Museum of Music History

Tourist attraction History museum

😠 a hidden and little publicized museum, but that is the least ... The worst thing is that a rude and unpleasant old man told us that we could not enter, that it was closed, at two in the afternoon, when the closing time is 4 pm. When asking for explanations he limited himself to shouting "tomorrow"... People often mention museum, instruments, music, collection,

I visited to see the Music History museum which as at August 2017 also includes an installation about Bela Bartok. It was well laid out with wall hangings in Hungarian and English, and information cards in other languages as well. The room dedicated to the piano workshop is small but hugely fascinating (though as a pianist I am biased), and it was wonderful to see a range of ages of pianoforte in one room, as opposed to seeing one at a time in a National Trust property in the UK.

It was a very lovely journey that makes the museum worth the visit. And I only entered for 500ft. Inside, there are all kinds of documents and musical instruments and related art inspired by music. There are halls and special rooms decorated for specific Hungarian musicians. You get to read short bios and what makes each one special. You also get to see the workshops of musical instruments and how they were made. But the most memorable, exciting, and special thing about this museum is the big piano with the sign "play me". It allows visitors to play music themselves. One of the visitors was a professional and I was able to enjoy listening to classical music while he was playing on the piano. In short, it's highly recommended for those who appreciate and taste fine music.

Located in the heart of the castle district this little museum of music is great for music lovers.

I thought this was going to exclusively a collection of old classical orchestral musical instruments. Whilst indeed this does constitute a substantial and presumably permanent part of the Museum; there are currently additional (temporary) exhibitions here beginning with a tribute to Gyorgy Ligeti, celebrating the Centenary of his birth. Another exhibition relates to Laszlo Lajtha, a memorial room is dedicated to him containing his personal furniture e.g. Writing Table, Bosendorfer Piano etc. With no specific interest in these musicians I enjoyed the wonderful collection of old classical orchestral instruments the most, particularly the wide range of pianos. Note, cash only entrance fee, 2000 huf and no pensioner discount.

Couldn't wait to see this place, I'm very interested in Hungarian music. Unfortunately they are closed until the 20th of August 2018. If they had mentioned this on their website I wouldn't be as disappointed as I am now.. :-(

I'm not saying it's interesting because I haven't visited it. However, the façade and patio are interesting. My negative review is not about this museum, which a priori may only interest a few, but which I would visit if it were free; My criticism is that you have to pay anything that can be charged in Budapest! In other European capitals there are some days free or at least you can freely enter all the Churches. The only exception is the Koller Gallery which is right next to this museum.

A lovely little museum away from the crowds in the castle district. 1000HUF for an adult with a gorgeous collection of old instruments, a small exhibition room, and some samples of the different instruments being played. Very friendly staff. It will take about 10-40 minutes depending on how much time you spend with each exhibit. It looked like a new exhibition space was being decorated as we visited so it may be expanding soon!

An impressive collection of old, exquisitely-crafted classical musical instruments, well mentained and looked after. A fair share of details about the items in the museum, many belonging to consecrated Hungarian composers or musicians. Interesting to see some older or quirky pianos, as well as some original manuscripts of composers such as Liszt

A bit of a disappointment. Part of the information is not a wily in English and you pass in rooms, plenty of instruments but NO sound. No music. I suppose some more ideas could be found to create a little more interaction.
