Oeste

The
village
of
Ponta
Oeste,
which
became
the
largest
on
Ilha
do
Mel
around
15
years
ago,
is
currently
home
to
twelve
families
who
sporadically
use
the
place
as
a
fishing
spot.
From
1980
onwards,
residents
of
Ponta
Oeste
gradually
abandoned
the
region.
The
majority
transferred
their
residence
to
Paranaguá
or
to
other
towns
on
the
Island
(mainly
Nova
Brasília).
The
people
who
remain
in
the
area
are
mostly
families
of
former
fishermen
who
still
have
their
homes
in
this
area.
The
region
of
Ponta
Oeste
is
directly
limited
to
the
Ecological
Station
area,
and
there
is
currently
no
evident
human
pressure
coming
from
the
potential
inhabitants
of
the
old
village,
however,
limitations
on
the
future
construction
of
new
houses
(mainly
by
outsiders)
must
be
imposed
,
aiming
to
guarantee
the
effective
protection
of
this
Conservation
Unit.
