This was the biggest disappointment of my life. I see that most of the people leaving good reviews say that Magritte is their favorite artist - that doesn’t mean this museum is good. The curators made absolutely no effort to organize or make Magritte’s work understandable. Chronological order (this is not even true to the last room), very short biography at the beginning and that’s it, no concept whatsoever. They have to exhibit a lot of photographs, letters, and other texts that are somehow related to the artist because there are not many really famous or recognizable pieces of his work. This wouldn’t be a problem at all if they were explained or at least translated to English. A lot of the times they don’t even bother to translate the titles, there’s just three almost identical French labels instead! A good curator can make an enjoyable museum experience out of the smallest, most insignificant collections of art - a very good example is the Dalí Paris. Here, the interiors are outdated, the lighting is awful, there are reflections and glares on all the paintings but the lack of effort is the most annoying. Their only luck is that Magritte is such an interesting artist that almost anyone can enjoy his works just by looking at them. If you want a deeper understanding of his motivations, (Belgian) surrealism, or even his life, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE.

I bought the ticket to this museum along with the one for the museum of Fine Arts. Magritte had a very peculiar style, which may not be appealing for everyone. Though if modernist movement catches your attention, you can enjoy this museum.

It is true it was not in the original place, but the audioguide system with colours and numbers was so confusing I ended up listening to the tracks in order. I would have listened to them all, but the air conditioning was super cold and it was a rainy day, so i decided to leave. still interesting.

Wonderful collection of his works. There were some translations which were helpful in telling the artists overall life story. The galleries were nicely laid out and the museum had just the right amount of pieces - it didn’t feel overwhelming. Entering was a bit confusing - I bought the ticket and the art museum next door then had to cross thought corridors and down stairs and up an elevators to get to the museum - I was a bit confused and frustrated.

Great art, enjoyed the layout and detail of Magritte. All his quotes on the wall were in French, so a little Google translate required, but the explanations and his life story had English translations. Rooms were very dry and warm, and the lighting on some of the artwork was reflecting at weird angles but not enough to give it a low score.

Best Museum for Magritte's work worldwide, definitely a must-see, but one star less because many of the paintings are framed under glass that reflects too much and does not allow the visitor to view the artwork without light and background mirroring in the glass.

The museum is interesting but it is rather small. It has only some of the most well known paintings from Magritte. Plan for an 1 hour visit. I've included some of the painting I liked the most. 😀

The Magritte museum is currently under renovation so the exhibit is temporarily moved down the street inside the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. You can buy your tickets there and go to the -4 level to visit the museum. I’m not sure if it showcases all the works that normally would be on display. It took about 1.5 hours to go at a slow pace through the museum. Lots of interesting paintings to make you ponder.

The works on display are good, although the most well known ones aren't part of the exhibition. However, the exhibition itself is not great. Firstly, since there was a long line at the ticket office (which is a few minutes away from the actual museum), we decided to get our tickets online. When we then went in and asked for the audio guides, we were told they can only be purchased in the ticket office, even though there was a cash desk with audio guides right next to the entrance. I don't get why in 2022, they don't have an app for the audio guide. Not only is it more convenient, but also more hygienic. Next, the space is very dark and spotlights illuminate the paintings, which causes annoying reflections. Lastly, Magrittes quotes are only displayed in French and Dutch. I translated some of them using Google and they were very interesting, but didn't want to do that for all of them. In the shop at the end (!) you can buy a booklet with all quotes in other languages as well. In summary, we saw a poorly lit exhibition without any explanation (apart from a few sentences on his live that were translated to English).

Magritte as an artist is exceptional, his works are pure delight for all senses. This collection makes you admire even more Magritte, so many paintings from all his eras, if you want to see only the famous ones... well they are not here, instead there are so many great works and artifacts from his artistic life... BUT someone must mention the really bad lighting conditions here that makes the visit not worthy... In the year 2023 this is just scandalous!

Great museum! We enjoyed it so much! I was not aware before we visited that it is a part of a larger Art Museum with also a great Old Masters collection. They told us the Magritte will take one hour and the old masters- two hours. Well, I am glad that we visited Magritte one day, and it took us three hours. Then we went to the old masters collection and it took us the whole day. We took a lunch break and returned. The collection is larger than you first think. When you think you are done, there is another floor, and then another. We were tired but happy!

Not really Musée Magritte, but Mont des Arts, so right next to it. Also…Brussels, you’ve got some wild wolves on the loose! Say hello to The Wolf of Beirut and Broummana Bobee! Awoo!

Nice experience. 3 floors of exposition are only dedicated to Magritte paintings. Staff well organized with anti covid safety measurements. I suggest it to all art lovers that want to live a pleasant visit of Bruxelles at 360 °

I visited the exhibition with my kids (10 and 13 years) they were less interested ..but I found that as a very good exhibition with an overview about Magritt’s body of works.

Avoid going during the weekend if possible. The fact that we had booked a ticket with an entry time didn't matter as we'd still have to queue for ~1 hour. Horrible lighting, minimum description, not exactly engaging routes.. But hey, it's Magritte, so we ended up having a fairly good time anyway. And great souvenir shop.

The Magritte museum is a three-floor museum which has the most amount of works made by Rene Magritte in the world!! It is also chronologically organized, walking you through his life. The only problem that I had with this museum is the kids-teens-adults different audio guides, as I don’t understand the point of it.(you might be thinking that it’s based on how appropriate the painting is, but I saw a painting of a naked woman bathing that had the kids audio guide.)

René Magritte has been one of my favourite artists ever. His art has always been a great inspiration for me. I believe his paintings have soooo many and complex meanings to decipher. His art is rich in messages and there are many stories behind his works. Hence, I was beyond happy that I could visit the René Magritte Museum in Brussels and could have an amazing experience! It is worth to discover the museum shop, too.

I’m a big fan of Magritte’s art and creative method, so it was a dream come true to see his paintings. Plus they had a special exhibition “Dali x Magritte”, and I knocked off two in one day 🤓

For fans of surrealism this is your place. For me it was a learning experience even if that is not my thing. So all told a good job by the curators

Magritte is a symbol of Brussels. His images and paintings are all over the city. For people, who want to learn more about Magritte is a must to visit this museum. The ticket to Musée Magritte is 10 €, if you take it together with ticket to museum of Fine Arts, it’s 15 € together. I recommend to take for both. The start is on 3d floor and the finish is on 1st, each floor is a different part of life Magritte, for more understanding I recommend to take audio guide. It helps understand his paintings better. At rainy and cold weather, it’s so good choice to visit it.

What a gem. I recommend getting the ticket that allows access to the Magritte, Fin de siècle and Old Masters museums. I spent 5 hours here and discovered new favorites. The work is presented at a good pace with multilingual explanations (even without the audio guide). There are free lockers for larger bags and the museum is comfortably air conditioned. Of particular note is the exhibit that poses critical questions surrounding the colonial history and repatriation of art. Finally, a museum that dares to consider art in the context of inclusion and justice. The immersive exhibit of some of Bruegel the Elder’s work was also very engaging. I really recommend these museums.

Absolutely worth a visit. Could easily spend 2-3 hours here alone. Air-conditioned and clean, spacious and with most descriptions available in English too!

I went to this museum in a whim as something to do before I went to the airport. I wish I'd had time to spend the whole day here! It was a great exposition of Rene Magritte's life and artwork. All 3 floors were beautifully curated and greatly exceeded my expectations. The art is surreal, but also wonderfully relatable. Will come back if I'm in Brussels again.

Meeting the life and work of one of the greatest surrealist artists René Magritte in Magritte Museum is a necessary and enjoyable visit for every art lover. There is also another René Magritte Museum in Brussels that it's actually the artist's house, but it doesn't have so many paintings and artwork.

stunning art pieces from the famous surrealist artist rene magritte. nicely done with the separation of the three floors with historical information about his life in the beginning of each floor.

An excellent access to the work and the art of Magritte Visiting by floors covering different periods of the artist production Interesting focus on its most well-known master pieces Make sure to visit the shop full of funny goodies linked to Magritte work

I really liked the visit of Magritte Museum. The visit is well organised. After clearing security and dropping your belongings in the free cloakroom, you are guided towards the several visits (three choices at the time I visited). The visit is structured chronologically and goes over the life of the painter and ends with the Magritte gift shop. There's a 'general' gift shop at the exit of the museum.

Interesting and poetic. It would be perfect if it had a little more explanation (because for beginners to surrealism, like me, it can be a little hard to understand this artist).

  • 4/5 Calypso M. 1 year ago on Google
Great exhibition of Magritte’s work. Like mentioned by others, it would have been nice to have had explanations next to the pieces of art but thankfully it’s easy to enjoy Magritte’s work without the deeper meaning. I also agree that the lighting needs to be improved, especially on darker pieces of work. Really detracted at times. Overall a good exhibition but improvements could be made.

Really cool museum! It shows the entire life and work of Magritte, and does it very well! To me personally Magritte was much more interesting than the other collections.

We tried to find information about if we could leave our bags (1 normal backpack, 1 overnight bag) and the website said they had lockers so we went to the museum. Once we were there the lady said we couldn't store them because the lockers are used for people to put their coats in, the coat hangers were not used at the moment (Corona things). So we asked why it was not on their website and she said it was and she could show us if we wanted. It took her quite some time to find the information somewhere under 'Corona regulations'. End of the story: she advised us to go to Brussel central station for lockers, once we walked over there: closed lockers! We were quite upset and decided to skip the museum. Its a shame they didn't give us any options. Our bags would have fit easy in the lockers they had. And i know its difficult with the Corona regulations, but this was unnecessary in my opinion.

Really enjoyed seeing Magritte's work. Ticket was included with the 'Old Masters' ticket. So I got to see both for 15 euro. Good showcase of Magritte's work, if you do go it's worth getting the audioguide. Nice gallery. Could have more translations in English. Lots to see from a prolific artist, who I think is rather funny in his naming of pieces.

  • 4/5 Niels de Z. 4 months ago on Google
Okay. Not all text is in English too, mostly French. It takes some time to find the entrance via an elevator and than 3 levels done several halls. Same entrance as the old museum, you have to buy a seperate ticket for that part.

  • 5/5 Chiara P. 2 years ago on Google
The exposition was absolutely stunning! It was really well planned and chronologically organised. I deeply suggest to have the tour with the audio-guide, otherwise you’ll probably feel lost in front of the complexity of Magritte’s simpleness! Maybe they could improve the wheelchair service, but it was still fine! Really nice gift-shop too!

I never get bored of seeing magritte s painting. Been here 3 times when I visited Brussels. To be able to study his style thru transition of period, thinking process, humour, sarcasm. A true artist.

That's definitely something you must see in Brussels. Magritte Museum is a top of avant-garde art! It was such a pleasure to see the original works of him.

Beautiful museum. Saw many incredible paintings didn’t know existed and where simply breathtaking. Amazing artist and the museums honors him correctly. If you like art you must simply go. I bought my tickets in advance but you can also buy them there.

Szép kiálitás ! This made me think a lot and have some interesting conversations about the absurdities which are the seeming norms in forms of older "Beaux Arts". It showcases the phases through which the artist and others of his time went through in the twentieth century. Philosophical quotes which make one ponder about everything and nothing.

Closed for maintenance but you can still visit the collection in the art museum next to it. There are lego bricks to play and the collection is very extensive. Very impressed by all the art work.

  • 4/5 Peter W. 8 months ago on Google
Great to see a good range of Magrittes. I liked the spaces and hanging. I tend to think of Magritte's work as fairly graphic, not especially painterly, and as easily enjoyed in a decent book as reality, but there was definitely surface and brushwork to appreciate, and, of course scale. Face to face with the originals is always best.

Went here for a lecture. Was late for 10 minutes because couldn't figure out where to enter, I wish there were more signs to the entrance (outside on the street too) The lecturer was nice, I just wish she would finish the lecture on a more well thought out note.

Lovely museum with all of Magritte's astounding paintings situated in a nice expo. Tickets are cheap and the gift shop has interesting stuff so would recommend!

  • 3/5 Arsalan 10 months ago on Google
You can see some masterpieces by Rene Magritte, Rubens, Brugel (father and son), Frans Hals, Van dyck, …. The audio guide was not that much helpful for Magritte paintings. I expect to hear some notes about symbol he used in his paintings our some analysis but there wasn’t that much information in audio guide. Also I prefer to have a headset for audio guide which It didn’t have and it was a little harder to use. I think as this museum is really big and there are many masterpieces to see there must be a cafe inside the museum to have rest a little because it takes time to see all paintings. For me without it takes about 4 hours (without checking all audio guides). But for sure as there are many masterpieces there I recommend this museum. Do not miss Rubens it was wonderful

  • 4/5 maria 9 months ago on Google
a little bit smaller than expected but the original building was under construction! 3€ for students which is perfect (even though i think museums/art exhibitions should be free for everyone)

  • 4/5 cm-bsr 2 years ago on Google
A very good collection of Magritte's lesser known or even unknown works. You won't find his most famed pieces here, that's not at all what this museum is about. But you will find plenty of his more intimate pieces and gather some wonderful insights into the life, times and works of this most remarkable artist. Maybe this museum is not for the masterpiece glory hunters, but this place is definitely worth a visit if you are in Brussels and have a soft spot for Rene.

  • 4/5 Cori N. 10 months ago on Google
We bought the Museum + ticket to have access to all 8 levels. There was a lot to see and it was not too crowded. A good indoor activity in Brussels.

  • 5/5 Pamela P. 1 year ago on Google
The collection is amazing, it really takes you on a journey about his life and work. You can see it within 2 hours. They don’t have the most famous pieces but definitely a really nice collection. Worth the visit!

  • 5/5 Oom N. 10 months ago on Google
It was under renovation during the time I visited. Somehow the route is confusing and the audio guide numbers don’t match. Most of Magritte’s famous pieces are not here. Realize hope the new renovation will improve the experience and makes it more enjoyable.

  • 5/5 Alan 2 years ago on Google
An extensive and well curated exhibit detailing Magritte’s life chronologically, and the interesting details behind many pieces. Getting an audio guide was really helpful. However, you should know that many of Magritte’s more iconic pieces are not at this museum.

  • 4/5 James S. 1 year ago on Google
The collection of this museum is amazing, I can't say the same of the museography. Some of the works are outside of line of view, some lights reflect on the oil paintings so bad that you have to be on the other side of the room to look at the work of art. The same with the TVs in front of paintings with glass, so the reflection of the TV doesn't allow you to see the painting correctly. I wasn't able to find anyone that could help me obtain the audio guide so I wasn't able to check how it was. Also, the nonsense of going to another building to buy the tickets is kind of annoying.

Interesting museum. The exhibition was divided in four sections/floors. Good access (elevator and stairs), nice museum shop. Friendly staff.
