I still like The Commonwealth very much, and I miss the broken empire on which the sun never sets. Alas!

If you are into heritage houses and history, this is the place for you. I donated $2 so it was affordable to visit. I like how the tour guides shared the history of the house. It was well kept. Only downside is that it is only open on weekends. Definitely recommended!

It was close when we went there, but looking to the house that was build 1865 was still in good shape. We visit here as we would like to know historic history of the place.

Went in with a friend without any appointment on a Sunday afternoon. We were immediately greeted by Lynda who gave us a wonderful, in depth tour, and she was able to answer all of our questions. You’re awesome Lynda! The house was beautiful and full of many interesting artifacts. Entry and tours are by donation, recommended $2/person or $5/family. Cash only. This is a great place to kill 30-60 minutes on a weekend, and learn a little something new about our community’s history, for just a toonie!

A hidden gem in the historic city of new westminster. Scottish and British inspired architecture as well as interiors. Even if you are not much of a history enthusiast, you'd like this place. They give you a guided tour of the house. The staff is friendly and they guide you through the house very nicely. Sculptures and artifacts from the Victorian period are all over the house. Overall a nice experience. (Don't forget to keep some change for donation by choice, also when you are done with the tour ask them to tell some exciting ghost stories and incidents.)

I had such a great time! The guide has worked there for twenty something years and was so knowledgeable and helpful! You could ask about any artifacts in the house and she would know the full history! So worth your time if your ever in new West. Go visit and learn about our Canadian history!

Great museum to dig into previous century living! Museum staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, we have discovered new things and had a great time with children! It is free to enter the museum and to have a guided tour, you may make a donation afterwards. Strongly recommend!

This is a well kept museum/preserved home of British and Scottish background; we found the staff very accommodating and friendly. The metro van area is relatively non historic compared to many other parts in the world so its fun to have this type of underrated visit about. You wont be spending a lot of time here due to size but its fun experience in how homes used to be and the classic way of living. A nice little gem right in new west.

Very personalized tour from 'Robin' I would recommend him. He's not a bird, he's a fella! Lovely bit of history of New Westminster. The first house ever built there. As original buildings are thin on the ground in Vancouver, this is a must-see! Step inside the airconditioned atmosphere and while away a very enjoyable hour. The house was built with some style and this is still reflected in the original wallpapers and carpets in some rooms and some furniture and bric-a-brac from the original family's collection.

Time stop in Victoria days, nice place to visit, remember to prepare some coin for donation. Suggest $2 for individual, $5 for family. Open hour is short, only 12:00 to 4:00 in winter.

Me and my youngest daughter came a long way from surrey. We had 10 minutes left before the museum closed. The guy greeted me rudely by saying there was 5 minutes left and I'm not allowed to go in to view. To protect the house protection had nothing to do with us viewing it. He was rude and turned us away. I will never go back there again

I visited the Irving House on 29 December 2023. Learned a valuable history of Captain William Irving and his families, and interesting stories about the house. The pianos in the house were beautiful. The tour guides, Lydina and Robin are very knowledgeable. It was a super visit.

It's all about history and a beautiful heritage home. A very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide greeted us at the door and told us everything we'd want to know in about 45 minutes. Then you donate money and sign the guestbook...Oh and a lovely lady plays the piano while you're there and she really knows how to play! If you're into heritage homes and history go visit Irving House.

A quaint little historical house in downtown New Westminster. The museum interpreters are very warm and welcoming and know a lot about the home. It takes about 30 min, maybe, to go through the tour. Admission is by donation, so you can't really go wrong. It's an enjoyable visit, and great if you need a quick break from the outdoors. We've been twice (just walked up each time) and had no issues with it being too busy; but it's still probably best if you reserve a timeslot ahead of time.

I first learned about Irving House while reading Ghost Stories of British Columbia. The house was featured as one that has had numerous sightings over the decades. Having had a few experiences in my lifetime, I thought I'd visit and see if I felt anything. During the tour, I hung back in the doorway of the dining room because I was hearing something. It sounded like a dinner party, complete with cutlery touching dishes, happy talking, and laughing. It sounded tinny and far away but it was undeniable and lasted at least 15 seconds. A loud voice from the tour group down the hall startled me and I could no longer hear the party. I've been back at least a dozen times since then without experiencing anything further but I love the house and the family's story. The museum used to have a secondary building with more very interesting pieces that had been donated by families around the city. It also had a lovely gift shop, but for some reason, they had to discontinue using the building and the gift shop couldn't be opened anywhere else on the grounds. I think you can still see some of the antique furniture and items at the New Westminster museum down the street. The house alone is worth a visit though. I go back every few years and still enjoy it.

Tracy is a great tour guide. My friend and I enjoyed her stories about the history of the house, and it was interesting to see the rooms and furnishings. It was a nice way to spend some time on a rainy day.

I wish we could have seen inside. We drove all the way from Seattle Washington to visit... The door said they were open till 5, however they lock the door when their last tour takes place at 4:30... I guess saying our open till 5 and locking your doors a half hour early are 2 different things. We got there at 4:40... We didn't want a tour. We just wanted to poke our heads inside and take a peek... The 1 star is for the beautiful grounds outside.

The people were extremely friendly and a wealth of knowledge. They even went so far as to look up answers to the questions I asked that they weren't sure of. I felt they deserved more than the recommended $2 but alas that was all I had brought in cash. One thing to note, they only wear period garb during the peak season.

Wonderful place to go back in time to 1865. The two tour ladies are very knowledgeable and had many stories to tell about the family that owned the house. We hope to come back for the Christmas tea.
