Don't believe what Google Maps tells you. This museum is closed completely. In 2021 it will reopen in a brand new building in City Park near Heroes Square. By all means go to see the exterior of the building to view the large collection of busts and monuments to notable Hungarians.

I'm sorry but a huge disappointment. I had very high expectations for this, as it is a national ethnography museum. I went with great hope as they moved to the new building. There is very little to see!! I paid 1700 ft to see the whole exhibition. only 3 rooms was available. I'm not kidding. Which they don’t have to much things to show. I didn't think they would open a huge museum without fully carrying the items. The building itself, the staff, the hygiene everything is amazing. I would never say anything to that. It’s really interesting to see this kinda building. It’s really good and unique. But we should talk about items they have not just building itself. Budapest has amazing museums and pieces. I think this was the worst museum I've ever been to. Bc it’s not even ready. I sint think whole National museum have just this items. I don’t think so. The only logical explanation is they didn’t carry whole items. I read the comments I thought I have to go. If you want to go I think you should wait like 1 year to them to carry every item or at least half of it. But beside this one if you want to see just go and buy 1 hour ticket than maybe you will not feel bad like me.

The website vague says what kind of exhibitions it currently has. So please check, as it was recently reopened, it does not yet offer the full collection. The museum building is interesting, a lot of stairs everywhere. I love the recreation of little Budapest, where you can use an iPad’s VR function to check out all the historic places, that’s very cool. The ethnography exhibition was nice, still waiting for the permanent one. There’s also some kind of coworking space, really nice. Overall, I recommend this place, but maybe come in half a year until they finish everything.

Absolutely loved it!! I was waiting for the museum to be completed and open with great expectation and it didn't disappoint. The space is massive and contemporary, sleek, and all the content is in double language, so in English too. The architecture is unusual hence interesting and beautiful, both inside and outside. The ceramics exhibition (free of charge) is lovely, colourful and well presented, taking up two walls on the spacious floor, -2, where a ticket/information office also is. The other two are upstairs, one at each entrance. The setup actually makes the visitor stop and marvel at the artifacts, which wouldn't probably happen if they were presented in a more conventional way! Again on the ground floor, there's a city model of Budapest in 1910, with tablets that let you choose categories of buildings as you point the device to the model and the different parts of the city, which you can then choose and get to know more, and another one of the Liget Project (the renovation of the city park, which is ongoing). There are two spots where video clips are shown and you can sit, with the other visitors passing by. While you walk up and down, as the structure inside is curved as you can see it from outside, you may see the temporary exhibition spaces beneath you through glass walls and have a peak at the objects on display (for these exibitions there's a ticket, all-in costs 3000 Huf). Overall, the space flows from one side to the other with no interruptions and you feel engrossed and can interact with it, so much so that everyone was really having a good time. Bar, restaurant, book shop and ethnoshop (with various objects on sale) are all very contemporary as well. Finally the landscaped roof garden 😍. You need to climb up and down and experience the majesty of it, while you can sit around and take in the views too. It really was an amazing EXPERIENCE that I would recommend to anyone in Budapest!

(Translated by Google) Temporarily closed until next year for renovation, it still shows off in its majestic venue, which once housed the Palace of Justice. Imposing and with a somewhat rhetorical architecture, it contrasts in the forms and volumes with the more eclectic and imaginative Parliament, whose palace stands practically opposite. Pedestrians (and trams) have recently been returned to the square in front, the historical stage of events, sometimes even bloody, which have characterized the troubled history of this country. @gargio76

The museum recently moved into a new and larger building than they were in. It felt as if there wasn't much displayed. What was there was displayed well, there just wasn't much inside. The building is conveniently located in City Park and is a feast for the eyes. Shaped as a Skateboard Ramp, the roof is grass with walking ramps up both sides and seating areas. The museum is well laid out. Signage is in both English and Hungarian. There is a cloak room to check coats and backpacks. An excellent cafeteria, meeting rooms and a nice gift shop. Be sure to look for the Kolodko mini sculpture located near the museum.

New, interesting and stylish museum in a good location in the park. The architecture with the wings and metal ornament is very modern and attractive. Inside the museum there is an expo with Budapest 3D map, stands with ceramics and main expositions. Some of exhibits are interactive, some - kinda boring, like in every museum. I'd recommend the new expo "We have arrived", it's worth to be seen.

This used to be a parking lot. They built this double-winged structure with gardens on the wings and moved the parking lots underground. It is a very inspiring architectural fete that shows what is possible when the imagination is allowed to run free. The Google maps photo is in need of a refresh because it still shows the parking lot.

I think it should be explained that the permanent exhibition is not quite finished yet. Otherwise, visitors are likely to be disappointed with the small collection on display with minimal explanatory texts. Apparently, the rest of the permanent collection will be available to view from May 2024. Otherwise, the building is interesting on the outside and provides good views of the neighbouring buildings from the tops of the slopes.

Fantastic place! Architecture of this building is incredible. So unique and thought through details. Loved the landscaping on the roof. The staff is kind, helpful and everyone speaks English. Exhibits are super cool so are the temporary exhibitions. My favourites are in photos. They have a nice gift shop and a restaurant with good, not junk food.

A vast and striking building but largely style over substance. There is so much wasted space and far too many steps - often poorly designed and potentially dangerous ones at that. Worth a visit for the interactive relief map of Budapest. I hope that it will improve if/when there is more of the ethnographic collection on display.

Saw an advert for this place at the airport so went out of our way to visit. The outside and overall architecture is quite something. The stairs are grated metal so slightly unnerving the higher you get - just don’t look down! Felt the staff were particularly unfriendly, unfortunately. I think the ticketing system was bizarre and confusing. How is one to know what exhibit is what? There is also an extra ticket to buy to use a camera (first I’ve ever seen this for general use rather than commercial use). It wasn’t until we got to second reception/start of exhibit, did they say I couldn’t have my bag in - it’s €1/100HUF coin to use locker but refunded. The museum itself was incredible quiet in terms of visitor numbers, which I felt was curious. The “temporary exhibit” we got to visit was made up of large black rectangles all wrapped still in bubble wrap at the edges… but the displays were nice. I felt information was fine but no real information on the time period of any of the objects. It is rather beautiful and well kempt inside but not sure I’m convinced it’s worth the time. Good opening hours though. Definitely the gorgeous gardens outside are worth a snap.

If you are interested in architecture and cities, this museum is 10/10 since it has the old version of Budapest in it free to see. There are some other rooms with detailed historical stuff not related to architectural but you need a ticket to enter them.

The place is new for this museum as it was moved to this building two years ago. The design is excellent and you can only admire the architecture of it. The roof garden provides good views and it looks so natural inside the park. Great job from the architecture team. The museum is not a typical ethnographic one, but follows a more modern structure with a lot of special combinations which makes it, in my eyes, a hybrid contemporary-ethnographic museum. I personally prefer a more traditional way to exhibit this kind of artifacts but I can recognise that the implementation is good.

Pros: impressive architecture on the outside. Lots of greenery. Good cafe with healthy options. Relatively english friendly . That’s it. Cons: barely any museum artifacts. Shockingly small number. Plus surly and unhelpful staff. Some pottery and that’s the entire museum. You’ll leave this museum wondering where the museum actually was and if you missed a few floors. You didn’t. The old building actually was a museum. The new museum is an impressive building but rather empty. Please stay on the outside and enjoy the architecture and walk to the other museums nearby.

Go for the building alone which is incredible, but stay and pay for the exhibitions. We went to see the temporary exhibition while the more permanent spaces are under construction and it was well worth a visit. Fascinating selection of artefacts from the museum's collection with labels in Hungarian and English. Cool shop as well, a little on the pricey side

The museum gives a complete picture of agricultural society from the 18th to the early 20th century, before the Treaty of Trianon. Culture, fishing, crafts, markets and fairs, family and holidays are well illustrated with photos, costumes, household items, furniture and more. The Museum of Ethnography founded as the Ethnographic Department of the Hungarian National Museum in 1872. The museum is located in the Kossuth Square, opposite the Parliament building, therefore easy to visit the same day you visit the Parliament House. The grand building in which the Museum of Ethnography is now housed (It will move to another location??) was originally built for the Ministry of Justice. As many buildings in Budapest this is a beautiful building with many details on its facade, worth spending time to discover them.

Building is new and architecture is great. When you buying ticket you have ticket for main exhibition which is on ground floor and you can also buy ticket to another exhibition. Price is growing depending on how many exhibitions you want to see. I prefer to buy all exhibitions, it’s nice and you are not in Budapest every day :). You can also can go to roof which is for free and you have nice view there. Enjoy you visit.

I loved the place and the exhibitions. The guide was nice. Everything was clean and new. The canteen is perfect just for a coffee or for a qiuck meal. There are new lockers you can use to leave your bags in there. At the entrance the toilet is not free, about 20cent but at the lockers if you have your tickets you can use it for free. A nice walk outside to the top of the building with a view of the city park and Buda hills. Don't miss that either. All in all it's worth a visit.

I arrived there 30 minutes before the closing and discovered that they allow the late comers to see a part of exposition for free! It included the city maquette and an enormous collection of ceramics. The pieces were unique and mysterious. The design on the showcase is remarkably good. This is a perfect time spending, especially when you are a student on a budget like me. Additionally, want to notice the magnificent 24/7 accessible green rooftop that allowes for spending time with friends, watching starts, we even had a chance to see the St. István’s drone show rehearsal!

I've visited the museum out of curiosity. The building is designed really creatively, less above the ground, with plenty of green outdoor area created on the roof, and most of the museum space is underground. I did not do any reasearch about it before getting there, so from the name of it I've expected information and exhibitions about the Hungarian people. To my surprise, the museum is as modern on the inside as it is on the outside, there were a lot of multicultural exhibitions, and not as many about Hungarians as I assumed I will find. Overall it was a nice experience and I've enjoyed everything available. Going there in the cold season, the nicely organized wardrobe was a great find.

The exterior is amazing, feel free to walk up to the top - you don't need to pay it's free for the public, just as I am afraid of heights was nerve racking when the steps are metal kinda steep and you can see through them. The museum itself had a couple small exhibitions, wasn't much to see and not worth the full price I paid. I wish they had more things about Hungarian ethnography.

We checked out the world press photo exhibition. The building is beautiful inside and out, and the exhibitions are quality too.

Museum of shoes mostly. Good collection of Hungarian and other cultures, pretty cool. Descriptions of items need more detail, dates would help.

Really beautiful building, which was the palace of justice until around WWII. (The building itself was the runner-up in the competition to design the parliament building at the end of the 19th century.) The ethnographic exhibit is extensive.

Outside beautiful but nowhere online says it’s closed (on official sites).

We had the chance to see it only from the outside, but it was a very impressive building.

On the outside it is really a very nice building but I think it must also be interesting on the inside

One of the most unique buildings I have ever seen in person. I did not enter the museum, but did walk up the outside stairs for free. There is a beautiful public park on the roof that is free to the public. Worth a visit just to see the building.

Beautiful but I did not like the way the stairs were positioned and tilted around the facade. It did not really help the climb up, besides it felt unsafe coming down.

So it was a lot of construction going on in second week of OCT. it’s located adjacent to the parliament. Be careful because the TRAM runs in front of the building. In the construction they actually put facts of the memorial as well.

Really unique building. Love the architecture, makes for a great photo opportunity from all angles. It was formally a disused car park, so it's great to see it transformed like this. The views from the top are awesome and I love the sloping rooftop affect. Open 10-6

A really great building and has a nice cafe inside which is well priced. We spent a morning here and enjoyed wandering around. We climbed up both sides of the building which was a novel thing to do and had great views at each end.

Very huge paraphernalia museum, inside there is almost everything world-weirds you can imagine. Skater shoes included. The real interesting thing Is the structure which is built as a reverse parable and from the top you can have a nice sight of Budapest. Good..free on wednesday.+++

one of my favorite spots in Budapest! The U shape design of the museum is just nice! You can climb to the top of the building edge to enjoy the scene. A bit horrible if you keep looking at your foot step while walking as you can see the bottom

When we arrived at the Ethnographic Museum, we did not know which building it was. From the side, the Museum building looks as if its middle has been flattened and collapsed. Arriving at that place, you remain amazed by the view you see, and only by climbing to the very top on one side do you become aware of the impressiveness of the building and the incredible view of the city.

Truth be told, I've yet to venture inside, but just admiring the architecture of this building ouside. The gradial rooftop garden can be walked up along the sides or just laid on as you a park. All the greenery is well looked after, having only been open since 2022.

The architecture (Napur) is unique, at the center there is memorial of 1956 revolution. The museum itself is full of amazing exhibits. It has a collection from Africa, Asia and Oceania regions. The fee is about 5EU and it is based on what specific exhibit would you like to visit.

HUNGARIAN ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM The Museum of Ethnography's modern new home has been built on the southwestern side of the City Park and was inaugurated in 2022. It stands as an impressive contemporary architectural feat. The central part of the structure submerges into the ground, forming a concave green space where visitors can unwind or ascend the two raised facades for panoramic views. I should mention here that the satellite image on Google Maps for this particular location is outdated and does not show the museum as it is now. Instead, it displays the parking area that was previously there. The Museum of Ethnography boasts the Africa Collection, inclusive of the island of Madagascar, and the Asia Collection. The latter features two prominent subgroups originating from Japan and China, followed by India, Mongolia, and Turkey. The Oceania Collection has garnered international acclaim for its size and composition. Additionally, the museum houses the Indonesia Collection. The Europe Collection's initial focus was on the Finno-Ugric peoples ethnically tied to the Hungarians. However, beginning in the early 20th century, deliberate efforts were made to amass objects from the nationalities within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and its territories. The America Collection stands as the museum's smallest non-European collection. Thematically, the museum encompasses diverse collections such as Crafts and Trades, Transportation, Building Construction, Ceramics, Textiles and Costumes, Furniture and Lighting Instruments, Nutrition, Religious Objects, Customs and Toys, and Musical Instruments. Among its Ethnological Archives, one can find collections of Film and Video, Photographs, Manuscripts, and an Image Archive.

I discovered this museum while walking in the city park. After buying a ticket and walking around all the different exhibitions for a few hours, I was extremely satisfied. The various exhibitions were very interesting and the museum building is unique! This museum is one of the many things found in the city park, but it is certainly one of the most interesting.
