The staff are really friendly and accommodating but the sushi itself was horrible. The rice was wet and off (had a sour taste that not even the soya sauce could mask). The overpowering sour and densely packed rice was the main feature of all the available sushi-ratio of rice to any filling was grossly out of proportion. The salmon was washed out and without flavor. The prawn had no flavour at all and felt soggy(we thought the off rice was masking the flavour but you could not even taste the prawn when you removed it from the sushi and ate it alone). Could not eat much because there was so much sour rice that we were put off and even left pieces on the plate.

Great sushi from a small unassuming restaurant! I don't typically regard sushi as my ideal food to order because the portion size generally doesn't warrant the cost. However, Active Sushi offers three variations of an all-you-can-eat buffet (R 199.00; 299.00; and 399.00) which was made available to us at lunch time on Tuesday, despite the menu only advertising it as available from 17:30 — great service accommodating such a request! I highly recommend taking at least one opportunity and getting the R 299.00 option and sampling all the signature dishes!

Don't get me wrong, Active Sushi is probably one of the best sushi places I've been to in Cape Town - although there has been a recent issue that we noticed with the quality of their garnish. It might seem petty addressing this issue but the spring onion used as garnish is incredibly old and seems like they were prepared the day before and just thrown onto the sushi to save time, sure I get it but 5 out of 6 of us felt incredibly sick a day after we had went to Active Sushi. I also think the hygiene of the area has been very low, there were flies flying all over the place whilst we were eating and it's just sad that I had to write this review as Active Sushi is one of my go-to-places, but I'm not so sure anymore now after their relocation.

With the eat as much as you can on selected items on the menu you will have a sushi extravaganza. I recommend the sashimi even though not part of the special. It simply melts in your mouth. It doesn't get fresher than this. So do yourself a favour, take the special and added on some extra sashimi. The area where Active Sushi is right now is vibrant and alive. Car guards are employed by the owner to ensure your vehicle is safe. All in all, a great experience had by one and all. Will definitely go again.

Arrived at 8pm. It took a full hour for a simple miso soup starter to arrive and a further 20 minutes for sushi to arrive. Pathetic service.

UPDATE: Active Sushi management handled our complaint very well and invited us for a free meal at their Buitengracht branch. I am happy to say that the sushi was delicious and the service excellent. No gastrointestinal problems were reported by anyone and I will happily visit the small but cozy Buitengracht branch again. Original Review Below: We went as a group of seven friends on 2 January 2021. Instead of getting some nice sushi, 6/7 got acute food poisoning instead. We contacted the management team who were reluctant to accept any responsibility and only offered to give us more of the same sushi that made us sick in the first place. I am really disappointed. Active Sushi on Hudson street used to be great, but clearly it has changed for the worse. Avoid at all cost.

All you can eat Sushi. The sushi was absolutely Devine the seating was lovely spacious you can definitely do a intimate dinner or lunch with that special someone or go out for supper with the family. The service at the restaurant was impeccable the restaurant has a beautiful natural ambience. The only negative is the area isn't the safest but there's nearby parking and a security guard. Very poor service. Service took a long time. The plate I received was dirty and I didn't even get an apology. After paying I decided to tip a bare minimum because I was not happy with my experience. My waiter, whom was also the owner of the restaurant decided to add a 10% tip anyways, after telling me that its law in south africa, which it isn’t. He began vocalizing loudly telling me its his restaurant and he can do whatever he wants to. Just to be clear for everyone, he doesn’t have the right to add a 10% tip if you dont feel like the service lived up to it. Cannot recommend this place.

Amazing spot for sushi. If you are a sushi lover, this is definitely a must for you! They are super affordable and the food is so delicious and you can really taste how fresh everything is. Plus, it's in a great location on a less busy street and the space of the restaurant itself is very lovely. The big glass wall really makes it feel like you're sitting outside when you're inside and makes it more spacious. The only negative is that the service could be better - our waiter stepped in and out of an incredibly unnecessary and random attitude at different points during our visit at the restaurant. But other than that, it's a pleasant experience.

Some of the freshest sushi I've ever tasted; unique and affordable too! Plus I love that the Buitenkant branch never gets too crowded on an afternoon (at least that I have experienced), making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy delicious sushi (and other Asian dishes) with friends and/or fam. I would recommend the buffet option if going there for sushi.

My friend and I decided to go for Sushi here as Active sushi was highly recommended. Our first round of sushi was nice and our waiter was friendly. Our second round we received off sushi. It had a sour smell and taste and when informing our waitress she spoke to the manager (I assume) and the chef's and they blatantly ignored us and told us we are lying because to them it didn't smell off. It was a very distinct smell and we just got bad attitude and the staff speaking and laughing about the matter amongst one another in front of us. Extremely disappointed as we both took the all you can eat for R299 and that is how we were treated. No alternatives were offered and I feel like we wasted our money. We will not be back again. This was at the Buitenkant branch.

The sushi was fresh and tasty! Absolutely loved the deep fried options. They have 3 all you can eat (AYCE) options. I would say that they are slightly expensive compared to other places but having the different options were nice! We had the middle option. The service was great and quick. The friendly waiter explained all the options to us and answered all our questions clearly.

Great place with amazing sushi, they have incredibly made sushi, but service was a little slow. Would still recommend them though. Staff was friendly and there is a sushi buffet depending on your prices range and preferences, there are an all you can eat buffet of R199, R299 or R399. My favourite where the salmon roses and salmon California rolls.

A large group of us had a great dinner at Active Sushi on Buitengracht this past week. We all had the all-you-can-eat-option, which is a really good deal. The presentation of the food was lovely and the service was excellent. This visit has definitely made up for the bad experience our group had at another Active Sushi branch, and we very much appreciate that the management compensated us fairly for that. We will definitely be back.

I am very demanding when I eat sushi, freshness and quality is always more important than everything. Absolutely the best sushi I've eaten in this country. Service and quality of excellence.

Mediocre to okay sushi, slow service.

We waited quite a while for our food to be brought to us, most likely because we were a table of +/-10 people. Majority of us ordered an unlimited option of sorts and we ordered 2/3 rounds of food. The sushi was delicious and was of good quality! The R199 option is more than sufficient for people who like sushi and don’t necessarily need the weirdest and craziest types. There are pretty much all the normal types and all of the ranges of fish.

I ordered with uber eats. Firstly they took over an hour to prepare my order. The sushi was really good, but I ordered 20 pieces of sushi and got all of 2ml of soya sauce to go with. Absolutely ridiculous

Great food. Decent menu options but limited drinks. 2 amazing servers that seem to run the whole experience. Some background music would be nice but still enjoyable. Plenty of parking available. Try not to go when it is busy since the kitchen struggles a bit with too many orders.

I am one of your customers that was SUPER excited that you have re-opened. So I booked for a table of 5 for last night. We literally counted the minutes till we could be there. I mean... Your Sushi is just the best. BUT what a huge dissapointed. We rocked up just before 8 and waiter did not even look at any type of reservation book. So I guess that doesnt exist. We were shown a 4 seater table and was told an extra chair will be added. That meant that I would have had to sit back to back with guy behind me. Everybody was squashed it, NEVERMIND the Corona Virus and social distancing! Looked like sardines in a box. I then went to sit outside (did not want to be subjected to the risk of being contaminated), with no outside heater and was an ice block after 30 minutes. Whilst tryiing to eat some sushi, your clients at one of the tables inside, came out for a smoke break. Not one, but almost 10 people having their puffs right behind me!!! No waiter bothered to ask them to not smoke there. I am so disgusted in this whole experience, words cannot describe my annoyance. 😠😡
