Way overpriced! 7000 or 18 euros for not much. I've been living in BP for years and I've been there for the first time last week end to please some visiting friends, well that wasn't a miss.. Honestly, have a look at the garden (the nicest part of it all) from outside and the synagogue itself (which is much more beautiful to look at than to visit) and save money for a restaurant.

No visit to Budapest could be complete without visiting this magnificent Synagogue, it's truly beautiful inside. Completed in 1859 it remains the largest in Europe with a seating capacity of 3000. Start with the 30 minute talk by a guide explaining the History of the Synagogue and also of the experiences of Jews in Hungary. The jewel in the Crown is obviously the main Synagogue, but don't miss the smaller Synagogue (used in Winter months for energy conservation), The Museum (objects relating to religious and everyday life) and another exhibition of the Budapest Ghetto 1944/45. At the North End, before the exit gate, stop to see the Holocaust Tree of Life Memorial. Easy to spend a couple of hours here and totally worth the entry fee.

This synagogue is unique in size, design, and history. It is the largest synagogue in Europe, it is designed like a church (with an organ), it is lavish, and it reflects the history of the affluent Jewish community of Budapest. Be sure to book a guide, and one who knows Jewish culture and history. There is a lot to learn about this place and it's importance in Hungary. The cemetery and monuments on the side and rear offer interesting insights into Jewish life in Budapest over the centuries.

A very ornate Jewish church. After buying the ticket, there is an English guide tour to explain the history of the Jews and their habits in daily life. It was very interesting. In addition, there are cemeteries, exhibitions, and museums to visit.

For those who visit for religious reasons, yes, I wouldn't think twice, it's a religious place, one of a kind, which bares a long history, it's the second largest synagogue in the world and 1st in europe. You will also have access to it's beautiful museum full of tradition and explanatory text next to each object, which brings you closer to Judaism, the tradition and religion...which is the only reason you should visit, that is if you are not there to pray. So why am I giving it a 4 star? Reason is that I can't justify the almost 20 euro ticket for a quick look inside the synagogue, since you need to pay extra for the guide which you are gonna need, to tell you a bit more about it's history or how everything came to be. Spend your money elsewhere if you re only sightseeing, or take a look at the photos online.

I don't know what I can say that others haven't said. This synagogue is magnificent and you must go there when you're in Budapest. Even if you're not Jewish, this synagogue is breathtaking and moving and will have you under its spell. It is serene inside and you can't help but marvel at the gorgeous details in every single feature of the interior. There's the main synagogue and a smaller one that is used in winter, and out the back is a cute little garden area with a Holocaust Tree of Life Memorial monument that is stunning too (if that's the right word to use). You can wander around on your own, or take tours that are led in various languages. To be honest, we did our own thing, but I now wish I'd taken a guided tour. I hope to go again, so if I do, this is what I'd choose. Yes, it's a little overpriced, but it's "mandatory" to visit here when visiting this great city. I'm willing to bet this old, magnificent shule (the biggest in Europe) is probably the most beautiful in the world and you can easily spend a good solid hour or two looking around and taking in the grandeur of it all. I highly recommend it.

Although entrance fee is expensive there is a free great and extremely informative guided tour that gives you an insight into Jewish customs as well as Hungarian Jewish history. Memorial and tree of life can be seen from the outside of you are on a budget but I think it’s well worth paying to see this. Can easily spend 3 hours here.

Beautiful synagogue from the inside and out. They have guides in different languages. The ticket will allow you to visit the synagogue, exhibition of photos and also a museum that they have inside. All of these places are worth visiting. I highly recommend.

This synagogue was amazing. I've never been to a Jewish synagogue before. It was an educational experience. There is a very deep andrich history behind this synagogue. The tour guide really knew his stuff. I was told that the tour is free but it is not. I paid 18,000 ft for 2 tickets which I think converted to £42 in total. Great experience though, so I think it was worth it.

This experience is insanely overpriced for what is offered. The synagogue is nice but is a short visit. The ghetto museum is nothing more than a collection of signs hung in non-chronological order. The gardens are also small and not impressive, and the free guided tour was extremely short because it is clear there is not much to show. Overall an expensive experience for very little payoff

Dohány Street Synagogue has done a nice job of memorializing the Jewish victims of the Holocaust in Budapest. The brief description of the Synagogue given by the tour guide was informative and helpful. It was very short, however the wait for it to start was long as we had just missed the previous English tour. The art work in the Synagogue itself is beautiful. The Memorial areas outside are well done.

Never been to a synagogue before, so this was quite an experience. This is the largest synagogue in Europe, and it's impressive. You can also see the cemetery, the memorial, and the museum. It is rather a sad experience as it shows how much pain people had to go through, but it's a must visit. The entrance is about £20.

The synagogue is nice, and they have guided tours in various languages. Staff are very strict with the dressing code. Worst case, some sort of covers are available for 1 euro. The synagogue is nice to visit, and the history explained by the guide is definitely interesting. Nevertheless I found it quite expensive (25 euros/person), considering the size and visit time.

Beautiful Synagogue , the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world. There’s a 15 euro entrance fee. The synagogue provides kippas for men; women must cover arms and below the knees. Gowns can be purchased for women for one euro. Definitely worth a visit. So stunning.

Very moving experience, I definitely recommend to attend a guided tour, as the whole history of this place is something to be remembered and known. Tour is included in the ticket, but it starts at a specific time, so sometimes you have to wait a little. The ticket also includes entrance to some other exhibitions within the area.

Stopped by on a whim after seeing this gorgeous building and deciding we wanted to see the inside too. Tickets were around £16 each, which includes a free guided tour that sets off every half an hour and entrance to the synagogue, gardens, museum, and an exhibition. The interior of the synagogue is unusual and beautiful and our tour guide was very personable and knowledgeable. The museum was informative and well designed, and the exhibition was gut-wrenching. Definitely worth a 1-2hr visit to see the beautiful interior and to gain an understanding of the history of Budapest's Jewish community.

Worth the visit. Super beautiful Synagogue, very different to standard. The included guide doesn't take long, but very informative and quite entertaining, Steve was our guide and he gave a delightfully warm intro into his religion and the history of the location. Highly recommended a visit to this synagogue. Second biggest in the world. The admission fee is quite pricey compared with the basilica but the synagogue is much better value. You can buy your tickets at the entrance but be mindful of the dress code. We had an excellent knowledgeable guide take us round the synagogue, the remembrance garden and the tree outside. There is also a museum explaining the Budapest holocaust.

We visited here on a Saturday but the synagogue was closed until Monday. We did get to see the great outside and some of the memorial gardens through the fence. It is quite a place and we would like to tour the inside, when again in Budapest. It is very rich in Jewish history and culture. A good place to have on your tour list.

Beautiful synagogue with a unique style that has many influences. The guided tour is very interesting and available in numerous languages. Included in the entry ticket is access to a second adjacent synagogue, an exhibition on the history of the Hebrew community of Budapest and a museum. A cap is provided at the entrance to men, but if you are bald or have a buzz cut remember to bring something to cover your head with because the paper cap will be useless.

Incredible place you don't want to miss. Impressive huge synagogue. One of the biggest in the world. Something you've never seen when going in to a synagogue. different vibe going in. Mixture of cultures, with a somehow church lookalike. But with all the Jewish significance. Going in through the main entrance is a great feeling and seeing all it's beauty even more. Worth taking a look. Includes the museum which is great and informative. One should take the tour!

This is a paid admission place of worship - you cannot enter unless you pay the hefty entry fee. They have guides for each language - which explain that the American Estée Lauder funded restoration. Very interesting holocaust museum downstairs in basement - regarding treatment of Budapest Jews during WW II. Overall - guides were knowledgeable and tour was good! Worth seeing!

(Translated by Google) This is the largest synagogue in Europe. The exterior of the building combines romantic and Byzantine-Moorish styles, as well as unusual oriental motives, indicating the Middle Eastern origins of the Jews. The eastern wall of the Synagogue differs from the general orientation of the walls of buildings on the street, because according to ancient laws, the facade of the synagogue should face east, towards Jerusalem. At the main eastern wall, there is an ark that contains the ancient Torah scrolls. At the top of the casket with the ark, you can see the pompous dome by Frigyes Fesl, as well as the two huge candelabra standing in front of it, 12 branches on each. 1492 seats for men and 1472 for women were bought by the builders even before the synagogue was fully commissioned. And in the future, only the owners could use them. They could be sold, bought, or even pledged; every place in the synagogue was so valuable. There is a saying in the local Jewish community: “A member of the community must have an apartment, a summer residence and a place in the Synagogue on ul. Dohan " At the beginning of the war, all the stained glass windows were removed and hidden in the basements of the National Museum, only because of this they survived it. The cemetery located next to the synagogue is of particular importance, because according to Jewish traditions, burials are not placed next to temples. In the ghetto, as a result of epidemics, hunger, cold and executions, a huge number of people died, who could not be transported to the cemetery. As a result, thousands of bodies lay under the walls of the synagogue for 40 days. Of these, 3,500 victims were buried in nearby cemeteries. When the territory was liberated, more than 3000 bodies were found in the square adjacent to the church, 2881 bodies were found in the courtyard of the synagogue, for the burial of which 24 mass graves were needed. In the park, next to the synagogue, you can see the Tree of Life (designed by Imre Varga) located on a pedestal made of red granite - a weeping willow tree, on 30 thousand leaves of which the names of the victims are engraved.

Good historical site for both Jewish and non Jewish visitors. Remember security is tight for a reason. Film in the garden and memorial. Pay your quiet respect to Raoul Wallenberg, a man who sacrificed his life to save so many. A memorial to Sir Nicholas Winton is also there. The creator of the Kindertransport, a man who saved hundreds of children from certain death. Lessons in bravery like this never go out of style. The price of a ticket is about 5000 HUF, local currency. Please note: this is a site of a mass murder burial ground. There are images though historically accurate may cause distress.

To be honest for this amount of money .. you don’t see or heard many things. Maybe it was our local guide who was not so good that made things boring. I’ve been to Auschwitz, to Buchenwald, to many Naci camps and many Ghettos and synagogues as well. I have to be honest, nothing special. Still, praying for the victims 🖤

The second largest Synagogue in Europe, but in my opinion the most beautiful and majestic. I am Jewish so for me it was so special entering, touring and singing inside...

We didn't enter in, maybe next time. The line outside is long. The place looks amazing for the outside. The biggest sinaguge in Europe

The amazing architecture, one of the most beautiful synagogues in Europe, a real monument of architecture and my people! In such places I’m proud of my people, the people of Abraham and Moses! Also this place includes a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, the eternal memory of 6,000,000 victims of Nazism!

Indeed one of most beautiful example of human craftsmanship. Definitely a must see. But i do wonder about the rather exorbitant ticket price i have paid anywhere. Anyway, I still don’t regret visiting. But I won’t be coming back unless the price drops to a half of what it is now (20 euros).

A beautiful synagogue and really worth your time. It's a bit expensive but there are free tours which are very informative and there's a museum. They even have a viewable Tora for all genders. Well worth it.

The inside was like any other church one can find in Europe with the garments and vitro. The ticket really expensive for what you can see. The most interesting part is the garden with the cemetery and the tree dedicated to thousands of Jewish people who died.

We spent about an hour and a half here and it was incredible enlightening, as well as a beautiful opportunity to see such a unique space. The tour is a great opportunity that I would recommend taking advantage of while there - it was about 30 minutes long but they walked us through the whole complex and briefly talked about everything to just give us enough information to fully understand what the Synagogue means to the community. Learned a lot and was able to go into the museum and other parts of the space with good background information.

A beautiful, well kept piece of history. I was very impressed with the amount of history that is available in so many languages so you can truly understand the Jewish history in Hungary.

Quite expensive entrance but a very cool synagogue. The memorial park and guided tour was also nice, and the museum is probably worthwile if you’re very interested in jewish culture and history.

It’s expensive, but their guides are very well trained. They place is beautiful and full of history. They have different language’s guides and I think that it’s important to learn about this part of history.

Beautiful Synagogue well worth a visit. Before you enter, you have to go through the airport type security . There is also a strict dress code you need to abide by. If you are not dressed in accordance with the dress code, you can buy a blue gown to wear . Men also need to wear some type of head covering while in the Synagogue itself. Once in, you can really appreciate the beauty of the building and other areas of the grounds.

Yes, it’s a steep cost to enter but we’re glad we did. Seeing the second biggest synagogue in the world was special. The half hour English tour was great. The memorial highlights were touching. I’d recommend going inside if it fits within your budget. We tried to buy tickets online in advance but their site wasn’t working. We waited in like about five minutes around 11:20am on a weekday to buy tickets in person.

This place is impressive. There is also a free guided tour done by some volunteers which sheds light on the synagogue and its history. There are several exhibitions about the history of Jewish in Budapest which are really moving. It's really worth the visit and the cost.

A must see place for your Budapest visit! When we were there they had regular free tours in several languages. A guided explanation is so much more enriching. The history within is so important now as much as ever.

Very much worth the visit. The entry ticket is a bit expensive, but...A. Remember that you are helping to maintain an incredible heritage location. B. It includes a tour. The building and insides are stunning. The included tour is not extensive -- which is *not* meant to be a critique at all. For people who don't like tours (my husband), it isn't overwhelming. For those who like tours (me), it gives enough background information and leaves you to explore on your own to see more. It's a beautiful location that will teach you about the Jewish ghetto that existed in Budapest during the war.

It was great going here, and also my first time ever in a synagogue. It wasn't too crowded, and the expo as well as the museum were interesting. The inside was really beautiful. We did find the tickets a little pricey (about 23euros per person) for what you get to see, but thats it!

The Great Synagogue is a gorgeous monument with beautifully preserved interiors. The attached Jewish Museum is small, but full of interesting exhibits. Afterwards, walk into the grounds, visit the mass grave memorial and the museum that chronicles the history of Budapest’s Jewish community, including the horrors of the Holocaust. It’s dark, disturbing but needs to be remembered. Everything is very well labelled in English.
