In short: absolutely terrible sanitary conditions & our money and belongings went missing. When we checked in, the place was way different than the pictures - rusty furniture, mosquito nets with holes, bugs - as if it hasn’t been cleaned for years. The owner tried to guilt us into doing a trekking with them saying he already arranged it for us (we never set a date?) but suddenly changed his tone saying no worries thanks for coming. We went hiking, on our way waved them goodbye, and everything seemed fine, but we came back to the room from the jungle to discover almost all of our emergency money gone missing from our luggage, together with my boyfriend’s brand new jungle torch. Now believe me, we hid it well. We were missing the money equivalent for trekking, transport and left just 200,000 IDR - just enough to pay for our restaurant bill at check out (what a coincidence!). When we anxiously headed to reception and said money went missing, the man (I think it's a family business and he's not the brightest bulb) provided us with contradictory statements- from “we watch your rooms from here so nobody comes in”, to “we never go into your room” and then “”we can’t see your room from reception” and finally “even if someone was nearby we say it’s private” to my ultimate favorite “but what went missing? do you need anything else because I want to go home now?”. Finally, they laughed to each other as we headed back to our room. The money we had left was not enough to cover our costs to travel to the airport the next day so they suggested my boyfriend going to an ATM down a steep path in the jungle (in the night, no longer having a torch)- there's no power generator also, so power shortages occur at night (keep that in mind, it's not mentioned elsewhere!). Now, a friend of our friend had a similar situation elsewhere in the world where they took her to an ATM only to put a knife to her throat telling her to withdraw more cash. I immediately opened their reviews and saw that while they're a high rated properly, people sometimes give 3 stars and mention money going missing, and the negative reviews also mention them but they're lost within the sea of 5* reviews (it's such a shame we didn't read them or listened to locals who warned us not to stay there!) Thank Gods we separated our money and I had some hidden USD elsewhere so we could arrange a drop off to the airport and also pay our restaurant bill. To make things even more ridiculous, even at that point they said their currency exchange is different and overcharged us (the alternative they offered us was to book an additional "fake" night via Booking as form of payment- I wonder why their rating there is so high?!) This experience costed us a LOT of stress. Learn from us!

Really loved my stay here! The location is what really made it perfect - right on the edge of the national park and completely away from road traffic (you have to hike in via an uphill trail). I didn't bother going into the village much as the bungalow restaurant serves tasty food and I was really looking for the quiet environment. Even saw an orangutan on the trail leading up there! The bungalow was cute, clean, and comfortable and the staff was very friendly. Loved doing yoga on the terrace they have looking over the jungle. They kept my bags while I went on a trek and everything was in perfect order. All in all, great stay 😊

This place is the best! The staff is really friendly and easy going. We had a great bungalow for 5 persons, everything we needed was there. The staff helped us out with a jungle trip and told us so much about the jungle. Great memories, really good food, lovely place!

-Great Location -Very friendly staff (Ruben, Dedi and Ronnie our guide) -Very tasty food including breakfast lunch and different juices (and perfekt uncomplicated laundry service) -Calm place in the middle of the nature at the border to the national park, in the morning we often saw a lot of monkeys -Dedi organized our pick up and drop of to the airport in Medan with Salim who stopped with us on the way to get a SIM card and have local dinner, a realy nice guy! :) also a perfect jungle treck with Ronnie including a lot of action and different animals, while trecking they took care of all of our belongings! (we felt realy safe and welcome all the time) - The room was clean and nice :) - they picked us so and dropped us off at the Taxi an carried out bags to the bungalows :) Would recommend this place 10/10 and we would love to come back some day! All the best to Dedi and his team :)

I loved it! Everyone was so kind the staff the guides the cooks! I dont know what to say. We hiked through the national park and we saw soo many animals. My favorite experience was when a orang utan came from the jungle and walked right past us! Once in a lifetime experience! A must do when traveling the world! I read a lot about money stealing, but nothing like this! When going on the Jungle Track, i left all my belingings in the bungalow and nothing got stolen! I dont know what happened to them. They were all very nice…

An amazing stay at Orangutan bungalows. The host was very responsive and organised the best tour with Henri. We went trekking for 3 days and whilst it was challenging we had an amazing time and saw lots of wildlife. The accommodation you stay in beforehand is a little basic and smells a bit weird but isn't too bad (just a bit old fashioned and bugs can get in). Note: you have to walk 15 minutes to get to this accommodation (a little difficult if you have a big bag).

We stayed in 3 different places in Bukit Lawang and for us it was by far the best. As a couple, we stayed for 4 days in one of the 3 smaller bungalows (for 2 people). They were basic but cozy, clean and bug-free. I want to insist on CLEAN because other reviews mention cleanliness issues and broken stuff, which was not the case at all for us (middle bungalow). It was actually one of the cleanest we got in two weeks in Sumatra. It was perfect for us because we didn't want to follow the pattern "go in -> trek >> go out" but instead we wanted to hang out before and after the trek to enjoy being close to the jungle. Bukit Lawang sees more holidayers and less travelers so you'll find that everybody in town assumes that you are there only for the trek and that you're gonna go right back to your daily life after that. At Ourangutan Bungalow the staff was very friendly even before we mentioned our intention to do a trek - although they did mention the "trek" keyword at every other interaction but that's really a Bukit Lawang thing :D Anyways, it's a little bit of uphill walk to get there so I think that's perfect for you if you know what you want: chill, staying for a while, in nature, good sleep (quiet, cool), thomas/silver monkeys 30 seconds from the location - even a orangutan was very near there around 9:30 for 3 mornings in a row - on the path right before entering the property. Maybe it will be less your thing if you just want to do a trek and leave, since it means doing part of the trek with all your stuff - because the property is right at the entrance of the National Park - instead of the next morning with your day pack. Also more pressuring if going to the airport early although I am sure the staff can help you with that. I forgot to mention the food which was excellent as long as you like authentic Indonesian food. Prices are reasonable in the 25-40k range. We had breakfast and dinner there.

Cute and clean bungalow right next to the jungle. The area looks well maintained and the food served is excellent. The bungalows are quite far from the main area in Bukit Lawang. You have to walk up stairs for 10-15 minutes, but worth it!

ATTENTION TRAVELLER! We know the room are cheap, but beware of staying there, because travellers report money and belongings going missing and our money had disappeared! You will find other reviews about this. I do not advise anyone staying there, even out of pure solidarity and how they mock those who post negative reviews.
