. However, the energy inside is wild if you get in. There is no venue like it in NYC for Techno shows. The place is a legit dungeon with a wonderful sound system, affordable (for nyc standards) drinks, and a great space to meet likemined people who are also into the same genre of music. I've seen Fjaak, LSDXOXO, and DVS1 here all in the last few months and each time was wonderful. Cant wait to be back, this place does cause anxiety whenever at the door thinking I may not be able to get in. 5 stars b/c they have not dissapointed once inside the venue.

There are a couple of drinking fountains in the bathrooms, but free water should be more accessible.

Trash… Try to be Berlin-y and fail terribly. People are a bunch of wannabe try-hards that think some leather and a bang cut make them edgy

Serious question. Do you need to be gay to be allowed entry here? Why are you going to sell tickets online and have people drive out to the venue and deny them. Not only are you completely wasting peoples time, money, and plans, but this is a business model that makes zero sense. Their website explains this is a judge free zone but they are completely judging you at the door if you don’t look like you fit in. (This is prolly posted on their site for legal reasons.) On a side note, this venue claims to be all about the music and good vibes. Real clubs that are truly about the music do not judge you based upon your appearance, attire, race, or orientation.

This place is not safe for transfemmes. There is a bald white male security gaurd who regularly targets transfemmes for no reason he's extremely aggressive and creepy. I was publicly humiliated twice by security and banned for no reason other than perceived intoxication which was actually an anxiety attack due to the interaction. I was threatened with police involvement for asking why I was being escorted out. I sent an email over this situation with no response. Also "intoxication" should not be a reason to be banned. I was also repeatedly misgenderd. I've worked security at multiple queer bars and events we would never treat anyone like this especially gender diverse and disabled people. If someone was intoxicated we would see to their safety politely ask them to comeback another night and make sure they have a safe way home. This whole incident has triggered my PTSD due to cishet male violence I've experienced. I don't want anyone fired I just want security to do better and have my ban lifted so I can enjoy both basement and the knockdown center. Nobody should be treated like that.

The staff are honestly all Horrible horrible people. For a customer service business, the doorman and folks working there, have such a negative and rude attitude. They think they are above you, when you are a paying customer and honestly paying for their salaries. This is the 5th time I’ve been there and seeing them treat 90% of the people at the door with disrespect is mind boggling. As an owner (anyone with direct contact details of Trent Myers please let me know) I would encourage you to relook at your entire staff managing this place. I don’t know anyone that has not had a bad experience being ill treated by staff, for no reason. Terrible terrible human beings working at this venue. They should not be allowed customer facing at all and as a owner I would be ashamed of the reputation your staff is creating for you.

I think what's even cornier than the pretentious door policy is seeing the 5 star reviews from people with the attitude of "You're just mad because you didn't get in." Not mad. Disappointed. I was interested in this place for their exclusivity but they obviously don't know anything about techno or about reading vibes. REAL techno is meant to be enjoyed by those who can appreciate it. Welcome to the future, where everything is sooo inclusive that it ends up being exclusive. Serious message to whoever runs this place: The DJ's Basement books already attract a crowd that is more likely to be genuinely interested in the music, ie. not d-bags just looking to party. Therefore, there is absolutely no reason to have this strict of a door policy. Especially when the people you have "Vibe checking" ruin the vibes off rip with their accusatory tone. If you wanna check someones vibe have a normal conversation with them. Amateurs.
