In my opinion it's a classic Pub.. Friendly stuff and just chilled. Beers are always cold the music is always nice.

Great vibe with a bit of history. Started in 1808 as a lodge but got it's liquor license in 1836. Apparently even Cecil John Rhodes frequented the place as well. It's a pub with a great beer selection, lekker menu with friendly waiters. Been here a few times and the vibe is always great, so highly recommended for a visit

Nice pizza, the base is nice and thin. Tastes great. There was a dog walking about, think it's another clients', which was so nice to see. The BBQ Wings was nice as well.

A fantastic old school pub that has unique energy. The staff are super friendly and helpful and the beer and food are really good. There is very limited on street parking which can be a bit a of problem nevertheless I would highly recommend checking them out.

This is the oldest pub in the country. Good service and friendly staff. Unfortunately the aircon doesn't exist or work, meaning it can get fairly stuffy. Parking can be a pain.

Having visited the Percy from time to time over the last few years, it has also been wonderfully comforting. But the owner who greeted us at the door and seated us was incredibly rude. Despite not being very busy, as a party of 2 we were not allowed to use a table for 6. When a venue is full, I understand not having small parties at a bigger table doesn’t make sense from a business sense. But it wasn’t full, the table wasn’t booked and during our visit that table remained empty. It’s such a pity to have been confronted with such rude behaviour when the space has usually been such a great comfort.

Many years ago, I enjoyed this historic eating place. Sadly, its demise is almost in freefall. Two months ago, two of us were the only visitors on a Friday, at 13h15 - is this not usually a busy time for pubs and eateries? A broom and a bucket at a table???? What has gone wrong? The poor food quality is a manifestation of the demise of this once great pub. Also, it has been my last visit; rather, holding on to memories of yesteryear, will serve me better.

Worst service, food not what was on the menu with huge attitude from the waitress. This is the calamari with braised fennel and rocket. Except it’s only chips instead of fennel and rocket

I am sick to.death of being asked to review every place I go to. If I don't like a place, I don't go back. I do.not go to places based on some unknown person's opinion. Seriously. Get a life

I hope that it was purely by coincidence that we so happened to go to Perseverance for the very first time on Friday the 13th, only to experience the worst customer service ever. Our friend promised us the best pizza ever and cold beer, along with some live music. We received one round of drinks and no menus. After ordering our second round we never saw our waitress again. After 30 minutes I went to check for our round at the bar. The bar lady told my friend and I to go back to our table and wait. Our waitress was too busy serving their locals and was very good at avoiding our table. The manager was even better at avoiding eye contact and ignoring us waving our empty glasses at him. We were almost scolded by the bar lady again and sent back to our table a second time when we had had enough and wanted to pay! For a place that claims to be the oldest bar in South Africa they could do much much better. Never again, we are done! They will never see us again. The original proprietors would be so sad.

The oldest Tarvern in the Western Cape still going strong and being extremely hospitable still. I'm not going to say much but just go try it and believe me you will love it!!!

Tuesday night R50 a pizza special! Pizza's are delicious. Their bangers and mash are out of this world! Very friendly staff and great service. They also have a DJ on Tuesday nights. Certainly one of Cape Town's gems.

Very good pizzas. Wish more people would support this iconic pub. Maybe need one big TV screen for the sport and maybe a pool table right at the back outside.

Being an ex-employee, sad to see how dead it is on a Friday night. Lacking something...

Am told this is the oldest pun in SA, since 1836, however this place has changed hands many times and may have lost its touch. Was not busy at all and I visited on a Friday afternoon. Three of the beers requested were out of stock so not well managed and could be the reason for being empty. Becareful where you park there as there were lots of people walking around.

They re-opened after COVID, but clearly not the same. Sat for 10 minutes with nobody greeting or taking an order, then left for lunch somewhere else. Cape Town has many amazing lunch spots, and this doesn't seem to be one of them anymore.

it's my first time here and I appreciate the pub"s historical vibe and the burger I ordered was good...but customer service is plain down right KAK to be blunt...

Went there for lunch with a colleague from Gauteng, but was very disappointed with the service and menu. I had to go look for someone to assist us, after sitting there for about 10 minutes. There was no wine available. I could only order gin and tonic. That's it. The only food that you could choose from were bangers and mash and pizza, but they only had a margherita and three cheese pizza available. There was one ribs and chips left. What a choice. The lady that served us wasn't really helpful. She had the attitude of "I can't be bothered". Will definitely not visit this tavern again. With the right management, good food and service, this tavern can actually become a good place.

Okayish., 1st time visiting the pub. Went for the R60 Tuesday Pizza Special. The pizza was OK - very thin crust, good flavour. There wasn't much of a vibe, but that might be coz it's winter and there weren't a lot of customers. Solid 6 out of 10.

Dear Perseverance Tavern; Unfortunately I reported to your team about the lack of kitchen products, at the time you did not have fish or derivatives, bacon and several beer labels, limiting the menu to very few options. The service provided by the waitress was great, I gave her feedback, but the cashier and counter service were not receptive to these notes. I sincerely hope that you will improve the options, care and service. I also point out that I went on a Tuesday when the kitchen closed at 8:30 pm, half an hour earlier than usual, I insisted on the visit returning on Thursday which unfortunately limited the options and I found myself, half an hour later, being forced to change establishment due to lack of products for sale.

Great experience, old school pub where everyone chats to you. Nothing pretentious. I hadn't been there in 20 years and it's like going back home. We will be back.

The oldest pub in South Africa, but this location became unpopular for tourists and locals. Check their opening hours because on weekdays, they tend to close early, like at 7 pm.

  • 3/5 Heather M. 5 months ago on Google
Pizza was good, service as well. The place could do with a tidy up. But then you have vagrants sleeping across the road. They only had pizza, they said that they are redoing the menu.

Remembered the great times we had as students in the eighties at this place. Well should have kept the memories!! Now this is a dump!!! Entrance smells like a toilet that has not been cleaned for two weeks. Service was sadly lacking. And the food... Well I stuck my fork into my battered hake and was welcomed by a fountain of oil squinting out. I really like informal and casual dining... If this is the only place where you can get a table I suggest you go to MacDonalds!!

The atmosphere here is fantastic. There is ample seating available, and the service is very good. The food is also good, and they are very reasonably priced. Parking is a bit of a problem, but given the location this is to be expected. Having a drink at the oldest bar in South Africa is definitely an experience I would recommend.

Had a very bad experience there. Went there for the first time tonight, they waiter gave us menus, took our order. We been waitin for 45 min when i go ask about it. Someone tells me that the kitchens are closed, the guy didnt put our order through. Manager was trying to make it less worse by offering us drinks, but really ?

  • 5/5 Lauren 4 years ago on Google
There is a hidden Toad Restaurant at this pub! They turned an unhappy uber eats customer into a happy Tavern customer and offered us free drinks while we waited for our pizzas (because uber eats driver delivered the wrong ones).
