Although an incredible history and atmosphere, looks to me this cafe has turned into a tourist trap. We waited I queue outside for about 15-20 minutes before getting a seat. Once inside , I realized there are many available tables but many people forced to wait outside. Service was not overly friendly and was very slow. The waiter was impatient with me while I placed my order. He tapped is fingers on the chair while I was ordering to show his frustration with me. Quality of food and drinks is good, but is overpriced compared to many other beautiful cafes available in Buenos Aires. The best part of Cafe Tortoni is the atmosphere. Such an incredible feeling to sit here where many other famous people came. I’m really glad that I waited in queue and had the experience, however, it is not a place I would ever return for then or service and over priced food as mentioned above.

Stepping into Cafe Tortoni is like stepping back into time. The moment you alight on the pavement outside and see the smiling face of the statue welcoming you in, to the entrance into the cafe and the walls studded by slice of history going deep deep into the cafe, you feel as if time has stopped and you have stepped into another very gracious lifetime. Buenos Aires, like Paris, is famous for its cafes and none are more interesting to visit that Cafe Tortoni. The fare also lives up to the traditions set by the owners more than a century ago. Their cakes and pastries are a must try as are their steaks. Gracious stewards look after your needs and time stands still. There is no hurry, no bustle nothing but time on your hands to savour the atmosphere and the food. Stay as long as you wish, imbibe this slice of history for this slice of history will stay with you forever.

This is a tourist trap if I've ever eaten at one. You won't get good food here. Only the chocolate used with the churros and the cider are solid. It's a frustratingly bland menu given the huge popularity. The churros are famous but we were given a clearly stale or bad batch. I shouldn't have to fight a churro. It should be soft inside, slightly crisp outside, and not a combative stick. Any American dad could make you a better burger on their backyard grill. The potatoes were, well, potatoes. I heard a tour guide outside say this is where you find locals. Everyone inside was speaking English, Mandarin, and broken Spanish. Americans, let me translate: this is the Mi Tierra for Texans, the Katz Deli for New Yorkers, the original Starbucks location for Washingtonites, the Boudin Bakery for Californians, and all minus good food. Service is slightly slow but that's understandable given the popularity. Restrooms are very poorly marked. Facing the bar, the women's restroom is on its right side and the men's is on the left. Expect to wait in line outside at least 30 minutes for a table on a weekday, likely more on a weekend. Too many people visit here for a photos and to say "we've been here" when they should get cheaper, better food faster at many other establishments around town. This is a skip for food. It's a pretty building that's probably fine to see a tango show inside of, but the food is disappointing.

I came here two days in a row for breakfast. Overall I enjoyed my experience. The atmosphere is great and the service is decent. The tango history and memorabilia covering the walls is worth the visit. I had to wait a bit longer on my second visit for food and my check despite being the first one in the door and the place not being particularly busy. If you want one of the best cappuccinos in Buenos Aires look no further. The toast here is also very good, finding good bread in Buenos Aires is somewhat elusive (or perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right places). The cheesecake was delicious. If you’re planning to come later in the day be prepared to wait in line for 45 minutes to an hour.

As a breakfast person, especially if you accompany it with a perfect cup of coffee, I think is the best way to begin the day. This place got stuck in time, every inch is full of history and art. At this time is almost winter, it is a chill morning, and you can spot a waiting line at the door, most of these people are tourists who are just dropped off by the hop-on-hop-off bus. You can choose from preset breakfasts or lunch, or maybe you can create your combo with different pastries, coffees, sandwiches, etc. The pastries have an incredible flavor, you can feel the crunchiness and traditional flavor, in every bite. We got a couple of sandwiches (jam, cheese, and tomato), and of course, you can not miss a freshly squeezed orange juice. If you are in Buenos Aires you can not miss this place.

It's fine but don't bother lining up. Not worth it. Ordinary food which will make your eyes water at the price. The "sandwich" is just a couple of slices of ham with melted cheese on a slice of bread. The steak sandwich was a small roll with an equal size piece of steak. You might need a second lunch after dining here. The service is good though and the waiters friendly, so there's that at least. In a city of delicious eats, there are far better options than this tourist trap.

After waiting in the long line, we got in and we ended up very disappointed! The service was poor, with long waiting. Just one waiter speaks English! They deliver a wrong food at the end! The quality of food (we ordered hamburger) was very poor! Didn’t worse the long waiting at all!

The line outside was long but many empty tables inside. Staff were extremely slow. Only visit if you have time to spare. Interior was nice. Food was alright, nothing amazing. Good tourist spot I guess.

I have to say that I was not so impressed. I appreciate the history and stories behind this coffee shop, but the long entrance queue does not make sense, as we waited for 1.5 h but when we went inside there were a lot of free tables. I am guessing they wanted to create an illusion of being very busy. The coffee was nice but the sweets were too sweet. As well, service was okay but it was rather slow, therefore the huge queue outside.

(Translated by Google) A must see if you visit the City of Buenos Aires. It is one of the few notable bars that can still be enjoyed today. The breakfast or snack options are excellent and the prices are lower than many "hip" bars. I definitely recommend it, both for the service and for the history that is breathed inside.

We stopped here on our way to the airport. Thankfully, we were in a group, so we didn't have to wait on line to get in. What a lovely place, great atmosphere, great service, delicious croissants fresh and flaky, or medialuna as the locals call it. Personally I didn't care for the churros. Coffee was delicious too.

Had to wait about 15 minutes on a weekday around 5pm. When you get in, you see what the hype is all about. The place has so much history to it, from all the pictures on the wall to the old chip glass floors, it truly takes you back in time. Our order came quickly and was just like another cafe, there was nothing special about the presentation or the order itself that made it stand out other than the fact you're having it at Cafe Tortoni. If you're in BA, you want some IG worthy pictures, must visit.

Café Tortoni has a great atmosphere, history and service. However it falls short on what should be one of the main points: the food. It's not bad. It's just too plain ordinary for a place with that fame. It had the worst, but still ok, medialuna we ate in all Buenos Aires. The line is worth the ambient, but don't bother missing your desayuno for it.

Our night out was nothing short of amazing! The basement of this cafe transformed into a tango wonderland, hosting a breathtaking performance. The dance moves were like poetry, synchronized to the beat of traditional tango songs that filled the air. The vibe was electric, and the crowd's reactions were pure magic, adding to the sensational atmosphere. It was more than just a show; it was an immersive experience that left us utterly captivated.

Interesting historical place. Most people there are tourists. We got there just after 8 am and did not have to wait. By the time we got out by 9 am, the line was quite long. The price is high by local standards. The waiters all spoke English. Worth a visit and you don’t have to order a lot.

It's one of the top 5 historical coffees that we have in Buenos Aires. I recommend four tourist, to drink some coffe and enjoy the old fashioned environment that you will find over there. The dayly menu is not good, but the coffee yes. I think is a great spot for tourist.

The food and drinks are a bit pricier here but it’s well worth it for the beautiful interior and classic design. The tango shows held here are great too, but you have to buy the tickets in cash in person.

(Translated by Google) Depending on the time, it may take a while to get in. We arrived around 7pm and waited in line outside. After 8pm it was pretty empty. At 8pm, the tango show starts every day at the café. We ordered a cold cuts board and Aperol Spritz. As the churros had run out we went from apple pie for dessert. Everything impeccable. Very pleasant atmosphere, excellent service. It is worth visiting at least once during your stay in Buenos Aires.

You mainly go here to enjoy the great interior and the atmosphere of this Parisean style grand café which was established at this place at 1858. Expect to queue a longer time before you get seated since the place is very popular amongst tourists. We queued around 35 minutes around lunchtime on weekday. The food was of good quality but not outstanding and the staff gave a slightly tired impression.

Came here in the evening around 830 p hoping to see tango show downstairs in bodega. Unfortunately it was almost over. Stayed for dinner and food was not good. Maybe breakfast is better?? Ambience is cool tho. Old school French cafe from 1858.

Although it is on every guide to Buenos Aires for being the oldest one, Cafe Tortoni is truly a place where you should try to stop for breakfast or a quick bite. There will most likely be a line in front of it, but it's worth the short wait. The place is beautiful, full of history, famous "friends" that used to go there and signed artwork on the walls. What surprised me the most is that despite the line, inside the place is not packed and they don't rush the service. It's calm, charming and a really great cafe to be. And we had one of the best medialunas (small croissants) there, as they toasted it a bit, and so the melted cheese inside made it extra special. The prices can be slightly higher than average, but actually not that much, as we could expect in such a place.

A must visit in Buenos Aires, mainly because of the rich history of the place. Worth the wait (I had to what app 1 hour). Food is "old-school", so is the service.

After a couple of recommendations from friends and online articles, we decided to visit the popular Cafe Tortoni. There was a queue outside the place on a Monday evening. We got a table after a wait time of fifteen minutes. To our surprise there were multiple empty tables inside. We are not sure why a restaurant/cafe would want its diners to be uncomfortable and wait when they have vacant tables. We ordered: - Cheese and avocado sandwich: this was decent. - Hot chocolate with churros: the hot chocolate was way too sweet and did not have the rich chocolate flavour or texture. The churros were a little too hard on the outside. - Vegan burger: the burger and the patty were too dry. I somehow managed to finish it with mustard sauce on the side. - vanilla cold coffee: it did not have the vanilla notes. The coffee was very average. The place had a vintage colonial vibe. This was the only thing that was comforting about the place. I will not recommend this place if you are looking for vegetarian food and good coffee.

One of the nicest places in Buenos Aires. The food lives up to the expectation. For odd reasons, the restaurant likes to keep a line of people waiting outside even there are tons of tables available. Maybe to keep it manageable? We were lucky not have to wait.

Not only will you get excellent customer service and great coffee, desserts and treats but also you will have a unique experience there. it's a place so rich in history that basically everyone should go at least once in their lives. 5 Stars do not make this ace enough justice. This place is as much an icon of Buenos Aires as an other famous landmark.

Splendid interior, well worth the stop over to take in what is has to offer. Note that they will shuffle people out and turn around would be patrons well ahead of closing time (30 minutes +), thus plan accordingly. Nothing like a slice of apple pie for breakfast to kick start your day!

Historic Cafe. Beautiful building, regular food a little overpriced. You pay for the history of the place.

This coffee shop was established in 1858. It has a lot of old charm. It was visited by foreign presidents, musicians and actors. There are lots of old memorabilia on the walls. You should try the hot chocolate with "churros" (a local pastry), it is a must. Sometimes, you have to queue up to go in, although ,yesterday, we were in without any waiting. I believe they have special nights with musicians onsite, check their website.

When you enter Tortoni you thought you were send back in time. I do not know about this place but the feel will tickle your interest to find out why this cafe is very famous. Come see for yourself…

The Churros with Chocolate are delicious, same with the medialunas. The coffee is the kind served in all others Classic Porteño Cafes (not good), but you go for the experience, which comes with at least 20+ minutes of queue outside, which are worth it if you ask me.

Touristic, but still went because a local did recommended it. It's nice and you can see the nostalgia.... But that's about it. Bartenders are less caring and drinks are... Well... Just normal. Just go to say you've went, grab a quick coffee... But there are nicer places in BA.

Went for the Tango show, it was excellent. Small intimate room, ten tables, small stage with two dance couples, fantastic dancers, stunning. Fun singer and drummers too. Excellent value, more affordable than big tango shows.

(Translated by Google) It is not for nothing that this cafe is considered one of the most beautiful because of its beauty. Opened in 1858, it opened its doors to presidents, scientists and celebrities. It is very atmospheric and filled with the very comfort that is so characteristic of establishments of this type. I recommend the cakes. As well as table reservations. The kitchen is no frills, good quality and tasty.

The cafe is beautiful inside with a lot of Original features, but felt the food at lunch was pretty average. Whether this improves for the dinner I can't say. We did have to queue to get in, worth it to see inside but maybe just grab a coffee or breakfast there.

The food and coffee is rated three stars but I added an extra star for the beautiful interior. I understand why you must visit this cafe as a tourist. This cafe contains so much history and there is a little museum in the back to show much of this history. The food and drink, however, are very standard. For a place this beautiful and much visited, I expected a quality of coffee and food to be very good. The coffee and medialuna tasted like your standard coffee and medialuna you could pick up at any neighborhood cafe. The chocolate cake and orange juice were alright but the best food was the ham and cheese sandwich with toasted bread. The cheese was melty and the bread was toasted perfectly. We ordered the tortoni and added another coffee with two medialunas and it was enough for two people to share for breakfast.

I only recommend going early as there are several tour buses that leave the gigantic queue. Atendimento excelente. Wonderful experience at historic Cafe Tortoni! The wealth and decadence for Tiffany glass ceilings?! We ordered a light lunch, Kale salad (esalada veggie) was lovely and fresh - kale tomato avocado and walnuts. The chocolate y churros a nice dining- the churros fresh and crispy, the chocolate hot and thick- hot frothed milk on the side - to dilute to taste. Our waiter quite good despite the steady line out the door. All reasonably priced at the official exchange rate, a steal at the blue rate (salad 7-8 usd choc churros 5 usd- blue rate). We waited about 15 minutes to enter.

This historical cafe was definitely filled with tourists. It was fun to experience. The churros and sandwiches were tasty but the coffee was excessively hot and strong for my tastes. The line can get long but it does move fairly quickly.

Really enjoyed my lunch and coffee. I started with chocolate con churros. The hot chocolate was really good and well presented. The churros were good and filled with dulce de leche. Then I had hamburguesa con queso, I hate to say it, but it wasn't the best. It expected superior quality beef, although it tasted good and I ate it all. To finish, I had a cappuccino. It tasted good and was strong coffee, just what I needed to set me up for my day of sightseeing. I was encouraged to have a look around and take photos. I won't share them as I don't want to spoil any surprises for your future visit. I think I queued for 10-15 mins at 13:00 on a week day. Very lucky with a quick moving queue. Definitely add this beautiful cafe to your wish list when visiting Buenos Aires.

Nice place to visit, not only to eat 🙂 There’s always a queue, but it's worth waiting. I went there on a Sunday and only waited for 15min

📝 I had to visit this historic Cafe, especially after seeing a long line each time I walked by. The outcome was somewhat disappointing. 🍴 I ordered a Tortoni salad, which is the main reason for lowering my score. The salad had some greens, crudo ham, cheese and a bit more. The ham was very prominent in the plate but was subpar at best: it did not taste good and it was too thick, making it difficult to chew it. Also the cheese and nuts in the salad were not sufficiently good and tasted like something closed in a box for a long time. 📍 The location is good, very close to Plaza de Mayo. Also, the cafe itself is also pretty cool inside, keeping the nostalgic vibe of its past. Of course, this is an extremely touristic cafe. ☝🏼 A final note on service: mixed feelings here. On the positives: it was kind and quick to serve. On the negatives: my table hadn't been cleaned properly from prior customers and my finished plate was never taken away until I asked to pay... I noticed this was common: there were many empty tables with dirty dishes still there for several minutes without anybody taking them away.

One of the biggest tourist attractions in Buenos Aires. The line is long pretty much all the time. We went around 8:15am and there was no line. We walked in a got a table. When we left around 8:45 there was a line around the corner to get in. Only got some croissants and churros no food. You really go to see the interior.

The decor is nice. The food and beverages are much more expensive than elsewhere in buenos aires. However, what really annoyed me was waiting 30-40 minutes in a queue when there were plenty of empty tables and wait staff inside. It was essentially an artificial line...

  • 5/5 Sabrina G. 7 months ago on Google
Bar waiting 1 hour in a queue for a table I do believe it was worth it! The place is beautiful and has so much history. You are able to wall round and there is a room like a mini museum. I had hot chocolate and churros, best I've had in South America

The café experience at Café Tortoni in Buenos Aires is an absolute gem. Steeped in history and culture, this iconic establishment offers a unique blend of vintage charm and warm hospitality. The elegant ambiance, coupled with a rich variety of coffee selections and delectable pastries, creates a truly delightful experience. The café's dedication to maintaining its traditional atmosphere while delivering impeccable service is evident in every detail. With its artistic flair and attention to quality, Café Tortoni undoubtedly earns a well-deserved 5-star rating as a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Buenos Aires' coffee culture. But we wait 1 hour outside

Very cool historical café! Considering the reputation of this place, the prices are reasonable, and honestly, the coffee is very high quality. We were here in mid-morning, so we also got a ham and cheese sandwich, which was surprisingly really good! The churros are great too, but pretty regular. Overall, the café offers high quality coffee, in my opinion and is worth a visit due to its historical significance if you’re in the area!

We waited 20 minutes in the queue to get in. Once inside, we order a coffee with some alfajores. Worth the visit, but the expectations were very high. I liked Confeteria Ideal better :)

This is supposedly one of the oldest and most famous cafes in buenos aires. It has very significant cultural importance and is prepared to stay in line for 30-40 minutes to get in. Although the interior is very impressive and puts you into the atmosphere of the 19th century, the food isn't that good. The waiter recommend to take a steak. It was the average American diner quality. Another thing - being a tourist attraction, they don't have a menu in English. So, thanks to the developers of Google Translate.

Classic cafe from back in the day. Queue to get in but it goes quickly. You could be in Vienna but you’re not. Great breakfast.

I speak little Spanish, and the server kindly switched to English for me. The hot chocolate and churros were recommended to me and they were delicious! The cafe itself is a step back in time and worth waiting in line.

Overrated. We were to a queue about an hour. When we entered inside there were many free tables !! We couldn't understand why they don't permit to enter more people. The interior is beautiful .The café and the chocolate were average and the sweets too.

Nostalgia cafe is a very rare find these days. Chocolate with churros was good but wished it was hotter. Piedras train station right in front of this cafe. Expect to wait in queue to get in. There’s also 1 hour Tango show downstairs for like us$25 reservations required.

What a great space. Oldest cafe in BA and had a lot of character and history. Pictures and artifacts share some of the history of this cafe. Decor is beautiful.

** DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ** Worst service I have had in Argentina. Long waits while lots of seats are available (to those that don’t understand, tourist trap to make you think people take long inside because they are enjoying). Food was terrible, extremely expensive and boring. We had to ask for the bill about 4 times, waiter looked like he was mocking us most of the time, no attention or care about if we were enjoying

Popular spot. Oldest coffee house in Argentina Coffee with vanilla ice cream was outstanding. Waited in line about half an hour to get a table.
