First of all the reason I'm knocking a star off is because the staff are so unfriendly and you aren't supposed to take pictures.. I have no idea why that would be though. Otherwise, it's good value for money, educational, and a really interesting place.

Moving, superbly setup museum on a tough topic. Small museum but extremely well setup for visitors with audio guides in most languages that automatically trigger as you enter a given room. This was a killer feature that made the visit even more easy to traverse. Extremely inexpensive and well maintained. Man’s inhumanity to man is well documented and movingly portrayed. I wish every museum was so well setup. One can spend 3 hours at the museum easily to do it justice.

Very easy to find, nice and quiet place. Tickets cost 3000 per person,if you are EU citizen younger than 26 you get some discounts. They will tell you to not take any pictures, and they try to monitor that very well, not all of them succeed 😊 Anyways good experience, well worth the money.

Me and my brother (USA, 18 and 19) spent 2.5 hours here. We did not get the audio guide. Like other reviews - the staff is at the very least NOT friendly. It cost us $23.49 USD for 2 of us - full price tickets (they do not have student discounts for students with citizenship outside the EU area). Almost everything is written in Hungarian, so consider the audio guide IF 1. you have more time or 2. You really like learning /history. There was enough details for us from the many many videos with English subtitles and the one pager descriptions in about half of the rooms. Overall we learned about a side of history barely taught in American classrooms and so I find this to be a MUST VISIT, even with all the negatives. We came in at 10:10 and had to wait 10 minutes in a line to buy tickets. When we exited around 12:45 there was a pretty long line stretching outside the building (probably 20-30 minute wait).

Its difficult to describe a visit to this museum as enjoyable given its focus. But, if you want to learn about the recent history of Hungary, this is a good place to start. We took the audio guide as we were unsure how much would be in English. Turned out that there are A4 sized cards on the wall in each exhibit/room in English you can take out and read. We still enjoyed having the audio guide. My teenager particularly found this museum fascinating. She listened to every bit of the audio guide and read absolutely every piece of information in here she could find. We spent several hours here having a break for lunch. Even if you haven't much time, a walk round over an hour or so will give you a good taste of what is in this museum & if you are an English speaker, the A4 info cards will be sufficient for you to grasp each exhibit. Some of the old videos displayed recounting this time period are harrowing & a sobering reminder of such recent history.

What a nice museum. The place is so well though out, with many exhibits and interactive areas. The museum is laid out on many floors. Make sure you do not skip any of them, like us😀. We realised we missed some areas so we returned. We got an audio guide and pick up the info paper at the entrance of each new area. We highly recommend it as a group, family or individual. It helps if you speak some Hungarian😉. There are information in English but there are artefacts and other written labels which are not translated. The staff is not very helpful nor friendly, you are not allowed to take photos. One guard in particular was so rigid that he almost helped us get into the back in the communist day’s atmosphere. There is a cafe and some vending machines too. I have no idea where one could park it’s car, we walked from our appartement. Do not miss the notebook as you exit, many people shared their thoughts and impressions there.

A decent place to go if you have an extra day at Budapest. Don't reserve your day specially for visiting this. It is about the history of world war but feels like it's just one side of story (which is totally understandable). The audio guide is recommended, and the entry fee is 10 Euro. It takes around 1.5 hour for the full tour. Taking pictures inside is not allowed.

Great experience in here! A little creepy but really well made, you can learn a lot more about the dark pages of Hungarian history and feel a real contact with those times... Really recommended! Not good for impressionable people though

Historical tour of Hungary’s journey into and through Nazi, Facist, then quasi-Communist occupation and rule. Pay for the audio option, it adds tremendous depth to the visit, and provides details well beyond the displays, at least for an English speaker. If you’re really into the experience it’s a 2-3 hour investment that’ll likely share a view of the countries struggles not well documented elsewhere.

I give only 3 stars because the real goldmine of information, documents, images and exhibits is very, very badly organised. The itinerary of the visit is not clearly explained, and one can deduce it only if he knows the history and the events (I did it, but not the same for several visitors, who were wandering inside the venues with no clue of what to see first). The volume of propaganda music and speeches was so loud to overwhelm the audio guide explanations. The captions - when available...- were often only in Hungarian. The wardens spoke NO English at all. Finally, few places to sit. A real pity.

This might be one of the best and most well thought-through museums I've been too, you could almost call it an art gallery! The different rooms are very well themed and decorated and it does a very good job of explaining the history of Hungary and its terrors. 10/10 Experience

It's very good museum. But they could explain a bit more how it happened that Hungary collaborated with Germans during most of World War II. They could also give more materials in English. But it's still worth to visit, definitely!

I visited the place on the day of free entrance and perhaps it affected the atmosphere of the place but I didn’t find it to be engaging enough to pay the full price (3000 huf) on a normal day. The museum prohibits taking photos which I find quite outdated and in my opinion didn’t have enough of facilities for non-Hungarian people. The two top floors have some navigation and pamphlets in English, however, the basement doesn’t have any instructions in English and was quite chaotic. Overall, if you are not aware of how communism affected the Soviet countries and counties under Soviet regime, and you have time in Budapest and visited all other museums, it’s worth a try. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend to pay the full price.

This is the one of the most interesting and most thrilling exposition I ever saw. Great music, real interviews with red terror victims. Lot of photos, films, rooms stylized, posters. Communists prison, death cell. Truly amazing. I recommend this as a must see when you are in Budapest. Unfortunately you cannot make pictures there.

I went to the house of Terror on a public holiday, March 15, so I stood in line for 1.5 hours. I think there is no such hype on other days. The exposition is interesting. However, there is no much opportunity to read something in English. The staff was polite only at the entrance. The museum caretakers were very rude, but we were in the house of terror🥲🙈 I probably advise you to take an audio guide, so it will be easier to figure everything out. It is forbidden to take photos, so I took only a couple of subject photos to convey the atmosphere.

When visiting Budapest, the House of Terror should definitely be visited and enriches the city trip. In general, this museum shows the time of Budapest/Hungary under National Socialism and the time under Communism. The museum illustrates well how two very different political directions nevertheless intersect in their cruelty. Admission is fine. I would really recommend an audio guide, as there is a lot of information in it and it can be relatively uninteresting without one. I would also recommend visiting at weekends when there are no school groups. There are lockers in the museum for storing valuables. Inside it was very very humid and warm - I would take water with me.

My 10 year old son, and I visited. We did the audio tour which was a bit too detailed and long-winded. We skipped some of the sections, but it was still very informative. The best part is at the end in the basement. We checked our backpacks in the luggage storage, and it worked very well.

HOUSE OF TERROR The museum showcases exhibits related to the fascist and communist regimes of 20th-century Hungary, serving as a memorial to the victims of these oppressive systems, including individuals who were detained, interrogated, tortured, or killed within the specific building. This building was utilized by the Arrow Cross Party and AVH. The exhibition delves into Hungary's interactions with Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during the periods of communism and fascism, and underscores that those who were oppressors during the Nazi era continued to be oppressors under communism, with a simple declaration of remorse. The exhibition takes a firm stance that both ideologies are extreme and thus eventually converge. The museum also includes displays concerning Hungarian entities like the fascist Arrow Cross Party and the communist AVH, akin to the Soviet Union's KGB secret police. A section of the exhibition guides visitors to the basement, where they can witness the cells used by AVH to break the will of their prisoners. Please note that photography and video recording are prohibited within the building. Critics contend that the museum excessively emphasizes Hungary's victimhood under foreign occupiers and falls short in acknowledging the contributions Hungarians made to these regimes. Nonetheless, the museum boasts remarkable aesthetics and museology, with captivating logos for each room and theme. A visit is highly recommended!

The climate in this place is just amazing. So good idea to create this that much scary. The things presented are just facts. There's a lot of videos. Don't take the audio guide as this does not help you to focus on what you see or watch. On the other hand it works just terrible. Sometimes switches automatically (mostly in the rooms with videos) where in quiet rooms without and texts doesn't work and you need to turn on manually. I have found it rather disturbing after just 5 minutes. The organization is half good. That means you start 2nd floor and follow the arrows until 1st floor. Then the access to the basement is something you need to figure out on your own also with direction.

Really great museum. Really informative exhibits and a good layout. My only criticism is there was a large private tour group going through the museum (a school I think) and they totally blocked up most of the exhibits with normal customers having to wait back for them to move on. Staff didn’t seem to do anything about this to allow paying customers a way to get past to continue the tour. Other than that a really important museum to visit to witness some of the sad atrocities committed here.

A good first stop to a trip to Budapest as it helps you understand what Hungary went through and how it relates to some of the other common tourist attractions. The audio guide is a must for English speakers, without it you only have paper pamphlets in certain rooms. I took off a star because of the whole set up. The music was way too intense in one of the first rooms while I was trying to watch the video. The interviews on the wall are also a bit confusing, one would play and then it switches to another screen and then back.

The cells are the really interesting ( and terrifying) bit. I found some of the upper floors lacking in substance. Definitely take an audio guide a lot of the exhibits make no sense without it, but even with one the commentary often seems lacking in substance and too packed with an emotional narrative. Not being an expert it also felt one sided. The staff was also overly intrusive. Having said that the part below ground was great, interesting and informative and definitely makes the whole place worth visiting

(Translated by Google) I liked it, we took the audio guide to understand all that a little. The staff is not very nice but that is common in Budapest. The visit makes you better understand the recent history of the city, world wars, the holocaust and all the events lived by Budapest during the 20th century, few European cities suffered so much being in the middle of the conflict continuously. Inside the building they don't allow photos to be taken, I think I took a couple secretly, the rest are from the outside, which is quite impressive. The museum is very well set up and it is VERY visited, you will have to wait a long line to enter.

An absolute must visit when in Budapest. Definitely pay the extra few dollars for the audio guide and give yourself the 2.5 hours it takes to listen to it all. Very very worth it. The museum is extremely well done, it’s captivating and each room is set up so well. I had no idea about the horrors of the Cold War in Hungary and this opened my eyes right up. Definitely go!

Definitely worth a visit to learn Hungarian history and see the devastation that these people survived, enduring Soviet occupation as recently as 1991. The visit is economical and educational albeit a bit disjointed. You certainly need the audio guide. There are no pictures allowed inside - lost one star for that. Ridiculous! Worse, if you pulled you phone out to say, Wikipedia something they were on you like, well I won’t say, but they came over in a millisecond to tell you to put it away. A powerful visit, not great for kids. Or if you’re claustrophobic, as one part involves a ridiculously slow elevator ride into the basement prison where they show a video describing execution by hanging in vivid detail. That lost the other star!

Intense museum with a lot of important history. Exhibits are fairly well put together but I took a star off because the audio guide is a bit clunky, you can't change the speed of the audio to make it faster but there's not a lot of space to stand around to listen to it in some of the exhibit rooms and it'll change automatically when you switch rooms so there's a lot of standing around. There's also different ways of presenting the info on the audio guide screen itself, the audio, and the leaflets that were in many of the rooms, so it was a bit overwhelming. Could also use more signage for the outside of the exhibit rooms to direct you the right way. No photos allowed inside, audio guides are in a lot of languages.

This museum aims to document the atrocities committed by both the Arrow Cross and Communist regimes in Hungary. However the vast majority of the exhibition focuses on the Communist regime, with very little information on the atrocities commited by the Arrow Cross. Photos are not allowed inside. The subject matter of this museum is certainly controversial, although I still do recommend a visit here in order to understand Hungary's interpretation of its past.

Take the headphones! The lady on reception said I didn't need them but she was wrong! Most of the exhibits have Hungarian descriptions with little English (fair enough, it is in Hungary after all). Disappointment. Not a great place for tourists since most is in hungarian. As a tourist you can read the densely written paper sheets in every room - but then why not just read a book or Wikipedia at home... Most of the other things in English - e.g. subtitles on screens - doesn't do much to add to the experience since you have no idea about the context (is it prisoners, soldiers or something else talking...?) Go see the Holocaust museum instead.

A house that advocates for human respect and freedom, but that discriminates against people with disabilities. Incredible. I have a chronic condition for which I need a medical alert dog. I showed the ID for the registration of my dog as a service animal. I need the dog, because she alerts me when my blood values drop so that I take medicine timely and do not have an emergency, which could be deadly. The ID was not accepted, my explanation that this is an assistance dog was not accepted. I was refused entry.. Many other institutions and museums in Budapest and the world accept people with service/assistance dogs. The House of Terror does not. Irony of history. Shame on your institution and manager. You are engaging in discrimination.

Museum with details on the horrors faced by the Hungarian people. Must visit once when in Hungary to know the atrocities suffered by the people here. You are sure to be moved emotionally by the end of the tour. You can buy the audio guide at the counter and the tour with all the explanation lasts for 2 hours if you listen to every detail. Skipping through the rooms is also possible. There is an elevator inside.

Not for everyone, you must be able to stomach it. At the start, I was even near crying. The are some terrifing scenes of just thousand of dead bodies being dragged, looking more like skeletons with skin, than not too long ago alive people. But if you can stomach it, I recommed not paying for the audio guide. I was not worth it, there was a lot of loud music, I barely heard it, and even if I heard it there were much more interesting stuff around you, so you woudnt pay attenttion anyway. The documents have english subbtitles, plus if you really want to know more, you can read a text that is in every room. And the head phones were really uncomfortable and hurt my ears.

Pros: - For a museum about terror, it felt eerie and claustrophobic. The visuals, music and sound all supported the atmosphere. Cons: - They use a revisionist history where Hungarians were portrayed as victims of Nazis whereas in reality, they were allies and enthusiastic collaborators (Hungary chose to join the Axis). This museum fits well with Orban and Fidesz’s narrative. - Almost everything is in Hungarian so you need to get the audio guide. Is the propaganda intended for a domestic audience? - The gift shop contains more propaganda literature about how wokism or Soros is corrupting the world.

Waste of money and time. A lot of emotive lighting, music and storytelling but not many facts or actual history. Not allowed to take pictures, constantly stalked by Staff who were unhelpful and almost hostile. Best bit was the toilets that smelled nice. Obviously a lot of money gone into the museum to push a narrative. Do your research on the "the leader of a movement to rewrite the Holocaust" who is the director of the museum.

(Translated by Google) The museum itself deserves 5 stars. After all, he presents the horrors in a timeless and lifelike way. He realized everyone's horrible past. The exhibition is well built, I like the designated route, so you can watch everything. What I didn't like, for example, the audio presentations accompanied by the video often disturbed each other. It was just hard to focus on that particular video. In many places, the tablets are barely legible due to the lighting conditions. (Original) A múzeum maga 5 csillagot érdemel. Hiszen korhűén és életszerűen mutatja be a szörnyűségeket. Mindenkit rádöbbent a borzalmas múltra. Sok helyen a táblacskak a fényviszonyok miatt alig olvasható.

Super nice experience. It was nice and memorable experience to visit this historic museum. All three levels are great with information in both English and Hungarian in the form of printed matter in each room and on every level related to the things/photographs/videos 📹 on display. I wish I could see the tank from inside 😕. May be they will consider this option for an additional fees. The entry tickets 🎟 was 3000huf and if one wants an additional audio guide then it costs 1500 huf extra. Overall a super informative experience. Recommended!

A pretty interesting place to visit when in Budapest. It teaches you about an important history that many people may not learn about during their education. The place is somewhat eerie as it makes you think more deeply about Hungary and it’s past. Just a note that you can’t bring big bags or backpacks in (they have lockers or storage to keep them while you are in the museum area). The exterior of the building is also quite interesting when the sun casts the shadow at the right angle!

I arrived at opening time and it wasn’t very busy, plus today is a holiday. I found the second and third floor a bit confusing to navigate and an audio supplement is definitely needed. The basement with chambers is fascinating and eerie. Definitely puts some things into perspective and makes one a bit emotional as well. Definitely worth checking this place out!

This is an impressive museum that not only tells a story, but it shows you gradually what history used to be in certain times. The museum is a delight, there are interactive objects in different rooms and each new rooms tells an amazing story. I would recommend this museum and would love to revisit it at some point. It's probably amazing if you understand Hungarian, but hardly any of the signs said anything in English.. The films were all subtitled, but as one had to see a film from a random point, it was hard to make out whether it was during ww2, in the late 40s or 50s.. Only one room dedicated to the 1956 revolt it seems

(Translated by Google) After watching it, I was amazed at how world class the exhibition is. I was expecting a lot more Hungarian. It conveys the feeling / atmosphere that such a museum should be able to convey. I really liked it. And the price (3000ft) is acceptable. The 4 stars are just because Viktor's name is engraved on the wall in the lobby.

(Translated by Google) Poor performance, interactivity is minimal. I would recommend the organizers a visit to a foreign museum to gain experience. You can't bring a bag (for example, yes to the Louvre, although there's only a lot of it ... Oh no). The security force is very disturbing, I feel almost uncomfortable to study the exhibited object next to the sculpted guard-protector so as not to disturb it. You can skip it, you won’t get the plus you would expect.

Good experience, exhibitions are interesting. It took me 1.5h with audio guide. However price is quite high, so I wouldn't recommend it for for someone who isn't interested in history. For foreigners there are English overview sheets you can take in each room, hovewer I recommend to take audio guide, it is more comfortable.

Makes you feel like you're travelling back in time, a very touching experience, the basement and the cells are definitely a painful reminder of the past. Overall I wish sometimes there were more things in English, although there is still plenty of things translated from Hungarian. Great place, definitely a must especially from anyone coming from outside the old Soviet block as it's a part of history we all should know about.

Very impressive rooms. However, had to wait for half an hour before we could enter. Audio guides were all taken already so the only information we had were printed pages at every room. The decoration and items and most movies are only in Hungarian which is kinda disappointing. They look really interesting and you get the general idea of each room but it would be nice to understand everything. But still 4 stars as the exhibition is really nicely set up.

Great museum depicting the near history of Hungary and giving a good insight into the collective trauma of the nation. As someone from Eastern Europe, it wasn’t all that “new” to me, but I still enjoyed how creative the storytelling and the exhibition was. Definitely get the audio guide! Although there are printed papers with longer text and explanations in almost each room as well, then the audio guide is just so much easier - also has translations of Hungarian text on walls. Overall we needed about 1.5hours to see it all.

A must see. One of the best museums where people talk about real events. These are the people who suffered and died for our freedom in the worst century of Hungary's history.

The House of Terror was a real eye opener. It walks you through the Russian atrocities carried out in the very building the museum is housed in. We rented the headphones and spent hours here (it's self-guided so you can spend as much or as little time as wanted). The tour gave us a much better understanding of what the Hungarian people have been through. Well worth the time and money ($30 / 2 people with headphones). No photos are allowed on the tour.

This is a kind of museum in my city that I’m looking for when abroad. If you’re interested in the history of the 20th century, this place is for you. However please note that there are a lot of Hungarian text in the exhibitions with limited explanation in English, so the audio guide could be very useful.

Sadly needed to remember how bad people can be and to - hopefully- not going back to those actions nor mindsets. Very well placed and set up, gave me goosebumps all along. There is a very nice touch in transitioning from one floor to another that I will let you discover without spoilers 😉 I recommend the audio guide. There are descriptions and explanations in each room in hungarian and english but the english one is in a piece of paper meaning a long read which to me, made it difficult to absorb the info.

An incredible museum. Get the audio guide. I feel the experience is a necessary one when visiting Hungary. This museum for goes dramatic imagery of atrocities and relies on first hand accounts and historical facts to convey what true terror is and how subversive it is. It changed my world view a bit and gave me deeper respect and understanding what the Hungarian people have endured

Expect to see a very well put together show of installation art! It’s both informative and aesthetically stunning. Well illustrated Budapest’s unique history of 50days German occupation > Arrow Cross terror > Soviet Occupation. The basement has recreated interrogation rooms and prisons… ok, not until then I knew why this building is called “House of Terror”. The experience can be improved if a brief story of the building could be given before diving into 1944. Nevertheless, it’s still a good museum that cannot be missed. Such a pity that photography is prohibited throughout. These installation arts should be shared!

The Museum was good, I felt the audio guide is very necessary despite there are some papers with explanations but the info they have are very limited, so in my experience would be more enjoyable and easy to understand if you have an audio guide. The price is 2,000 florins

This museum is absolutely critical to educate both Hungarians and tourists on the horrors of communism and totalitarianism in the country. The stories, images and artifacts remind us all the value of democracy and how fragile it is, and the high cost we all pay when we lose it. My rating was mostly due to the lack of opportunity to present a more forceful and impactful message, most messages were in the form of videos with Hungarian audio, poor or no English signage made the message dissipate. I hope it is remodeled to create a better impact and easier for the international audience to absorb.

  • 5/5 John M. 5 months ago on Google
This was a sobering exposé of atrocities in the post WW2 and Soviet occupation era. It was a thorough and well documented timeline showing the impact to the daily lives of ordinary citizens caught in the crosshairs of war. The only criticisms are that the museum would itself become another terror in the event of a fire, given the overcrowding of visitors, close quarters and unlabeled fire exits. The English audio guide also portrayed the Hungarian politicians as being forced unwillingly into choosing sides in WW2 due to being squeezed between Germany and Russia, with no mention of their aspirations to retake land lost after WW1.

Take your time and enjoy the massive information about the communism actions in these countries. 1-Take an audio guide 2- rad the papers in the blogs for maximum b3nefit. Really enjoyed the experience with all the ups and downs that took place in that time. Do not forget to write your thoughts at the end of the visit in the big book!

I think all visitors to Budapest should take the time to tour the House of Terror. It’s not a feel-good, lighthearted kind of attraction, but I believe it is critical to learn and acknowledge even the darkest parts of history. In a city as beautiful as Budapest, it’s easy to overlook the sufferings and injustices of the Hungarian people, but the House of Terror provides important perspective, in my opinion.
