Farmgate Backpackers Bundaberg East

Hostel

😠 This was the first farm I worked on back in 2019 when I first arrived, I stayed for a month. Since then, I have completed all 3 WHVs, working on various farms around eastern Australia. This place is an absolute last resort. The place you go when you first get to Oz and don’t know how to navigate how... This was the first farm I worked on back in 2019 when I first arrived, I stayed for a month. Since then, I have completed all 3 WHVs, working on various farms around eastern Australia. This place is an absolute last resort. The place you go when you first get to Oz and don’t know how to navigate how and where to find good farms. The owners are friendly on the surface, but can quickly turn on people if they have a single lapse in judgement. I was paying $204/week in an 8 bed-dorm with no AC in summer, More than I’ve paid for a private room in Aussie cities. I could go on but I’d just suggest you find elsewhere. Everything about this place is unstable and unpredictable, aside from the rules. If you’re a UK lad looking for a frat Boot Camp setting then this is your place. Otherwise, do a bit more research and find yourself a job on a farm with a farmhouse or some form of on site accomodation.

A very friendly, family like working hostel providing good quality farm work with high standards of working. Brain & Christine have built up the hostel to have a really great atmosphere with brilliant facilities such as a pool, communal areas inside and out, shared kitchen and bathrooms, and lovely dorm rooms. Hygiene levels are really high and the whole hostel is cleaned every day to ensure the place doesn’t become smelly with hot sweaty backpackers. Occasional parties every once in a while, but not every weekend as they understand people are working hard on their farms and the hostel is a place to rest and rejuvenate. Location is really good, short 20minute walk to Bundaberg town centre. Pub located nearby, and plenty of open fields to relax as a group. Transport was provided by the hostel to and from work, and also twice weekly to the supermarket to grab some food. This hostel gave us a perfect platform to complete our 88 days, build friendships we have kept for life, gain experiences that have helped us progress in life, and helped us save lots of money to continue our travelling. Definitely recommend to any backpacker wanting to complete their farm work.

Best working hostel to get your days done. Staff are amazing and will always do their best to get you a good hourly paid job. If you are respectful you will get respect back. If you're looking for a party hostel and you're not willing to work hard then go somewhere else.

I stayed in East Bundy for 4 months in total, I finished my farmwork after 3 months but decided to stay a month extra. The people running the hostel really try to take care of everyone and make everyone feel like home. This place was really a home away from home for me. From what I have heard from other working hostels in Bundaberg I think it is definitly the best one. The hostel is very clean and has a lot of places to relax after a hard day of work. They try to put you on the best jobs available as soon as possible. I really dont have anything bad to say about this place.

Just completed my 88 days in this hostel- It was some experience. I recommend this hostel to anyone who is looking to get their days done and meet amazing people. There are a good few rules in place but when you need to get up at 330am for work you do appreciate these! Its also nice to know you will be coming home to a clean environment. The hostel parties are always fun and it is located near cheap pubs so you can blow off some steam after a hard day at work. Some people need to be reminded that they are in a working hostel and not on holiday! Thanks to Christine, Jo and the bus drivers for helping me along the way! Good luck with all the new backpackers :)

Having completed my 88 days farming whilst staying at East Bundy Backpackers I would highly recommend. I began my farmwork in another local hostel and due to poor payment and working conditions I apprehensively decided to go in search of a more reliable hostel. From the beginning Christine and Jo were very helpful. I got a job in a couple of days. Demand and supply, they need people to fill their contracts needs. I was extremely lucky in that my job was an all year round contract and wasn't weather dependant as I worked in greenhouses. Friends of mine with different jobs experienced a bit more hardship and delays due to weather conditions. Anytime anyone was no longer working with a particular farm for one reason or nother they would be in standby until a new role was available, which was never too long as there is a constant flow of people coming and going, completing their days. Cars are also provided for travelling to and from work which is a huge plus. The owners run a tight ship. Strict but very fair! They also are extremely understanding and approachable. No drinking in the hostel apart from the monthly hostel party. Midnight curfew if you are to be at work the following day, but most jobs have the weekends off so this is to be fair to everyone working as the days start early. Thoroughly enjoyed my time at EBB. Met the most amazing people in a safe and fun environment. Thanks for looking out for all the backpackers that come through your doors.

I had the funniest time at East Bundy Backpacker! Lived with over 100 people but the hostel makes it feel like it's less people because of all the good common areas. The manager and the staff are serious and it's a good hostel to stay at if you want to make sure that you will complete your farm days.

I was very lucky that after a long search for the right working hostel, I ended up in East Bundy Backpackers (EBB). I prefer a safe, and caring environment with some nice areas to chill to have some nice conversations. EBB was perfect for me. Over the course of my stay in Bundaberg I heard some stories from other backpackers staying in other hostels in Bundaberg and apparently the safety standards in these hostels are terrible, because strangers can enter the hostels at any time and the recovery conditions are really bad, because they are party hostels. + The safety standards are as they should be, which in this industry means far above average, thanks to Mama Bundy ❤️ + The managers of the hostel are dedicated and will do their best to get you a job, even if gaps happen, which it can occasionally. You will see that they almost spend more time at that hostel that you will. + The organization is great, every worker and bus driver is where they are supposed to be on time. + The hostel has everything you need. There are a lot of different kinds of community spaces like dining inside and outside, smoking area with sofas, a huge cozy lovely non-smoking sofa area, kitchen, pool and TV room. The hostel also has a laundry room, a big fridge and several parking spaces in a surveillance area. + They organize a three-weekly theme-party, which is great to network with all the new members to the hostel. + The farms that the hostel is collaborating with are very ethical and well organized. The farms act formally correctly and e.g. part of fair work ombudsman to make sure that you are treated fairly. Don't get me wrong, it's still tough, but that's the nature of the farm industry. + There is an Anytime Fitness right next door and another gym very close which coupled with the farm work will make you buff in your 88 days. If I will gonna do my third WHV year for which i need to do half a year of farm work next year and I am already looking forward to coming back to EEB! Greetings to the managers, I miss you guys!

I just got off the phone with Christine looking to book. I didnt get a chance to book as theyre full at the moment, but Christine stayed on the phone with me to better explain the current 88 days farm work situation and how I could find alternatives. She sounded very busy, but took the time to give me help knowing I wont even be able to stay. Thank you Christine.

I completed my farm work here. It was cleaned on a very regular basis and the staff were great with getting you work to complete your visa requirements. I really enjoyed bundaberg overall as the locals were really nice and I enjoyed the laid back lifestyle.
