Great food. Good service. Nice atmosphere. Right across from the beach so it's a pretty view. Overall fantastic value

The breakfast was very average. I ordered a hot chocolate with my salmon rosti. The hot chocolate was pretty cold and not as sweet as anticipated. The service from Elizabeth wasn't the best I've ever received, especially for an empty establishment, but she did try (I think). The salmon rosti was very underwhelming as I had quite high hopes for it but I guess I should have gathered from the price. It wasn't bad at all, I just think my expectations were very high. I have been here for drinks and snacks before and definitely think that's more the vibe than going for breakfast. This definitely didn't deter me from popping in when in the area. I think some places get certain things right and others don't. Maybe this way an off Sunday 🤷.

This is a family-friendly restaurant on the beach. There was a lovely view of the beach, but the staff were not always helpful and forgot about us often. Unfortunately, there were many children begging outside the restaurant for money. We gave them food instead of money, but they carried on asking for money and followed us to our car despite the car guards trying to get them away.

Best place in Hout Bay? Cape Town? Could be both. On the beach, cool kids, awesome vibe. Food fantastic. Highly recommended. Should be on the bucket list when visiting.

WARNING! Trash food and trash service. I don't write reviews often but this place is something else. Service: first thing they tell us is we could sit anywhere upstairs or downstairs. We go upstairs, nope can't sit there those are resevered all of a sudden.. Then we attempted to get a pizza to go and they tell us they can't do that.. moments later I see a to go pizza box. I'm not sure if it's because we are people of color but that is the vibe I got, so keep that in mind before considering this place. My sister had to get up multiple times to ask for water, hot sauce, and the check. The food: I ordered the catch of the day. It was the most bland fish I have ever had in my life. I forced myself to eat it because the place we were staying at didn't have any food nearby. Much regret because it ended up giving me diarrhea. Can't say much about the other food. I'm assuming the good reviews are because of the views and not the food, which didn't matter to us because we ate there at night. I always tip at restaurants, this is the first time I didn't because it was That bad. Would not recommend.

We are having a superb Summer this year despite obvious negativities so we decided on a visit to Dunes, the perfect name as the sand dunes were in the process of swallowing up the restaurant. So once we had waded through the huge mounds of sand, we were greeted and ushered to a table. After a discussion on the high corkage with the very pleasant Manageress we settled down to order. The Sushi was a nice appetiser and the plate of Mussels in a cream sauce was so large, we could not finish it but we enjoyed every mouthful. This we followed with pan fried Yellow Tail and crispy battered Hake, all surprisingly good and nicely presented. Altogether, a great way to spend a hot Summer’s day in Hout Bay.

They unfortunately just cant seem to get breakfast right. After 4 English breakfasts there in less than a month I can safely assume the chef either resents eggs or loathes customers. I'm there first thing in the morning and each time I get gritty black residue on the bottom of the eggs. Not a little, a lot. Today however was just disgusting. You realise that is all the residue from the previous day's service? Black as night. Notice the grey areas where the grit mixed with the egg whites. The funniest part was that I specifically asked the waiter today to please remind the chef to clean the grill. I guess the message fell on deaf ears.

It's all about the view and good vibes here. We shared the calamari and poppers here. Poppers weren't too hot and full of flavour. Calamari was well cooked and super tasty. Venue is dog friendly and there is a nice area outside for the kids to play while you enjoy the salty air and waves in the distance.

If I could give a 0 star I'd do that. The food was terrible, we actually left the dinner there. It wasn't great at all. Atleast the wine was good but that just bottled wine.

    1. Dirty windows 2. Sand in grilled baby calamari 3. Salat said to be mixed greens with spinach and rocket however only spinach was served

  • 2/5 Rudolf R. 3 years ago on Google
Beautifully situated on Hout Bay beach, it hurts me to provide such a bad rating, however, it has to be done to improve the place for the very simple reason that I like having dinner at Dunes again sometime in the future 1. Friendly Service 2. Dirty Windows 3. Dish 1 - Sand in Grilled Baby Calamari 4. Dish 2 - Which should have been Salad Greens with Spinach and Rocket - served Spinach only However, I have to highlight again the friendliness of the waiter

Food was very good, sercice was o.k but what annoyed me was the male manager on duty, he was constantly yelling at staff on the floor and in the kitchen, we found this behavior incredibly annoying.

Went here with my fiancé during our stay in Camps Bay over Christmas & NY, once for brunch. Nice food and lovely setting on / overlooking the beach. Not much to Hout Bay but this was good

The food was pretty decent and the view is definitely nice! The service was pretty slow though and if you wanted a server you really had to seek them out to order/pay etc. We got the mushroom pizza, the market fish of the day, the calamari and the spring bok carpaccio

  • 4/5 Dani E. 1 year ago on Google
Great service from the servers, really genuine and friendly people. The food is so not worth it. Overpriced and kind of meh. Fantastic view of the beach and ocean. The parking guard ladies really try to help by keeping an eye on the cars and navigating with reversing. Bring cash to support the sweet lady in the parking area, she sells handmade items. FYI when the power is out they have no backup plan to make cocktails.

Been to this place about three times. The venue location is beautiful as someone who has sat both at the top and the bottom of the restaurant. With it's location and view, and being the only restaurant on the strip by the beach it can get pretty packed. I feel this impacts the service as the waitors and waitresses always have their hands full but still make an attempt to be as friendly as possible. If you want a good table or quiet corner I suggest you reserve. It is also quite a kid friendly restaurant so lots of noise downstairs with a jungle gym and a designated child minder in the play area. There is also a specific section in a the ladies bathroom for changing nappies. The restaurant is surrounded by sand so it does get a bit sticky and sandy. Due to the lag in service some parts of the restaurant can look unkempt but in general the place is not too bad. There vegan options are minimal, slightly better as a vegetarian. Their focaccia like pizza base was very delicious , I ordered the Mediterranean pizza without the cheese and it was still scrumptious. There sushi was also not too bad. My sister ordered the calamari both times she visited with me and the second time was reported to be delicious with the first time being dry. Drinks a bit on the pricey side. View always amazing, can get windy (blankets provided).

Beautiful sunset, Mountain View’s with a nice low tide to allow for a good beach walk. The prawn curry had a good level of heat. The service was quick and friendly. The play area for the kids was lively and the sand, boat made it a different experience.

Great place on the beach, prices are not bad, would be great to see a greater selection of beer at better prices. The service was great and although Dunes does not have a dedicated wheelchair loo it is possible to use the available facilities with with a bit of planning and help from the staff. I did phone to find out if the venue was wheelchair accessible and unfortunately whoever answered the phone did not sound too keen for my business, I guess that means the tourists are back in Cape Town? The food was good and well priced however my steak was overcooked and not well seasoned also not the best cut, might be better to stick to the seafood options here.

Good service, good food. Small but good choice of wines. What do you want more from an iconic location with amazing beach life and sunsets. Had a bit of the shine of top-notch Dutch beach clubs.

One of the restaurants in Houtbay with the best view is the Dunes Beach Restaurant and Bar. It is almost on the beach with just a tiny street separating the two, and you have an amazing view of the beach/bay in front of you with Chapmans Peak on the one side and the Houtbay Harbour on the other. It really gives you that beach restaurant atmosphere, with a lot of outside seating options including some areas where you can sit with your feet in the sand and others where you can relax on "couches", sipping on a cocktail while the sun goes down. It is good to note that they also have indoor seating for those days when the weather isn't playing along. Although the food looked really good we only had a couple of cocktails which were very tasty. The waiter was also very friendly and although they were fully booked, because we only visited for drinks they made a plan for us and we managed to get a pretty nice table with a view. It is good to note that there is ample parking available and I recommend you make a booking if you are a larger group as they are very popular.

  • 1/5 Ricky T. 3 years ago on Google
Shocking. Hand written sign has multiple drafts mentioned, none of which were in stock. You can't order grilled calamari (only deep-fried) unless you order the R175 Patagonia option (which I did), this order doesn't even come with tartar sauce. Calamari very obviously frozen and extremely rubbery and tastless. I found a long peice of plastic in my calamari while chewing on it. I had a hair in my chips. I showed a waiter, he walked away and never returned. Eventually the owner came out and insisted that they had asked to replace it, this never happened. I was then still charged the full price of the meal. I will never come back here. Dunes used to be a destination when I was younger. Its very sad to have seen the service drop so low, especially while fighting to stay afloat in a pandemic.

Great restaurant, excellent location and staff very helpful. I had chicken livers with homemade peri peri sauce. Just delicious. Not expensive. All Covid-19 measures in place. You can have paperless menu, just scan the code and you get it on your mobile phone. Nice, large parking in front of the restaurant. There is also playground for kids, highly recommend.

Service was outstanding and what a view!!! The fish and chips are brilliant and my Pizza was top class. Very relaxed atmosphere, wait staff are super friendly. Can get hot so find a shady table. The parking can be a bit challenging if sand has blown onto the road in front of the restaurant. So if you do not have a large vehicle I would suggest parking before the sand, it an extra 100m walk.

Great service and the location is great. The only downside was they didn't have the drink I requested and I asked for my eggs to be sunny side up but I got them medium. Great atmosphere for breakfast especially. I would recommend dropping in and trying the Eggs Benedict.

Very nice and comfortable restaurant. Sea vibe but also a touch of class especially inside the restarant. Clean and friendly. Restaurant is also maintained well during difficult times and being a building right next to the beach. I would just suggest they do not allow people on the venue to ask for money or sell all kinds of charity things.

Called in to ask if I can make a booking, guy on the phone said "don't worry, there's plenty of space, just come through", so we did and it was a literal disaster. Nobody at the entrance to sanitize hands, check temperature or get details - as per regulations. We stood there for a good 15-20 minutes and nobody greeted us, so we made our way to literally the only empty table, which was dirty and had not been wiped down (restaurant was also packed to capacity), sat there for another 20-30 minutes with not an ounce of service. My partner was desperate for oysters so we waited it out. There was a sign on the table saying something about registering online using the free WIFI to download a menu, but the WIFI didn't even work. At this point we realized we were sitting in a super-spreader, as almost all patrons were without masks, drinking and having a merry loud time, we had not even received a "hello" from any staff so we literally ran out of the door like our lives were at risk. What a disaster, will never ever be returning - even if you paid me. Thank heavens we are the type of people to carry our own sanitizer and never remove a mask in these circumstances. On a side note, we found Oysters literally up the road for a 3rd of the price, and the service was great! The Lookout restaurant at the harbour were happy to have our patronage.

  • 3/5 Kris S. 3 years ago on Google
Portion size was good but the dishes lacked in flavor and wet-ish batter on the fish and calamari. Mostly just tasted like oil to be honest. Nauseous afterwards. 😔

  • 1/5 HAYLEY H. 3 years ago on Google
This used to be my favourite pre-covid. Sat down, and we waited. Eventually when served we were told we have to scan the menu and no, they do not have any other menu. Not fun if you don't have your cellphone with you! Would be great to be able to order any other food beside breakfast at 11.30a.m.

  • 3/5 Neil Parker A. 3 years ago on Google
Quiet. Lovely views. Decent meal. A bit disorganized and a bit of a wait even though patrons were few. But I guess COVID playing its part in all this. I support local regardless.
