Great historical park that's sadly not very visited. The park is important as the site of the first official battle during the Mexican-American War. There is a paved interpretative trail that takes you through the history and explains the local flora and fauna. Definitely stop by the visitor's center - the staff is super knowledgeable and there's a small museum and 15 minute educational video.

Walk in the footsteps of history! Great job to the grounds keeper who clears the pathways for visitors to walk safely. Please note, visitor center closes earlier than the walking grounds but restrooms are kept open for use.

The state of Texas has continuously updated or revived the battlefields over the years. Being that it is a battlefield, quite literally a large field, the welcome center, well kept trails and information signs plus cannons are a great way to get out and enjoy the day. Reading about local history and wildlife is a bonus

A very nice park with a lot of United States and Mexican history. The first battle of the Mexican/ American war was here. Nice museum with artifacts and a theater to watch about the battle. Then walk the sidewalk out to the actual battle ground to see where the two Armies met. See the awful ground in which they were fighting.

I had no idea how significant this event had in our American history. This was hugely more important than The Alamo. Sequentially after The Alamo this event secured all of the west states and quite frankly initiated the discussion of slavery and ultimately lead to the Civil War. Wow, the trails are concrete and quite accessible. Both lines of battle are marked with flags. There is a section of the old Port Isabel road, from that era, that was the point of access that the US forces were traveling and the Mexican army was blocking. Very cool and well documented.

The visitors center was very informative and the staff was very friendly. The older gentleman was super nice, gave my girls activity books, sat us in a room to watch a 15-minute short of the war, and went further explaining some articles they have.

Today, I visited the place where the Mexican, American War began. When Texas was annexed in 1846, disputes over its boundaries and ownership pushed the US and Mexico toward war. At the time, the US President James Polk claimed all of Texas, including its Rio Grande border, and of course, the President of Mexico insisted Mexico still owned Texas. Thus began negotiations, which failed, and discussions transpired between the parties involved, which terms could not be reached. In order to fully understand what transpired, one needs to read the story about the Mexican and US War. I would recommend you visit the two or more Battlefields near Brownsville, Texas. It's an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge about this doubling the size of the United States.

Suggest they find way to be open on Mondays. We were not the only ones who drove from diffraction state to see museum. It looks like a great place to see. Take your walking shoes because to see alot of this you have to walk a bit. But day was beautiful and dog enjoyed the time out of truck.

This battlefield is awesome! It has a walking trail, information sites (posted on wood panels like other parks), a small wooden bridge, a large canon on the trail, and plenty of space to take photos. It is a prairie, so expect lots of sun and almost no shade on a hot day. There is tall grass and signs to avoid possible snakes in the fields. There are flags in the fields marking where the battle lines would've been at the beginning of the battle. Lots of into here on markers. You can call a local phone number and dial a code to hear what the info on the markers has written on it (I guess for those who would rather hear someone read it aloud). The info sites are spaced out quite a bit on the trail, so it's a bit of a walk. It is all paved sidewalk, so no mud or debris. There is also a visitors building with restrooms and a park employee there if needed. Very interesting for those who love history or to take your kids for learning about the history of the RGV. This battle marked the beginning of the US-Mexican war. Pretty impressive park for our family!!

Great living history events. They never disappoint! They even show a demonstration of the cannons going off and how they prepared and shoot with the antique muskets. Historical facts are shared with the public in every event. Just bring your own cold drink if you go during hot weather, high temperatures can reach 107 degrees pretty fast, and a hot drink in colder weather. Definitely more enjoyable during colder weather.

When my husband and I visited, there was a knowledgeable docent onsite. That added immensely to our visit. We also enjoyed the short video and displays. The national park service employee was incredibly polite and professional. Glad we visited.

Very interesting! Winds at 30 mph did not help but the history is really great. Highly recommended. Stay on the walkway. Huge rattlesnakes help cut down on the rabbit infestation. Helps to understand how and why Texas was so instrumental in expanding the US to the Pacific.

Cool experience and full of history. The museum piece is pretty small, and unless you're reading all the details, it should only take 20 minutes to watch a video and look through. Employees were amazing and very knowledgeable. I'll have to go back to experience the outdoor portion - it was too hot when we went. It looks like a long trail.

The Rangers were great at answering all of our questions and welcoming us to the park. Not much to see in terms of trails but the history is very interesting. Great little gift shop!

This was my second trip to this location. It's a simple park packed with a lot of historical value. I never heard of this battle prior to stumbling upon it. The do a re-enactment first Saturdays of the month t 10 am except during the summer. If you visit in the summer you know why.

On the Northern border of Brownsville, TX is a National Park unit which preserves the grounds of the May 8, 1846, Battle of Palo Alto. It was the first major conflict in a border dispute that soon precipitated the Mexican -American War. The U.S. Army's victory here made the invasion of Mexico possible. The historic site portrays the battle and the war, and its causes and consequences, from the perspectives of both the United States and Mexico.

Highly recommend to any visitors/travelers, even locals, whom have a thirst for Historical thrill. This less commonly heard of site of American Mexican History offers a surreal experience to attendee. Although, smaller in size & features in comparison with other National Parks; Palo Alto manages to reserve the historic emulence that once was a battlefield. The open trail way paired with the lush swampy/grassland landscape of the area allow the passerby to roam a field of wonder trying to place oneself in the historical context of this site. Aside from the well-managed informational displays, the trail ways are Grade A for every day foot traffickers && offer no complications for a simple sudden decision trip. So yet again, if you are able to scrounge up an extra 15 minutes to stop and visit the Palo Alto National Battlefield, hasta pronto Mis Amigos!

Pretty small attraction but very walk friendly. Easy to roam if you have strolers or wheerchairs. This is one part of 2 battlefields. The other one is about 10-15 min drive away.

This little known battlefield is a must see for history lovers. Try to go when the living historians are there, attired as United States and Mexican troops of mid 19th century.
