An excellent museum with a wonderful guide. It was a surprise to go through the whole history of Dr C. Barnard and the heart transplant. A must if you are in Capetown, could spend hours at the place.

This was phenomenal! I LOVED IT!! Thanks to tour guides Len and Cindy, who were extremely friendly and helpful, with knowledge coming out of their ears. It is evident that they enjoy their work thoroughly and spend personal time searching for more tidbits on the infamous Dr Barnard and his crew. They personally met him and have spoken to several nurses who actually assisted in the operation itself. The amount of information and knowledge they posses is mesmerising. I love asking questions and I surely tested their memory which was mind blowing. They are incredible! Definitely take the tour. It’s worth more than you’re paying! Thanks guys!

This 1.5-2 hour tour was one of the best things we did on our vacation. We are not in the medical field, and we did not find the information over our heads. It might not be good for small children, since one of the exhibits shows a dog being operated on. In addition, we found the cost pretty reasonable for a guided tour.

This museum is incredible. Being able to stand in the very room the first heart transplant was performed is life changing. I want to be a surgeon though so my opinion is biased. Regardless though, the museum is thorough in providing all the information about the relevant people and provides all the facts surrounding the transplant and Christ Barnard himself. It also gives credit to everyone involved and not just Christ Barnard, who was the surgeon who performed the transplant. Our guide was very knowledgeable and willing to answer our many questions. Would recommend to anyone going to Cape Town!

This is a truly fascinating exhibit about the world's first heart transplant surgery, the surgeon who performed it, the other key players and the research that enabled it to happen. Only reopened this week and really is a must see museum for all!

I wasn't really excited to go visit the heart museum. Until a friend suggested it and said it was awesome. It didn't disappoint. The tour guide was the best I've been with in a long time. Most interesting and loved to learn all about the hospital. Highly recommend.

Best museum ever, everyone should visit to see the fantastic achievements made. Amazing informative guide Len, seeing the place where surgeries took place and an interview with Christian Barnard made the whole experience very really. Lots more but don't want to give any spoilers.

I found it very informative and interesting, giving me knowledge regarding the players involved in the first successful open heart surgery

  • 5/5 Anthony B. 1 year ago on Google
Fantastic guided tour, very informative, really gives gravity to the feat relative to the technology of the era - great figurines and life size medical scenarios. Some additional context and "light-shedding" of other medical practices, experiments and feats. Len was a great host clearly invested in the experience, you can see his heart is in it! I'd love to dissect it more but you simply have to experience it! There is no coffee available but I am certain it would be lovely!

Absolutely incredible, interesting and comprehensive museum. Extensively display of newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, life size mock-ups of scenes in the theatre rooms as well as a film about Chris Barnard's life. Worthwhile to visit, for all age categories. Various prices for South Africans and foreigners, as well as student and pensioner prices. Book in advance, if possible and allow for approximately 2 hour's minimum to view everything.

The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the events that lead to the 1st human heart transplant. It is done tastefully, and both the donor and recipient are humanized and given so much respect and dignity in how their respective display are depicted.

Fantastic museum of you're into cardiology or just a nerd. Fantastic guide with a lot of enthusiasm. One great thing is that you can touch almost everything. One minus that the fee was a bit high.
