This was by far the most horrifying experience I've ever had as a frequent traveller. I have been travelling for over 7+ years and work in the hospitality industry (flight attendant + hotels). The staff here are extremely unprofessional and incompetent. Unfortunately, I had high hopes but I became a target of theft and the manager Linda Roman & staff neglected to follow up with me when I brought it to their attention. I had booked a private room and over $3000 worth of things went missing. My cash, new underwear from victoria's secret and earrings. The manager said she had to go through the footage and figure out how this could have happened... no one has gotten back to me, it's been over two weeks. I highly recommend if you're looking for a place to stay DO NOT cheap out and book a stay here. I understand it's a hostel, and people are going in and out, and that's why I had booked a private room and paid more assuming that my belongings would be safe. I never thought my $2700 would go missing along with my underwear (weird flex) and my gold earrings. I had checked out and they apparently didn't charge me for my stay, this only became apparent until I came back to notify them that my money had gone missing because I had to go exchange it at the bank. When I opened my pouch the money was not there and I had not taken the pouch of money out of my room the entire time I stayed there for safety reasons. I hope no one has to go through what I did while staying here. Please be careful with how much trust you put into this place. I was blindsided and naive to believe that even after booking a private room that my things would be safe.

Stayed here for one night which was one night too much. Cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. Pros: Not much really. The location is OK Cons: -Pool water was not clean with leaves and dirt -Sheet on the bed only covered half of the mattress so you'd partly sleep directly on it -No soap in the bathroom -No hot water in the shower -Restaurant food was really bad. Nachos plate should have beans but there were just traces of it, and the portion size was less than half of the other nachos we've had in Mexico. Hamburger was just a sad story with rosemary chunks and a tired lettuce slice. It comes with half a portion of fries and a tint of mayo and ketchup. Had to ask for more ketchup and we received an empty ketchup bottle... -Included "breakfast" was really poor with a few potato pieces, dry piece of bread and two eggs. Must choose between coffee or juice, can't have both without paying extra -Bar happy hour is only valid for base drinks such as "vodka/sprite" and none of the other drinks on the menu. -Very loud at night

The location is perfect. Everything is within walking distance. That is the end of the good. Toilets are often plugged. There is the smell of the overworked old sewer system by the pool and coming up through the hole in the floor of the bathroom. The lounge beds by the pool were plastic with no cover. But lots of cigarette burns. Pillows stunk of mold. Bugs, mosquitoes, bed bugs and iguanas in the rooms. Pool was filthy dirty. No blanket. Some of the staff were amazing, others ran and hid in the back rather than address problems. Kitchen is filthy dirty, fridges are over packed, bugs get into food left out. Yoga instructor would not listen that I had a concussion and could not do certain moves and she shamed me for my inability. I wish with all my heart that Selina would fix this place up because it is a beautiful property and a great location. But they just keep charging higher and higher amounts and expecting folks to accept lower and lower standards of service.

RUN BY THIEVES- BEWARE!!! Rude staff who would dance at eachother and chat at laugh etc, while leaving guests waiting around for them to stop and actually be attentive. They over charged us by approx 50 dollars upon arrival at night, (looks like they do that to other guests too by the reviews). Room lock stopped working twice during our stay, I thought it was strange, as I was telling the reception staff member, another couple beside me were also telling her their room lock ALSO stopped working that day too - rather strange coincidence. The staff member didn't seem to care , acknowledge the seriousness of the situation or apologize, considering our room door was open ALL DAY as we were out exploring Cancun from morning till we came back that night. Despite the 'do not disturb' sign I left on the door handle, there was evidence someone was in our room. While I was staying there I saw all the negative reviews (recent ones and others going back years) on Google and saw many people had their rooms broken into and items STOLEN , I understood the staff were most likely unlocking guests doors to steal money, jewellery, laptops, cameras etc while they were out. From then on we had to bring all of our expensive/important items with us Everywhere as it seems this particular location is RUN BY THIEVES (or at least some of their staff members are involved in this). (Bringing all of your expensive stuff around to the beach etc is not how you should spend your vacation) Upon arrival our bedsheets had notably stained with some greasy stains. The only thing good about this place is the location.

Not great unfortunately. Check in took a long time with only 1 worker on reception & a travel sales guy. Normally the sales staff can pitch in when busy but not here. The room was okay, the windows were loose in the frame letting a lot of mosquitoes in but the bed & AC were good. No drinking water available which is a big negative. The pool & bar were good and the staff were very friendly, the location is excellent but the place is just so badly maintained. Worst were the bathrooms, probably the worst I've ever encountered in a hostel. Mosquitoes everywhere, no hot water, shower heads that sprayed the whole room and couldn't be angled. Used toilet paper in an open basket not emptied for 3 days which is disgusting, no hand soap anywhere. The sinks waste pipe was barely attached so using the sink just dumped waste water onto the floor. Toilets always clogged and barely fludh. They closed a bathroom for a day and a half to apparently fix something but absolutely nothing changed! I couldn't recommend staying here in its current state, and it's not that cheap either unless you book way in advance

Beautiful hostel by the lagoon. Was not a bad stay in general. Great sunsets. But the swimming pool was a bit dirty to🏊 swim. Breakfast was nothing special. Guys working at the bar are nice and helpful. But some front desk workers were not very friendly actually. We are in Mexico - a place where tourists come for fun, 🌅 sun and happiness. Stuff should not be this indifferent and boring

If you are looking for an inexpensive stay and do not mind a lower level of cleanliness, you will be happy to stay at the Selina. Pros: - The pool area is very nice and has a great environment. - The food is good, you just usually do not get fast service. - I also loved that they host exercise classes out on their pavilion. You can even volunteer to teach a group class during your stay. Cons: - The mattresses are not very comfortable. - They do not have hot water, just to make others aware. It was fine for us. - The level of cleanliness could use quite a bit of improvement. I even requested our bathroom be cleaned because there was shaven hair literally all over the counter/sink and the mirror had not been cleaned for quite some time. I know shared kitchens will always be a bit untidy, but the refrigerators are unusable 1. Because there is literally no space, likely because they are never emptied and 2. Because there are bugs all inside of it...

By far the worst hostel we have stayed in whilst in Mexico. Staff were so rude and so unhelpful it was a joke! There is an extra charge paid and when we asked what it was staff said they weren’t sure and it was a “ free upgrade” when we paid more. Unclear instructions upon arrival and didn’t let us know to strip our beds when we checked out it was apparently already said.I wouldn’t recommend this hostel. Also couldn’t get into the top bunk beds as the roof is literally right there, i kept hitting my head. There was also no hot water in our shower and shower pressure was ridiculous. The only ups were wifi and beds were comfy.

I wouldn't trust the staff at this hostel. They make you pay a deposit that's 300 pesos or ask for your passport as the deposit. NEVER give your passport as a deposit, you never know if the hostel can use it as leverage against you. Additionally, I saw other members of my tour group had their belongings dumped into a shopping cart by cleaning staff, who did not even change their bedsheets. I would be very wary of leaving anything valuable in your room during the day when cleaning staff come in. If you do have to stay here and you have a private room, make sure to indicate with your door sign that you do NOT want your room to be cleaned. The private room that I had was clean enough, albeit a bit dusty. The shower, however, was very gross and moldy smelling. Even if you are in a private room, I would wear shower shoes 🤢

Positives - the staff & great activities on each day. Negatives - our room (micro) smelled like mould. Shared bathroom was only cleaned twice during 5 day stay. Kitchen isn’t well equipped, not a single fork in the place. A staff member abruptly opened our room door at 1am whilst we were sleeping- no explanation for this. It’s a nice place but wouldn’t go here with high expectations.

Great location and vibes! Nice staff. Clean room and bathroom. I opted for a small private room with a shared bathroom and was surprised to find that my room came with air conditioning. Very nice! Communal kitchen has lots of cooking supplies and spices and it's a good place to meet and chat with other travelers. The staff even gave me a sack lunch to go because I had to leave before breakfast. My only complaint is that my mattress was very hard and being on the first floor by the pool meant that the music was still loud after I decided to go to bed around 10pm. I'd stay here again, though! Great value for my money.

Nice gardens and a pool. Your imagination can’t compare between the photos of the room to the actual one. Poor breakfast. If you are not a backpacker don’t even think about it

It's a good enough place to stay. There is a pool, which is nice. Breakfast was included with our stay which was also nice. The downsides were that the sheets were stained (only changed once in the week we were there), the hot water in the shower only came out hot 10% of the time, otherwise it was just warm, and there was no soap included in the room. There is a common kitchen, cinema, and library. The kitchen was handy to have, though not the cleanest. The hotel is in walking distance to the beach and lots of restraunts. Overall, I was pretty satisfied for the cost of the stay.

Encountered preferential treatment at check-in. Does not allow slightly early check in even at 2:10pm but allowed certain people to check in early instead (maybe locals who speak Spanish?). For me, they strictly enforce after 3pm check in, despite rooms are ready (slow weekday season with a lot of availabilities). In any case, the 4-person dorm I was assigned to the first time was atrocious - bad smell, hot, and messy beds. Asked for 2nd dorm, and it was much better with cold air-conditioning. Beware! No privacy screens in each bed, very exposed from every side, so had to be creative to make my own screens. However, the people staying in my dorm throughout my stay had been inconsiderate and unfriendly. All of them shared certain similarities - from Israel, young, party people, messy, loud and talkative (only with their own people), and like to slam doors even past midnight. As for en-suite bathroom, it’s small and dirty. No cleaning at all during my 3night stay. Bathroom has weird smell, always damp and the shower head is so bad hardly with any water pressure. Shampoo and body shower containers were empty and damaged, lying around the bathroom floor which was already disgusting to begin with. Housekeeper went in just to make up beds for new check ins and merely putting an extra toilet paper roll and did nothing else in the bathroom. As for activities, they are quite varied and have decent number of activities everyday. Most people don’t come out to join these but it was a pleasure to meet the extra hardworking and friendly staffs (Lucio, Viri) as they did an amazing job (and the intern as well, Banesa). Pool looked decent and the landscape was nice with lots of resident iguanas hanging out in the sun. This place has potential, only if they care more about the bedroom and bathroom condition. Instead of enforcing strict check in, they should try to enforce certain rules regarding unruly guests instead.

Room was basic. A/C, no TV. Pool was large and never overcrowded. No laundry at hotel. The hotel is set back, very quiet and private, away from the night life. 3 minute walk to the beach, 1 minute to supermarket, Starbucks and many restaurants. The hotel had a snack bar in lobby and a restaurant with amazing food. Mostly Tacos and burritos but amazing. I enjoyed the freedom to experience LOCAL food and entertainment. Aquarium 20 minute walk.

I've stayed here twice so far. Good vibes and price. Nice central location and views of the lagoon. I like the rooms. They need to work on the bathrooms though. The bathroom window screen was broken letting in mosquitoes. The shower head sucked and there wasn't hot water when I was there. The staff is nice for the most part. Nice large swimming pool, nice bar area and cool events like yoga classes. I'd recommend it if you're on a budget and aren't too picky.

Great location and a great price. Stayed here for 1 night to get a glimpse of the hostel vibe in Cancun. However, what they don't tell you are that you need extra cash to get: - Towel - Blanket - Room key Additionally, the bunk I was assigned did not have a charger. The wifi in the room was also unusable.

The vibe was great. Very safe, good drinks, great food and coffee. Beautiful sunset over the lagoon. We had a private room, small basic, but GREAT shower pressure with hot water. Location was great, walked everywhere.

Vibrant atmosphere with good food and great drinks. Have your confirmation number and identification information ready, the check-in process is a little slower than some other places. The A/C works well and the rooms are too cold. Shared space problems, right? Be ready to climb stairs. Second and third floor dorms. Nothing provided in shared bathroom areas. There seems to be more trash than usual in the landscaping and the rest ends up in the pool. Doesn’t seem to be any hospitality, groundskeeping, or clean up crew. HOWEVER, the food is great. The restaurant/bar staff is kind and accommodating.

This hotel deserves the higher overall score. I have no complains, only pluses. One of the pros is that the the staff is well-trained and friendly. Another one is that the hotel has a kitchen with refrigerators and stoves. I would add a toaster there. The hotel is located in a quiet zone so I was able to sleep with the window open. The territory is connected withe the lagoon, so there's a nice view around. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to pickup Uber there, because someone can't let it works in the Hotel zone.

It’s a real shame that the kitchen is so poorly maintained. Not one decent knife in sight, just plastic cutlery, usually dirty utensils… Other than that, the facilities are quite nice. Receptionist Tatiana was wonderful to us and super helpful! I think the prices of the hostel are a bit high for what you get in return, especially considering the coworking space is extra when it is highly advertised as part of the hostel. That was a real disappointment. Breakfast lacks variety, but what little they have is well served and quite decent. I don’t think this is a bad stay at all, we actually enjoyed it and extended it for another week, but my expectations for the price and the hype were higher. I wish they offered discounts for other Selina stays, some sort of loyalty rewards. It would make it a bit more worth it

The rooms were damp and dark like prison cells. The air smelled of mustiness which indicated some mold or mildew going on. The ac barely worked, if at all. The windows were bolted shut. It smelled and felt awful. I’ve been to a lot of hostels in the world and I’m surprised by the good reviews. It’s one of the worst.

The hotel is quite cool, big pool and a big area. Cinema + kitchen are also very nice. The price was good and the location as well. So you are wondering why I only give it a 1*? Here you go: The bed (dorm) is awful. I’m young and my back and neck hurts after a few days very bad. You don’t get a blanket or a towel - I never been in any hostel where I didn’t get a blanket. The dorms are very hot, our sleep schedule was so bad during our stay here. It was just uncomfortable even for a dorm. It’s kinda dirty and smelly - the stuff just don’t care about that. It’s not the main season, our 8-person dorm was only booked with 4 people during our 5 days stay - so there weren’t as many people as during the main season. In our room were many leftovers from other people who already left - no one cares. The shower and toilets where the worst I’ve ever seen in a hostel. I don’t think the get cleaned every day. It’s so smelly and dirty it was really awful.

Did someone say iguana? This hostel is best for a few nights as a stopover between your destinations. Good menu for breakfast and it is close to Coco Bongo and high street. It's about a few minutes walk, at the beginning of the street there are two original Mexican restaurants. And the hostel also has a hairdresser for those interested.

Great experience overall, internet and amenities were great for remote working and it was very easy to get on a trip to Chichen Itzá. There was some problems with an electric outage in my room but they moved me to a new one no problem

The Selina is a wonderful place to stay if you are in Cancun! The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the planned activities for guests are super. It’s only a few minutes from the beaches and is close to restaurants and nightlife if you want as well. The room was clean and comfortable, and the facilities are great as well!

Found another person sleeping in my bed and when we told reception they did nothing. Mosquitos everywhere, smelly dorms with no privacy curtains, people shouting outside the room until 8am, with other guests turning the light on and having showers at 3am. Most expensive hostel we've stayed in whilst in Mexico and absolutely not worth the money. Left the next morning and found somewhere else to stay.

Overall, I would say it was a pretty good experience for a hostel. I had a private room, but unfortunately, the bed was hard as a rock. So I’m glad I only booked for one night because sleeping on that bed more than a few nights would have really given me some back problems, I think. Also, there were just a few little things missing like they provide a coffee maker in room, but there were no cups for the coffee. The Wi-Fi info isn’t left in the rooms so I had to walk back to reception to get that. The rooms are OK. Not high end but also not terribly dirty. Just kind of middle of the road. Overall, the property is pretty nice and the location was really good. In the future I might stay there again, but I also would look for a slightly better place before coming back.

I am shocked that no one has mentioned the noise. This place is LOUD. So loud you can’t sleep. I went to bed at eleven PM and there was music blasting at the pool until at least two am, not to mention the excess noise from all the earth clubs. It sounds like it’s IN your room. The other guests all drink heavily - people run through the courtyard, bang on walls, doors, yell, etc…. there were fireworks at three am. If you’re looking to stay up all night and not sleep, definitely stay here. Otherwise, I do not recommend. I left after one night because the noise was so bad. Now that I’ve seen other reviews about things being stolen from the private rooms, I am very glad I made the choice to change hotels.

  • 1/5 Kristina R. 10 months ago on Google
Do not come here. We booked a private room and the mildew smell is very strong. Everything is damp, including the towels and sheets, and when we first entered our room there was a soaking wet bathmat on the bathroom floor. We’ve stayed in other hotels in the state so we know that it’s not just the climate making everything so damp. Between other guests’ making noise and party music and motorcycle sounds it is impossible to sleep. The bottom sheet on the bed does not cover the bed fully which is not hygienic….

Cheap, cute hipster spot good for a 20’s backpacker looking for a hostel dorm, but otherwise quality of minimal renovations and building is really subpar relative to pricing of private rooms along the strip. Everything is super old or cheap but just painted over…windows, doors, shower heads, smell of the old pipes. Kids working the front desk have attitude and no customer service skills

  • 5/5 Jesse V. 1 year ago on Google
Stayed here for 11 days over Christmas, had a great time. Booked a private room and were glad we did. Only issues we had was that the kitchen was not big enough for the number of guests, and the fridges were completly full. All in all we had a great time though, staff was super friendly.

  • 4/5 Yan N. 1 year ago on Google
This is the longest check-in of my life (over 50 trips). Waited in line for 40 minutes. Big hotel where there are only 2 people at the front desk that they are in no hurry to do their job. UPD. I'll be honest, I live in a hotel and everything is super. Large area, great location, very clean and well maintained rooms. But check-in is a complete horror. FIX IT.

A wonderful Holiday in an friendly Hotel, with laguna view and quiet atmosphere, but in the same time 5 minutes by walk to the beaches, restaurants and nightlife. Andy and Gus at the reception was very friendly, but in general all the staff speaks English very well and is kind. if you have no pretensions to hotels with many stars you will be very happy here!

The vibes was great! The workers are very nice and kindly. They heard we were celebrating a birthday and brought us a better room. It was the second time there and we will come back for third and 4th time. Thank you so much 😊

Gorgeous hotel, perfect location - beach is only a 7min walk. Friendly staff! Happy hour cocktails only 50 pesos. Beautiful sunset, the lagoon area around the property is stunning. Some negatives: there were no fresh towels available for us until 5pm, they charge 100 pesos deposit and 20 pesos cleaning fee. The room stunk a bit. Overall-would come back here again!

  • 4/5 Rish.traveller 1 year ago on Google
It was a nice experience over there. The staff is really nice and especially Ms. Andy at the reception. Comfort vise I would say they can improve a bit in the room. But overall experience was nice close to the beach food is good. With this price it’s worth staying there.

Okay so personally only stayed a night in a private room at Selina (no complaints, the room was perfect) on my last day in Cancun i had some time to kill but also was walking around with all my baggage so i went to sit at the bar before my taxi came. Was perfect because there is charging outlets, the pool is right hy the bar and you can order a drink and food. Got an awesome view too!

  • 5/5 Thai V. 2 years ago on Google
I enjoyed my experience here. I’ve stayed at other Selina locations and enjoy the different vibes for different location. I must warn anyone who actually decides to stay at night at this specific location & also varies on which room and building you’re in that the mosquitoes at night will feast on your soul, so take preventive measures to ensure you won’t wake up uncomfortable or covered in bite marks. Staff is super helpful and attentive. This place is great if you wanna meet other people and get away from the resort lifestyle and enjoy a low key area. Thank you Selina & staff for a fun experience and stay. See you again soon.
